Both my suit jacket and arm are draped over Katherine’s shoulders as we walk back towards the hotel from her old bar where I found her.
We’ve walked in silence for a few blocks and it’s deafening despite the bustling city around us. We’ve seemed to have only a silent understanding of the situation; neither of us has said a word.
My mind is too muddled to speak. I don’t know what to say because there’s so much to be said but nothing all at once. I don’t want to ask if she’s alright because obviously she isn’t. I don’t need to ask what’s wrong because I know. I know why she was there. I know why she broke down when she saw me.
Despite knowing, I don’t know what to say … and I hate myself for it.
I glance down at her when I hear a sniffle; she’s staring at the ground as she walks holding my jacket securely around herself. I watch her hand poke up from beneath the lapels to wipe a tear from her cheek and I feel my heart break a little more.
I want to tell her it’s ok, that it’ll be ok, that we’ll be ok. I want her to tell me the same. But I know that neither of us can say that right now with certainty.
So we continue to walk … in silence.
****
Once back at the hotel, Katherine and I step inside our suite. I shut the door behind me and start to follow her as she walks into the bedroom; now that my arm isn’t around her, I notice that she’s a little wobbly on her feet thanks to her slightly tipsy state. She didn’t have much to drink, only a couple of glasses of wine at the gala, and based on the tab I paid at the bar before leading her out, I’d surmise no more than two drinks there, but I know she’s barely eaten anything today which is doing her no favors and she’s always been a bit of a lightweight as it is.
When I enter the bedroom steps after Katherine, I see her draping my suit jacket on a chair. She then reaches back, attempting to grab the zipper of her gown, but she can’t quite reach it. When she becomes frustrated, evident by the small huffs of breath she keeps releasing, I step up behind her and gently cover my hand with hers. She goes completely still. After a moment, she glances over her shoulder; her eyes are rimmed red and still misty when she meets my gaze. I give a soft nod, and she slowly lowers her hand as she looks straight ahead again.
As I lower the zipper of her gown, I let my thumb graze her spine, and I swallow thickly. When was the last time I touched my wife like this? The last time that my fingers brushed against her bare skin? I think back … it’s been a year. We were in Ramsford for the Beaumont Bash and we both had a lot to drink that night. I vaguely remember stumbling into our room, my hands tugging at the fabric of her dress and her arms wrapping around my neck as I kicked the door shut. Before that night, it had been months since we’d last been intimate, and before that, even more months. When we woke the next morning, we showered and dressed without a word, and when we arrived back at the palace, she went to the east wing while I headed to my study. It was awkward in a way and treated like it never happened. I think that’s when the deteriorating state of our marriage started to slowly consume my thoughts.
Once her zipper is lowered enough, Katherine takes a step away and turns to face me, holding the front of her gown against her chest so it doesn’t fall. I slip my hands into my pockets to stop myself from reaching for her because I don’t know if that’s something I’m allowed to do anymore. We stare at one another, and my eyes are silently pleading with her. Talk to me. Please. Talk. To. Me. I can swear I see a similar plea in her own eyes. I open my mouth to speak but quickly snap it shut because I still have no idea what to say.
“Thank you,” she whispers.
“Of course,” I nod in reply. After staring at me almost expectantly, she lets out a soft breath and turns. “Katherine, I …”
She stops and looks back at me; I see a flicker of something … of what I think is hope mixed with desperation and worry. “Yeah …?”
I hold my breath and her gaze for a moment before shaking my head. “Nothing …”
Her breath subtly hitches in her throat as she drops my gaze and nods. When she disappears into the bathroom, I hang my head, squeezing my eyes shut in disappointment.
Disappointment with myself, where we are, and my inability to grasp how to fix it.
I begin to loosen my tie, but I freeze as my eyes shift to the bathroom door when I swear I hear a muffled cry from behind it.
Where did it go? The love I once knew? It’s lost in the dark The light can’t shine through Where did we go? I can’t see it now I’m fighting the night To find you somehow…
*******
My fingers are steepled over my lips as I stare out the window of my study. My mind is in the same place as it has been for the past week since returning home: my marriage. Hell, my mind was here before our trip, but now, it’s all I can think about morning, noon, and night.
Katherine and I have yet to speak about what happened in New York. The morning after finding her in the bar, we sat through a silent breakfast followed by a few appearances that were scheduled before heading to the airport for our flight home. On the jet, I almost said something but decided against trying to have that conversation 35,000 feet in the air with no escape if we needed one.
In hindsight … maybe that wouldn’t have been the worst idea.
Since we’ve returned home, things have gone back to exactly how they’ve been. I work through the day and go to the east wing for our nighttime routine with the children. But instead of leaving the moment they go to sleep to go back to my study or the west wing … I’ve lingered. I think she believes I’m just waiting to be sure the children are asleep before slipping out, not realizing I’m there for her. I’m trying to give myself the courage to bring it up, but I find an excuse every damn time. It’s not good timing. It’s late. The kids are there. Whatever my mind can conjure up, it does. My fight or flight has turned to strictly flight; I flee every time. And either she’s having the same thoughts and coming up with the same excuses to not bring it up herself … or she’s completely given up, which after what happened in New York, it’s plausible.
The bottom line is this: I know we’ve reached our limit. I know, one way or another, a very difficult conversation is eventually coming.
At this point, it’s inevitable … and it fucking terrifies me.
I’m so lost in thought that I don’t even register the knock on my study door. It’s not until I feel a shove against my arm and hear my name that I finally snap out of it and glance up to see Drake staring at me questioningly.
“I’m sorry,” I say, shaking my head as I straighten in my chair. “I didn’t hear you come in.”
“No shit,” Drake playfully scoffs. “I knocked a few times … called your name when I came inside, but you were zoned out.”
I release a breath and nod, rubbing my eyes with the pads of my fingers. “Yeah … sorry. It’s been a long week.” I blink a few times to focus my vision and when I do, I see Drake now sitting across from me. His arms are folded across his chest and his brow is arched. “What?”
“Seriously, Li … what’s been going on with you?”
“What do you mean?”
“This isn’t the first time I’ve caught you like this over the last few months. You seem like you have a lot more than just the stress of running a kingdom on your mind.”
I look away, unable to hold his gaze. Neither Katherine nor I have ever mentioned anything to our friends pertaining to the state of our marriage. We’ve put on the same show in front of them that we have in front of everyone else.
“Liam … talk to me.”
I look at my best friend again, trying to rein in the sadness I feel. If I can’t talk to Katherine, maybe talking to someone will help. I clasp my hands together and lean forward against my desk as I let out a heavy sigh.
And I end up breaking down as I tell him everything.
Drake listens without interruption, but he doesn’t hide the surprise in his expression. When I finish, I can see him still trying to process everything I’ve just told him.
“I never would have guessed … any of that,” Drake finally says.
“We’re good at hiding it,” I say. Too good. “It’s just … it’s become our norm. It’s like second nature now … putting on the front.”
“Why haven’t you guys ever said anything?”
I can hear the hint of hurt in his tone. “I don’t … I don’t know,” I reply truthfully. “I can’t speak for her, but for me … I guess it’s … I feel like I’ve already let her down … and the kids. I didn’t want to let my friends down, too.”
“Liam, you’re not letting any of us down.”
“I’m supposed to maintain this image of my life. Acknowledging that my marriage had completely fallen apart to myself was hard enough. Saying it out loud to someone else …” I shake my head.
“So what the hell are you going to do?” Drake asks. “I mean, you’re going to fix it, right?”
“I don’t know,” I scoff with a shrug. “I don’t know if it can be fixed.”
Drake’s brow furrows. “What are you saying?”
“I’m saying that …” I trail off, chewing the inside of my cheek, not wanting to say my next words, but they come anyway. “I’m saying that perhaps this is the end of our story.”
“What the fuck, Li?” Drake barks as he abruptly stands from his chair. The reaction startles me, and I look at him, unable to hide my surprise. “How could you even say that?”
“Do you think that’s what I want?” I snap. “Because it’s not! But I can’t force us to get back to where we once were!”
“That’s bullshit and you know it,” Drake chides, and when I open my mouth to retort, he leans forward, getting right in my face. “It’s bullshit. And. You. Know. It.” He stands upright. “To just accept defeat is not only the easy, coward’s way out, it’s not you!”
“Drake—”
“No, I don’t want to hear it,” Drake interrupts. “What you and Katherine have … it’s the fucking dream, Li. And I’m not talking about the literal fairytale crap,” he says, waving his hands dismissively. “I’m talking about the real shit. I watched you two; I had a front-row fucking seat. I watched your story unfold. I watched you both fight like hell to be together. And here you are now, a decade later, and you’re ready to wave the white flag because you two hit a rough patch that you won’t acknowledge to each other? Fuck. That.”
As I stare up at him, I feel a tear slip down my cheek … because I know he’s right. I clear my throat and snap my gaze toward the window, trying to fight back my emotions.
“I know you both, Li, and neither of you would keep putting yourself through this if you truly wanted to walk away. That’s gotta stand for something.”
My gaze shifts up to his again. “I don’t want to walk away,” I say through a cracked whisper.
“Then you fight.”
Where did it go? The passionate fire? We can’t find the flame And now we’re both tired What do we do When all we have left Is dying for life But on its last breath?
****
That evening, as I’m finishing up my work for the day and finalizing some plans I’ve set into motion, I hear a knock on my study door and call for them to enter. When I look up, Katherine steps inside. “Hi,” I greet her as I rise from my chair.
“Hello,” Katherine responds. She quietly closes the door behind her. “I’m sorry to bother—”
“You’re not bothering me,” I interrupt as I walk around my desk.
Katherine swallows, holding my gaze as she subtly nods. “I, uh … I was just trying to get things in order with my schedule for next week, but it’s … did you have it cleared?”
“I did,” I answer, and my heart is pounding in my chest as I watch the confusion fill her expression while I try to keep mine impassive.
“Why?”
“Because we’re going on a trip.”
Katherine’s brows raise. “We?”
“Yes,” I nod. “We … as in you and me.”
“A trip for what?”
“That’s still to be determined,” I say cryptically.
Katherine furrows her brow. “Is it a work-related thing?”
Even though I expected her to think that, it still hurts when she asks. “No,” I shake my head. “It’s not.”
“I’m confused …”
“About?”
“We … we haven’t gone on a trip that wasn’t duty-related in a long time,” Katherine says. “At least … not together.”
“I think it’s safe to say we’re a bit overdue,” I quip.
“But what about—”
“Eleanor and Lucas are going to have some quality time with their Uncle Drake,” I interrupt again, knowing what she’s wondering. “I spoke with him and made all of the arrangements already.”
Katherine lets out a sigh as she continues to stare at me. “I …” She trails off, shaking her head. “I don’t understand …”
My impassive wall drops and I sigh as I let the emotion I’ve been trying to conceal fill my features. “Katherine …” I speak just above a whisper. “You and I … we’re lost.”
I see her eyes slightly widen as she lets out a breath before she drops my gaze, but not before I see the pain fill her expression. It’s as if hearing me finally acknowledge the truth we’ve both known but have remained silent about out loud has gravely wounded her.
“We’re lost and we both know it. And we can’t keep running from it. We need to face it. We need to … to talk about it and figure out if we’re going to find ourselves again — find us again — or …” I trail off, struggling to say the next words out loud. “Or if we’re going to walk away from this … from each other … because we can’t keep living this way.”
When Katherine looks back up at me, tears trickle down her cheeks. She parts her lips to speak but stops as she lifts a hand and rests it against her throat to where I assume the lump is that’s stolen her voice. More tears fall and more confusion crosses her expression as she continues to hold my gaze.
“I cleared both of our schedules for the next two weeks,” I continue to explain, “and made arrangements for this trip … just for us.”
Katherine’s breath hitches. “Where … where are we going?”
“To the private island …”
I hear the soft breath of acknowledgment Katherine releases.
We can’t run there; we can’t hide or avoid each other. And she knows it. We’ll be left with no other choice but to face this … to face one another.
We stare at each other, and I’m certain the worry and fear of the unknown of what this trip will bring that I’m feeling is the same thing she’s feeling.
We both know we’re going into this completely broken. And we both know that we’re either going to come out pieced back together and on the mend to being whole again … or we’re going to come out irreparably shattered.
I can’t control you Or what your heart will decide But I’ll never stop Trying to fall back in love with what’s already mine…

Never Been Kissed
Book: Open Heart, Book 2 Pairing: Dr. Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Dr. Sawyer Brooks) Rating: General Category: Fluff Word count: 1.8K Summary: Ethan helps Sawyer with one of her New Year’s resolutions. A/N: I woke up with this idea yesterday and hammered it out last night so I could post it in time for NYE. Please forgive any errors. Happy New Year!🎉🪩🍾
Events/Prompts: • Participating in CFWC Holidays 2023 • Participating in Choices Flashfics Week #66 Prompts 🫤3: “How much worse could it get?” • Participating in Choices Holidays Winter 2023
Tumblr media
Sawyer had never kissed anyone on New Year's Eve.
Every year, for as long as she could remember, she rang in the new year with her family. The tradition was due in part to the fact that it was also her father's birthday. Twelve years away at school, but she always returned home for the holidays, never missing the annual event. Even last year, her first in Boston, she was able to make it home. A trip made possible by the plane ticket Ethan had given her for Christmas, a generous thank-you gift for helping him with Naveen.
In recent years their family party grew to include significant others and their babies. Everyone had a special someone to kiss at midnight. Everyone but Sawyer.
When she broke the news to her parents that she was staying in Boston for New Years, there was disappointment on both ends of the line. A couple weeks had passed since she returned to work, and the medical leave she took to recuperate from the attack had already eaten up more time than she could afford. She couldn’t spare any more time away. Her parents were understanding, and Sawyer found a silver lining in that she finally had a special someone to kiss at midnight this year.
At least that was the case until she looked at her schedule a week later. Zaid accommodated her request for extra shifts, allowing her to make up clinic hours. But given that she worked a double on Christmas, she didn’t expect another on New Year’s Eve. She should have known better. It was one of the busiest nights of the year in the emergency department.

After a quick coffee break at Derry’s, Ethan helped Sawyer put her coat back on. He took the cream colored beanie that she pulled from her pocket and fitted it over her head. “Nice bunny tail,” he said, gently swatting the giant cotton ball sewn to the top of her knit hat.
“Watch it, Mister, or you won’t be getting any of this tail for a while,” she turned and shook her rear end at him.
Just before they headed back inside the hospital, Sawyer squeezed his hand. “Sure you don’t want to volunteer and stay for another shift?” she asked, looking up at him with a puppy dog pout.
The first time Sawyer returned to work after the attack, with her landlord in tow, it had been a complete disaster. Though things had gone better this time around, Ethan kept an eye out for any signs of distress. She had her ups and downs, and he couldn't help but worry about her. "Is everything all right?"
“Yeah, it’s fine. You don’t need to worry. I promise,” she tried to assure him, sensing his concern. “I’m just going to miss you tonight, that’s all.”
Ethan could still feel something was off, but dropped it.

