TGCF Book 3 Reaction pt. 6 - We are going to Mt. Tonglu!

hahaha. So, funny thing. I got impatient and just breezed though the last two books and consumed all of the post-canon content I could find. But, even though I have finished TGCF, that doesn’t mean I didn’t leave notes that I want in big chunks like this. So I will continue working on this

Even though I read the novel, I will stay true to my notes to the best of my abilities.

Ch 138: Xie Lian remembering that he threw his meatballs like bullets without any spiritual strength, like how he went about the past 800 years

- Me: Why do people not realize that Xie Lian is buff. Buff Xie Lian art, where?

Qi Rong turns out to be a better chef than Xie Lian. Like possible House Husband material

- Me: Yo. WTF. I call hack! How did- *remembering Qi Rong’s backstory*... Okay, but how did he learn and hone his skills?

Heaven’s Eye cultivator group about to chow down on some hair when Xie Lian steps in with the pebble toss

Ch 139: Hua Cheng builds a little golden palace outside and then kicks it. The shady inn illusion crashes as well.

- Me: Man, I really hope that the Heavenly Emperor doesn’t die and make Heaven crash onto the ground, only to be upheld by the power of Xie Lian and then create a parallel of that scene in book 2, or Atlus holding up the world.

Ch 143: Heaven and the Ghost Kings have a mutual beneficial relationship

Hua Cheng using this fact to exploit Heaven singing him praises for a year.

Mt. Tonglu has the Klin and both places is that one poisonous jar where the last poisonous creature that is alive after x amount of time is emerged as the victor.

Ch 14-Mt. Tonglu gate

Some ghost ladies get hurt and the cloaked stranger immediately asks: “Are my ladies alright?”

Pei Ming about to tease Hua Cheng when Ruoye whips out to hit Pei Ming

- Me: I don’t know if that was all Ruoye or influence from Mt. Tonglue, but go Ruoye.

Pei Ming’s mysterious candy he got to disguise his spiritual powers is revealed to be shady candy made form Ghost City. Consuming the candy is the equivalent to rubbing skunk spray all over yourself.

Xie Lian pulls a trick on Swift Life-Extinguishing Blade/Ming’Guang and Pei Ming saw it work. The trick was actually the most vile swear word of the Banyue kingdom that is the most disrespectful insult ever.

- Me: What did the army teach you Xie Lian?

Xie Lian calls out for Banyue & Pei Su knowing that they are not at Mt. Tonglu as a tactic to distract Ke Mo

- Me: lol. What if they actually come after Xie Lian called them.

When things start to look good, Xie Lian calls out on it. It is immediately changes into a bad thing

Tiny E-Ming grows with praises from Xie Lian.

Pei Ming does a big brain and smashes E-Ming’s hit to Xie Lian’s lips. E-Ming grows to a very long scimar

- Me: Pei Ming caught on what Xie Lian didn’t. Also E-Ming reflect’s Hua Cheng, so, affection makes E-Ming grow. Hua Cheng

As Ke Mo and Ming’Guang are abotu to beat Xie Lian and Pei Ming, Banyu and Pei Su do that badass entry of jumping down a cliff and kicking the opponents.

- Me: lol, Banyue and Pei Su actually appeared.

Banyue throws a scorpion-snake at Ke Mo fully knowing what she is doing and the 200 years of mutual dislike is behind it.

- Me: Ultimate betrayal.

Banyue: We came here with Rain Master

- Me: Wait. Rain Master is here?

Ch 148: Xie Lian thinks that if he does the same things he did to E-Ming to help him grow, it will help Hua Cheng grow

- Me: Awe. So cute.

Ke Mo vs. Banyue & Pei Su - Round 2: Banyue is too embarrassed to throw her snakes again at Ke Mo. Pei Su swoops in and yeets a basket full at Ke Mo who screams at them

- Me: For some reason I find this scene really funny.\

Xie Lian: Moves into kiss Hua Cheng. He kisses the forehead and is sad about it.

Pei Ming learns that Banyue is that Banyue while she backs away from Banyue as Pei Ming comes close to her

- Me: Oh wait. Does Pei Ming still smell of those Ghost Candies?

