Season Preview: Everton
womenscompetitions.thefa.com
Willie Kirk’s side will be eager to overcome a difficult-looking start after a disappointing campaign in the Super League last season.
Everton finished tenth with just a meagre 12 points, saved only from relegation by Yeovil who suffered a ten-point deduction after going into administration.
But the Toffees have a daunting set of fixtures to kick off this year’s campaign, facing Birmingham and Manchester City in two of their opening three games.
The club have executed an innovative recruitment strategy, looking abroad for reinforcements in the form of Valerenga goalkeeper Tinja-Riikka Korpela, Ajax defender Kika van Es and FC 91 Fleury midfielder Maeva Clemaron.
Korpela is an experienced customer with 80 caps for her native Finland, while Everton will be hoping Van Es’s 57 appearances for the Netherlands will help shore up a fragile defence.
Meanwhile, Clemaron will bring considerable experience to an otherwise youthful midfield, making over 150 appearances in France’s Division One Feminine since 2008.
They have nevertheless also sought to bolster their squad through more domestic signings, with Lucy Graham, Molly Pike and England Under-19 captain Esme Morgan – on loan – arriving from Bristol City, Chelsea and Manchester City respectively.
The club have overseen a number of outgoings, with Angharad James departing for Reading and Siri Worm joining Tottenham while Rebecca Flaherty, Olivia Chance and Emma Brownlee all became free agents.
With Casey Stoney’s menacing-looking Manchester United replacing Yeovil in the league, the odds appear to be stacked against Everton, but their fans will be hoping their revamped squad will be capable of ascending the table.
There have been early signs of promise in pre-season, however, with Kirk’s side toppling Ajax 2-1 to win the NextGen Series in one of six victories in the space of just seven games.
The Toffees also undertook a successful tour to Kenya in July, an experience that was invariably beneficial in enhancing the unity among Kirk’s squad.
The team will be keen to take that summer momentum into the season, particularly given their new stadium – they have moved from Widnes to Southport – and a formidable opening set of fixtures that could prove confidence-denting if results don’t go their way.
If Kirk’s players fail to pick up points early on, it could turn out to be another difficult campaign for Everton.
2018-19 Stats Watch
Finish: 10th
Top scorer: Inessa Kaagman (5)
Biggest victory: 3-2 (home to Reading)
Heaviest defeat: 4-0 (home to Arsenal and Manchester City)
Key Ins/Outs:
Ins: Tinja-Riikka Korpela, Kika van Es, Maeva Clemaron, Lucy Graham, Molly Pike, Esme Morgan (loan)
Outs: Angharad James, Siri Worm, Rebecca Flaherty, Olivia Chance, Emma Brownlee
Player to watch: Maeva Clemaron
After a difficult season for Everton last term, Clemaron’s arrival from FC 91 Fleury will have instilled fans with a much-needed dose of optimism.
Clemaron brings an experienced head to the side’s midfield, playing 128 games for Saint-Etienne between 2008 and 2017 and being capped four times for France.
The versatile midfielder was part of her county’s World Cup squad this summer and will be a player Kirk will hope can provide both stability and creativity to Everton in what promises to be a challenging season.
Everton struggled for goals last term – they scored just 18 – so Clemaron’s influence and role in providing assists for the likes of Inessa Kaagman, Hannah Cain and Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah will be pivotal.
If the Toffees are going to enjoy any degree of success this season, Clemaron will need to perform.
What they said:
Gabby George
“I can’t wait to kick start this season – we’ve signed a few players from the international stage to help us progress forward which is really exciting for us. I think things can only get better from last season – obviously we didn’t finish anywhere near where we wanted to or achieve what we wanted to. Hopefully we can put a stamp on how we play and go out there and perform week in week out – we’re going to go out there and put in our best performances and see where that gets us at the end of the season. We’re implementing what Willie (Kirk) wants and how he wants us to play – that fits to a lot of the players we’ve got and that have been brought in so hopefully we can take that into next season and have a better season. We just want to get on the ball and play more than we have recently – a lot of our games we’ve just been defending but now we’re going to go out and show we can actually play.”
Chloe Kelly
“I’m really excited about the season ahead – we’ve got a new team now with new staff and new players. Obviously we didn’t do too well last year, but we’re really looking forward to getting going. We’ve got a new stadium to move into as well, so I think it’s exciting times for Everton as a whole and everyone around us is very excited at the moment. I think we need to finish higher in the table this year and do well in the cup competitions. We need to be better off the ball as last season we conceded too many goals – we also need to be more confident in possession and bring that confidence onto the field.”