It took him twice as long to get home with New Year’s revelers heading to their festivities around town. After a light dinner, a satisfying workout, and a long, hot shower, Ethan settled on his couch. The apartment suddenly felt too quiet, too empty. He missed his girlfriend. Since Sawyer began picking up double-shifts, they had not had a lot of time alone. Sure he got to see her at work. But it wasn’t the same as curling up together on the couch and talking about their day, or kissing whenever they felt like it, or waking up in each other’s arms.
Hoping it would provide some distraction, he turned on the television and watched the local news. When the weather segment began, Ethan grew bored. He reached for a book on the coffee table, finding Sawyer’s notebook underneath. He recognized it from their DT meetings, where she took meticulous notes and sometimes doodled during their brainstorming sessions. She must have forgotten it the last time she stayed over.
The way her mind worked fascinated him. She could be discussing the differences between apples and oranges when… Click! An idea would pop into her head to check their patient for uneven skin texture, giving her the lead needed to reach a successful diagnosis.
Curious to know her thoughts about their current, undiagnosed patient, Ethan picked up the notebook and flipped through the pages. They were filled with detailed notes from each of their team meetings. Random side notes littered the margins. Tacos or burritos? He chuckled, wondering if the question was part of a diagnostic brainstorm, or if she was just hungry at the time. Turning the page to a more recent entry, he found Sawyer’s notes from a meeting he conducted last week. Ethan had attempted to inspire the team by conducting a goal-setting exercise. He asked everyone to jot down a few professional and personal goals for the new year.
Tumblr media
Several emotions washed over Ethan as he read her goals. She was cute as hell, but his heart broke a little knowing how much weight she still carried on her shoulders.
On the TV, the New Year’s Eve countdown now aired. A correspondent stood in front of a large crowd of people gathered in Times Square. “…And according to folklore, a kiss at midnight brings luck and strength to that relationship for the rest of the year. So, who will you be kissing when the clock strikes twelve?” Ethan looked down at her list again. Is that why she wanted me to stay tonight? Was that the reason she seemed so… disappointed?
A timer in the corner of the TV screen counted down the time to the famous ball drop. Forty minutes until midnight.
Ethan never paid any mind to superstitions. Thinking back to the events of the past two years, he thought to himself, “How much worse could it get?” He shuddered at the thought, bolting to his closet where he threw on a pair of jeans and a sweater, then slipped into his running shoes. He was not going to take any chances, and most importantly, he was intent on giving Sawyer whatever she desired. If she wanted a kiss at midnight, he would make it happen. Keys and jacket in hand, the door to his apartment slammed shut behind him.
Ethan stepped into the atrium and checked the clock behind the reception desk. Fifteen minutes until midnight.
He pushed through the doors of the emergency department a couple minutes later. It was eerily quiet. The calm before the storm. In about an hour, the waiting room would be packed with reckless and unfortunate party-goers. He didn’t see Sawyer anywhere, but wanting to confirm, Ethan inquired at the triage desk.
“Happy New Year, Dr. Ramsey,” the triage coordinator greeted.
“Happy New Year, Anabel. Have you seen Dr. Brooks?”
“About an hour ago? She mentioned trying to catch a quick nap before the midnight rush.”
“Thank you.”
Ethan made his way to the on-call room nearest the emergency room. When he opened the door, the beds were full of sleeping doctors, but Sawyer was not among them. After a quick peek in the cafeteria, he headed up to the Internal Medicine floor. The hallways were dim and quiet at this time of night. He checked all the obvious places. Staff lounge, empty. Resident locker room, empty. The on-call room was also empty, save for a pager that someone had left behind. Duh!
“Could you page Dr. Brooks, please?” he asked the nurse sitting behind the circular desk. Not a moment later, the pager in his hand started to vibrate.
Of course. He wondered if this was the universe mocking him for his skepticism.
Jan, the night supervisor, quietly exited the patient’s room behind him. “Hey kiddo, I thought you went home a few hours ago?” She noticed the pager in his hand. “Did someone page you?”
“Uh, no. Jan, I’m looking for Sawy- for Dr. Brooks? Have you seen her?” he asked.
“No, hon, but I’ve seen several folks making their way up to the helipad for the fireworks. Maybe she’s up there?”
Yes! She loves fireworks. Ethan looked at his wrist. Five minutes until midnight.
After thanking the nurses, he walked with purpose to the elevator bank and punched the up button. Come on, come on! Four minutes to midnight.
When he reached the seventh floor he jogged to the helipad entrance. The automatic glass doors slid open and a frigid gush of wind hit his face. With only the light of the helipad beacons, Ethan frantically scanned the gathered crowd. She’s not here. Dammit!
He checked the time again. Two minutes until midnight.
As he turned to head back inside, he noticed a large chunk of snow falling from above. It fell from a secluded section of the rooftop that few knew how to access. Naveen referred to it as “the bird’s nest.” He shared its location with Ethan, and in turn, Ethan shared it with Sawyer. It was a place they could go when they needed a minute of peace. To his surprise, he saw what appeared to be a snowball floating in midair. Wait… not a snowball. A bunny tail!
When he reached the stairwell, he glanced at his watch again. One minute until midnight.
Climbing the stairs three at a time, he quickly ascended two flights of stairs, bursting onto the ninth floor. Thankfully these hallways were lined mostly with administrative offices and were completely abandoned given the late hour. Sprinting to the end of the long hallway, Ethan pulled on a door marked “Authorized Personnel Only.” He launched himself through the dark doorway and blindly climbed another flight of stairs.
Just as his hand reached the door at the top of the staircase, he heard an explosion on the other side. Midnight.
Sawyer jumped when she heard the steel door crash against the stone exterior of the building. Turning around, she saw Ethan. Steam puffed from his mouth as he tried to catch his breath.
With the sky sparkling behind her, he grabbed the sides of her face, and crashed his lips onto hers. Once the urgency had subsided, he changed the angle and kissed her again. Deep and tender. When he pulled away to give his lungs a chance to expand, Sawyer could see the fireworks reflected in his eyes.
Tucked in his embrace, she smiled up at him. “What are you doing here?”
“Helping you keep your New Year’s resolutions.”
She looked at him confused. “Wait... how did you know about that?” She hadn’t remembered mentioning it to him, or anyone for that matter.
“You left your notebook at my apartment.” He reached into his pocket and handed her the pager. “You also left this in the on-call room.”
“Shit. Please don’t tell my boss.”
“You’ll have to silence me with another kiss,” he smirked.
“Well, if that's what it takes...” she laughed, standing on her tiptoes. She brushed her lips against his and whispered, “Happy New Year, Ethan.”
Before claiming her lips again, he whispered back, “Happy New Year, Rookie.”

Series: School Dayz
The Book: TRR (no royals)
The Pairings: Liam x Riley
Word Count: 1464
Warnings and Ratings: None. This is for anyone who has eyes. A total fluff piece.
Original post: 12/31/23 at 7:15PM EST.
Science class was different for me now that I no longer sat next to Liam, and shared a table with my sister, since Mrs. Barbour decided to make the class sit in alphabetical order, which I think the only reason for the change was to make taking roll easier. I glanced across the room to Liam whose partner was now Rashad.
My adorkable boyfriend who caught me watching him, smiled and held up his hot cocoa cup to toast me from across the room. Liam was the sweetest boyfriend and stopped by the local coffee shop Brew Bros and always got hot chocolate every morning the way that I liked it.
Tumblr media
So I smiled while holding up my cup.
“Oh my God, can you two be any more nerdy?” Taylor asked.
“He’s nice, and you reap the benefits of it too. My boyfriend brings us both hot chocolate, or in your case a coffee drink you like every day without us asking.”
Taylor cocked her head to the side and air toasted Liam, taking a sip from her drink when the door opened.
“Ho , Ho, Ho!!!!! Candy Cane Grams, sponsored by the National Honor Society.”
Tumblr media
“Make it quick, Santa.” There was a hint of sarcasm in Mrs. Barbour’s voice as she went to sit at her desk for a moment.
“And his lovely assistant Max Noel!”
“Wait… a sec… Are you seeing this too or am I having a stroke?”
Taylor doubled over in laughter “It is!!!! It’s Drake Walker-Claus.”
Taylor’s laugh seemed to antagonize Drake for a second, but good thing he had his assistant Maxwell. His brooding mood was offset by Max Noel making the class laugh with his dance versions of Christmas music as he followed around the room behind him.
“Hana Lee one for you.”
“Chris Powell four for you, you go Chris Powell!”
Tumblr media
“Do we have a Riley Brooks here?”
“That’s her Max Noel. She’s Riley Brooks and looks nothing like the girl sitting next to her. Those two can’t possibly be related.”
“Riley Brooks here you go, one for you.”
“Thank you Santa.”
“Um….”
“And nothing at all for Taylor Brooks, not even coal or black licorice, bye.”
Tumblr media
Drake and Max ran out of the room.
Taylor looked at me with curious eyes at the candy cane gram in my hand.
“Who’s that from?”
It wasn’t any of her business. I opened the envelope and read silently to myself.
Liam’s sweet words made me smile, and I didn’t have to answer her, and I looked at him from across the room.
“Oh my god. You guys are too much.”
Taylor looked upset, even though she shrugged it off. Later I found out why at her locker.
“I told you to get me a candy cane gram Nico!!!!”
Tumblr media
“Well you telling me to do it, takes the surprise out of it. Me not doing it, guess what you were surprised weren’t you?”
My sister who was always loud looked at him and said nothing.
Before I knew it the words flew out of my mouth.
“Wow, you’re a really bad boyfriend Nico, my sister deserves better than you.”
I slammed my locker walking away from the two of them. I found out later that day, my sister broke up with him, in front of everyone in true dramatic Taylor fashion. I was proud of her.

Christmas Eve
Everyone had come over and was enjoying mom’s Christmas cookies and snacks. My dad brought in a big box sitting it down on the floor.
“I want to thank everyone for coming over tonight to spend time with our family. Our children picked people they care about to spend this time together with you. Ren and I are happy to have you in our home. We both grew up in the foster care system, and learned early in life, sometimes the people that care about you most, are not your blood relatives. So we try to celebrate that.”
“And when we had the opportunity to open our home up to two adorable identical twin girls, we couldn’t say no.” My mother chimed in.
“It’s the best decision they ever made. I went to sleep one night wishing I had a little sister. The next morning I woke up with two.” Jaiden spoke up.
“And we know what it’s like to be alone on Christmas, or missing someone special on Christmas that you were once close to. So we wanted to do something special. Liam would you mind sharing the Christmas Eve tradition you had that you told me about?”
“Christmas was my Mom’s favorite holiday. Every Christmas Eve that I can remember she’d dress us up in these ugly Christmas sweaters
Tumblr media
and we would go ice skating on Lake Pine. She loved to ice skate. Then she’d make us take these dorky pictures in our Christmas sweaters that matched. I miss her a lot.”
“I miss her too. I’m not adopted, but Liam’s Mom always made me feel like I was her son too. So I really get what you’re saying about family not always being blood related. She was my mom too.”
Liam hugged his brother.
My dad opened the box.
“With a little help from Riley I found some what I would think are hideously awesome ugly Christmas sweaters, and am secretly happy for your love of Star Trek too. I’m sorry Liam, you can’t be the Captain, this is mine. But this one is yours.”
Tumblr media
“Well if I can’t be Captain, being the science officer is the next best and most logical choice.” Liam took his blue sweater graciously.
“That’s what I said! Dad please say you got me a blue sweater too.”
“I did.”
After all the sweaters were handed out, there was still one left in the box.
“Guess you guys bought this before I broke up with Nico. No big deal.”
Once everyone was dressed, they headed out to the vehicles, and Liam stuffed the extra shirt into Leo’s trunk.
“I really don’t know how this is going to go Liam.”
“What do you mean?”
“Ice skating? Do you seriously trust me with knives on my feet?”
“Well good thing you’re not just Riley Brooks today, you’re the science officer for the USS Enterprise. Live long and prosper.”
Tumblr media
Liam expected Riley to be as horrible on ice skates as she had been on roller skates, but Riley amazingly was incredibly balanced.
Tumblr media
“Have you ice skated before?”
“No! I don’t know how I'm good at this! I usually have no natural balance.”
“You’re a natural at skating…”
“Ice skating. Let's clarify that.”
Tumblr media
Taylor was still sitting on the bench watching the couples skate by. “She still hasn’t gotten out on the ice yet. I think she’s feeling lonely and the extra shirt probably made her think of Nico.”
Liam’s phone beeped. “Why don’t you go sit with her for a little bit, and I’ll be back in a few with some hot cocoas for us all.”
“Is cocoa your favorite drink?”
“Yes, and my mom used to always say your heart won’t feel cold if you always have a nice warm cup of cocoa. It always makes me feel better.”
I went to sit with Taylor and Liam continued walking toward the concessions stand.
“You okay?” I asked Taylor.
“I just don’t feel like skating, and look over there.”
Nico was there, with another girl on his arm.
Tumblr media
“To be honest I never liked him Taylor. He called you T, like you were a drink or a shirt or something. He wasn’t even really that nice. Good riddance, I say.”
“I never thanked you for standing up for me that day Riley. It really meant a lot.”
“You’re my sister Taylor. I will always have your back, even when you pull me into a tornado.”
“Not on purpose!” She laughed.
“Oh it never is.” I remarked pulling Taylor closer to me in a hug. After a few seconds she pulled away from me.
“What are you doing here?”
“Helping Liam deliver hot cocoa. This one is yours.
Tumblr media
I don’t like all the extra stuff in mine.”
Drake handed Taylor her cocoa, as he sat down next to her.
“Just hot and cocoa pretty much then right?”
“Exactly. I’m not that difficult to understand.”
“Do you like to ice skate, Drake?”
“Like it? It’s okay, but I can. Would you like to skate Taylor?”
Drake took off his coat wearing the remaining ugly sweater.
“Okay.” Taylor said in a nonchalant voice.
Tumblr media
Taylor’s mood picked up immediately as she skated around with Drake on the ice. She never once glanced in Nico’s direction.
“That was really nice of you to do Liam.”
“He really does like her, you know. Maybe now she can finally see him with Nico out the way.”
“You’re so adorkably sweet Liam.”
“I know Riley, I know.”