It is revealed that Banyue is weary of Pei Ming because of the candy scent

- Me: Lol, it was the candy

Rain Master is brought up

- Me: *random thought* Does Rain Master & Pei Ming have some history together?

Rain Master is at Mt. Tonglu because Qi Rong stole some of her farmers.

Pei Ming is revealed to be the opposing General of the Rain Master

- Me: Oh, they do have some history together.

Xie Lian & Readers learn about the ‘Tale of the General Who Snapped His Sword’

Ch 149: Pei Ming insults Banyue for not knowing how to cook like other females

- Me: General Pei, I understand that in your time that might have been a norm. But modern times that is different.

Xie Lian says he will teach Banyue how to cook

- Me: Oh no. Someone please stop them.

Banyue is holding a pot of food

- Me: Oh shoit. Did Banyue?

Ch 150: Banyue’s chicken meal is a black mass of questionable origins

- Me: *sob* it’s over. Banyue is now added to the list. But at least she took up her cooking skills after her adopted dad.

Pei Su takes the dubious food and eats it after watching Hua Cheng try some.

literally nothing more embarrassing than falling on the same type of white man over and over again (with the exception of minho from shinee bless his heart)

tommy joe ratliff → he was the bass player for adam lambert during his glamnation era (think of songs like for your entertainment and if i had you) idk why exactly i liked him so much but i just did.... however i searched him up again quite recently and found out he’s one of those republicans that says the dumbest shit on twitter so Big Yikes

harry styles → “baby you light up my world like nobody else, the way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed, and when you smile at the ground it ain’t hard to tell...” and BOOM 13-year-old me was sold for well over two years

louis tomlinson → basically i liked harry most until around 2013 when for some reason i started to like him a little less, and i got more focused on louis tomlinson, and although i didn’t like one direction anymore louis tomlinson always had a special place in my heart

ashton irwin → so ashton is 5sos’ drummer, i discovered 5sos through one direction & i stanned them until late 2014

harries twins → the harries twins (jack & finn) are basically the reason i started spending a lot of time on youtube, they were funny and pretty and they just had good videos in general, so for almost two years i’d watch their content regularly

choi minho → my first steps into kpop happened bc i was watching videos on youtube (most probably the harries twins) and suddenly i saw the sherlock mv in my recommended videos so i clicked on it and then 14-year-old me proceeded to fall for minho like an idiot

brooks twins → still youtubers, the brooks twins were 3/5 of the janoskians (jai & luke brooks, beau brooks, daniel sahyounie, & james yammouni), an australian youtube comedy group that was active from 2011-2018 though i was only around from 2012-2014 (when jai brooks was dating ariana grande)

jc caylen → surprise! another youtuber! jc caylen was part of o2l (our2ndlife) a youtube collaboration channel on which each of the 6 members posted videos on a certain day in the week (mondays with connor, tuesdays with ricky, wednesdays with sam, thursdays with jc, fridays with trevi (my 2nd favorite member bc she participated on the x factor), saturdays with ricardo, and then they had surprise sundays every week) and i remember how much joy jc & the others always brought me with their silly videos

misha collins → up next, you might know him as the gay angel that was sent to superhell after confessing his love to the homophobic hunter on supernatural, it’s misha collins! basically misha was a huge source of comfort for me, and i even went around calling myself emmisha for almost two full years (cringe)

henrik holm → he played even bech naesheim in skam and my crush on him reached that level of ridiculousness where i actually tried my hand at learning norwegian (i can only remember how to introduce myself and some curse words i would make a great first impression on him)

MEN 2016 – 2021

min yoongi → okay so my baby steps into kpop happened through shinee’s sherlock, but i only got really invested when yoongi dropped agust d 1 because Holy Fuck y’know??

