I'd like to imagine that when together, Freddy avoids certain places such as the elevator at all costs and refuses to tell Bardon why, who of course is oblivious about it, until one day Freddy gets a sudden panic attack when he is trapped inside a small place and a distressed confused Bardon tries desperately to calm him down, only to realize he is actually claustrophobic.

what determines canon esper strength

obviously rarity make things stronger but that’s just gameplay

But despite rarity

Bardon and Lewis are equal in power but from the story the thing that differentiates the two are how they fight Bardon more cautious and Lewis is more wild

Bardon stronger that Catherine and she doesn’t humor the idea of taking him on in a fair fight

Freddy is just as strong as Long Mian fighting each other for hours

Fabrice is terrified of an angry Melanie and rather just run

so storywise what exactly is the reason characters are so strong

1. More experience

The reason The Esper Seven are so powerful is because they’ve had their powers longer than others and have discover esper abilities and powers that others espers have simply yet to unlock

Getting your esper powers at a young age allows an esper to just naturally come across powers that most wouldn’t think about but kids are just curious and reckless enough to try it out

2.Technique

While having superpowers is nice but have solid execution can make up for it. A character like Drew can take on many people relying on his fencing and proper posture

3.Ferocity

Being crazy or excessively cruel is a very powerful thing. You can always make up for strength and technique by just being wild with some killing intent

4. Mythological source

Sometime simply having a strong power is all you need. Although if too strong and you might not be able to handle it yourself

5. Augmentation

They were already powerful and esper powers added onto it. Case in point being Cecilia already being a witch that got esper powers from the Eygptian Goddess of Magic just got a power boost to what she was already doing

After writing my long ass post about the Chinese Espers’ names I did one for the other Espers too, here you go

Generally, the non-chinese esper names are just phonetically sinonized. Conventionally, pinyin is does not use capitalization so ignore the capitals cause i can’t be arsed to change them lol Note: most of their names are conventional Anglophone names, so there’s a corresponding conventional translation of their names, i think it’s just interesting to note that some are changed for whatever reason

Just compiling some things to use in fanfic, either as reference material or just as things to mention for flavor text. Largely focusing on US publications/media or things I think are fairly big name or would relatively easy to get in the US in the 1980s. 

This is a long post so I’m just gonna cut it here there’s no better place to put it lol

Publications

Anabiosis/Journal of Near-Death Studies - a quarterly peer-reviewed academic journal devoted to the field of near-death studies. Founded in 1982 originally called Anabiosis then got a name change in 1987.

The Equinox (subtitle: The Review of Scientific Illuminism) - a periodical that served as the official organ of the A∴A∴, a magical order founded by Aleister Crowley (although material is often of import to its sister organization, Ordo Templi Orientis). Begun in 1909, it mainly featured articles about occultism and magick, while several issues also contained poetry, fiction, plays, artwork, and biographies. The last issue was published in 1998.

Fate - a U.S. magazine about paranormal phenomena. Fate was founded in 1948. Fate magazine is the longest-running magazine devoted to the paranormal.

Journal of Parapsychology - a biannual peer-reviewed academic journal covering research on psi phenomena, including telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, and psychokinesis, as well as human consciousness in general and anomalous experiences. It was established in April 1937.

The Society for Psychical Research (UK) body of publications:

Proceedings of the Society for Psychical Research First published in 1882 as a public record of the activities of the SPR, the Proceedings are now reserved for longer pieces of work, such as Presidential Addresses, and are only occasionally published.The current editor is Dr David Vernon.

Journal of the Society for Psychical Research The Journal of the Society for Psychical Research has been published quarterly since 1884. It was introduced as a private, members-only periodical to supplement the Proceedings. It now focuses on current laboratory and field research, but also includes theoretical, methodological and historical papers on parapsychology. It also publishes book reviews and correspondence. Psi Encyclopedia The Psi Encyclopedia is a collection of articles and case studies about psi research, involving the scientific investigation of psychic phenomena. A bequest of Nigel Buckmaster enabled the foundation of the encyclopedia.

UFO Magazine - an American magazine that was devoted to the subject of  unidentified flying objects (UFOs), the extraterrestrial hypothesis (ETH), as well as paranormal and Fortean subjects in general. Founded in 1986, when defunct in 2012.

The New Equinox was a Ritual Magic publication founded in the mid-1970s by Ray Sherwin whose main interest at that time was the magic of Aleister Crowley. It was published between 1976 and 1979.The magazine was based in East Morton in Yorkshire.Tony Venables was joint editor for a few issues. Peter J. Carroll, who later went on, with Ray Sherwin, to found the Illuminates of Thanateros, was a regular contributor.

Coast to Coast AM america’s leading paranormal radio show to this day. Tackles everything from aliens to Big Foot to ghosts. Founded 1988

L’Américaine - Catherine Bardon

“Le bonheur, on doit le fabriquer de ses propres mains.”