Hannah Hampton becomes ambitious Aston Villa's latest smart signing
Tumblr media
Aston Villa have continued their strong summer recruitment drive by securing the signing of rising star goalkeeper Hannah Hampton following her recent exit from local rivals Birmingham, positioning themselves for a rise up the WSL table this coming season.Still just 20, Hampton has been called up to the senior England squad for training camps on a number of occasions over the past 18 months and is widely tipped to seriously challenge for the Lionesses gloves in the future. She has been a regular with Birmingham in the WSL since 2018 and had the added bonus of starting her football career as an outfield player in Villarreal’s academy after her family moved to Spain.Hampton has signed a two-year contract with Villa and manager Carla Ward, who was in charge at Birmingham last season, has called her one of the best goalkeepers in the WSL.“She is a really gifted individual who can play with both feet and is comfortable under pressure,” Ward told AVFC.co.uk. “Her ambition is to become England's number one and hopefully we can continue to develop her and help her achieve that.”Having been promoted to the top flight for the first time in 2020, Villa survived on the final day of the 2020/21 WSL season and are targeting significant improvement in their second season.Prior to taking a job at Angel City in the Los Angeles in May, former Villa director of football Eniola Aluko exclusively told 90min that recruitment was an important of the plan to build on last season. Hampton is just the latest of a flurry of smart signings the club has made this summer.“The club will have to invest to bring in players who can take it up to another level and start pushing towards mid-table, similar to how the men’s team have,” Aluko explained at the time, giving an early hint towards the flurry of smart signings that have now been made. More may yet come.
Tumblr media
Switzerland international Alisha Lehmann has already joined Villa from West Ham / Marcio Machado/Getty ImagesHampton is Villa’s sixth new arrival in a matter of days. Business started with the announcement of Alisha Lehmann’s move from West Ham, quickly followed by deals for four proven WSL players in Remi Allen, Sarah Mayling, Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah and Meaghan Sargeant. For Villa, the ambition is clear. They not only want to be a WSL club, but a competitive WSL club. If things go according to plan and the newly improved squad starts the new season well, a place in the top half of the table is within reach in what is a largely fluid competition below the top sides. If it is assumed that Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal will be the top three again and decent Everton and Manchester United teams will be battling for fourth and fifth places, sixth is absolutely up for grabs for any team capable of getting a few good results and finding some consistency.Brighton proved that last season. And while there is bound to competition from others like Reading, Tottenham and West Ham with similar ideas, Villa’s recruitment is putting them in a strong position to make it a reality for themselves. For more from Jamie Spencer, follow him on Twitter and Facebook! Arsenal 4-0 Everton: Gunners up to second after landmark WSL win over Everton
Arsenal 4-0 Everton: Gunners up to second after landmark WSL win over Everton
Arsenal moved up to second in the Women’s Super League after quickfire doubles in both halves sank Everton. Beth Mead teed up Jordan Nobbs for a close-range finish, before Jill Roord crossed for Caitlin Foord to tap in. Jen Beattie nodded in unmarked from Caitlin McCabe’s corner, and Nobbs’ crossfield pass then found Mead to curl in a finish from the edge of the box. Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah’s fine…

Late drama as Arsenal beat Everton to reach Women's FA Cup final
Arsenal reached their 16th Women’s FA Cup final as Louise Quinn’s stoppage-time header beat battling Everton.
Danielle Carter had put the visitors in front with a calm, low finish from Heather O’Reilly’s right-wing cross.
Chloe Kelly’s penalty put Everton level after half-time when Dominique Janssen was harshly adjudged to have brought down Courtney Sweetman-Kirk in the box.
But defender Quinn nodded in from a last-gasp corner, sending record 14-time winners Arsenal back to Wembley.
The dramatic victory kept alive the Gunners’ bid to claim a second domestic cup competition of the season, having already lifted the Continental Tyres Cup (League Cup) in March.
Reaching two finals this term had looked unlikely for English women’s football’s most successful club prior to Joe Montemurro’s appointment in November, but the Australian has overseen a significant upturn in form since his arrival.
Montemurro’s side could have won by a greater margin, but Vivianne Miedema fired over from close range and Kim Little dragged a low shot narrowly wide late on, before Quinn snatched it.
Sunday’s tie at Everton was shown live on the BBC Red Button and online, with both Women’s FA Cup semi-finals being broadcast live for the first time in the competition’s 48-year history.
Arsenal will now face either Women’s Super League leaders Chelsea or Manchester City in the final at Wembley on Saturday, 5 May, with those two meeting later on Sunday (15:30 BST).
