So I typed up a long response with facts and lore snippets about how things change in the 40k universe all the time and was ready to post it as a response to a Facebook thread going insane about the new Woman Custode. But then I thought better of it and deleted it.

These people crying about it dont care about either lore or facts. They have their hate and misogyny and that is all that matters. They love to make others just as miserable as themselves and I refuse to engage in that.

Its like the old saying, “Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their leven and beat you with experience.

So what can we do that is actually constructive to meet these idiots? Do it with love, with happiness and joy. Trolls crack in the sunlight after all.

If you have a Facebook or Twitter account, go to the post and write how happy and excited you are about these releases. Show others they arent alone in wanting this. And of course, the bottom line, if you have the expendable money, buy the things you like.

And if someone responds negatively to your comment, just block them and move on. You won't miss them.

"Let's make games and media about other mythologies and pantheons other than Norse or Greco-Roman" is a take I really, really get, but the unfortunate reality is that most Western media conglomerates are pretty culturally white, and can you imagine the appropriation shitshow that would result from them portraying indigenous mythologies instead of the two pantheons that people can at least somewhat ascribe to Western European tradition? Ancient Egyptian seems the next most "safe" due to cultural penetration and time remove, and even that sparks discourse when it's done. Honestly I'm surprised that Disney even mostly got away with Moana, and that hardly went without critique. I think the execs that don't want bad press are well aware of this and are afraid to wade in.

I mean the obvious answer is for them to just hire people who can boast more claim to the tradition in question, but unfortunately it doesn't tend to work that way en masse, and also, even if they did do that, there would be a continent who would complain anyway. Own narratives are frequently called out as bad rep, usually by people who don't know the provenance (but sometimes even when they do!), and it'd be even worse with a big corporate name from the west attached.

Anyway buy foreign art I guess, but under current trends the big multi-billion God of War equivalent about African tradition is unlikely to come soon, I guess. Kind of an unfortunate side effect of the representation and appropriation discourse that makes certain kinds of narrative more scarce.

(A possible exception to all this might be, for instance, Japanese spiritual tradition, as there are plenty of Japanese media products that do well in the West. But this proves the point, because for instance I can think of examples of video games and films that feature oni, etc, whereas I can't for the less widespread or internationally exposed traditions that I describe).

It really is all about expectations and trust because the number of people I've seen watch Stranger Things now without hearing about Byler and start to get suspicious at season 2 is ASTOUNDING. And it's because when you're surrounded by more representation, you notice it more too. The heteronormativity has been more broken down to acknowledge when traditional romantic cliches are being applied to people of the same gender.

Like I said in another post, my physical therapist said Mike checked Will out in the Halloween scene. She didn't think it was on purpose but I also don't think she would have noticed at all a few years ago.

Really, it's just a sweet observation of progress in general representation in the environment and what it can do for perceptions and normalization of queerness.

like honestly just give your non binary characters traditionally "gendered" features. just do it. it's not like being androgynous ever stopped non binary characters from being misgendered.

frisk undertale and kris deltarune were androgynous and are only ever referred to by "they/them" and ppl are still arguing over how the "main character is not the player but their own person" message didn't apply to their genders bc they refuse to wrap their head around different pronouns. raine owlhouse was paraded around as "disney's first ever nb representation" by everyone and their mother but bc they have short hair other countries dub them as male. this also happens to most anime nb characters bc of how japanese pronouns work. halara raincode literally has the color scheme of the non binary flag AND their in-game profile says that they, and i quote "have no specified gender" AND several characters remark on it in the actual game but bc theyre voiced by a female voice actor ppl still call them a woman.

like literally at this point just give your nb characters huge tits and a massive beard. if ppl refuse to accept the existence of non binary characters in media, then there is no way to make a character non binary "enough" to convince them otherwise. no matter how much you hammer in their androgyny in an attempt to detach them from "male" and "female," there will be people determined to assign gender roles to any trait you give your character.

creators being hesitant to give their non binary characters traits that could be associated with a binary gender is why every goddamn genderqueer character that the creator wants you to take seriously in popular media has shoulder length hair and a board-flat figure and a perfectly neutrally pitched voice. like. just do what you want at this point. the character is non binary because your story said so and people who misgender them would have done that no matter how androgynous they look.

One thing I don't think people fully understand the importance of, is diversity shown to children.

For example, I was shopping the other day, and there was a Muslim doll, with all the other dolls. Two boys, must have been no more than five, got really excited, they were delighted to see representation of themselves

Another example, when I was younger, I read a book that involved queer characters. I fully believe that it contributed greatly to my self acceptance, and understanding of myself.

Representation is important.

In all seriousness, the non binary representation in this season is probably the best nonbinary representation I have ever seen in media.

Starting from Aziraphale not assuming Muriels pronouns and referring to them with they/them like it's the most normal thing in the world.

To Crowley (and Shax) using Beelzebubs pronouns so so so effortlessly.

No major talks like "What do you mean they?""I'm not a he/she I'm a they.""Huh? A what?" "Mom, dad *major inhale with tears streaming down their face* I'm non binary"

No "I'm non binary and it is so so so difficult whatever will I do with my life."

Beelzebub not needing to correct or remind anyone of their pronouns.

Misgendering being completely defenestrated

Non binary people being in the background and also being in the spotlight

Non binary people actually having personalities, feelings, thoughts and their own problems and not just being there for the character progression of cis people. (Or as a cash grab)

Just non binary people naturally existing. It's beautiful.

Edit: ALSO one of the two main characters (the two BOTH being actually non binary, like dafuq? You don't have that ANYWHERE else) outwardly stating they're non binary in a very casual and not at all heavy way

And the different types of non binary being recognised. He/him Crowley and Aziraphale, they/them Beels, Saraqael and the magic shopkeepers' spouse (both of whom are polyamorous!), she/they God, he/they Satan etc.

I wish there was more representation of disabilities and chronic illness in fantasy, science fiction and action genres.

Not just a side character with 30 seconds of screentime. An important character that doesn't just exist to further the storylines of other characters. I want a character that doesn't get "cured" or healed. A character that stays disabled and/or chronically ill. A character that isn't afraid to ask for help. One that doesn't think they're a burden and doesn't try to hide their disability/ chronic illness.

I want to see how it affects them, not just know they're disabled/chronically ill and it jist never gets mentioned again. I don't mean it should be their entire personality but being disabled and or chronically ill can affect many parts of life.

I just wish there was more representation of disabilities and chronic illness that shows every part of it. Especially in fantasy and science fiction it's lacking.

I really need to stress how groundbreaking Martha Jones literally is. She made her mark as the first official onscreen Black Doctor Who companion, and quite literally paved the way for future Black and other companions of colour to star on the show, like Bill Potts, Yasmin Khan, and Ryan Sinclair. And these characters would also make Doctor Who history in their own ways with Bill being the first onscreen Black lesbian companion, Yasmin being the first onscreen South Asian companion, and Ryan being the first onscreen Black companion with a disability.
