ofmd winning the idgaf war with historical accuracy once again since they included zheng yi sao in the show even though she lived like almost a century later than blackbeard and all the other guys. she was infinitely cooler than any of the other pirates anyway 🙏

Pirate Trivia Time:
Here are some of my favourite bits of pirate trivia:
Ann Bonny's name has been spelled "Anne" with an e for 300 years due to a error in the trial record.
The sole surviving physical description of Ann Bonny and Mary Read by an eyewitness is basically "I knew they were women because they had big breasts".
Blackbeard once ransomed the city of Charleston for syphilis medication.
There is no known record of Blackbeard killing anyone before his final battle.
The word "buccaneer" has the same origins as the word "barbecue" (the boucan, a means of preparing meat).
A buccaneer, William Dampier, introduced the word "avocado" (among others) to the English language (he was also the first person to circumnavigate the world three times).
Wrecks of at least two pirate ships have been discovered: "Black Sam" Bellamy's Whydah Galley, and Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge.
Arguably the most successful pirate of all time was a Chinese woman, Ching Shih, aka Zheng Yi Sao.
Bartholomew Roberts had perhaps the most cinematic pirate death- trading broadsides with a man of war in the middle of a tropical storm.
Yes, Stede Bonnet actually had a library on his sloop, the Revenge.

Want to learn more about Zheng Yi Sao and how she conquered China?
Puppet History already has an episode about the pirate queen, just under the name she was also known as; Ching Shih.

i just wanna share this.
i want a period piece show about female pirates. like, that tells the stories of them. not just Anne Bonney, Mary Read, & Ching Shih. i want them and also Joanna of Flanders, Duchess of Brittany (c. 1295 – September 1374) & Jeanne de Clisson, the Lioness of Brittany (1300 – 1359). i want Gráinne O'Malley/Grace O'Malley/Gráinne Ní Mháille (c. 1530 – c. 1603), Sayyida al Hurra (1485 – July 14th, 1561), and the women of the Killigrew family. i want the possibly fictional, possibly real pirate women of Charlotte de Berry (17th century) & Jacquotte Delahaye (fl. 1656). i want the real but stories are mostly probably fictional Anne Dieu-le-Veut (August 28th, 1661 – January 11th, 1710). i want something that shows us the pirate women from outside Europe & the Caribbean, i want the Canadian pirate woman, Maria Lindsey, and the American pirate woman, Rachel Wall.

Zheng Yi Sao | Ching Shih
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Got raven hair, it's dark as night
Icy eyes, outta sight, outta sight
Her heart, in spite, is warm and bright
Her smile awakes the Northern Light
She, queen of the kings, runnin' so fast, beatin' the wind
Nothin' in this world can stop the spread of her wings
She, queen of the kings, broken her cage, threw out the keys
She will be the warrior of the North and Southern Seas
-Alessandra, Queen of the Kings
Some- those who survived Blackbeard’s hell ship- thought they would be forced to their knees if they weren’t chucked off the ship to begin with. Knives and axes slipped into hands that still bore the scars of far too many raids or months stuck in a trunk in the lowest hold. Even Izzy Hands himself swallowed dry as the ship approached.
Then the Queen herself comes across the rope bridge between their two ships and her expression is clear of smeared kohl, tears, or fire. She has a sword, yes, but a posture that speaks to a confidence that seems natural, not arrogant. She seems impressive, but, at least from a glance, doesn’t seem to be too dangerous.
But there’s that lingering fear, that level of threat that those who killed Blackbeard cannot forget. It digs into their brains, seeding itself in the fertile soil of well-honed paranoia.
Zheng Yi Sao is the fucking Pirate Queen. She is a goddess among pirates, the greatest pirate captain in the world. Compared to her, Blackbeard was an ant, and yet he was their god for so long, able to destroy and ruin them all so thoroughly that they're all still trying to sort things out, months later.
But Zheng Yi Sao has a smile that is bright, almost warm, if rather quick.
-aletterinthenameofsanity, swear this time around I'm gonna stay (love me if you choose to)
I absolutely love the depiction of Zheng Yi Sao/Ching Shih in this series so much! She's a fantastic ruler established to have the sort of confidence and power you'd need to take over China and the Caribbean sea, but is allowed to be sassy and romantic and drop dead funny at the same time WITHOUT losing her fleet (my number one complaint with her storyline in the show- why bring in the most badass and most powerful pirate to ever exist and then strip her of all of her power). Her romantic dynamic with Frenchie is fun and hot and a well-developed relationship of equals.

Day 19: Zheng Yi Sao, aka Ching Shih!
Zheng Yi Sao (”Zheng Yi’s wife” or “Mrs. Zheng”) was born Shi Yang. She was likely a brothel worker in Guangdong when she caught the eye of Zheng Yi, a local pirate, mercenary, and general warlord. They married in 1801, and it quickly became apparent that she had a talent for the business.
The Zhengs consolidated the local pirate gangs into a single confederation, boasting six fleets and over ten thousand men. When Zheng Yi drowned in 1807, his wife took over command.  When the local authorities - with a fleet of a hundred ships - attempted to crack down on piracy, Zheng Yi Sao sunk a quarter of their fleet, and soon was raiding the countryside with impunity. She kept the confederation tightly organized, with strict rules of conduct.
In 1809, Qing officials took the desperate step of allying with the Portuguese to put an end to the pirate fleet. They blockaded Zheng Yi Sao in Tung Chung Bay for nearly a month - but when the winds changed, the pirates broke free without the loss of a ship.  This put Zheng Yi Sao in a position of strength - and, unlike many in her position, she quit while she was ahead. As the coalition against her grew to three nations, she surrendered to local authorities in exchange for complete pardons for her men, a military position for her new husband, and quite a bit of money for herself. Where most famous pirates died at the end of a rope, Zheng Yi Sao passed peacefully in 1844 as the wealthy proprietress of a casino.

Okay, but when I saw that Susan was actually Zheng Yi Sao, the most underrated and undervalued pirate (at least in terms of media adaptions), I screamed.
So stoked to dive into her in a video
