.... ik that step describes ortega as not being a jealous man/woman and i tend to interpret them that way as well.... but i am thinking about ortega's weird feelings towards a step-romanced!daniel.... and maybe also just thinking about ortega and jealousy in general... ANYWAY this to say. thinking about chargesteelstep / chargeflystep / chargentstep and about how, at least with the chargentstep route, ortega is pretty much ready to agree to this bc it means they get to keep sidestep and they get to be close to sidestep.... but also in all three cases, this third (new) partner. is not someone with epilepsy. this is someone who, to varying degrees, sidestep is able to read the thoughts of. (and project thoughts to. and communicate telepathically with. and share the dreams of. etc.) and ortega will never have that, will never know what that is like, will never have that amount of intimacy with sidestep... and this is the particular brand of jealous ortega that i am considering right now. i hope the poly ships work out, i hope everyone is happy... but also this ? festering in ortega ? and sidestep CANT read them and they WONT talk about this because they CANT for fear of losing this, losing sidestep ? i wouldnt be mad if thats how it turns out either.

The Heist: a story in four parts.

DISCLAIMER: Everything below belongs to Malin Rydén and @kittlesandbugs​, whose Sidestep I have poached for this hellish little adventure. CONTEXT: A Christmas gift inspired by Riley’s good and less good decisions in Retribution. WHAT TO EXPECT: A LOT of spoilers for Retribution: if you haven’t finished the book, don’t go further. Other than that, a lovely Christmas dinner in Los Diablos, circa 2020. Four chapters, four point of views, all published.

Chapter 1: Ricardo.

December 24th, 2020 23:15 RICARDO

Don’t look at me like that. I know what I saw. I wish they all stopped kidding themselves. Nothing escapes me.

Now, climb up and follow me.

Under my grip the bike finally glides to a stop water-like and water-like too melts into the night-shadows. Jump down, helmet off, mods on. The crzzzrackle climbs up my spine, a graze of nails, a flicker of light. Down the cliffwall, the villa is quiet, lit and candled, a peaceful home on Christmas Eve.

Of course.

Of course, façades and masks. Nothing good enough to trick me. What’s the saying? Can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Guess I’m an old dog nowadays; but not old enough to let them get away with this.

Not this time. Not anymore.

“Are you sure, Ortega?”

My fist closes on mounting current. Wish for a drink wish for a smoke. Wish for a face to hit. A jaw to split. A mirror to break. I know the face, you know the face. Familiar. Same eyes, same nose, wider at the neck, harder at the mouth.

“Don’t look at me like that,” I throw, annoyed. “I know what I saw.”

Angie is good that way: she might doubt me, but she’s already clawing down the steep pathway, eyes trained on the house.

“How did you even see it?”

That’s not the right question; just a bit to the left. I activate the thermal sensors and follow.

“I rigged the surveillance cam in her neighborhood months ago.”

“You know where she lives?”

There we go: something there, on the rim of her voice, just close to spilling. Not jealousy, no. More than curiosity, yes. When our eyes meet, she looks away first.

I wish they both stopped kidding themselves. Nothing escapes me.

“She’s slumming it in an old factory of some kind. You didn’t know?”

“Interesting,” she dodges. “And they came for her there?”

My Chargentstep hc is just that if they ever all hang out to watch a movie and Connor gets sandwiched between Argent and Ricardo he's going to fall asleep so fast and Argent is going to be annoyingly trapped there like when a cat lays on your lap, only it's just Connor clinging to her, while Ricardo is like noooooooo don't wake the baby he clearly hasn't slept in years.

She looks ten years younger when she sleeps. 

Slack and soft, relaxed and rounded. No sharp nervous eyes. No swift acerbic tongue. Just gentle breaths, little twitches, a nonsense mumble as her face turns into your shoulder.

What happened to make her strike out on her own? A fresh life she's doing her best to carve out while she hides. You wish you knew why, other than the obvious reasons. You wish she'd let you help her more. Too proud, too stubborn. Idiot. 