Brooklyn Heights, New York
Straightening his back, Liam rubbed his eyes, as the jet lag took its toll. After checking the time on his cell, Liam stood up and took another look at his sleeping son. His heart was full, and he felt a sense of peace that he had not known in a long time. He knew it would take time, but he was determined to earn Riley's trust again, and that he would never give up on his son.
Riley waited for him in the kitchen and offered a warm smile as he entered its rustic décor. “I know it's late, but I'm starving. Do you want something to eat?”
Liam was grateful for the offer. “Yes, thank you. I haven’t eaten anything since lunch. That would be great.”
“Have a seat, and I’ll make us some dinner.” Riley smiled coquettishly, pulling a chair for him from under the table.
Liam sat down at the kitchen table and watched as Riley busied herself with preparing their meal. It was a surreal moment, and he had a hard time believing that this was actually happening, but the aroma of the food and the sight of Riley moving about the kitchen with ease, made it all too real.
As they ate, Liam could sense the tension between them. He knew there was so much left unsaid, but he was hesitant to push Riley too far, too fast. He decided to try a different tactic, one that was more familiar to them both.
“How have you been, Riley?”
Riley was startled by his question, and her eyes darted up to meet his. “I’ve been … okay. Busy with work, and William keeps me on my toes,” she replied.
“Tell me about him,” Liam encouraged.
Riley’s eyes lit up, and a smile tugged at her lips. “Well … he’s amazing, Liam.” Riley’s eyes sparkled with genuine love. “He’s smart, funny, and so full of energy. He loves animals, and his favorite food is chicken nuggets. He’s just …” she trailed off, tears filling her eyes.
“He’s your whole world,” Liam finished for her.
“Yes,” Riley said softly, her voice choked with emotion.
“I am so, sorry I was not there for you, Riley. For both of you.” Liam’s expression was wistful.
“Liam, how could you have known?” she replied, looking down; not able to return his gaze.
Liam reached across the table and gently squeezed her hand.
“Riley... look at me, please.” Slowly lifting her head, she met his gaze. “I will never stop regretting that I was not there for you. That you felt that you could not confide in me.”
She gave him a tearful smile, her lips trembling. “We both know, had I told you, you would have given up the throne.  And the country could not afford that. And Madeleine …” Riley lost her battle with her tears and looked down to her hands. “Madeleine would have taken advantage of the situation, and …"
Liam sighed, his thumb brushing the back of her hand. “Riley, I would have found a way. But you are right. My duty is to my people, first and foremost. Duty is important, especially when its most difficult to carry out.”
“That is what I admire most about you, Liam.”  Riley’s breath hitched, “that is why I agreed to be your mistress when Tariq couldn’t be found.”
“Riley, you were never my mistress, you are the love of my life,” he replied, his voice firm.
“Liam, please.” Riley wiped the fresh tears away.
“No, Riley, please let me finish...
When I was crowned King, I vowed to always put the needs of my people before my own. I went through the motions of an engagement and then the marriage. But the day you left, love, I realized that without you, I could never be the King my people deserved. I was miserable, and I knew that if I lost you forever, I would never be happy again. Riley, you are my home.”
“Liam, I …"
“No, my love. You do not have to say anything. I just need you to know how I feel. I love you, and I will do whatever it takes to prove that to you.” Liam watched as Riley broke down and he at once moved to her side, taking her into his arms.
"You don't have to say anything," he assured her. "I just want you to know that I'm here for you, and I'm not going anywhere. If you feel the same about me.”
"What about Madeleine?" Riley asked, her eyes searching his.
"As of this afternoon, Madeleine was served with dissolution papers. My lawyers have already let me know that, in exchange for clemency, that Madeleine will leave Cordonia. Riley, that marriage and along with it, the Cordonian arrangement, has been absolved.”
Riley was speechless, clearly overwhelmed by his revelations.
Liam lifted his hand to cup her cheek; he could see the exhaustion on her face, and he knew they both needed some rest. "Let's get some sleep, and we can talk more tomorrow."
Riley nodded and stood, and he followed her down the hallway to her bedroom. They walked in silence as Riley's nerves were very aware of Liam’s proximity.  He looked so good, and it had been so long since she had felt his touch. She demurely smiled up at him and started to pull him through the door.
"Riley," Liam began, slowing his walk, pausing beside the guest room.
"But..." Riley protested.
"Please, Riley, let's not rush this. I want to do things right this time. Let us begin to re-write our story.”
Liam kissed her cheek. "Good night, my love. Sleep well."
"You too, Liam," she responded.
As Liam turned to leave, Riley impulsively reached out again to pull him close. Their lips met in a tender kiss, and Liam was lost in the sensation of her soft lips on his. It had been so long, and his body reacted instantly, the fire within him threatening to consume him. He forced himself to pull away, his breath ragged.
"Riley..." he warned, unhooking her arms from his neck.
"I know, Liam, I just had to have one last taste."
Liam laughed, his heart soaring. "One last taste? Who said this will be the last time?"
Riley giggled, her face flushing. "Good night, Liam."
"Good night, Riley."
They stood there for a moment, each taking in the sight of the other. Finally, Liam reluctantly turned and headed into the guest room. Riley closed her door and leaned against it, her heart pounding. She could not believe what had just happened, but she was elated and hopeful for the future.
The Four Seasons Hotel, Manhattan
Stumbling into the penthouse suite, Leo chortled, guiding the blond to his room with his hands firmly locked on her waist. The young woman giggled and pushed the door open, and he followed, closing the door behind them with a kick.
"Now where were we?" Leo suggestively said, pulling the woman close and kissing her soundly.
"Leo, stop," the woman giggled, pushing him away.
"Come on, baby, don't be like that," he purred, pulling her close again.
"Leo, no ... you're drunk," she protested, but he could tell she was enjoying the attention.
"So are you," he countered, his lips scaling down her neck.
“I know,” she snickered. “Do you remember my name?” Leo pulled away and looked at her. She was gorgeous, and he couldn’t help but smile.
"Of course, I do," he lied, "but maybe you can refresh my memory?"
She laughed and shook her head. "It's Ashley."
"Ashley," Leo repeated, tasting the name on his lips. "I like that."
"I bet you say that to all the girls," she teased.
"No, no ... only the beautiful ones," he replied, his words slurring slightly.
Ashley laughed, "hey, stop .... your phone is vibrating!"
Leo grabbed the phone from his pocket and squinted at the screen.
"It's a text from my brother. It says, 'we need to talk.’”
Concerned, Leo called Liam back at once, disentangling Ashley's arms from his neck.
"What is it, Li? Are you alright?" Leo's voice was laced with worry.
"I'm fine, but I have news." Liam's tone was calm, which confused and intrigued Leo.
"What's going on, Liam?" Leo asked, his concern growing.
"Riley and I... well, I just met my son."
After a moment of silence ...
"You...you have a son?" Leo repeated, his eyes widening in shock.
"Yes. William. Riley's son. Our son."
Leo ran his hand through his hair and looked around the room, his mind racing.
"Are you there, Leo?" Liam asked, breaking the silence.
"Yeah, sorry. This is just a lot to take in."
"I know. I'll explain everything later. I will be staying here with Riley, for now. I need you to take care of a few things for me."
"Sure, Liam. Anything," Leo agreed. “But I need all the deets, asap.”
"Thank you. And Leo, keep this quiet. We don't need the press finding out about this."
"Li.... what should I tell Olivia? The council? They are expecting you to attend the Five Kingdoms Festival opening ceremony next weekend."
"That was scheduled months ago. That was then. This is now. Things change."
"You got it, Liam. Talk to you soon."
Leo ended the call and stared at his phone, still trying to wrap his head around his brother's news. He looked up to find Ashley slipping out the door. Sighing, Leo poured scotch into a crystal tumbler and switched on the television.
 Brooklyn Heights, New York City
The sun's rays were streaming through the patio doors of the kitchen as Daniel scooped three teaspoons of sugar into his black coffee. Matteo quickly kissed him goodbye before heading out the door as William climbed up on his toddler chair with his train car.
"So, buddy, what would you like for breakfast?"
"I'm hungery, Dan Dan."
Grinning, Daniel poured apple juice into a sippy cup, "you are? Hmmm. I'm thinking french toast with berries and syrup.”
William's face lit up, and he clapped his hands excitedly. "Yummy!"
"You got it, kid," Daniel chuckled, pulling out a pan and the ingredients.
Liam walked into the kitchen as Daniel's eyes widened in surprise. "Your Majesty, good morning."
"Good morning, Daniel. I think it's time you started calling me Liam. No need for formalities."
"And good morning to you William." Liam smiled affectionately, turning his attention to his son.
William looked up to the tall man, shyly, "Hi".
"Okay, Liam. Can I get you anything to eat or drink?"
"Just a cup of coffee, please."
Daniel poured the King a cup as Liam sat down at the table; already knowing that Liam had come to reunite with Riley yesterday evening.
William was watching Liam closely and offered to share his toy train.
"For me? Thank you." William smiled and pointed at his breakfast.
"Dan Dan made me it."
"Is that so? It looks delicious. Do you mind if I have some too?"
William giggled, "okay."
"Dan, could you please make me a plate as well?"
Daniel nodded, "absolutely. Coming right up."
"Thank you.”
“So, William, I see you like trains?"
"Yes! And puppies.”
"Wow, you really do like a lot of things."
William grinned, taking a sip of his juice.
"You and I have a lot in common. I love trains, too. And... puppies.” Liam smiled.
William grinned, "you're funny, Mr. Liam."
"You think so? I'm glad you think so, William. You know, I've always loved trains, even when I was a little boy. Would you like to hear a story about a train I rode on once?"
William's eyes widened in delight. "I like stories.”
"Okay, here goes," Liam said, taking a bite of his food. "One day, when I was about your age, my father and I were traveling across the country, and we decided to take the train instead of our usual car. It was a very big train, with many cars, and we had to ride in a special car just for us."
"Wow!" William exclaimed; his eyes wide with wonder.
"We rode that train for hours and hours, and we stopped in many different towns and cities. Each one was more beautiful than the last. But then, something strange happened."
"Oh," William asked, his face a mixture of fear and curiosity.
"We got stuck. The train stopped working, and we were stranded. It was a very scary situation. We were all alone, with no one to help us. We had no idea what to do. But then, something amazing happened."
"What? What happened?"
Liam leaned in and whispered conspiratorially, "a magic train came along and rescued us. It was like something out of a fairy tale."
"Wow," William breathed, eyes wide.
"Yes, it was quite incredible. We were all safe, and the train took us the rest of the way. But it was an adventure I will never forget."
"Wow," William breathed in awe.
Leaning against the doorframe, Riley looked at the two, smiling as she took in the scene before her.
"Good morning, everyone," she announced brightly.
"Good morning, Riley," Liam replied, standing up to greet her, kissing her cheek.
William's eyes widened, "Mama, look, Mr. Liam told me a story."
Riley grinned, ruffling her son's hair, taking the seat next to William.
"LiLi, this man …” Riley reached across the table and squeezed Liam’s hand.
“... is your Daddy."
"Daddy? My daddy?" William turned and looked up at his father, eyes wide, filled with wonder.
"Yes, I am," Liam softly replied; overcome with emotion.
Liam stood and knelt, meeting his son's eyes. "I've been away for a while, but I'm here now, and I want to be part of your life, if you'll have me."
William smiled, wrapping his arms around Liam's neck. “My Daddy.”
Liam's heart swelled as he embraced his son.
"And Mama, too?" William asked.
"Of course, and Mama too." Liam looked at Riley lovingly.

Single Mom
Tumblr media
This story is born of this week’s @choicesflashfics prompt #3 (which will appear in bold). It’s not the story I had in mind but was able to explore Riley as a mother, along with her fears and hopes for the lives she has brought into the world.
THANK YOU to all who will read this story; I hope you enjoy it. Please excuse and all typos, missing/extraneous words, and/or grammatical errors. I was fast and loose with editing and revisions, but MS Editor has this rated as 99% error-free.
The song inspiration has absolutely nothing to do with parenthood or jellybeans; rather, it was chosen because of it’s fun, relaxed vibe which I feel captures Riley as a parent and her relationship with her sons.
Song Inspo: Recess, Eli “Paperboy” Reed
Pairing: Riam and family
Word Count: 2500ish
Rating: T for Teen
The royal family stood inside the private terminal at Cordonian International Airport; through the wall of floor-to-ceiling windows one of the airliners in the Crown’s fleet sits on the tarmac, waiting for its most important passenger to board.
The King holds his youngest son, Theodore, in his arms feeling the toddler’s tears dampen his shirt collar. His oldest sons, Francis and Jonathan, cling and pull at his pant legs demanding Dada come home with them.
His wife, his Queen, just stares at him. Her eyes are shiny but remain dry. Her husband, along with Rashad Domvallier and Kiara Theron, is going to Sweden for an international conference on linguistic resources to aid the immigration crisis.
Riley realizes that travel is a large part of being ruler: networking, being seen places other than thrones and golf courses, sitting on international boards and committees.
It doesn’t mean she likes it.
“It’s only three days, and I’ll call often,” Liam reassures his family to no avail.
“We’ll be fine,” Riley says as she pries six-year-old fists from his clothing.
She holds her arms out for Theodore as Fric and Frac wrap their arms around her legs, their own tears beginning to fall.
“Hey!” she says brightly. “We’ll go to McDonald’s on the way home, and NO SCHOOL until Dada returns,” she promises.
The twins immediately stopped crying, speaking excitedly to each other in their secret language.
Liam’s look is stern as he double-takes at Riley’s words.
“Oh, NO! There will be school! The boys need structure and to continue their educational routine.”
Riley frowns at her husband over her baby’s head full of black, curly hair.
“And I told YOU, MY children will NOT be attending a school that changes its name from La Petite Academy to The School for Spoiled Kids after our sons enrolled! I will be getting them transferred to a public, Crown-sponsored school while you’re away.”
“The security issues with that …”
“Are NO different than with that private school you insisted on! In fact, aren’t many of the Safety Resource Officers in the public schools members of the King’s Guard?”
Liam rubbed his palm over his face. “We’ll discuss this when I return.”
He held his arms out to embrace his family once again before boarding the plane. He kissed all of his sons on the tops of their heads before his lips lingered over Riley’s.
“I’ll miss you,” he whispered.
“You’d better!” she retorted, her palm cupping his cheek.
With a sigh, the King grabbed the handle of his rolling suitcase and began the walk to the plane. He looked back once; his family was still there. They were waving and blowing kisses and wiping tears from their eyes.
He did the same.
Day 1
It was 8am when Duchess Joelle Theron tucked her large, brown-paper wrapped package underneath her arm and smiled in greeting to Mara as she entered the royal family’s quarters. And stopped in her tracks.
The Crown Prince and the second-born were fist-fighting; Grunts, yells, and cries of “STOP THAT!” were uttered by both parties as well as their mother. The sounds of hands slapping skin ended once Riley was firmly in between the children.
The baby sat on the floor, eating dry cereal out of a bowl as he watched it all unfold. Occasionally Baby Theodore took a sip of juice from his sippy cup.
“Your Majesty?” Joelle asked hesitantly.
Riley turned, a confused smile on her face at hearing her moniker; she had made sure to clear her calendar while Liam was away.
“Joelle! What a surprise.”
The Duchess’ eyes took in the situation: Six-year-old boys in dinosaur-emblazoned pajamas with mussed hair, scratched cheeks, and angry splotches along their forearms; they glowered at each other with mistrustful eyes as their chests heaved. The Queen’s natural hair was an unkempt afro and she wore a too-big chenille robe with frayed sleeves, deep purple in color. A television blared the theme song to a children’s show. The kitchen counters were filled with dirty dishes and cut fruit.
“Is everything okay here?” Joelle asked in genuine concern. There was nothing noble or royal about any of this.
“Oh yeah. Just that Mr. Frac here woke up choosing violence,” Riley clarified as she glared at her oldest. “What brings you to the Palace?”
“I painted a portrait of the heirs. It’s not a traditional painting as I’m dabbling with abstracts now. I’m headed to Krona for lunch with Adelaide, and thought I’d drop it off.”
“Let’s see it!” Riley exclaimed as she led the twins to separate corners, sitting them in chairs facing a wall; their backs were to each other and the room itself.
“Mommy?” Frac’s querulous voice called out softly.
Fric heaved a laborious sigh and placed his face in his palms.
Riley whirled. “It’s QUIET time, young man! Unless you want a spank-spank, which you may get anyway, keep those lips zipped!”
She shook her head. “Puttin’ hands on folks first thing in the morning,” she muttered as she watched Joelle unwrap the painting.
The Duchess Theron arched her eyebrow slightly, giving the Queen a nervous glance. “Is Liam aware of your parenting style, Riley?”
Riley’s face hardened imperceptibly; when she spoke, her tone was tight. “My husband and I are in agreement as to how to raise our children, Duchess.”
"No judgment, it’s just not an approach seen before in Court,” Joelle murmured with a nod of acknowledgement and an apologetic smile before proudly displaying her portrait.
Riley was rendered speechless. And not in a good way.
Against a background of thick, layered cream-colored paint were three-eyed penguin heads with bright orange beaks interspersed with what were either Fred Flintstone’s big toes or inflamed nipples. Top hats and brown leaves completed the portrait.
Abstract, my ass. THIS is indescribable.
“Can you see them in the painting? Is it obvious what I was going for?” Joelle asked eagerly.
The Queen quickly morphed her expression into one of pleasant surprise.
“It looks just like them!”
Day 2
The Rys boys were seated at the dining room table, coloring and drawing. It was the art portion of their homeschooling day, which was a one-off project Riley pulled out of her ass while waiting to hear back from the Prime Minister of Education.
She agreed with Liam that their sons’ education shouldn’t suffer, and that structure and routine were important.  She enlisted Annabelle Parsons, and the women came up with a lesson plan:  Science, which was focused on the solar system with particular interest on the sun. Math, where the boys reinforced their counting skills; Fric and Frac could count to 100. Their younger brother made it to 20 before getting confused. After playtime and lunch, they would have their weekly self-defense class with Mara.
Riley and Annabelle were seated in the living room, enjoying a quiet conversation.
“I’m worried about Frac,” the mother confessed. “He’s taking these separations from Liam harder than the others. I don’t want to punish him for having emotions, but he can’t run around beating up his brothers and calling his mother a heathen!”
Annabelle Parsons carefully sipped her sparkling cider as she considered her friend’s plight. Normally, Annabelle tended to imbibe harder drinks but whenever she visited the Queen, she partook of alcohol-free beverages out of respect for the children.
“Francis loves his father deeply, there’s no doubt about that. Perhaps you and Liam could make a game of it? Maybe a week-long countdown until the day of the trip? And you could have another countdown until his return? Like Christmas, but instead of Santa, it’s Daddy.”
Riley drank sparkling water and lemon. “That’s an excellent suggestion, but how to get my child … all of my children …  to express themselves in healthier ways?”
The Queen adjusted her wig before letting out a heavy breath.
“I want them to be well-adjusted and social, not cooped up in palaces and estates with only adults for socialization. Not saying that being exposed to different levels of experience and maturity isn’t good for them, but they also need time with children their own age, doing regular kid things. They need playmates. They need friends! That’s why I want them in a public school. They can’t rule if they can’t relate!”
“There’s that Beaumont child,” Annabelle reminded her.
Riley looked at her friend in shock. “OH NO! HELLLLL NO! That child is half Walker, half Beaumont and ALL creepy!”
Annabelle snickered. “Well, he is a member of the next generation of Court. Perhaps you can start now sowing goodwill.”
Riley rolled her eyes before laying her head back against the cushion. “I’m going to speak with Liam about a therapist for the twins. Everything about their lifestyle is so … unorthodox, or maybe it’s me that’s not used to it. But thinking counseling can help us help them navigate.”
“I think that’s a brilliant idea,” Miss Parsons encouraged.
“Mommy, I finish!” Fric half-hollered.
A smile came easily to his mother’s lips. “Well, let me come see what masterpiece you’ve created!”
She rose, making her way to the kitchen with Annabelle Parsons close behind. Theodore glanced up and returned to his paper, drawing circles in red crayon. Frac raised his head from his drawing, his eyes meeting his mother’s.
“When is Dada coming home?” he asked sadly. “I want my Dada.”
Riley’s eyes locked with Annabelle’s before returning her gaze to her oldest son. “In two days!” she replied brightly. “And you know what? We can make a game out of it. Want to?”
Day 3
Riley was boiling hotdogs and heating canned barbecue beans for the boys’ lunch. Outside, rain fell steadily; she and the Princes had made it back inside just in time.
After breakfast, Riley had taken the boys to the hedge maze so they could run off excess energy and touch some grass. Until the dark clouds had rolled in and completely discombobulated her sons. All three children had a … thing about getting wet outside of a bathtub.
Her preschoolers were in her and Liam’s bedroom (where they had been since Liam’s departure), playing with blocks. Her toddler was hoisted up on her left hip, watching food cook. Both looked up hopefully when they heard the front door open.
It was Drake.
Both went back to watching hotdogs boil.
“THAT’S the greeting I get?” Drake demanded as he crossed the living room and settled at the kitchen island.
Theodore hugged his mother more tightly. “Hi,” he greeted shyly.
“He’s my moody child,” Riley explained as she used a fork to turn the pinkish meat.
“NO HOLES!” the toddler shrieked in her ear.
Drake looked around the otherwise empty room. “Liam not back yet?”
Riley shook her head. “Tomorrow.”
“Where’d he go again?”
“Dada make rain with skinny witches,” Theodore replied.
“Not what he’s doing, where he is,” Riley corrected. She looked over at her company. “Sweden. Conference on immigration and linguistics resources. We’ll hear all about it at the special Council meeting.”
Drake gave his friend a long, hard look. “You really told your KID that?”
Riley pointedly avoided Drake’s accusatory gaze. “I never said that.” A pause. “Around the boys.”
She set Theodore on the floor. “Go tell your brothers lunch soon, okay?”
Her son nodded his head vigorously as he ran down the hallway.
The Queen turned the burners off on the stove, and began draining boiling water down the drain, careful to keep the hotdogs from spilling out.
“I know you think I’m unconventional, but I’m a good mom. Well, as good as I can be given I was only supposed to be the cool aunt … the auntie mommy as they say in America.”
Drake looked at her thoughtfully; a pensive look shadowed her features.
“Hey, Brooks,” he said softly. “I see all mommy. No auntie.”
Surprised relief lit up her face. “Really?”
“Really. Parenting is always a hit or miss, and I guess it has to be. I mean, there isn’t enough training and skills and experience to raise human beings, right? All you can do is better than what you were taught and use the lessons you’ve learned. At the end of the day, good examples and bad examples can achieve the desired results. Although telling children their fathers are a fictional TV character and a Korean actor, neither who has no idea any of you exist may be pushing boundaries.  But, I’m just the cool uncle talking.”
Riley smiled gratefully. “Thanks, Drake. That means a lot. And for the record, I don’t tell the children that anyone other than Liam is their father. No one has ever heard me tell them that. Liam … that’s a different story. And I did NOT tell the boys that Liam was making it rain with skinny bitches.”
“BB said it was ‘witches’, and you admitted to saying that.”
“SEMANTICS!”
They both turned at the sound of running footsteps.
“Hot dogs, hot dogs!” Fric chanted.
Frac held his stomach as if in pain. “I’m sooooooo hungry!”
As if all of them hadn’t had plates of apple slices and cheese crackers not an hour ago.
Theodore scrambled into his chair at the dining table. “BEANS!”
“Uncle Drake, did you bring us something?” Frac asked after determining his mother was fixing lunch plates.
Drake’s hand ruffled his godson’s hair. “You gotta share, big guy.”
Frac nodded in agreement. “What is it?”
Drake fished in his jean pocket, pulling out a sizable bag of jellybeans. “Here ya go.”
“Eat lunch with us,” Fric demanded as his mother slid a plate of plain, sliced hotdogs and a spoonful of beans in front of him.
Drake’s eyes met Riley’s; she nodded and smiled.
“Okay, deal!”
“And after lunch, you can play with us!” Fric chimed in.
Drake’s eyes narrowed suspiciously. Brooks’ children tended to not play fairly. He was still healing from the trauma of their last game of hide-and-seek in the hedge maze.
“Play what?”
Riely feigned hurt. “I can’t play?” she whined.
“YES! You know you always play with us, Mommy,” Fric replied as he warily inspected a circular piece of meat.
Homecoming
Riley treaded lightly down the hallway, careful not to wake her children. It was just past 7am, and she both wanted and needed the quiet time to at least get the night’s dinner prepared and in ovens and slow cookers.
Glazed lamb, Chicken Tagine, potatoes au gratin, curried rice, and a vegetable medley. Desserts would be baklava and banana cream pie.
Her husband was coming home today!
She set a bowl of jellybeans and her phone on the kitchen island before rummaging through the refrigerator; the chicken had been marinating overnight, and the lamb had thawed. She placed them both on the kitchen counter, then placed a pod of green tea in the beverage maker.
The machine hissed as it heated water to brew her morning drink. When she heard the door to the quarters open, she didn’t bother looking around. Given the hour, it was Mara.
“Ahem.”
Riley whirled at hearing the familiar baritone.
“LOOOVE!!!” she quietly yelled as she ran to Liam’s waiting arms.
The couple kissed passionately: tongues probing, hands feeling and groping, noses touching. When they finally released the other, both were breathless.
“You’re back early! I was expecting you at dinnertime.”
Liam smiled tenderly as his eyes gazed into hers. “I couldn’t stay away another second.”
He heard the quiet and asked an obvious question. “The children are sleeping?”
Riley nodded. “In our bed.”
“I trust all went well?” he asked as he placed his luggage and bags filled with presents for his family in one of the time-out corners.
His wife was placing a pod of his favorite coffee in the brewer. She nodded.
“You basically know everything. Joelle came over; we were unprepared.”
Liam chuckled. “Where is this portrait she gifted us?
Riley looked over her shoulder and rolled her eyes. “THAT is a drunk date night reveal. It’s the only way it’ll make sense.” She turned back around to grab Liam’s mug.
The King looked over the jellybeans in the bowl and popped one in his mouth.
“And I told you about the boys’ counting prowess, and excitement over the solar system.”
“Krona has a new planetarium opening soon; we should make it a weekend trip for all of us.”
Liam grabbed a handful of the jellybeans this time around; they were delicious, and he was hungry. He hadn’t eaten since dinner the night before.
Riley was blending sugar and sweet Italian cream in their beverages.
“Did you and the boys have fun?” he inquired.
“We need to have a husband/wife, mother/father talk. I’m worried about Frac’s separation anxiety.”
Liam nodded somberly. “I agree. I’ve been thinking about your suggestions; we can discuss now, or this weekend.”
“This weekend will be fine. I won’t have you to myself until then anyway. But we went to the hedge maze, had reading time, and today is facial masks and dance party day!”
“Oh, I came home just in time,” he joked.
“And we played bean butt.”
Liam’s chewing slowed. “What exactly is that?”
Riley slid his mug across the granite countertop; her eyes widened when she saw the candies in her husband’s palm. With her giddiness over Liam’s early return, she forgot to empty the dish's contents in the trash.
She slapped the side of his hand, causing him to spill them.
“DON’T EAT THAT!”
“What’d you do that for?” he demanded angrily, wincing at the stinging on his skin.
“Bean butt? Long story short, I put a whole bag of jellybeans up my ass. One at a time. And then pulled them out."
Liam frowned and looked askance at the bowl. His thoughts tumbled in his brain.
Riley was his wife. His loyal wife.
She was clean. THAT was important.
He had put his tongue in her forbidden places before.
He’d already eaten some!
The King would take the risk. He scooped more.
Riley had her back to him, pulling out breakfast meats and eggs for breakfast.
“Drake played bean butt with us too.”
Liam looked aghast at his palm, and poured his jellybeans back into the bowl as if they were live fire. He then threw the entire bowl in the garbage can.
Welcome home.

