Irish round towers, also called Cloigtheach, bell tower come from the middle age and were originally bell towers. Their use varied over the centuries and circumstances. Mainly from Irish origins, two can also be found in Scotland and one on the Isle of Man. . They were mainly built near cemeteries and monasteries with their door facing the west doorway of the church. . The purpose of the towers remain a bit unclear. One hypothesis suggests that the tower were used to store religious relics. . . . . . . . #ig_ireland #loveireland #irishbuilding #irishtower #medievaltimes #mefievalages #stones #tower #middleagearchitecture #ancientarchitecture #discoverireland #irishhistory #cloigtheach #roundtower #outlander #viking #monastery #glendalough #wicklowmountains #wicklow #eire #irishroundtower #vestife (at Wicklow Mountains) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAA0WDYgXae/?igshid=1vrxqu1jjv4cw

"An Cloigtheach" (The Round Tower) This tower is 100ft high and has 6 floors with wooden landings which have since vanished, the top storey has 4 windows, the other storeys have 1 each. The door is almost 12ft above ground and was reached by ladder that would have been pulled up with the monarchs who prayed there to prevent enemies from joining them. Built sometime between 900 & 1200 #rapunzel #tower #history #discoverdublin (at Dublin, Ireland)

🔴Irish round towers🔴 . ⚫They are early medieval stone towers of a type found mainly in Ireland, with two in Scotland and one on the Isle of Man. ⚫In Irish, the towers are known as Cloigtheach which mean bell towers, though they may have been used for more purposes. ⚫Generally found near a church or monastery, the door of the tower faces the west doorway of the church. ⚫In this way, it has been possible to determine without excavation the approximate site of lost churches, where the tower still exists. ⚫This proximity to places of worship suggest that the towers were used by Ireland’s early Christian monks in some way. ⚫Surviving towers range in height from 18 metres (60 ft) to 40 metres (130 ft), and 12 metres (40 ft) to 18 metres (60 ft) in circumference; that at Kilmacduagh being the highest surviving in Ireland. . .