You shift as slowly as you can into a more comfortable position for both of you before your legs go completely numb. Her grip tightens on your shirt and her face burrows deeper into the crook of your neck. You rest your chin on the top of her head, fresh buzz cut soft like a peach. 

It's okay. You can keep her safe. Out of the papers, under the radar, even if you want to shout how much you care for her from the rooftops. But You've always been good at keeping secrets. You'll keep this one too, safe and snug and tight to your chest.

"She looks ten years younger when she sleeps," Angie says, so softly you barely make out the words. 

Soft and slack, just like you remember. Scarred inside and out like you don't. Couldn't keep her safe like you wanted. You were wrong about so many things.  Can’t go back to the past and slap better sense into yourself. Time hasn’t been kind to any of you.

Angie runs her fingers through Riley's hair, eliciting a quiet mumble from her as she turns and burrows her face into Angie's hip. Her lips quirk in a little smile as her eyes meet yours, easy to miss in the TV strobe reflecting across her skin. 

A second chance given that you won't let slip through your fingers. Maybe between the two of you, you can keep your quiet promises this time. You'll need the help, keeping her safe from herself as much as what's after her. 

"Yeah," you say just as quietly, looking down at your hands resting on Riley's legs, sprawled across your lap. "She always did."

You walk outside, to look down from the Balcony… Argent and Ortega are inside. You just had lunch together. You’re not sure how it happened… maybe something they said, or just sharing food together… It made all the disjointed pieces, just suddenly fit together. They fit. You fit. You’re all together and the realization was too much. You had to go outside, catch some air.

But the sensation didn’t die there… It’s going strong, making your whole body tingle. It’s a very physical feeling centered in your chest. Something keeps vibrating there, humming at its own beat and you feel it pulling you up. Walking on clouds… as if a breeze could take you away.

You want to scream it out loud as you look down at the people down the street. Argent’s apartment has a hell of a view. From up here, you could just let everyone know how you feel…

You see a couple kissing on a corner and it almost makes you cry with joy. The smiling… you can’t help it. You must look really stupid now.

Before you know it, something snaps. Something goes loose, and you feel your mind expanding like a swarm of locust, in every direction. You’re not even sure what’s going on, and then it’s too late to stop it…

Their minds, worried by everyday problems drown into yours… and you share the tingling with them. They’re all in your mind, a bunch of absolute strangers. You can’t stop. You can’t let go, or raise your shields, there’s nothing left of them.

Instantly you can see the difference…

They all start to look a bit drowsy. A pair of young girls sitting on a bench start giggling uncontrollably. And old lady feeding the birds sheds some tears. The guys doing skateboard begin kissing each other. A young couple just hugs and begins dancing on the streets...Wow...

You’re the puppet master… but this is a different kind of puppeteering. You’re not ordering them to do anything. You’re just sharing a feeling, and it’s them who act like a bunch of idiots…

Idiot. You smirk. Maybe you’re the idiot.

You’re blushing red and it’s spreading even to your ears. And so is everyone else… the tingling keeps spreading. It doesn’t cause any strain to you, it’s almost as if you weren’t doing anything at all.

“What the hells is going on? Are you doing this Cyrus?” Ricardo  says coming to your side and looking down the street

“I can’t stop it…” you try to explain

“Well figure it out and stop it already!” Argent’s says walking angrily to her own balcony “All this sweetness is killing me!” she adds before taking a kleenex tissue to clear the tears from her silver cheeks.

“What is he doing? Is he’s doing it to you too?”

“I don’t know, it’s like he’s pushing everyone face first into some stupid rom-com movie and it’s making me want to throw up!” she complains.

“S-sorryyy” you let on “I’m trying to stop…”

Ortega just explodes in laughter at you two.

People on the other side of the street start blushing and acting even weirder… it keeps spreading, and you can’t control it. Ricardo catches a glimpse and grins.

“You should really stop”

“I’m can’t! It just keeps spreading”

“I’m losing brain cells with each passing second Ricardo, do something!” Argent groans.

