CLEO SMITH

Abducted - 16 October - 3 November 2021

Cleo Smith, an Australian girl aged 4 was abducted on 16 October from a campsite at Gascoyne, Western Australia where her family went camping for the weekend. Smith had gone to bed in the tent at 8pm, woke up at 1:30am to ask for water and then went back to sleep. The family woke up at 6am and discovered both Smith and her sleeping bag missing. Her family initially searched the area and then notified police at 6:23am.

Smith was found alive on 3 November, after police raided the home of Terence Darrell Kelly, aged 37, in the nearby town, Carnarvon.

Kelly was a stranger to the family and was under the influence of methamphetamine when he abducted Smith. He kept Smith locked in a bedroom inside his home. He changed her clothes, played with her and when he became angry with her, he said that he ‘smacked her a little bit’. Smith cried and pleaded to see her parents, which prompted him to turn up his radio so the neighbours wouldn’t be able to hear her. Cleo would sometimes hear her name mentioned on the radio and she would say, ‘They’re saying my name!’ Kelly also cut and coloured her hair.

During the time no one had visited his home and he continued with his normal routine. He continued to go to his Job Provider appointments and visited his relatives.

A car with the same description as Kelly’s was spotted driving from the campsite in the early hours of 16 October. Kelly was known to police, he has been in prison previously for burglary, drug use and other offences. His mobile phone number was traced to the phone tower near the campsite around the same time when Smith was kidnapped. The investigation led investigators to Kelly’s home when she was rescued in a morning raid.

Kelly pled guilty to kidnapping and was convicted of child abduction and sentenced to 13 years and 6 months in prison. He has since lodged an appeal against this sentence.

It is unknown what Kelly would have done to Smith in the long run if the police didn’t rescue Smith when they did.