Side by Side: Interlude
This piece is for @choicesflashfics Week #70 prompts! This section takes place shortly after Liam and Rayne's conversation in Chapter 7, which is a few days after his wedding to Madeleine... you guys know the drama drill haha.
Book: The Royal Romance Pairing: Liam Rys and Rayne (romantic) Themes: hurt/comfort, friendship, family, Maxwell being an excellent friend Words: 1827 (apologies, but I promise it's an easy read) Prompts used: Prompt 1 — “I wish you could see yourself the way I see you.” Prompt 3 — “How are you going to explain this/that?” Side by Side Masterlist (updated) here
I've included my Side by Side taglist for the interested folks, but you don't need to be up to date on that to follow the scenes. Side note I had wayyyy too much fun on Canva making this image.
Tumblr media
Rayne didn't return to the palace with Liam. He stayed the night after their discussion, they reunited in more ways than one, and the next morning they began to discuss logistics.
“What are they expecting when you arrive home?” Rayne asked, elbows on the dining table either side of an empty breakfast plate.
“Except for Bastien, the palace and the press don't know that I'm here. They still believe I'm at the estate with Madeleine. They'll expect us to arrive together.”
“You can stay here until then, if you want.” said Maxwell, who had tactfully said nothing last night of why Liam was here but was keen to assist now. “Bertrand would be honoured.”
Rayne sipped her orange juice - no coffee for a while - and allowed Liam to respond to a question of which she knew the answer.
“Thank you, Maxwell, but they expect us this afternoon. I will reconvene with Madeleine and travel with her back to the palace.”
“So how are you going to explain this?” Maxwell cut to the elephant in the room. Rayne looked to Liam again. They had discussed how to play this but ultimately it was up to him.
“To be honest, I'm not sure yet. But I will discuss it with Madeleine, since she is open to compromise, and make a statement when the time is right.”
Maxwell nodded, and turned his attention to Rayne. “And you, blossom? are you returning as well?” He sounded a little forlorn at the prospect.
“I could,” Rayne said, glancing at Liam, “but as I discussed with Liam last night it might be better to lay low for a while.”
“It would give me the chance to lay the groundwork for your return.” Liam reached for one of her hands, taking it in both of his. The way he gently squeezed was enough to communicate how much he wanted her to be there with him. Rayne held his gaze, then looked to Maxwell.
“I was hoping I could stay here until then.”
Maxwell looked surprised, then smiled warmly. “Absolutely you can! We will have so much fun… we can go riding and to the sauna and for runs together and…” he paused at Rayne’s bemused smile, and continued a little sheepishly. “I mean we can relax and watch movies and go for reasonable length walks…”
“I would love all those things, Max.” Rayne grinned. “But maybe we can start with the movies and walks.”
“I'll contact your doctor,” Liam noted, “see if she could be persuaded to make a house call. Everything discreet, of course.” Rayne had seen this doctor a few times whilst in Cordonia at Liam's recommendation and approved of her.
“So this is all a secret for now then?” Maxwell queried.
“Yes,” Liam answered, squeezing Rayne's hand again and releasing her. “For now at least, this news doesn't leave this household.”
— —
The sky was overcast as Rayne and Maxwell left the Beaumont estate several weeks after the decision to stay. Nerves built inside her as they climbed into the back of the SUV sent to collect them and approached the open gates of the estate. The car was silent for a few minutes, and Rayne focused on the outlines of the trees and vines bordering the gravel road.
“I left a charger cable in my room.” Maxwell sighed. She turned to him.
“At home?”
“No, at the palace. I'm looking forward to getting it back.”
Rayne smiled, breaking some of the tension in her face. “Don't you have other chargers?”
He shrugged. “Technically yes, but this one's my favourite.” The words were followed by a wide grin that made her laugh.
“Glad you can finally get it back then,” she remarked fondly, and turned back to the window. It was starting to rain now, gently, but it was predicted to get heavier as they approached the city.
“I hope I have the same room…” Maxwell commented. As he had previously assured her they would have the same rooms, Rayne didn't respond, but thinking of the rooms inevitably led back to thoughts of Liam.
Her hand subconsciously moved to her belly, which now was aligned with her breasts. The last time the doctor had visited had been the most surprising, but made the most sense. At ten weeks, her baby should not be showing so much - but twins did.
Twins were not uncommon in Rayne's family, she'd had a twin sibling, but it didn't make the prospect any less terrifying. Having one life growing inside her for the first time was enough, but she was still reckoning with the idea of two.
A loose shirt and open coat would do little to hide the reality from prying eyes, so she was not looking forward to her hospital visit…
“Liam will be there.” Maxwell's voice cut through Rayne's reflections. She turned to him. “He will make sure everything goes smoothly. You'll be okay, blossom. No need to be stressed.” His eyes flitted to where her hand trembled against her belly as if in recognition of her nerves. She let her hand fall, and he reached for it.
“I know,” Rayne muttered. And she did, but it didn't take away all her anxiety.
Maxwell squeezed her hand to bring her focus back to him. “There is no benefit in worrying about would could happen or what people might think. You have a lot of good people to support you, my wonderful self included, and we will all make sure that you are safe and comfortable.”
Rayne felt tears prick her eyes, smiling at the unusual earnestness from her jovial friend. After a moment holding his gaze, she nodded.
“I know,” she said again, “thank you, Maxwell.”
“Any time.” He smiled, releasing her hand, and they fell into an easier quiet. Rain pattered on the roof and windows of the car, they exited the gravel drive onto a sealed road, and she reflected on the words he had used. Maxwell was more intelligent than he was given credit for, but he spoke in simpler sentiments.
“Liam told you to say that, didn't he?”
He frowned, the shrugged. “He suggested I be more openly supportive - me being so much a master of subtlety and all - but I didn't need to know how to comfort one of my best friends, particularly given I've technically spent more time with you over the years than his royalness.”
“True, very true,” Rayne conceded, hiding a smirk and turning back to the road. “Especially during the hard times. And more recently whilst I've been… well…”
“Finally appreciating the excellence of my company?” Maxwell finished for her.
“Sure.” Rayne turned back to his wide smile. “And hugs. I appreciate your hugs.”
Several instances passed through her mind of Maxwell holding her. As she wept; as she sat nauseous beside the toilet; as she fell into him barely able to breathe; as she expressed just how much her heart ached, how much she wished Liam were with her, and things had turned out differently…
Eventually Rayne fell into a restless doze. She imagined reuniting with Liam and it brought her comfort. He had visited, once, a few weeks before. She had tried to be composed through the hormonal shifts but he had found her mostly short tempered. She hadn't properly said goodbye. There were some things she regretted saying, and she imagined having to resolve some tension before even entering the palace. Her new home.
— —
“Rayne.” A voice broke through her reverie, and a nudge of her shoulder. “Rayne, are you awake?”
“Nng,” she responded, less coherent than intended. She tried again. “Yes.”
“Good.” It was Maxwell's voice. “We're almost there.”
Rayne registered the thick rain and slow movement of the car over more gravel and lifted her head to see out, wiping drool from her chin and sleep from her eyes. Her back and neck ached from the awkward angle and she resolved once again never to sleep in a car.
“You can finally get your phone charger cable,” she remarked, watching the palace as they approached. Maxwell laughed.
“My whole reason for accompanying you is complete!” The lightness in his voice made her smile, despite the growing nerves.
“I hope you can stay for a while though,” she said, “I'll miss your company.”
Maxwell reached for her hand again. “Don't worry blossom, I'll make sure you're all set up before leaving. And you know how to reach me after that.” He looked up past Rayne, then, and grinned. “Welcome home.”
Rayne turned to see the palace slide out of view past some tall hedges. Her palms were sweaty and her chest tight, then the hedges opened out to reveal a familiar figure waiting under cover by the entrance, and her heart leapt.
— —
Liam waited by the door with Drake and two of the palace staff, rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet with an umbrella in hand as they watched the SUV approach. It moved so slowly, but the time was finally nearing when he would see her again, and see her every day from now on.
“Bit excited there, Li?” Drake teased from just behind him. It only made Liam smile wider. His heart thumped in his chest and he stood so close to the edge of the portico that some of the rain began to reach him.
“Absolutely,” Liam responded, unphased. The car was so close he thought he could make out Rayne’s face through the tinted glass. It pulled up alongside the palace, and he leapt into action with his now open umbrella. She always sat on the right side, so he opened that door just as she reached for the handle, and there she was.
“Liam,” she breathed, wide eyed as he met her gaze. How was she even more beautiful than he remembered?
“Welcome home, love,” he managed after a few moments, holding the umbrella above them both with his other hand out to help her up. As she stood, he breathed in her scent, and all the tension in his body and mind relaxed. “I missed you.”
Rayne looked up at him as he closed the car door behind her. She opened her mouth to speak, closed it again, and wrapped her arms around him for the first time in too long. He held her in the rain on the gravel driveway, holding the umbrella above them in one hand, heedless of the staff and friends moving around them.
“I missed you too,” Rayne mumbled into his chest, and held him tighter. Liam kept his touch gentle, not wanting to strain her, and after a while he pulled back and moved a loose curl away from her face. She sniffed, wiping her face with a coat sleeve, and started to apologise for her appearance. Liam shook his head to halt her.
“I wish you could see yourself the way I see you,” he said, smiling softly, “there is nothing and no one else so perfect in this world.”