“How is this happening?”

“I don’t know, I never felt like this. It’s like this thing in my chest and… it’s pulling me up and it’s making my powers go crazy… And it keeps spreading further… I think it’s gone up four blocks in every direction now… How do I stop it?”

Ortega and Argent look at each other briefly… Ortega laughs again.

“It’s not funny! What if it spreads to the whole city?” she complains, though she can’t help a smile, the tingling getting hold of even her.

“Well it’s going to be one happy city”

“One big orgy, you mean”

“What’s happening to me?” You ask hiding your face in your hands

“You’re in love, genius,” Argent says “And you’re making everyone feel like they're inside that awful movie… the one with the ship that sinks?”

“Titanic?” you ask without thinking, the theme song booming into your mind

“NOOOOOO!!!” she curses holding her head as she can clearly hear it too now. Everyone can... “AWW FUCK! STOP THAT RIGHT NOW!!”

“I told you I can’t!!!!”  You feel what little control you had slipping completely, as it spreads further and further, the whole neighborhood affected now… thousands of people, kissing, blushing and giggling for no good reason...

“What is he doing now?” Ortega asks worriedly

“HE’S BOMBING MY FUCKING BRAIN WITH CELINE DION! HE’S DOING IT TO THE WHOLE CITY! Tell him to stop… please… please” she begs to squirm, finally losing herself into whatever *it* is, smiling drowsy and dreamily.

“Cyrus that’s just … Evil” Ricardo snorts

“The help me stop! I don’t know how… I’ve kissed you both many times and this never happened. We even had sex!”

“Sex isn’t the same as love,” Ortega says wrapping an arm around you, which just makes the whole psychic event surge further… You can feel people across the city collectively gasping as they feel the arm that isn’t there. Shit, what have you become?

“W-what do you mean?”

“He’s right”, Argent says, taking hold of your arm and getting closer. “Being thirsty for someone isn’t the same as accepting that you are loved. It’s a whole different thing… it can turn your world upside down”

“Guys… this isn’t helping… You’re just making it stronger“ you can feel it spreading furiously, people all over the city are now falling for it. Not even a strain in your brain. How the hell are you keeping this up?!

“Maybe it doesn’t have to stop yet” Ortega grins, holding you tighter

“You’re right... I think we know how we can pull you back to the here and now” Argent giggles suggestively, before kissing your neck.

“What… do you mean?” you ask like a scared hare being circled by hungry vultures. 

They pull you back inside, letting you down on Argent’s good couch. The “L” shaped one… 

“Oh no,” you whisper as they both sit beside you.

You gasp again, going fucsia as two pairs of hands begin feeling your whole body… Argent’s teeth biting your ear makes you shiver…  Ortega’s hand sliding down your pants and making a firm grab causing you to almost jump.

Warm… so fucking warm…

“Aah..ha…  w-what  are you doing?”

“We’re going to bring you down hard” Argent whispers in your ear.

“I’m not sure that’s how it works…”

“Well, you asked us to help you, right?” Ortega asks, enjoying to finally see you squirm. “We’re helping”

Later that day

“This is Mia Ochoa, reporting live from Los Diablos. We’re interviewing victims of what is now being referred to “The Curse of Celine Dion”, a mysterious massive hysteria event that caused the first-ever recorded mass collective orgasm, and then vanished as mysteriously as it started.”

“Are aliens trying to communicate with us? Is this a religious omen? Perhaps a toxic poisoning? Here to answer our questions,  joining us are a group of Ufologists, religious leaders, psychologists and several scientists from the institute off…”

“I’m so sorry….” you say feeling completely mortified. You can’t believe you did that. “I swear it’s never going to happen again”

“Hell to the no!. It’s definitely going to happen again Cyrus ” Ortega says cracking in laughs at Ochoa’s reporting

“I hate you both, and If I ever hear that song again I swearI’ll murder you,” Argent says, holding your hand. “But that was terrific” she adds in the end