kim namjoon → oh man i remember thinking namjoon was cute and a very good leader and then BAM he dressed like THAT at the 2016 mma’s and i fell in love. hard

park seojoon → i started liking park seojoon whilst i was watching hwarang (you guessed it, i watched it bc of taehyung), although he wasn’t my favorite character by far, but he was very silly off camera & i liked that (i’m not that into him anymore tho </3)

kim seokjin → OH BOY LET ME TELL U i liked seokjin from the very beginning (i got to know bts in late 2014) and i always liked seeing him perform and be himself and god once i realized i had a crush on him it just hit me like a mf truck, and he’s still one of my favorite people to this day

jung hoseok → god fake love era hoseok really hits different.... also yes i know i have all of bts’ hyung line on my list BUT bts was a really big part of my life for almost 6 years soooo honestly they deserve it i still think they’re great guys

choi san → when ateez made their debut in 2018 i immediately fell in love with san, he was such an amazing dancer and he captivated me right from the very beginning, to this day he’s still my bias in ateez uwu

xiao zhan → AND THEN, OCTOBER OF 2019 HAPPENS AND I WATCH CQL AND... i fall in love with xiao zhan, something i’d never expected would happen bc when i watched cql for the first time i wasn’t as invested in the story, but i really really really liked xiao zhan and one thing led to another and now here i am as a xfx

wang yibo → the thing is, i’ve known yibo since eoeo except i didn’t know cql yibo was uniq yibo (bc i’d forgotten his name) and when i looked it up i can tell you my jaw dropped to the floor bc holy shit????? also he is very silly and i love him loads ok

lee minho → ah, the man who has been my skz bias since 2018, not only is minho my bias i also kin him (there’s a lot of aspects of myself that i see in minho and vice versa) and he’s very comforting to me

bang chan → honestly, it was only a matter of time before i’d fall for bang chan, i knew the moment i got into skz again that i’d start biasing him and, well, here i am, double biasing chan & minho

lily collins → maybe i don’t like clary in tmi all that much but i sure liked the way lily collins looked

alona tal → MY BISEXUAL AWAKENING, it’s only when i saw alona tal in spn that i realized, fuck i might be gay

park jihyo → i discovered twice (my 2nd jype group after day6) through the like ooh-ahh mv and red-haired jihyo really did something to my heart (i just rewatched it and god zombie bang chan is so mf cute)

kim jisoo → when bp made their square two comeback i was immediately smitten for red-haired jisoo in playing with fire, it’s also when i realized she was my bias out of the four members

shin ryujin → the reason that i have blue hair is partially bc of ryujin and her amazing intro in wannabe :D

xuan lu → her portrayal of jiang yanli was SO ON POINT and she’s just such a kindhearted wonderful person wow i want her hand in marriage

lee yoobin → god i’ve known dreamcatcher from back when they were still called minx and ever since i’ve always looked at dami that bit more than the rest, i was also able to see dreamcatcher live in october of 2019 and the whole experience was just so amazing !!

kili → fili and kili’s storyline tore my heart out, spit on it, and then laughed straight in my face, KILI WAS LITERALLY MY FAVORITE DWARF

howl → i only watched this movie for the first time in 2020 so i kinda fucked up the tl cause i watched cql in 2019 but shh, anyways howl with his blonde hair was good looking but howl with his black hair just hits differently. i want a howl

Hua Cheng attempts to 'take a nap' and Xie Lian decides to pamper him.

Hua Cheng doesn't usually sleep, but he does usually enjoy taking a nap. Especially if it involves using Xie Lian's lap as a pillow on slow afternoons, so quiet that they can almost hear each individual bird song and rustle of maple leaves outside their door.

Xie Lian's pretty darn sure he's faking it most of the time at this point. Even now he doesn’t miss that mischievous upward curve of his lips, the way he looks so satisfied that he’s gotten what he wanted once again. Xie Lian couldn't resist poking and pinching his cheeks lightly, prompting Hua Cheng to crack open an eye and immediately sulk at him.

"Gege, I was just about to fall asleep," he lies through his teeth, lips set in the small pout he knows Xie Lian is infinitely weak for. Xie Lian wills himself to remain vigilant for just a bit longer.

"Sorry, San Lang is just too cute and I couldn't resist," he says, feeling like he's really spent too much time with him now that he's learnt to smile and act as shamelessly as this. Hua Cheng furrows his brow, this time adopting the disposition of a hurt puppy.

"Gege," he protests, and Xie Lian fails to stop his endearment from exploding in his chest.

"Okay, okay, I'll stop," he says, instead moving his hands to gently comb his fingers through Hua Cheng's silky black hair. "You can go back to sleep, I'll stop disturbing you."