Holiday Shopping
Book: Perfect Match
Pairing: Hayden Young x F!MC (Arielle Park)
Word Count: ~690
Rating: General
Tagging: @choicesholidays: "I'm so thankful for you." @choicesflashfics Holiday Prompts: "Look, there's mistletoe. We have to kiss, it's the law." @choicesficwriterscreations: Holiday Event
Summary: Arielle & Hayden go shopping for Christmas décor as they get ready to celebrate their first holiday together.
Tumblr media
Arielle stood in the aisle, squinting at the snowglobe she was holding in her hands, turning it around and inspecting it as if it were an otherworldly object.
"Hmm, not sure about this one. Hey, Hayden, what do you think?"
She turned to the man beside her and held up the snowglobe to offer him a view. Hayden put down the nutcracker he was looking at, and took the snowglobe from Arielle, chuckling as he did so.
"I'm pretty sure this is the seventh snowglobe you've shown me since we came in here. Have you even looked at anything else?"
Arielle crossed her arms defensively. "Of course I have!"
"Like…?"
"Like…" she paused, finding herself at a loss.
"A lot of things, okay? You just didn't see. Now, please tell me if you think this snowglobe is cute enough to be in our living room or not."
Hayden shook his head in amusement, then gently plucked it from her hands, and placed it into their shopping cart.
"I think it's perfect. Now, come on, let's move on from the snowglobes before you give yourself an aneurysm, alright?" He teased, lightly bumping her shoulder with his.
She sighed, "Alright. Fine. I just… want everything to look splendid, you know? After all, this will be our first official Christmas together."
"And I am very much looking forward to it," he leaned over and planted a loving kiss to her lips. "You have nothing to worry about, believe me. With all the goodies we got already, our place is gonna look like the very definition of Christmas!"
Hayden suddenly paused, a thoughtful look gracing his features. "Although, I guess technically this is going to be my first Christmas in general, considering…" He trailed off, his expression slightly falling.
Arielle immediately knew what he was talking about.
"Honey, come on, let's try not to think about that. The important thing is that I'm going to be with you, we're going to be together, and so will all of our friends too. That's what really matters."
Hayden was silent for a moment, then he nodded. "Yeah. Yeah, you're right. I'm sorry for being such a downer. The most important thing is the here and now."
Arielle nodded. "Exactly. So, right now, let's continue looking for that giant nutcracker you kept pestering me about. Even though I still think it's going to look weird next to the Christmas tree."
"Hey! I'll have you know, I'm the master decorator! I know what I'm doing, thank you very much."
She laughed. "I'm sure you do. Now, come on, let's keep looking."
As they walked throughout the store,  they picked up various decorations along the way, slowly filling their cart to the brim with Christmas adornments. They continued searching the aisles until they finally found the aforementioned nutcracker, which Hayden effortlessly picked up and placed onto their cart.
"..And, that should be all! I think we've gotten everything on the list." Hayden grinned as he looked down at the nearly bursting cart.
"You sure about that, honey? Because I think we're missing something very important." Arielle purred, suddenly holding up a mistletoe.
Hayden raised a brow. "Oh, yeah? I wasn't aware that was on the list. Not that I'm complaining."
She simply smiled at him, then raised it above her head, and feigned a look of surprise. "Look, there’s mistletoe! We have to kiss, it’s the law."
He laughed. "Oh, it's the law now, is it?"
"Yes, it is. Now, come over here, handsome." She beckoned him with a finger.
"As you wish, my lady."
He wiggled his eyebrows as he walked towards her, grabbing her by the hips, and pulling her close. Their lips crashed together passionately as soon as their bodies collided.
Arielle responded immediately, wrapping her arms around his neck as she deepened the kiss. Once they broke apart, they pressed their foreheads together and softly gazed into each other's eyes.
Hayden smiled, "I'm so thankful for you."
She smiled back at him, and gave him one last kiss. "I feel the same way. I love you, Hayden."
"And I love you, Arielle. More than anything."

3. @choicesholidays for I miss my mom, mother's day.
Tumblr media
"Mom," Savannah's voice trembled over the trans-Atlantic phone call.
Bianca woke up a bit late today after yesterday's neighborhood ranch party. She was still in daze when she picked up the call. "Savannah? Early in the morning? All well?" She was used to getting afternoon calls from her daughter who stayed on the island of Corsica. The place was clockwise 7 hours ahead of her home in Texas. They had set up a routine where Savannah would call after she called it a day in Corsica while Bianca would have just finished her lunch. This early morning call meant Savannah was calling in the middle of her day, leaving Bianca worried.
"Mom, he is … He is here."
"He? Who are you…Oh!" Suddenly it dawned on Bianca whom her daughter is talking about and why her voice is so unstable.
"Is he there on an official tour or…"
"He came to meet me, meet us."
"Does he know?"
"He knows everything." Savannah sighed.
"Oh dear! Is he going to… I mean what is he planning?"
"He came to clear the misunderstandings, Mom."
"Savvie, we knew this would happen one day. Thankfully, he is not here to do any harm."
"But mom, what if…"
"You need to give him a chance, my child. You know he is not any regular guy."
"It's not about him. It's about me, what If I'm not…"
"Savannah Jane Walker, never ever think less about you. Don't be so harsh on yourself. I know it's a tough decision but I believe in you and I trust that you will take a wise step."
Savannah whispered over a sob, "Thank you mom."
Bianca picked up her deflated tone, "Hey girl, don't cry. Don't be afraid. You are not alone.
Whatever you decide, I will be with you."
"I know mom. You have always been. I have to go now. Will call you later."
"Bye sweetheart. God bless you."
Savannah gave an assertive reply and ended the call.
Her hand was still clutching the phone while Bianca's eyes were fixed far away in the distance… Memories of yesteryears replaying in front of her eyes.
****************
Few years ago…..
It was a busy day at the ranch. Bianca was tending to a filly in the stables when John came in search of her. "There you are! You gotcha mail." He waved a white envelope in the air.
"Mail?" Blanca wondered. She had all her bills cleared. There should not be any new notice from any of the banks now. She rubbed away the dirt on her hands on the sides of her apron and extended her arm to grab the envelope with a feeling of dread.
"Thank you John." She flipped the cover to find out from whom it was, but the sender information was blank.
John still stood there, curiously eyeing the mail. She tore the envelope trying to curb her own anxiety. When she saw Savannah's neat handwriting, she let out a sigh of relief. "It's from Savannah." She waved of her hand, making it light to John.
He too smiled and took her leave. She stood there with a smile plastered on her face. As soon as he went out of sight, Bianca rushed into her home. She was restless and this letter might give her some clue. Savannah had been out of reach for the past few days. Her phone wasn't working. Bastein had no clue where she was and it had left Bianca biting her nails.
She sat on her bed and withdrew her reading glasses from the rustic bedside drawer.
" Dear Mom,
I know you must be worried about my whereabouts. Please be assured that I am absolutely fine and safe and I will call you soon.
Mom, you were right in guessing the reason for my happiness in the last few months. Well, you have always been right.  I did finally feel complete with the man of my dreams. I thought maybe one day I will be able to tell you everything.
Even after Drake left Cordonia, I never felt alone.  There was this man… I have always liked him. Two months ago, a small accident brought us closer and then one day I couldn't stop myself and we broke all the barriers to be together. I was happy and that's when you too picked the signs . You were right mom.
But I guess Walker's are never meant to live an easy life. I don't know how to say this. It's a bit awkward to tell you all of this through a letter. I conceived, Mom. I wanted to tell him first, but things took a nasty turn here and I couldn't let him know. Moreover, he is kind of from a noble family so he cannot take the responsibility. My presence here will be a deterrent to his duties and so to make things easier for everyone, I decided to leave Cordonia forever. Maybe there’s another universe where we have the happy ending we always wanted.
I am sorry if I let you down but I still want to say this to you that you are the best and I am missing you even more at this turning point of my life. I am in a bit of Hurry now but I promise I will call you as soon as I reach my destination.
I love you, Mom.
Your daughter,
Savvie.

Bianca removed her glasses to wipe the tears in her eyes. "My little girl!" She held the letter to her heart. " I am so sorry you have to go through all these things alone."
As she cried, her eyes rested on the bedside photo frame of them together. She picked it up and looked at Savannah and said. "My baby, I knew it from the beginning. I wish I had warned you to keep your feelings for him locked inside. It's impossible to not fall in love with him, my child but he is a royal. There is no future there, at least not under Constantine's watch."
She closed her eyes praying, "Dear God, please help my children. Help Savannah and Liam to find their path together."
Liam always held a special place in Bianca's heart. As a young boy, he had shown compassion and love to one and all, be it noble or commoner. He never differentiated, even when he grew up to be a crown prince. He was the reason for Drake's stability after Jackson's death. He always stole her heart when he covered up for Savannah with his innocent smile. Many such moments made her believe Liam to be an extended part of her family. She knew Savvie and Liam would be together one day but she never thought their relationship would be so short lived.
She tried to get over her wavering mind and continued praying, " God, please give me the strength to support my daughter through her difficult times till she gets back to him."
And so the years passed on while Bianca remained hopeful for that day to arise when her prayers would be answered.
********************
Present day....
Bianca smiled wistfully. She kept the phone back on the table and reclined in her bed. "Thank you my lord, It's finally over. My children are going to unite again."
She got up and opened the side drawers to retrieve a photo frame. She placed Liam's photo next to Savannah'sphoto that was already there and gave them a flying kiss. "God bless you both."
Bianca stood as a pillar in Savannah's life in the years she lived estranged. It was all worth it in the end.

Reyna wasn’t supposed to arrive in Cordonia until later in the evening, but after days of poking and prodding from her aunt during their week-long trip to the mountains, wanting to know what was going on between her and Liam, she finally caved. She detailed Liam’s confession of how he felt, their last conversation and how she’d tried to tell him she felt the same but how he’d been so convinced she’d fallen out of love with him over the years that he wouldn’t let her say anything, and how she’d given him her journal that was filled with three years worth of letters to him expressing what he refused to let her say out loud.
Next thing Reyna knew, Aunt Elsie — who’d always been the biggest cheerleader when it came to the two of them being together — was on the phone with an old friend of hers, cashing in what she claimed was a long overdue favor to get her on an earlier flight, cutting their trip a bit short.
When Reyna arrived in Cordonia that morning, she headed straight to the palace. The first person she ran into was Leo; he told her Liam wasn’t there, but that he was set to return that evening. She planned to wait for him, but Leo — who noticed his brother had been acting a bit oddly since his return from New York — knew Liam would probably enjoy the surprise, and insisted that she go to him; he pulled a guard aside and instructed him to take her to Valtoria.
And now, here she was.
Hovering in the doorway of the master suite inside the estate, Reyna stared at Liam; he was seated on the bed, hunched over with the palm of one hand pressed against his temple to prop his head up, shielding his face from her view. His other hand gripped the top of her journal to keep it open as he read what appeared to be the last page.
Hearing his breath hitch, Reyna’s brows rounded in concern. “Liam?”
When he lifted his red-rimmed gaze and Reyna saw his tear-stained face, she felt her chest tighten as she took a tentative step over the threshold. His brows knit and more tears started to fall as he stared at her for a heartbeat, and in the next, he was standing and moving towards her.
Liam’s arms wrapped tightly around Reyna and she instinctively returned the embrace; his wet cheek pressed against hers as he tightened his hold. His whole body was taut and his shoulders shook as he silently cried.
“Liam …”
“I’m sorry,” he choked out. “I should’ve listened. And I’m … I’m so sorry, Rey.”
Reyna closed her eyes against the sting in them as he held her even tighter. She drew back just enough to look at him, needing to slightly arch because his hold on her wouldn’t loosen. Shifting her arms from around his neck, she cupped his face in her hands, gently brushing away the tears from his cheeks before they were replaced by more. She held his misty blue-eyed gaze for a moment as her own tears started to fall. “Now you understand,” she said, and his chin trembled as he nodded. “I never stopped loving you, Liam. Not for one single day.”
Hearing her words, Liam felt his heart — which was beating so hard in his chest he swore she could both hear and feel it — swell, and every heartachingly, longing-filled word he’d read in that journal filled his head again. All this time … the three years they were apart and even in the last year since they reunited … she had loved him through it all.
With her hands still cupping his face, she tilted hers toward him. She brushed her thumb against his bottom lip before drawing him to her, closing the scant distance between them when she pressed her lips to his. He sighed into the kiss, tasting the salt from both their tears as an otherworldly force pulsed through him.
It was like a long-missing piece had finally returned and locked itself into place right where it belonged. It felt like home — she felt like home.
And for the first time in years, he felt whole.
“I love you, Liam,” Reyna whispered against his lips; she barely got his name out before he kissed her again.
Hearing her say those three words again after so long awoke something inside Liam that he wasn’t sure he’d ever feel again. “I love you, too.” He kissed her again. “I’ve always loved you.” Another kiss. “And I always will.”
Liam kissed her again, and when her lips parted against his, a rush of air escaped him and his body shuddered when his tongue met hers. Keeping his one arm wrapped tightly around her waist, his free hand came up, sliding across her cheek and into her hair until it curled around the nape of her neck as he deepened the kiss. It was all-consuming, stealing the very breath from his lungs.
When Liam heard a whisper of a moan slip from her lips, something inside him snapped at the sound, his usual ability to keep himself controlled shredding at the seams. His hands dropped to the hem of her shirt and he was lifting it a heartbeat later, only breaking the kiss to pull it over her head, and as he did, she was tugging at his. He took the cue, reaching back with one hand to pull it off, and dropping it to the floor as his lips found hers again.
Wrapping one arm around her, Liam spun her away from the door, swinging his other arm out and closing it before effortlessly lifting her; her legs wrapped around him as he carried her toward the bed.
There was a tangle of arms and hands as they stripped one another of their remaining clothing between passion-filled kisses and their hands exploring each newly exposed area of skin.
With the rest of their clothes now strewn haphazardly on the floor, Liam finally drew back to take in her bare body beneath him. The years of painful longing — of wishing for just a single kiss, touch … even a mere word — came to a halt. He had no more reasons to wish, to yearn for her. She was there. They were together. And he knew it was going to be different because there was nothing standing in their way this time.
It was going to last.
It was going to be forever.
Liam slowly skimmed a hand along the curve of her body, pausing on her thigh as his gaze shifted back up to hers. “Say it again,” he whispered.
Reyna softly smiled. “I love you.”
A breath fell from her lips as they parted when she felt Liam’s hand slip between them and a finger slide against her. When he felt how ready she was, an impatient groan escaped him; he had every intention of savoring every part of her later, but at that moment, he needed to feel all of her.
In the next moment, Reyna gasped followed by a moan when she felt him filling her; Liam slowly pushed home inch by inch until he was buried to the hilt. He dropped his head to her shoulder as a moan rumbled from deep within his chest at the feeling of being wrapped around her again.
Another moment later, Liam lifted his head when he felt her fingers lace with his, and his eyes searched hers as he began to move. “You’re mine,” he whispered with a thrust of his hips, the words spoken with a hint of question behind them.
“I’m yours,” Reyna assured him. “I’ve always been yours, Liam.”
Another moan escaped him, in part from her words, in part from the way she took him even deeper when her legs wrapped around him. He found her lips again with another thrust as her hands curled around his neck and into his hair. “I’ve only ever been yours,” he whispered.
Liam drew out each stroke, prolonging the moment as long as he could until they were panting between impassioned kisses and moans, both on the edge of release.
When he picked up his pace, Reyna clung to him, and Liam didn’t relent until her back arched off the bed and his name dripped from her lips in a mantra of breathy moans. He followed a moment later, a gravelly groan ripping from his throat and his entire body going taut as he dropped his head to the crook of her neck.
After several long moments, as they both still trembled and tried to catch their breath, Liam lifted his gaze to hers; Reyna brushed a few stray locks of his tousled hair away from his forehead before she lifted her head to press a soft kiss to it, then to the bridge of his nose, then to his lips. He returned the kiss, savoring the slow curl of her tongue against his.
“I love you,” Liam whispered when they parted for a breath. “I love you so damn much, Rey.”
A sated, heartwarming smile curled on Reyna’s lips. “I love you, too.”
****
A while later, Liam and Reyna lay curled up in the bed; his arm was wrapped around her as he stroked his fingers idly along the length of her spine and their limbs were tangled beneath the sheets. Neither was in any rush to leave the other’s embrace.
Liam’s gaze shifted down to where her head rested on his chest; her fingertip traced lazy shapes against his skin as she stared off, seemingly in deep thought. “What are you thinking about?”
“You,” Reyna answered with a sigh before tilting her head back to look at him. “You and this and … us.”
“What about it?” Liam asked as he gently swept a few wisps of hair off her cheek.
“How we’re going to make this work. Because I don’t …” Reyna dropped his gaze, biting her lip somewhat self-consciously. “I don’t want to be without you anymore, Liam. I want to be wherever you are.”
Liam’s thumb scooped beneath her chin and tilted her gaze back to his. He searched her eyes for a moment before capturing her lips in his as he shifted, guiding her back against the mattress. He wanted that, too. After spending so long apart and knowing what he knew now after reading the letters inside that journal, he didn’t want to be without her. Not ever again.
And he had but one thought at that moment.
When he drew back, Liam’s thumb softly stroked her cheek, staring at her with nothing but unadulterated adoration. “Then marry me …”
“What?” Reyna gasped as her eyes widened. “Liam, we … we just got back on track. Hell, we’ve only been on track for like … an hour.”
“Rey … had the past gone differently, I have no doubts that I would have already taken that leap with you, but … things didn’t turn out that way. Yet, in all the time we were apart, nothing about our feelings — about the love we have for each other — changed. I don’t want to be without you either because we’ve spent long enough apart.” Liam was silent for a few moments as she took in his words. “You love me?”
“More than anything,” Reyna answered without hesitation.
“And I love you. That’s all that matters.” The pad of Liam’s thumb brushed over her lips. “I told you four years ago in Applewood that you were it for me, and those words are as true today as they were back then. It’s always been you and it will always be you. There is no one else I want to be with … to spend my life with … than you, Rey. And there never will be.” She took in a breath … and then smiled as she held his blue-eyed gaze. He smiled in return as he leaned down, grazing his lips against hers. “Say yes,” he whispered. “Say you’ll marry me …”

