🔴The Terrace of the Lions🔴 . ⚫Located in the island of Delos one of the most important mythological, historical, and archaeological sites in Greece. ⚫The lions are faced East towards the Sacred Lake of Delos where it's believed the greek sun god Apollo had been born. ⚫The original row probably contained 12 stone lions that were built around 600 BCE by the people of Naxos in honor of the god Apollo. ⚫The five remaining lion statues are marble replicas, and the actual figures have been moved to the Archaeological Museum of Delos. ⚫The lions, with their mouths open as if roaring or snarling, were meant to guard the sanctuaries and to inspire a feeling of divine fear among the worshippers. ⚫The way in which they were positioned is similar to the way sphinxes were set up along avenues in ancient Egypt. ⚫Delos was included in the UNESCO World's Cultural Heritage list of Cultural Landscapes and Archaeological Remains in 1990. . . 🔴Copán is an archaeological site🔴 . ⚫the Maya civilization in the Copán Department of western Honduras, not far from the border with Guatemala. This ancient Maya city mirrors the beauty of the physical landscape in which it flourished—a fertile, well-watered mountain valley in western Honduras at an elevation of 600 meters (2,400 feet) above mean sea level. It was the capital city of a major Classic period kingdom from the 5th to 9th centuries AD. ⚫The city was in the extreme southeast of the Mesoamerican cultural region, on the frontier with the Isthmo-Colombian cultural region, and was almost surrounded by non-Maya peoples. ⚫Copán was occupied for more than two thousand years, from the Early Preclassic period to the Postclassic. The city developed a distinctive sculptural style within the tradition of the lowland Maya, perhaps to emphasize the Maya ethnicity of the city's rulers ⚫The city has a historical record that spans the greater part of the Classic period and has been reconstructed in detail by archaeologists and epigraphers. Copán was a powerful city ruling a vast kingdom within the southern Maya area.[4] The city suffered a major political disaster in AD 738 when Uaxaclajuun Ub'aah K'awiil, one of the greatest kings in Copán's dynastic history, was captured and executed by his former vassal, the king of Quiriguá. This unexpected defeat resulted in a 17-year hiatus at the city, during which time Copán may have been subject to Quiriguá in a reversal of fortunes. . . 🔴Le Castella🔴 . ⚫Located in Calabria, Southern Italy. ⚫The mighty fortress sits on ancient foundations that date back to the Magna Graecia (400 BC). ⚫Hannibal, one of Rome’s greatest enemies, took refuge here in the latter years of the Second Punic War (208-202 BC). ⚫The fortress never hosted the nobility of the place but served as a shelter for soldiers engaged against the attacks of invaders from the sea. ⚫The Aragonese Fortress, despite the various damages caused by atmospheric agents and violent storms, preserves an ancient village structure: the majestic cylindrical tower, divided into three floors and connected by a stone spiral staircase; the manor, around which rise defence walls. . . 🔴The Lion Capital of Ashoka🔴 . ⚫It is a sculpture of four Asiatic lions standing back to back, on an elaborate base that includes other animals. A graphic representation of it was adopted as the official Emblem of India in 1950. It was originally placed on the top of the Ashoka pillar at the important Buddhist site of Sarnath by the Emperor Ashoka, in about 250 BCE during his rule over the Maurya Empire. ⚫The pillar, sometimes called the Aśoka Column, is still in its original location, but the Lion Capital is now in the Sarnath Museum, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Standing 2.15 metres (7 feet) high including the base, it is more elaborate than the other very similar surviving capitals of the pillars of Ashoka bearing the Edicts of Ashoka that were placed throughout India several of which feature single animals at the top; one other damaged group of four lions survives, at Sanchi. ⚫The capital is carved out of a single block of polished sandstone, and was always a separate piece from the column itself. It features four Asiatic Lions standing back to back. They are mounted on an abacus with a frieze carrying sculptures in high relief of an elephant, a galloping horse, a bull, and a lion, separated by intervening spoked chariot-wheels. The whole sits upon a bell-shaped lotus. ⚫The capital was originally crowned by a 'Wheel of Dharma' (Dharmachakra popularly known in India as the "Ashoka Chakra"), with 24 spokes, of which a few fragments were found on the site. A 13th-century replica of the Sarnath pillar and capital in Wat Umong near Chiang Mai, Thailand built by King Mangrai, preserves its crowning Ashoka Chakra or Dharmachakra. The wheel on the capital, below the lions, is the model for the one in the flag of India. . 🔴Azadi Square🔴 . ⚫Azadi Square (Persian: میدان آزادی‎ Meydāne Āzādi), formerly known as Shahyad Square (Persian: میدان شهیاد Meydāne Ŝahyād), is a mainly green city square in Tehran, Iran. It hosts as its centerpiece the Azadi Tower. The tower and square were commissioned by Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran, to mark the 2,500th year of the foundation of the Imperial State of Iran. ⚫It has an area of about 50,000 m2, plus adjacent areas and has a very large roundabout within its main confines. It is the largest square in Tehran and the second largest in Iran, being smaller than Azerbaijan Square in Tabriz. ⚫The 50 m tower is in the center of the square. The design of the tower and the surrounding area is an archetype of Iranian-Islamic architecture and aesthetic geometry. The fountain is inspired by Iranian gardens, and the slope of the square was carefully and purposefully designed, assisting with efficient irrigation. This status is reflected in the green and bold choice of name, meydāne as in Turkish being loosely cognate with medina, in some Arabic senses meaning garden square, otherwise secluded quarter. . .
