#fighting w friends over crazy rich asians who r saying it wasn't an amazing movie #that's literally not the point #it's about seeing someone who looks like you on the silver screen #someone like you who is usually playing some super stereotypical racist role #and nothing else #it's about seeing a romcom with asians in it #that's not disregarded as 'just a chinese movie for chinese ppl' #it's about seeing asians in a mainstream movie where they're not reduced down to being asian #they're just people #it's about the fact that chinese kids that grew up in canada experienced racism to the point where we would hate being chinese #hiding all the parts of us that were #wishing we were white instead of chinese so we wouldn't be seen as ugly/nerdy/submissive/etc #choosing english names for ourselves in an attempt to hide our ancestry #unable to dodge the anchor of our last names that give us away #representation matters so so so fucking much #you're not going to get oscar winners for every movie with or about asians a la parasite or eeaao #it doesn't have to be perfect #it just has to exist #and this friend just keep saying it wasn't a good movie #ok?? it wasn't made for chinese kids who grew up in china #it was made for us