While waiting in the lunch rush lines in the cafeteria, Sienna reminded her roommates of their party assignments. “...I’ve got the treats covered, Elijah is handling the music, Jackie is making jingle juice-”
“Hell yeah!” Elijah exclaimed, giving Jackie a high-five.
“The tree isn’t the only thing getting lit this year,” she said coolly.
“Oh, and don’t forget your white elephant gifts!” Sienna also reminded them.
“Shit, I forgot about that. What are the rules again?” Jackie asked.
“The only rule is you can’t buy anything,” Sienna answered.
“I’ll go shop the lost and found when we’re done here.”
“Or, I saw some pharma reps in the atrium earlier. You could try to hit them up for some swag,” Sawyer chimed in.
When the group reached the front of the line, a heavy arm slipped around Sawyer’s shoulders. “Thanks for saving my spot, Brooks,” Bryce winked, cutting in line.
“Do you meatheads have to cut into everything?” Jackie barked.
Bryce chomped into the apple he hadn’t yet paid for. “Yep,” he nodded with a big toothy grin. “I’m just trying to get on the naughty list. If you all want to join me, we could save Santa a trip this year,” he joked.
“You’re already looking at Santa’s favorite ho,” Jackie quipped.
“Brooksie, I actually am in a hurry. I need to scrub in for a lymphadenectomy. Do you mind?” he asked seriously.
Sawyer tilted her head to the register, gesturing for him to go ahead.
“Thanks.” When the cashier asked if they were together, Bryce said yes.
“Bryce, you don’t have to-”
He placed a hand on the small of her back. "I've got you, Ipo. I'll see you later," he promised before hurrying away.
“Girl, what are you holding out for? He's hot and he's totally into you,” Sienna teased, once Bryce was out of earshot.
Sawyer lifted her tray and turned to her friend. She opened her mouth to say something, but froze when she spotted a six-foot-four-inch, blue-eyed attending at the adjacent register. Not knowing how much he saw or heard, a blush of embarrassment colored her cheeks. Feeling like a shy teenager at a school dance, Sawyer hoped the interaction with Bryce hadn’t given her crush the wrong impression.
As Ethan raised his eyes to her, he gave no indication. Pocketing his wallet, he stoically turned and exited the cafeteria.
Tumblr media
As their shift ended, Sawyer approached her roommates who were walking in the opposite direction down the hall.
“Locker room is that way, Brooks,” Jackie pointed.
“I know, I just need to run and check on one more patient before I clock out.”
“Do you want us to wait for you?” Sienna asked.
“No, don’t wait up. I’ll be right behind you.”
After making sure the coast was clear, Sawyer slipped behind the plastic curtain that sealed off the construction wing. Naveen spiked a fever earlier in the day, and she wanted to check on him before going home. She found him fast asleep, and after checking his monitors and medications, she quietly tidied the room. When she finished, she softly closed the door behind her, whispering, “Goodnight, Dr. B.”
On her way to dispose of some trash, Sawyer’s phone buzzed in her pocket.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bryce knocked and let himself in, making a beeline to the kitchen to find Sienna. “Help?” he asked, lifting a roll of wrapping paper and tape.
She looked at him puzzled. “Where’s your gift?”
“You're looking at it.” He beckoned her to the living room, where he laid down on the floor.
“You’re ridiculous, you know that?” she laughed, kneeling next to him.
A few minutes later, Sienna placed the last piece of tape, securing the wrapping around Bryce’s torso. Using all of her body weight, she rolled him to his back and slid him under the Christmas tree.
“Si?” he called, his voice muffled. “Do me a favor and start the game sooner than later. I already have to pee.”
Tumblr media
In the locker room, Sawyer traded her white coat for her winter one. As she gathered her things, her phone buzzed with an incoming call.
“Hi,” she answered.
“Hi. By any chance, are you still at the hospital?” Ethan asked.
“I am.”
“Could I ask you for a favor? I’ve had something come up at the last minute. Would you be able to stay with Naveen for a few hours?”
By now, Sawyer had come to know Ethan Ramsey well enough to know that he would not ask for help unless he was desperate. “Sure. Is everything okay?”
“Yes. I’m pressed for time right now, but I’ll explain later. I’ll relieve you as soon as I can.”
“No problem.”
“Thanks, Rookie.”
Sawyer was about to text Sienna when Danny entered the room.
“Hey, Sawyer,” he waved. “I thought you’d be at home getting ready for the party. I’m heading there now if you want a ride.”
“Danny, I’m so glad you’re here! Could you take something to Sienna for me? I’m not going to make it home for a while.”
“How come?”
She made sure they were alone and lowered her voice. “Dr. Ramsey got tied up with something and asked if I would look after Patient X for a few hours.”
“You should go and have fun with your roommates, Sawyer. I can stay,” he insisted, having been recruited by Ethan shortly after Naveen agreed to be treated.
“That’s really sweet of you, Danny, but I know you traded shifts so you could be off tonight. Besides, Sienna baked a batch of peppermint chocolate chip cookies just for you.”
“She did?” he smiled.
“Yeah. Go. Have fun. I’ll be there as soon as Dr. R gets here.”
After Danny left with what appeared to be a wrapped bedpan, she updated her roommate.
Tumblr media
Later, Sawyer was in Naveen’s room, scrolling through Pictagram when her phone vibrated with a new text notification.
Tumblr media
Several hours had passed when Sawyer felt a hand on her shoulder.
“Rookie?”
“Hiiiii,” she managed through a yawn.
“I’m so sorry,” Ethan apologized.
“Huh? What time is it?” Sawyer reached for her phone, noticing several missed calls from Sienna and Bryce.
“It’s almost four in the morning. I would have been here sooner, but I accidentally dozed off,” he explained, helping her to her feet.
“It’s okay. There's no doubt you probably needed it. And it’s been quiet here. His fever finally broke a little while ago.”
“Good. Go home and get some sleep,” he instructed, “I’ll tell Ines that you’ll be in this afternoon.”
“Okay.” Sawyer shouldered her bag and headed for the door. “Good night."
“Sawyer?”
“Yeah?”
“Thank you.”
With a shake of the snow from her coat, Sawyer entered her apartment and found Landry eating breakfast at the kitchen table. “Oh boy. It looks like Santa threw up in here.”
“Smells like it too,” he grumbled.
“I’m surprised you’re still going in early after…,” she circled her hand in the air, “all of this.”
“Yeah, well, not all of us are lucky enough to get preferential treatment from Dr. Ramsey.”
“Excuse me?”
“What? This is the second time he’s personally assigned you a case. To my knowledge, he hasn’t assigned cases to any of the other interns in the competition.”
“Wow. Well, maybe if you ever crack the top five, he will.” She let him chew on that as she hung her coat and walked to her room.
Tumblr media
Bryce turned from the surgical board and spotted Sawyer approaching. “Finally coming to collect your prize, Brooksie?”
Sawyer rolled her eyes.
“What’s wrong? Do you not like your gift?”
“You’re ridiculous,” she shook her head with an amused smile.
“So I’ve been told. By the way, this gift comes with a night on the town.”
Unbeknownst to her, Dr. Ramsey inconveniently emerged from a nearby patient’s room, catching the tail end of their conversation.
“Bryce-”
But before she could protest, he backed his way down the hall. “I’ve gotta run. Check your schedule and let me know when to pick you up. And you should know, I have a strict ‘no rejections’ policy.”
She sighed deeply once his back was to her, then turned to find Ethan standing a couple feet away, his eyes focused on the tablet in his hand.
“Dr. Ramsey,” she acknowledged sheepishly.
Ethan glanced at her with a side eye. “Brooks.”
“Rrrrr! Of course he is here right now!” As they moved on to their next tasks, Sawyer told herself it was time for a heart to heart with Bryce.
Tumblr media
"Excuse me, would you please page Dr. Ramsey?"
A few minutes later, Ethan met an attractive woman at the nurses’ station and led her away from the busybodies seated at the circular desk. As they walked down the hall, she handed him a small box. “Thank you, Jen. I really appreciate this. I’ll send you the outcome report as soon as the trial period ends.”
Stepping in front of him, Jen pulled him to the side until their shoulders hugged the wall. "It was great to see you again." She paused as a couple nurses walked past. "We had a good time last night, didn’t we?"
“It was nice to catch up.”
She didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but when Sawyer heard the familiar voice, she wondered if her ears were deceiving her.
“Listen, I would love to see you again tonight,” Jen continued, reaching for the end of his tie and running it through her fingers. “I’m staying at The Langham. Come have drinks with me and…,” she shrugged, "we can see where things go from there.”
“I-”
Stepping out from the vending machine alcove, Sawyer turned her head in their direction.
Ethan’s surprised eyes met hers, finding only hurt. He moved Jen’s hand back to her side as Sawyer spun and walked briskly in the opposite direction.
“Jen, you’ll have to excuse me. I need to go,” he apologized, watching the woman he longed for retreat and disappear from sight. “I appreciate your assistance. I will speak with you later.”
“Later tonight?”
“I’ll text you,” he said as he sidestepped her.
Ethan’s long strides carried him down the hall quickly. He nearly collided with a visitor as he rounded the corner. “I’m sorry. Excuse me.”
Tumblr media
In the far corner of the cafeteria, Sawyer watched the snow fall in the empty courtyard. The sound of metal chair legs scraping against the tiled floor jarred her from her thoughts.
“I’ve been looking all over for you.”
“Why? Need another favor?” she said, words laced with disdain.
“Rookie, that-”
“Dr. Ramsey, I haven’t been helping you to win favor or get a leg up in the competition. If you want an intern to run errands and cover for your ass, then let me suggest Dr. Olsen. He'd be more than happy to fill that role.”
She lowered her voice, hurt replacing anger. “I canceled plans with my roommates last night, because I believed that if you were asking for help, it must have been important. If I had known I was only covering so that you could go on a date and get…” She let the rest of the sentence die on her tongue. “Sorry. I know it’s none of my business how you spend your free time, but I won’t let you take advantage of mine.”
Visibly disappointed, she avoided eye contact. Ethan keenly observed that her disappointment went beyond merely thinking he would take advantage of her kindness. If he was reading the situation correctly, it was the same disappointment he had felt seeing her with the surgical intern.
“Sawyer, let me explain. Jen works for Phlaum Pharmaceuticals. They are currently conducting a trial on a new antibiotic for sepsis. I reached out to her when I heard about it. Her team is in the area promoting a new product this week. You may have noticed her reps in the lobby. She made herself available to meet with me last night. And after some convincing, she agreed to pull some strings to get Naveen into the trial. She was here this afternoon to drop off the treatment.” Ethan pulled a small vial from his pocket and placed it on the table.
“It sounded like you convinced her all right,” she muttered.
“Rookie. I know we haven’t known each other long, but do you honestly believe I’m the type of person who would trade sexual favors? I agreed to a testimonial and a couple expo appearances. That’s all.”
“What? Can you blame me for going there? She said she had a ‘good time,’ and you told me you were late because you ‘accidentally dozed off,’ then she asked you to meet her again tonight…At. A. Hotel.”
He shook his head and pinched the bridge of his nose at her teasing dramatization, failing to hide the crack of a smile.
“So, how’d you get out of it?” she wondered.
“I told her I would text her later.”
“You don’t text.”
“Exactly.” His knee touched hers, but neither one attempted to move away. “I need to get back upstairs. Can you meet me later to review the trial protocols?”
“I have a few patients to check on. I’ll page you after?” she answered.
Ethan scooted back in his chair, but before standing, he covered Sawyer’s hand with his own.
“Sawyer, your contributions and the sacrifice of your time have not gone unnoticed. And as far as I’m concerned, you are my partner on this case. I should have filled you in on the drug trial. I just didn’t want either of us to get our hopes up.”
“Thank you, Dr. Ramsey.” When he moved to stand, she followed. “I’m finished here. I’ll head back up with you.”
The elevator doors were halfway closed when a fellow intern squeezed his way through.
“Hi, Brad,” Sawyer greeted.
“Sooo, who’s the lucky guy?” he quizzed, embarrassingly indiscreet.
“Pardon?”
“Come on, girl. Why else would you ditch us last night? Your roommates say you’re never home. You rarely come out for drinks anymore. And, you’ve parked Bryce in the friend zone.” Brad nudged her shoulder with his. “Spill the tea.”
“Sorry to disappoint, TMZ, but I’m not dating anyone. I got stuck here with a last minute case.” She made her eyes big and subtly tipped her head toward Dr. Ramsey as a warning. Luckily, Brad picked up on the cue, sparing her from having to tell any more white lies.
Ethan hid a smile, pretending not to notice the act.
“Any chance you guys will host again for New Years? You’re the only ones with an apartment big enough,” Brad asked as they exited the elevator together.
“Talk to Elijah. He’s the party planner of the group.”
Once Brad was on his way, Ethan reached for Sawyer's elbow drawing her back. “You skipped your own party?”
She shrugged. “You needed my help, and our patient wasn’t in any condition to be left alone.”
“You should have told me. I would have figured something else out…” He looked into her eyes with a sense of wonder. “Thank you. I owe you one.”
She smiled up at him. “You’re welcome.”
“So, what excuse did you give your roommates?” he asked as they walked side by side down the hall.
“About that…” she said with a tense grin, “I’m gonna need you to assign some of your cases to the other interns in the top five.”
“Come again?”

The Moments In Between
Tumblr media
I am participating in @choicesflashfics prompt : “I don’t have a date, so would you ... maybe want to be my plus one?” will appear in bold
I am also participating in @choiceschallenge-may2023 for falling in love.
Letting you know now, this story is probably the most canon I have written. This is not my OG Riley and Liam  and in this universe Liam and Riley did not spend the night together as all my other headcanon stories have them.  Liam has kept his emotional distance like canon.....which has invited the opportunity for Drake to make an appearance.
This could be seen as a prequel to  If Only for the Night
The Book:  TRR Pairings:  Riley x Drake? Warnings and Ratings:  None! Word Count: 1121 Summary:  Riley meets Drake in the Lythikos wine cellar for a drink Song Inspiration:  That Don’t Impress Me Much by Shania Twain
A/N: I’m sure this title has been used in fics before, so hopefully no one is offended by it, but I’m taking it from the Canon diamond scene.
AN2:  This story actually came to my mind because of a conversation I had with @angelasscribbles as we were talking about Drake. I had thought then, that conversation would not give me any writing ideas, but SURPRISE!
Original post:  05.27.23 at 9:31PM  EST.
To be honest, I wasn’t even surprised about how the trip was going being in Lythikos for Olivia’s tribute to Prince Liam.  The room she put me in was basically a refurbished broom closet, dinner was served to my table cold with portions of the entree missing.
But what struck me and what did surprise me is that Liam didn’t notice, and never checked up on us, supposedly his true blue friends were all sitting at the neglected table and he didn’t even glance in our direction the whole evening.
And not to mention….the kiss. He let her kiss him in front of the whole court. He genuinely appeared surprised when it happened, but everyone at the table, all their eyes were trained on me for a response.  I mean honestly, what could I say?
Tumblr media
Prince Liam is not my boyfriend, I’m a suitor in this game we’re all playing.  I am competing for a man that at this point has no true allegiance to me.
Nonchalantly I shrugged my shoulders.  “She went for it.  You know, she doesn’t usually get this much individual time with the Prince, so I can’t fault her for shooting her shot.”
“You’re a lot calmer than I thought you would be, Brooks.”
“I mean, these so-called 'noble' royals have been showing me who they are this whole time, I’d be a fool not to believe them.”
Tumblr media
“You deserve a drink Brooks,  meet up with me later, and we’ll find where the good stuff you like is stored in this keep.”
“I really might have to take you up on that.”
Liam finally cornered me for a brief moment, as I stood on the balcony letting the cool wind in a way revitalize me.
“Are you angry with me for what happened?”
“No.”
“I thought you might be.”
“How can I Liam? you haven’t so much as stated any intentions you have for me, or of any feelings for me because you say, you can’t.  You have a duty to your people and I get that.  But don’t forget, all of us are “your people, and we are getting mistreated by some of these people that are supposed to be the “Nobility.”
“I heard about what happened to you all with your meals by the waitstaff, it’s very unfortunate.”
“You mean what they were told to do to us  by the Duchess of the Keep?”
Liam took his hands in mine.
“Let me make it up to you. Come meet me tonight.  My room has the most beautiful view of the Lythikos landscape and a wonderful hot tub that I have yet to want to use, but would love to enjoy it with you.”
Seriously Liam? That don’t impress me much.
Tumblr media
 I thought in my head.
“It’s been a really long day Liam.”
Liam frowned for a moment.  His smile returned as he kissed my hand.
“I promise you it will be relaxing, and I’ll keep my hands to myself, that is unless you want a massage.”
I felt my resolve wavering for a moment but then it recharged when I remembered all the bad treatment I had experienced while visiting in Lythikos thanks to the Scarlett Duchess herself.
“I’ll wait for you just the same.”
“If I’m not too tired by the end of these festivities, I’ll definitely meet you.”
My mind  was already made up as I walked away from him.
That evening when I made it back to the cupboard under the stairs that was my room,  I freshened up a bit, and changed my clothes.  I had more than one choice and I had decided how I wanted to spend my evening.
And I feel like I made the right decision as when he turned around he genuinely looked surprised to see me.
“Hey! I don’t have a date, so would you maybe want to be my plus one?”
“Brooks!  I didn’t think you would show.  I had heard Liam had invited you…”
“I could use that drink more, it’s been a helluva day.  This is how the working class unwinds, not in hot tubs and seeing glorious views of the Lythikos backcountry. If we’re being totally honest, the Lythikos backcountry can kiss my rounded backside.”
Tumblr media
Drake laughed.
“I hear that.  Sounds like you’re ready to start popping some bottles?”
“Hell yeah I am!”
I started going through the bottles of Wine in the cellar, when I noticed Drake wasn’t doing the same.
“Aren’t you going to pick some too?”
“Naw, I brought my stash. This was more about you, I know today was a rough day for you.”
Drake produced a silver and black flask with the Cordonian Crest on it.
“I mean not really, people have been showing me their true colors since I got here.  And Liam, can’t be who he was when he was in New York here, at least not in public. So is that Whiskey? The third Level of your food group pyramid?”
“Hey if that’s the third level, what are the first two?”
“Isn’t it obvious?  Meat  is level one, Potatoes are level two.”
“You get me Brooks, and yes it’s Whiskey.”
“So are you sharing that?”
Tumblr media
“I can.  You know you’re really a lot different than I thought you were when we all first met in New York.”
“You should know not to judge a book by its cover Drake, as much as the Nobility of Cordonia are constantly judging you here.”
“You’re different.”
“No, I’m the same, you just didn’t see me for who I truly was before, and now you’re finally getting a glimpse.”
Was Drake Walker blushing, and why was he staring at me that way?
“This is me relaxed, just being myself.  Not behaving like a trained dolphin for the cameras.  The moments in between where I get to be just Riley. You know, this is the most we’ve talked Walker, you’re not half bad.”
Drake was staring at me as if he was in  some sort of trance, after a few moments he snapped out of it.
“We should toast.  To the moments in between where we can relax and be ourselves, with no added pressure.”
He took a sip from the flask and held it out to me, right when I was about to grab it, he snatched it back.
“Pass it here, I don’t have mouth herpes or anything. Besides, the alcohol would kill the germs anyway.”
He looked to be weighing the validity of the idea in his head for a few moments and then came up to the resolution, nodding to me in agreement.
“Seems legit.”
I held up the flask and before I drank, I smiled at Drake.
“To the moments in between.”