“But I’m not sleepy anymore,” Hua Cheng protests, sounding profoundly upset for someone who probably hasn’t felt genuinely sleepy for the past few centuries. The playful glint in his eye brightens just a little more. “Take some responsibility, Gege.”

“Hm? And what would you like me to do?” Xie Lian indulges, though almost immediately regretting it because he’s more than familiar with Hua Cheng’s embarrassing requests. Still, it is just the two of them on the entire mountain at present and Xie Lian’s feeling warm and fuzzy and just a tad bit braver than usual. It’s a good chance for him to pamper San Lang as any.

“I want Gege to kiss me.”

And there it is, the embarrassing request. Xie Lian figures he should be used to this after all the kisses they’ve shared, but he still feels his cheeks heating up.

“Wouldn’t that just wake you up even more?” Xie Lian inwardly congratulates himself for executing the skillful swerve without tripping over his words. “How about this? I’ll sing San Lang a lullaby.”

Hua Cheng’s gaze grows wondrous, which Xie Lian finds rather adorable especially when contrasted with the rest of his handsome, regal features. Xie Lian leans back slightly, using one hand to support his weight while the other continues combing through Hua Cheng’s hair. It takes him a moment to unearth the memory, one from so far back in time that it’s almost a miracle that he can still remember even bits and pieces of it.

“Just close your eyes and listen, alright?” he says, and Hua Cheng obeys without a word. Xie Lian takes a breath, and begins humming.

It’s a song from back when he was a child, so young that he still feared the dark and soiled his bedsheets. His mother used to sing it to soothe him whenever he went seeking her comfort at night, her lovely voice warm as her embrace. She’d sung it to him only once more when he was older, on a particular night when he’s so exhausted and dejected that all he could do was tremble in her arms while she held him.

Xie Lian has long forgotten the lyrics save for a handful of words. It's not a very good rendition of the lullaby, he has to admit. As much confidence as he has in his singing, mumbling words between hums couldn’t have been as lulling as he’d hoped for.

“It’s ‘until spring comes again, until the flowers bloom again’, wasn’t it?”

Xie Lian pauses to meet Hua Cheng’s gaze. “Is San Lang familiar with this song too?”

“It used to be really popular even among the people in the slums; the brats on the streets would often sing it.” Hua Cheng wrinkles his nose. “Though perhaps it’d be more accurate to say that they’d scream it at the top of their lungs.”

At his visible distaste, Xie Lian lets out a little laugh. “Would you like a different song, then?”

“No, I like it a lot when it’s sang by Gege,” Hua Cheng assures. “It’s amazing that you still remember something from so long ago.”

A flatterer as always. “You’re even more amazing for remembering the exact lyrics, San Lang.”

“Not all of them,” Hua Cheng claims, but Xie Lian knows he’s only being considerate. He doubts there’s anything Hua Cheng could forget once he’s heard them. “Why don’t we try recalling them together?”

There’s no real reason for Xie Lian to refuse, so he continues from where he’d last left off, this time with Hua Cheng filling the blanks for him.

They must be an odd sight; a Heavenly Official with a Supreme Ghost King on his lap, both singing a lullaby from an ancient kingdom in a run-down hut atop an uninhabited mountain. A song of yearning, a song of comfort. Of springs that will surely come after winter, of mornings that will surely chase off endless nights.

Snowflakes are falling Getting farther away I miss you

Xie Lian honestly doesn’t remember much about his mother anymore, the details of her now blurred from his memories. Her face, her voice, her warmth. Forgetting helped him hurt less, helped him long to see her less. One can’t ache for someone they forced themselves not to think about.

Yet right then, as their soft voices blended pleasantly together singing a lullaby Xie Lian has always closely associated with her, he recalls something very particular she’s told him a long time ago. They were nothing but empty assurances to him then, so unimaginable while they were still trapped within their circumstances. They were words uttered in desperation to reassure both her son and herself in a situation with no hope.

Xie Lian looks down when he feels Hua Cheng brush the back of his fingers over his cheek. There’s a familiar ache in his chest, a flutter like butterfly wings in his heart as he takes in the sight of him. He leans into his touch, a fond sigh escaping his lips.

Mother truly always knew best.
