As much as I love all the diversity in my scifi and fantasy shows like The Expanse and The Wheel of Time, I continue to be disappointed on the colorism front.

The Expanse had the same problem with respect to Karal playing an antagonist to Naomi and now with the first season ending soon in Wheel of Time, I can’t help but notice that the most evil character we have seen so far is Valda and then there is Padan Fain lurking about. As much as I love Johann Myers as Padan and Valda is deliciously evil, there are no dark skinned protagonists to balance them out.   And if we are going to be getting the Seanchan soon, then Jordan’s most prominent main black character is a literal slaver and I don’t think the optics of that are good.

The show has been good so far in terms of the diversity of the cast, that I am thinking these issues are because of color blind casting and the best actor getting the job. At the same time, I want the show to do better with regards to this in future seasons - the Seafolk would be an opportunity to course correct and I wouldn’t mind if they cast some dark actors to play characters like Faile for example  or Rand’s allies in places like Tear - someone like Darlin Sisnera or even the many Aes Sedai who regularly pop up in the story.

Based on everything Rafe Judkins has said and the amazing job they have done so far in terms of diversity, I am going to trust and hope that moving forward they improve and get better on the colorism issue as well.