Tumblr media
Brooklyn Heights, New York City
As the season's first snowflakes fell softly on the ground, Riley sat curled up on her couch, a soft blanket tucked around her legs, her laptop balanced on her knees. William, who had spent the afternoon playing with his toy train and building blocks, was now napping peacefully beside her.
Riley was lost in thought, the events of the past few days weighed heavily on her mind. She had read the news about Madeleine's pregnancy and had read the press statements on the internet. She was more than surprised by the announcement and curious about Liam's reaction to Madeleine’s revelations. Of all the questions she had, what bothered her most was the question of what would happen next. She couldn't imagine the stress Liam was under, but she also couldn't help but feel a sense of relief that the marriage was finally over.
Riley was drawn from her thoughts by the sound of her cell phone ringing. She reached over and picked it up, glancing at the caller ID. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw that it was Maxwell. She took a deep breath and answered the call. "Maxwell, hello!" she said, trying to sound casual.
"Riley! I am so glad I got a hold of you! Are you doing alright? “I just wanted to make sure you were ok.” Maxwell's voice was filled with concern. Riley could hear the background noise of the city through the phone, and she could picture him rushing down the busy streets of the Capital, his phone tucked between his ear and his shoulder. "Did you see the news? How are you holding up?"
"I'm okay, Maxwell. A little shocked, but okay." Riley paused, her mind racing. She wasn't sure how much she should reveal, but she knew that she could trust Maxwell. "To be honest, I've been thinking a lot about Liam and wondering how he's doing. Do you know if he is alright?"
Maxwell hesitated for a moment before responding. "I'm not sure, Riley. He was not taking questions after the press conference. When Drake and I tried to get his attention, he was called away by his advisors, but he did smile back at us. I think he'll be okay." He paused again, and Riley could tell that he was carefully choosing his words. "Look, Riley...I don't want to keep secrets from you, and there's something you should know."
Riley's heart started to race. "What is it, Maxwell?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"There's no easy way to say this, so I'm just going to be blunt. Liam is coming to New York, Riley. He's coming to find you."
Riley was speechless. Her mind was reeling, and her heart was pounding. She had so many questions, but all she could manage to say was, "He's coming here?"
"Yes, he's arriving tonight. Look, Riley, I know you're probably not ready to see him yet, and that is completely understandable. But I wanted you to hear it from me and not from someone else. And... I just want you to be prepared."
Riley's head was spinning, and she could feel tears starting to well up in her eyes. "Maxwell...I don't know what to say … are you sure about this?"
“Little blossom, yes,” Maxwell responded, somberly.
"You don't have to say anything, Riley. Just promise me that you'll give him a chance. He needs you now, more than you know.”
***
As the snow continued to fall, Riley sat quietly on the couch, staring out the window, lost in thought. Her heart was conflicted. On the one hand, she knew that Liam’s arrival would bring a torrent of emotions and feelings that she was not yet ready to face. But on the other hand, she could not deny that part of her was excited to see him again.
… and William! Riley’s swallowed hard; her hands trembling, as she felt him stir beside her.
The Four Seasons Hotel, Manhattan
Liam stared out of the floor to ceiling window of the penthouse suite, the lights of the Manhattan skyline spread out before him. He was filled with a mixture of anticipation and apprehension. He knew that finding Riley was the first step, but he had no idea how she would react to his arrival. He sighed and turned away from the window, walking over to the bar cart.
“Well, Li, how do I look?” Leo asked, walking out of his room, slipping gold cufflinks into his sleeves.
Liam chuckled and lifted a bottle of Macallen and poured the amber liquid into two crystal tumblers. “Very dapper, brother. I’m sure the ladies will love it.”
“Oh, please. Like I need help getting their attention.” Leo flashed a wicked grin, accepting a tumbler of scotch.
“Right. Just make sure you stay focused, Leo. I am counting on you to stand for and represent the crown.”
Leo raised an eyebrow. “I know, I know. You have nothing to worry about. I will handle the press and keep them off your back.”
Liam nodded, grateful for his brother’s support. “I appreciate it, Leo. What would I do without you.”
“You would be a royal mess, that’s for sure,” Leo quipped.
Just then, a knock at the door interrupted their conversation. Bastien opened the door, allowing for a stream of Liam’s royal guards into the suite.
“Your Majesty, we have a report that the American media has caught wind of your arrival and are converging on the hotel.”
“It’s showtime,” Leo said with a smirk, downing the last of his drink.
Clapping Liam’s shoulder, Leo left with two of the guards to attend the U.N. conference opening ceremonies. Liam had no doubt that his brother would be the center of attention and charm of the press and dignitaries. As Liam finished his scotch, he turned his attention to Bastien.
“Bastien, is the car ready?”
“Yes, Your Majesty, it is waiting downstairs. There is press coverage outside the front entrance; I suggest we exit via the service entrance, Sir.”
“Very well, lead the way.”
The limo ride to Brooklyn was a blur, as Liam’s thoughts were consumed with seeing Riley again. He knew he was taking a significant risk by arriving unannounced, but he could not let another moment go by without reaching out to her.
When the limo finally pulled up in front of her brownstone, he took a shuddered breath as he watched Bastien get out and perform a quick perimeter sweep. Once completed, Bastien returned to open the limo door, and Liam stepped out. As he walked toward the steps and up to her door, the air felt electric, and he could feel his heart racing.
What would she say when she saw him?
Would she even speak to him?
Liam had so many questions, but the only way to find the answers was to take a leap of faith and knock on her door. He hesitated for a moment, then lifted his hand and rapped on the wooden door. After a few moments, the door opened, and Liam’s heart stopped. There she was, the love of his life, the one who had captured his heart and never let go.
“Riley...”- he managed; his voice choked with emotion.
“Liam,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Their eyes locked, and Liam felt as if the rest of the world had melted away. They stood there, staring at each other, both lost for words. Liam’s mind raced, and his heart pounded. He had imagined this moment so many times, but now that he was standing here in front of her, he was paralyzed with fear and uncertainty.
...and, wow, she looked incredible!
Her chestnut hair cascaded over her shoulders, and her chocolate brown eyes sparkled with emotion. She was dressed simply; a soft, silver grey sweater and jeans. But there was no mistaking the elegance and grace that radiated from her. Liam’s breath caught in his throat, and his heart ached with longing.
She was his sun and stars, his everything.
He knew he was in for a battle, but for Riley, it would be worth it.
Riley lost her struggle, her eyes welling with tears.
“Liam...” she managed, before stepping forward and wrapping her arms around his neck.
He held her close, inhaling her scent, savoring the feel of her body against his. It felt like a dream, a moment too good to be true.
“I missed you,” he whispered.
“I missed you, too.” Her voice was a soft murmur, muffled by his shoulder.
Liam felt her trembling, and he pulled away to look into her eyes. “Are you alright?” he asked, concerned.
“I’m fine. I’m just...” she trailed off, unsure how to continue.
He smiled tenderly and gently brushed a strand of hair from her face. “It’s all right. I am not going anywhere.”
His heart was pounding as he looked down into her beautiful eyes, and he knew in that moment that he would do anything for her.
Riley grasped his hand. "Please, please, come in." She turned and pulled him toward the living area and motioned for him to sit on the sofa.
"Would you like something to drink? Wine, scotch, whiskey?" Riley asked.
"Scotch sounds great."
As she busied herself with pouring his drink, Liam took the opportunity to look around her home. It was filled with warmth and love, and it was clear that a family lived there. Toys were neatly gathered beside the fireplace, alongside a bookshelf of children's books.
Riley returned with his scotch and settled onto the couch next to him with bottled water for herself.
“You have a beautiful home, Riley,” Liam commented.
She smiled shyly. “Thank you. It's not quite a palace, but we’re happy here.”
Liam noticed all the pictures, framed and positioned throughout the room. Taking note of the two men and small boy standing beside Riley next to a Christmas tree.
“So, you’ve got a family now. Are you married?”
Riley’s expression grew serious. “No. No, I’m not.”
Liam breathed a sigh of relief. Riley noticed the framed picture Liam referenced.
“Remember, Daniel?” Riley paused, breathing deeply.
“Yes, he worked at the bar...”, Liam’s words trailed off.
“That’s right. Daniel, along with his husband, offered me a place to live, here, when I returned from Cordonia. They didn’t want me to be alone in the city.”
Liam noticed that her hands were trembling as she set her water bottle down on the coffee table.
“Liam...” Riley began, her voice trailing off.
“What is it, Riley? Please tell me.” Liam encouraged, as her eyes filled with tears.
“This is really hard for me.” Riley choked out the words.
“Riley?” Liam questioned softly, placing his hand on hers. The worry now etched on his face.
“There is something I need to tell you, Liam,” her voice wavering. Riley closed her eyes, unable to continue looking at him.
“We have a son. His name is William. He is two years old.” Riley blurted out quickly.
Liam was stunned. Rendered speechless. His head was spinning as he looked into her eyes. He swallowed thickly, not sure what to say.
“Liam, say something,” Riley pleaded.
“We have a son,” Liam said, his voice barely a whisper.
“Yes,” Riley said softly. “I am so, so sorry I didn’t tell you. I wanted to, but it was never the right time.”
Liam took a deep breath and tried to steady himself.
“I know it’s a lot to take in, and I don’t expect you to be okay with it. But I wanted you to know the truth. It was wrong for me to keep it from you.”
“...but I was scared. So scared of what would happen if I stayed in Cordonia. Of what Madeleine would do. Of what that would do to your reputation.”
Liam sat back on the sofa, his gaze not leaving Riley's face.
"I understand why you would feel like you had to do that, Riley. I'm not mad at you," Liam said, his heart heavy.
"How are you feeling?" she asked, concerned.
"Honestly? Confused, hurt, a little angry," Liam admitted.
"I'm so sorry, Liam," Riley said, her voice breaking.
"Riley, I just need some time to process this."
"I understand," Riley said softly.
"Do you want to meet him? William, I mean," she asked.
"Yes," Liam said, his voice choked with emotion. “Very much."
Riley stood up and walked down the hall. Liam followed her and stopped when they reached a door covered in brightly colored stickers.
Sleeping on his side, wrapped in a blue blanket, William slept hugging his Scooby-doo plushie.
Liam's heart swelled with emotion. He knelt beside his bed; eye-level with the little boy.
“This is your son, Liam. William.”
“My son.” He slowly repeated.
Riley's lip trembled, watching his emotions starting to overtake him. “I'm going to leave you alone with him... if that is OK. I'll be in the kitchen if you need anything."
"Thank you, Riley."
She squeezed his hand and then quietly left the room.
As Liam looked at the child sleeping before him, a whirlwind of emotions washed over him. Pride, love, regret, sadness, all vied for a place in his heart. But most of all, he felt an overwhelming sense of protectiveness and responsibility. This boy, his son, was a gift. Liam would do everything in his power to make sure he was safe and loved.
Liam leaned over and placed a gentle kiss on the boy's forehead.
"I love you, William," he whispered. "I will always be there for you."
With tears streaming down his cheeks, Liam made a silent vow:
No matter what, he would do right by his son.

