the final chapter of chihayafuru makes no sense from a narrative perspective. you don't spend the vast majority of the story where chihaya canonically have feelings for arata and then have her choose taichi out of nowhere (the same guy she rejected). we don't see her feelings for arata change, it would be one thing if her feelings were ambigious to both guys but it was always toward arata. and we also don't see when her feelings for taichi develops. even if you ship chihaya-taichi, there's no way you could be satisfied with this ending since we never saw the development actually happen.
not to mention, we purposely didn't get chihaya to respond to arata's confession but we know based on her reaction (her blushing at the mere mention of arata and her eyes literally sparkling) that she has feelings for him but her focus was on becoming queen and not feeling like an equal towards arata. even in the final arc, there are several moments of her blushing and being shy around arata. this wouldn't make sense if she didn't have feelings for him and her feelings can't suddenly change within the match. and yet, chihaya never even give arata an answer after all this time. he confessed at chapter 119 and the manga ended at chapter 247. arata just randomly finds out that her and taichi are together and she doesn't even have the decency to say anything. this is objectively bad writing and makes no sense knowing the author hasn't made mistakes like this in the manga but suddenly does it in the manga.
it's clear this ending doesn't make sense with the story that was built up over the past decade when it was clearly aiming at chihaya-arata and its safe to say that the author (who's known for deleting and being apologetic whenever she posts about arata) did it out of fear and backlash. the lack of chihaya-arata interactions makes sense because why else would two close friends who shared their dream and finally reached it together act like they're not close? a mere high five when chihaya always hugs her friends.
end of the day, chihaya said she'll always love karuta and love arata and that was never disproven by the author. won't be surprised if one day it comes out or hinted that she doesn't like the ending to her manga

Me reading the extra chapter of Chihayafuru
warnings. Lots of negativity and complaining.
The author gatekeeping taichihaya till the end
Tumblr media
Crumbs for you guys.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The way I laughed when I saw this. I'm too used to reading gay subtext. Because it definitely looked like a new couple had formed. A totally unpredictable one.
Tumblr media
You know what? I'm going to agree with Arata's haters. He is boring. What I used to like about him is that he could be cold and let his negative emotions influence him but the author forgot that part of him and so in the end he just ended up being too nice and composed. And that's boring.
Even so, it's cute that he knows how to iron.
Tumblr media
Crumbs. That's my favorite character right there. Yep the one that never actually did anything for my ship.
The chapter is more entertaining if you remove the context from this panel so it looks like Sumire is like "it's hard to get over Mashima-sempai but when I see you I have faith that things will get better" and Arata responds:
Tumblr media
That would've been so sad and creepy of him lol
Tumblr media
I love his lack of initiative in giving me something, anything that makes him look like someone who was rejected. Go dude give us nothing!
In the end it wasn't clear to me if Sumire and Arata are a thing. I guess if you want to read between the lines it could be a headcanon. A headcanon that no one asked for.
that's all. finally over. Thank God

My thoughts on Chihayafuru's endgame
so first i wanna give some context bc i thinks is important to know that i started the anime *checks clock* yesterday so yeah i guess you could say i got invested, and well yeah i havent read the manga but after many disappointments with love triangles in anime i felt the need to check how the manga ends, just to confirm how i never get what i want lol. Yes im privy to most of the development that happens in the manga but i love giving my opinion on stuff i have no idea by just making it up and guessing. That said lets begin with my thoughts
Yes i was mainly a Chihaya / Arata shipper and after finding out who she ends up with- i get it and it makes absolute sense
Since the beginning i made up with the idea that this probably would not go the way i wanted to bc i know my luck and how anime works, and to be fair i knew that no matter how it ended as long as the three of them were still friends i would be happy. am i sad? yes, but Taichi is a great guy you just cant hate him bc he doesnt shy away from showing how much he cares, its just that... man im a sucker for characters like Arata and their whole narrative
In my mind Chihaya and Arata are soulmates, they were meant to find eachother, change eachother's lives for the better, just not in a romantic way, they clearly had feelings for eachother with their whole blushes and sparkle eyes, but i see it more like a puppy love very intense first love, not exactly like something that lasts all your like u kno? that said i just love how they complement and admire eachother, hes the one that thaught her the thing she loves the most.
On the other side Taichi and Chihaya's dynamic is the perfect base for a relationship, they are the most comfortable with eachother than with anyone else and well the whole best friends to lovers trope wich is not my fave lol
like i said i havet read the manga so i dont know what happens but i would love a bit more development in Arata/Chihaya's dynamic after the confession, maybe them becoming closer with the purpose of being something more than friends and then being all like "ah, this doesn't feel right" just to realize what they felt wasnt actually love but with a now stronger friendship, and then eventually develop her feelings for Taichi, or at least getting some kind of closure for Arata and Chihaya's feelings, but from what ive heard im not too close ??
anyways my boy Arata was done dirty as well as the shippers (u cant change my mind that there was purposefully a lot of effort in making us believe something was gonna happen, just evil, but ive seen worse so..) but i get why Chihaya/Taichi ended up together

Do you like Chihayafuru? I'm on S3 and omggggg I love it sm 😭 rooting for Chihaya x Taichi all the way! But I love else everyone too 💓
ahhh yes, i'm a huge chihayafuru fan! along with fruits basket it is probably my favorite manga ever :')) the anime is wonderful and i hope you'll continue reading after finishing it, as the story gets sooooo good. my favorite characters are arata, taichi, and suo! my favorite ships are suo/taichi, chihaya/arata, and arata/taichi, although i'm a big multishipper and get hyperfixated on different ships depending on my mood haha.
btw i do have several chihaya/taichi fics if you're wanting to read any! i'd recommend this one and this one as they don't contain any manga spoilers :)

my feelings on chihayafuru shipping (manga spoilers ofc)
i was pulling hard for chihaya x taichi basically from the midpoint of the manga, not sure i'm 100% happy with how it happened in the end but happy enough
chihaya absolutely should've rejected arata unambiguously instead of telling him she needed more time though
very bothered the manga didn't make kana x komano totally clear since it was destiny and should've been
shinobu's best match would've been chihaya... except that chihaya is incurably straight (and loves taichi, ofc). i think of shinobu as more likely into girls, but she likes flirting with guys in the manga as part of her desire for attention
arata's best match is yuu, but arata x hanano could've worked with a bit more setup, their interactions at the end of the manga were really good
sudo would only ever date someone older than him (sadly for his fanclub)
suou wins the "most likely to be single forever" award, i see him with nobody

Oh how easy for me it became to see them like this ❤ in my imagination, in the back of their canon scenes, between the lines of their words about each other, everywhere ( *´艸`) By amazing artist: @ZSODZ5nSk7 on X ❤

I spy taichi x arata ksksdhskdh PLEASE
(hi circ 💜)
Gisa hi!!! So the title of “taichi x arata” is fairly self-explanatory 😆
- - - - -
A boy with glasses, his hand stopped above a karuta card.
Taichi — nice.
Maybe that was when it happened, even if he called it something else — rivalry, an obstacle, frustration.
~
“I love you, Taichi!”
The bloom in his chest. He doesn’t dare look at Arata’s face.
“But… I feel the same way about Arata.”
Taichi pulls up short. So what is she saying?
It’s Arata who says it first, figures it out first. “You want us both?”
The depths of Chihaya’s greed truly take Taichi’s breath away. “That’s not possible,” he says flatly.
It’s Arata who says, “Why not?”
Taichi’s speechless. Don’t they know anything? “Because that’s not how it works!”
Taichi knows how it works, has had it drilled into him since forever. How it works is a boy and a girl fall in love, get married, live happily ever after. How it works is you work hard, go to good schools, work at a good job, retire. You don’t share a girl with another guy.
(And you definitely don’t fall in love with another guy.)

Going through my notes I found the link of my compilation of Arata and Chihaya scenes to edit and I remembered how beautiful animated they are and it's a shame that no one uses them. So I'm going to leave them here even if this tag is almost dead.
Tumblr media
Chiharata compilation
I probably won't edit them anymore because I really don't like how things turned out. And I'm not talking about Taichi and Chihaya being endgame, but rather the fact that the author didn't do it well and tried to gaslight me by telling that it was obvious from the beginning. My intelligence hasn't been insulted like this since I fell for queerbaiting.
anyway please tag me if you use them because I would love to see an amv of those two to remember old times.

I don't know if you noticed but chihaya and arata shippers really hate taichi I thought they were different from taichi x chihaya shippers but they have done nothing but shit on him since now he is in the way and the one who ruined their story
i think the practice from shippers across the board whether it's one side or the other is to make a sort of microcosm of one boy and his relationship to chihaya while ignoring or devaluing the other and it's very jarring unfortunately bc i really don't think the story is meant to be read that way at all.. both relationships are very special and both boys are very special it's really sad seeing either of their arcs or relationships be condemned

Chihayafuru ending...
Warning: this post may contain spoiler. Erm, you may say that I, a Arata x Chihaya shipper, am in a whiny mood. You may be right. Well, I just write what I want to write (this Tumblr account is mine, so it’s not like I have to please everyone). Anyway, I just want to validate my feelings for my OTP throughout all these years.
To start with, I discovered Chihayafuru in 2016 and well, when I read the manga for the first time, I shipped Arata and Chihaya right away. I mean their meeting is like a destiny huh. Chihaya was greatly inspired by Arata and since then, she set a new goal in her life (that she spent years to practice karuta to achieve that goal). And Chihaya also motivated Arata to play karuta again. Yeah, ik ik it can be interpreted as idolization and admiration, but their bonding is so special right. When I listened to Akanezora (anime SS1 ending song), I immediately think of them. However, when it comes to karuta, I feel that Chihaya and Arata’s connection is much stronger.
I am freaking sad but I think Suetsugu-sensei have considered everything carefully to make up her mind. Actually, I want to say more about Arata and Chihaya, but my writing skills...ahem...not that gud. The journey has come to the end, this is still one of the best manga I have ever read.

...The way Suetsugu writes romance though. Not sappy. Not a generic exchange of I love you’s, no. Suetsugu integrates the overarching theme in the romance and no, it is not an easy task, in pain of sounding boring. It isn’t. She’s consistent. It’s compelling. It satisfies but at the same time leaves the reader wanting more for the ship. Leaves the reader falling more in love with the ship, in love with and invested in their individual growth, in love with Hyakunin Isshu and karuta all the same.