Week 64 flashfic prompt
This is my first fic here! I saw the prompt from @choicesflashfics and got inspired, so I hope it's ok to participate. I believe I followed all the rules but lmk if I forgot anything!
Title: And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going
Book: The Cursed Heart
Words: ~1500
Pairing: Prince Kieran x genderneutral MC/reader (second person, no y/n)
Warnings: 1 mild curse, angst, hurt/comfort. takes place early in book 2 but no major spoilers
Prompt 1: "I'm here with you. I'm right where I belong."
*~*~*
"Beloved...you should return to your village."
"What?" You bolt upright. Kieran is gazing at you with a strange absence of emotion as you blink away the drowsiness that had begun to descend over you. There's something deadened in his shadowy eyes, twin pits of empty anguish, and for a horrible moment you're reminded of the heartless, cursed prince he once was. An ice-cold knife of fear slides painfully into your chest. "Now? But why? Has something happened?"
"Something has already happened," he says, voice heavy. "And I was powerless to stop it. The palace is no longer safe for you. This realm is not safe.”
"This realm was never “safe” for me. And the palace isn't safe for you either!" You pull yourself to sitting. He's sitting on the edge of your bed, already fully dressed, a sword in a shiny black leather scabbard at his side, a new addition since last night. He's never carried a physical weapon since you've known him, but he must have decided to pick up the sword now. You shudder in apprehension. “Kieran, what are you saying?”
His expression doesn't change, and you know the look in his eyes: he's made his decision, accepted his fate, and will brook no argument. "Jack will keep coming after me until one of us is dead. But if you return home to your mortal life, you at least may escape his wrath. He has no reason to chase you if you’re no longer my consort. Whatever's to come...this need not be your fate."
You stare at him in horror. “I’m not leaving you.”
Kieran’s face is a carefully constructed mask devoid of emotion. “I’ve made my decision.”
“I won’t do it!”
“You will, beloved. If you love me, you will go without argument. Fight me, if you must, but you will not win. Either way, I am taking you home. Today.”
Your heart races, fear and grief and anger rising in one horrible wave. Would he truly do this? He’s right; you couldn’t win against him if he made up his mind to deliver you back to your village and leave you there. For your own good.
For a horrifying moment, you see your future: withering away the short years of your life, back where you started from, and away from everyone and everything left that you love. Never to return to the Fae realm.
Banished.
Tears well in your eyes and you swallow them down.
"You're giving up," you accuse, eyes narrowed.
"Never." Kieran's eyes blaze in response, his power flaring in a way that chills you. "You, of anyone, should know that I would sooner tear my heart from my chest than send you away. But if it may save you, beloved, I will do anything. I would rather lose you to the mortal realm, where you may at least live out a full and peaceful life, than have you die in my arms because I could not protect you.”
Kieran's voice shakes, and you realize suddenly he has already pictured this. Whether from old age or Jack's blade...this is his greatest fear. This man who was betrayed by a lover, lost his father as a child and witnessed his mother torn to shreds before his eyes cannot bear to witness the death of the last person left that he loves.
He knows you will die before him. He's always known. But he thought you had more time. And he doesn't believe himself strong enough to witness it happen so soon, not like this.
“I can’t,” you whisper. "I'm not leaving you. How could you ask that?" A shiver of fear runs through you. "If I return home without you...Kieran, there's no knowing how many years of my life I'll spend wasting away, waiting for you. Even if you defeat Jack, that's precious time we'll never get back.”
You expect anger at this defiance to your prince's orders. You don't expect what happens instead.
The cold stoic expression breaks, allowing you to glimpse the rare welling of anguish in his eyes, and you realize he understands exactly what he's asking. He knows that if you leave the mortal realm, you will begin to age faster. Years will pass for you and mere moments for him every second you're apart.
He knows this. He's willing to sacrifice life with you so that you may have a chance to live.
Whether you stay or go, he will lose you.
His large, powerful hands grip yours hard, engulfing them in bony strength. "Please, my love. I beg of you...I'm not strong enough to keep you safe. I won't allow my pride to be your downfall. You must go home. Now."
"I am home," you answer fiercely, clutching him back. "You can't truly think I would ever leave you.”
He scowls as his anguish turns to anger.  "You will if I order it. Do not argue with me. Not now. Please.”
You're half furious, half terrified. Kieran's anger stems from fear; you know this. You are the only one who could ever talk Kieran down when he's made up his mind, but…this may be beyond even you. “How can you ask me to leave you now?” You whisper brokenly. “How can I leave my heart behind?”
Kieran swallows. His hands shake, then he sets his jaw with determined stubbornness. “If you love me at all, spare me the knowledge that you died because of my own weakness. I can't live knowing I failed you."
Tears fall from your eyes freely now, hot tracks down your cheeks. It feels wrong, so very wrong, to even consider leaving him. You make your decision. “No, Kieran. Even if you take me back to the village, I'll only return to you.”
Kieran glares at you and the power in him channels in full force, waves of freezing cold anger at your defiance. “I won’t allow it. I will spend my last breaths keeping you safe, if I must. Do you think I haven’t considered this from every angle? Do you think I would readily or easily admit I’m too weak to defend you from our enemies? I cannot protect you. We have no choice.”
“You told me the choice would always be mine,” you snap back. “If I am to die, then I will die with you, and we’ll return to the wind together. That is my wish. You are my fate. I don’t want a long peaceful life alone in my village! There is no life for me without you. "
Kieran’s breath escapes him in a shuddering exhale, and his emotionless facade shatters. He covers his face with his hands and doesn’t answer.
“Please, my love, please don't lose heart,” you urge, voice breaking. “I know it’s so hard to see the light. Your life has been a string of tragedies, and I understand why you can’t see any reason to hope. But I refuse to believe this is how our story ends. I won't allow it.”
You wrap him in your arms and feel how much he’s shaking trying to keep everything inside, and squeeze him for all you’re worth as if you could steady his doubts through sheer force of will.
“We beat the odds before,” you remind him, gentling your voice.
“I’m not willing to gamble with your life,” Kieran replies bitterly.
“My love," you cajole. "We’ll find a way through this. We’re stronger together. Believe in me, if you can’t see anything else to hold on to. Bet on us.”
You rub his back, slowly, mindful of his healing wounds. For a long moment there is silence.
“There’s that steadfast optimism in the face of impossible odds again,” Kieran finally mutters, defeated. "Are all mortals as stubborn as you?"
You muffle laughter into his shoulder, sensing the tide turning in your favor. “It’s worked for me so far. I believe I recall you saying something about winning you over with just such a trait.”
Kieran just looks at you for a long while. Multiple emotions pass across his face. Hope, despair, admiration, frustration, tenderness…love.
Then his eyes slide closed and he tilts your head to kiss you, tentative and fragile, and you know you have won. At least this time.
“Are you certain?” is all he asks. His voice is a whisper, his eyes still closed as he holds you, fingers stroking lightly over your hair.
“With all my heart,” you answer, holding him tight. "You aren't facing this alone. You'll never be alone again, Kieran. I'm here with you. I'm right where I belong."
You feel Kieran's change of heart as surely as if you still held a piece of it in your own chest; his iron will melts and his rigid body finally relaxes in your arms, taking the comfort you offer at long last. He buries his face in your shoulder and holds you as though he never plans to let go.
"Damn it," he mutters, then sighs, and you feel his power wrap around you like wings, protective and loving. "It took all my willpower to order you away. And somehow, you have outdone me, once again."
"Let's hope my powers of persuasion are just as powerful against Jack," you reply, and with a burst of relief, feel Kieran's breath of laughter against your hair.

This story is also the answer to a nonny ask: Has Riley ever faked the big “O”?

“You were simply wonderful this morning, love,” the King of Cordonia praised his Queen.
The couple were in the backseat of their chauffeured limousine, returning to the Palace after spending the morning at House Theron for a charity event sponsored by Duchess Joelle:
Gender is a Spectrum: A Union of Art, Fashion, and Inclusivity.
The program consisted of breakfast with the King and Queen, followed by an hour-long fashion show where models of all sexual orientations carried the Duchess’ latest art collection as they strutted and sashayed the runway in the latest haute couture from Ana De Luca, House Beaumont, and a rising up-and-comer from Duchy Domvallier whose works had been discovered on the app Fashion Parade.
For the fashion show, Liam had been the emcee and Riley, one of the models.
“I starved myself to be able to fit into those skinny, too-small outfits!” Riley complained as she dug in her purse for her cellphone.
“You were modeling the extended size collection,” Liam reminded her as he nuzzled her neck. “And did so beautifully.”
Riley’s head swung around, her blonde bob swinging synthetic hair across her cheek. “Extended sizing begins at SIZE 8, Liam! SIZE 8! NOTHING on my body wears a size 8!”
She sighed as she resumed her search. “I swear, this baby weight … maybe dieting is a good thing.”
Liam didn’t bother to point out their baby, Theodore, was now seven years old.
“You’re on a diet?” he asked in surprise.
“Not really.” With a cry of triumph, her hand emerged from the handbag with the phone. She turned her head once more, her eyes narrowed with distrust. “Are you saying I NEED one?”
Liam shook his head quickly. “No.”
The couple had a rare weekend free; their sons were at Applewood visiting with Regina and their Aunt Lena. Both had plans for their open weekend.
Neither had communicated their plans with the other.
Liam had plans for his wife that involved no clothes, no work phones, and lots of sex. He wasn’t chancing an argument.
“AND you had breakfast this morning, so not starving,” he quickly changed the subject.
“Do you know how long ago THAT was?” Riley demanded.
Liam did know. Riley had eaten breakfast aboard the royal family’s private rail coach at 8am. It was now 11:30am.
“You call TWO pancakes and ONE sausage patty breakfast?? THAT is NOT breakfast! A snack, at best.”
Riley’s plans involved eating food she wouldn’t have to cook or share, simping over Gong Yoo, and finding a new hiding place for her snack wagon and hamper.
Ever since Liam’s children had entered the picture, Riley had no food to herself any longer. From the moment of conception, his kids had been nothing but crumb snatchers stealing all her food. If they had been her children, they wouldn’t do her like that.
Riley often wondered how she ended up a single mother, and sole food source to kids that weren’t even hers.
Liam moved closer to his wife, his lips ghosting her jawline. His thumb grazed against her nipple, hidden beneath a red cotton camisole tunic and black sports bra. His lips curved as he felt it harden beneath his touch.
Riley slapped his hand away. “I’m trying to make a phone call!” she chided snappishly.
“To WHO?” Liam demanded as he rubbed the offended spot on the back of his hand.
“The kitchens! I need sustenance!”
“We’ll be home in a matter of minutes,” the King argued. “You can order from the rooms, and we can … pass the time until it’s delivered.” He raised an eyebrow suggestively as his palm rubbed her thigh.
Riley stared at her husband; her expression was neither agreeable nor amenable.
We’re hungry for two different things, she thought. I’m Team Chicken Kiev.
Her gaze went back to her phone, and she continued dialing. Liam rolled his eyes, annoyance flashing briefly in them.
He knew when Riley was hungry, she was impossible to deal with. He should simply wait until she satisfied her basic hunger before gratifying his baser ones. But Liam was in heat for his wife, which made him obstinate, impatient, determined.
We can have a quickie, and after she’s eaten … she’s all mine, all weekend.
The King pulled his wife close to him, her cheek nestled in the crook of his shoulder as she prattled off a litany of menu items to one the Palace’s chefs: Chicken Kiev (it could be fried or baked, as long as it was crispy); wild rice with mushrooms and gravy; string bean almondine; fried spicy sausages; fried potatoes; devil’s food cake slices; baklava; milkshakes.
Liam smirked down at her. “I have all the sausage you need, love.” He waggled his eyebrows.
Riley’s eyes peered up at him. “Yours isn’t spicy or fried. Just bland and boiled.”
Once safely inside their personal quarters, the parents video chatted with their children, oohing over the excited chatter about attending a magic show the night before, and playing soccer with the local youth in the still-healing orchards earlier in the morning.
They ahhed at the fact that after lunch, Aunt Lena was taking them to a street fair where there would jugglers, clowns, and cotton candy.
They bid their sons hasty farewells when the twins stated they wanted a dog, and their youngest began begging for a snake. A big snake, like the ones found in rainforests and jungles.
After the chat was over, Riley immediately called downstairs about her food.
Not ready yet. Soon.
She was leaned over, looking inside her nearly empty snack hamper and frowning at two packs of peanut butter and cheese crackers, when she felt Liam’s strong arms encircle her waist. His breath was warm and ticklish as his lips brushed over the raised hairs on the back of her neck.
Despite the rumblings coming from her stomach, Riley’s body responded instantly to Liam’s touch; she straightened up, pushing her back against his broad chest. She wriggled her ass against the crotch of his pants. She felt Liam’s lips curl against her skin, responding with a smile of her own.
And then her stomach loudly growled, and all thoughts of lust and lovemaking left her brain.
Where is my FOOD? How soon is soon? And now this man thinks I want the D.
The Queen exhaled a deep negro-spiritual sigh.
Let me handle this real quick.
Liam, of course, did not realize this. He thought her deep, put-upon sigh was a low moan caused by his roaming fingers and butterfly kisses. His wife’s eagerness in pulling off her clothes spurred him to disrobe in record time. The King did look strangely at his now nude wife as she hurried to their bed.
Riley preferred to saunter and tease him with her body.
“Come here, lover … touch my nakedness,” she purred as she crooked her index finger at Liam.
Riley was definitely never so bold, not when it was the two of them alone and intimate. This was when her vulnerability, her submissiveness to him freely revealed themselves.
But Liam’s need for her touch, her feel, her taste was almost overwhelming, and he began reasoning and justifying her unorthodox actions.
She’s in need more than me!
“I would deny you nothing,” Liam muttered in a husky whisper, his naked body joining hers on the bed.
He positioned himself so her breasts dangled enticingly above his mouth; his lips wrapped tightly around an elongated nipple, and he began to suckle gently. His hand curled around his very erect shaft, lightly stroking himself from head to base. He whimpered softly at the feel of his wife’s fingers in his hair.
“OW!” he yelled as she pulled his hair, hard. “What the HELL, Riley?”
“I want you inside me. Deep inside me,” Riley explained as she settled spread-eagled on the bedcovers. “Come ON,” she whined as she surreptitiously glanced at the clock.
It’s GOT to be soon now!
There was a scowl on Liam’s face as he stared moodily at his wife. His scalp tingled where she had yanked his hair. He wanted nipples on his tongue. But Riley wanted him inside of her.
I did say a quickie first ...
The King pulled himself up on his knees, his gaze trained on his wife’s sex. He plunged two fingers inside her entrance; they flexed and curled against her walls as arousal dampened his skin. The Queen’s hips arched against his hand; slowly, Liam removed his digits, placing them in his mouth before licking them clean. He pinned her wrists above her head as he sank into her.
Immediately, Riley’s neck arched as her hips bucked against his; moans, obviously forced, were uttered along with encouragements such as, “Fuck me harder, baby. Give me your dick!”
Liam stopped his thrusting; if one were counting, he had only gotten in three. His hands released her wrists, and Riley immediately began flailing her arms about. His wife looked like a one-person show consisting of really bad porn, crooked wig included.
Liam slowly pulled out of her tightness; Riley was still gyrating her hips, throwing in a back arch for good measure before her grand finale.
His eyes alternated between widening and thinning as Riley continued her histrionics, oblivious to the fact that Liam was no longer participating.
“Oh baby … oh baby … I’m cumming. I’m cumming, Liam,” she gasped, not a drop of sweat anywhere on her body. No trembles, no panting of breath. Nothing to indicate she had exchanged pleasure with the man she claimed to love.
Because she hadn’t.
“RILEY!” Liam bellowed.
Her eyes flew open, and she grinned up at him. “Was it good for you, too? Yeah? Okie doke, lemme up!”
Liam’s palms were pressed into the sheet-covered mattress, one arm on either side of his wife. “Did you just FAKE an orgasm with me?” he demanded angrily, his complexion reddening with frustration and disbelief.
Chimes rang throughout the suite, indicating that someone had entered the quarters.
“All’s fair in love and hunger!” Riley exclaimed as she pushed Liam off her, leaving her wig behind on her pillow.
“I can’t believe you would even think to leave me like this!” Liam hollered in annoyance, his index finger pointing to his half-erect penis.
His wife didn’t even look his way. In less than 10 seconds, she had tossed her nightgown over her head, grabbed a robe, left Liam alone in the room and was greeting wait staff.
She kissed the startled employee full on the lips as her eyes took in all the food.
After two pieces of Chicken Kiev, two whole sausages, a huge portion of fried potatoes, and some green beans, Riley felt common sense return to her body. Her eyes rolled in ecstasy as she devoured a slice of the chocolate cake; it fully restored her senses and sensibilities. Completely satisfied, she hummed softly to herself as she stored the leftovers in the refrigerator.
Now she was ready to perform her wifely duties.
Happy wife, happy life.
The Queen entered the bedroom, her eyes taking in her still-naked King; Liam’s hands were interlocked behind his head, which rested on two king-sized pillows covered in silk casing. His body stretched the length of the bed, one ankle crossed over the other. He was watching an international news channel.
He did not look at his wife.
Riley bit her lip before standing in front of the television screen. She gave Liam a sultry look before enticingly sliding the robe off her body.
Liam picked up the remote and turned the electronic device off.
Undeterred, Riley slowly licked her lips as she skimmed her palms over her curves. Her fingers tugged at a black lace strap, rolling it off her shoulder.
Liam turned onto his side, away from Riley; he pressed his palms together, resting his hands on the pillows; his cheek lay on the back of his hands.
“ARE YOU SERIOUS RIGHT NOW?” Riley shrieked as she threw her robe at him.
Her husband lifted his head, his eyes mere slits as he glared at his wife. “I AM AS SERIOUS AS YOU WERE PERFORMING YOUR … “
He sat up, throwing his arms in the air. “I don’t even have WORDS for what the hell you did!”
“I WAS HUNGRY!” Riley stamped her foot against the carpet.
“You lied to me and made a mockery of the most sacred act of our marriage. I have nothing further to say to you,” Liam replied coolly as he laid back down in the bed.
Riley continued to stand, a stupefied look on her face. “I’m ready now,” she whined.
Liam exhaled a loud breath. “I am neither hungry nor horny.”
“I cannot believe you are making a huge deal about me delaying sex,” Riley huffed as she continued to undress.
“This isn’t about the SEX! It’s about you thinking you can get away with faking an orgasm with me! And in such an obvious way, as if you think I’m stupid! You were extremely selfish, Riley and you attempted to play on my intelligence!”
“You KNOW how I get, Liam! You KNOW!”
“Apparently, I don’t.”
Riley pushed her lips to the side as she considered how to make this right without admitting she was wrong. Naked, she climbed into the bed, pressing her ample breasts against Liam’s muscular back.
“Show me on the doll where I hurt you,” she whispered against his tawny-complexioned skin.
Liam attempted to shrug her off, but Riley clung to him like a burr.
“Is it here?” she kissed his shoulder blade.
No response.
“Here?” Her lips brushed the nape of his neck.
Despite his best efforts, Liam felt his cock stir as his erection began to grow.
“STOP THAT, Riley!” His hand harmlessly swatted air.
Riley’s hand reached around to encircle his shaft; she smirked in satisfaction. “Ahhhh, here it is. Let me kiss it better, love.”
Liam frowned as he debated his options: Continue to refuse his wife or receive oral gratification. His pleasure derived from hers; he had never needed her mouth on his sex, but he did want it. He did enjoy it.
Immensely.
She owed him an apology.
He rolled onto his back, his eyes closing in pleasure when he felt her other warm wetness wrapped around his cock.
The couple spent the remainder of the afternoon in bed, lost in each other.
Riley didn’t fake anything this time around.
Liam made sure of it.