Il y a quelques semaines, je tombais sous le charme des Rosenheck, rencontrés dans les Déracinés de Catherine Bardon. Cette famille autrichienne, chassée de son pays natal par la guerre, installée par dépit en République Dominicaine à défaut d’avoir pu trouver refuge aux Etats-Unis, m’avait séduite et j’avais grandement apprécié le voyage proposé par Catherine Bardon, à travers le monde mais aussi l’histoire, car j’avais découvert alors un pays et un pan de la Shoah que je ne connaissais pas auparavant. Quand j’ai découvert qu’il y a une suite, je n’ai eu qu’une hâte et la lire, et c’est ainsi que je me suis lancée dans L’Américaine, qui nous relate les aventures de Ruth, la fille de Wilhelm et Almah.  

Qu’est-ce que ça raconte ?

Alors que le pouls de New York bat au rythme des années 1960 et de la contre-culture, une jeune fille, Ruth, s'y installe pour y suivre ses études en rêvant de devenir journaliste. Elle y découvre l'amitié, le rock, l'amour... tout en se questionnant sur son identité. Pas évident d'avoir laissé derrière elle sa famille et sa terre natale, la République dominicaine... Septembre 1961. Depuis le pont du bateau sur lequel elle a embarqué, Ruth tourne le dos à son île natale, la République dominicaine. En ligne de mire : New York, l'université, un stage au Times. Une nouvelle vie... Elle n'en doute pas, bientôt elle sera journaliste comme l'était son père, Wilhelm. Ruth devient très vite une véritable New-Yorkaise et vit au rythme du rock, de l'amitié et des amours. Des bouleversements du temps aussi : l'assassinat de Kennedy, la marche pour les droits civiques, les frémissements de la contre culture, l'opposition de la jeunesse à la guerre du Viêt Nam... Mais Ruth, qui a laissé derrière elle les siens dans un pays gangrené par la dictature où la guerre civile fait rage, s'interroge et se cherche. Qui est- elle vraiment ? Dominicaine, née de parents juifs autrichiens ? Américaine d'adoption ? Où va-t-elle construire sa vie, elle dont les parents ont dû tout fuir et réinventer leur existence ? Trouvera-t-elle la réponse en Israël où vit Svenja, sa marraine ?

Que dire ? En toute sincérité, je ressors déçue de cette lecture, et je ne m’y attendais vraiment pas au vu de mon enthousiasme à l’issue du premier tome. Je pensais retrouver le brio des Déracinés, mais il se trouve que Wilhelm était le vrai cœur et moteur de l’histoire, et sans lui, les autres personnages ont perdu de leurs couleurs. Je les ai trouvés caricaturaux, loin des standards établis dans l’opus précédent. Almah, qui était une femme inspirante, unique, rebelle, n’est qu’une pâle parodie d’elle-même; je n’ai pas retrouvé la femme malicieuse et pétillante que j’avais aimée. Ruth, prometteuse, est finalement une héroïne avec peu de charisme, qui est assaillie par les mêmes doutes pendant tout le roman, qui tourne en rond, rêve de s’échapper de son île, puis la regrette, rêve de New York, puis l’exècre, rêve d’amour et de famille avec des hommes qui ne lui rendent pas son amour. Elle ressemble à beaucoup de protagonistes, manque de confiance et on se lasse rapidement de ses questionnements à trois francs six sous; ses indécisions et états d’âme prennent trop de place dans le roman, et c’est ce qui, à mon sens, mine l’histoire. Je ne parle pas du cliché Arturo, enfant mal aimé de sa famille et de son pays, meilleur ami gay de Ruth; ni de Frederick qui devient un patriarche agricole pas très malin; ni de Lizzie l’esprit libre embrigadée dans les expériences hippies jusqu’au fin fond du Mexique. 

La suite n’est pas désagréable à lire pour autant, elle est sympathique, se lit facilement, mais on ne retrouve pas le rythme et le riche tissu historique, complexe et bien amené, qui était un élément coup de cœur de la série. Pourtant il y avait de quoi faire; mais la guerre du Vietnam et la lutte contre les discriminations racistes sont évoquées de façon pâlotte. On imagine déjà bien la suite, je vois déjà Nathan et Arturo finir ensemble, les mariages et les naissances se multiplier...Ma mère a également le troisième, que je lirai certainement pour voir si la plume retrouve de son brio et ce que la vie réserve à nos héros. Mais, je maintiens que certains romans n’ont pas besoin de suite : Les Déracinés en tant que roman aurait pu être un chef-d’œuvre de littérature contemporaine, mais la saga est finalement peu inspirée et aurait mieux fait de s’arrêter au premier opus. Pour ma part, j’aurais préféré ne pas avoir entamer la suite pour garder un souvenir immaculé du brillant “Les Déracinés”.

excellent road along the foot of the Salève, the high singular calcerous white steppy mountain we looked upon from our windows at the hotel de Berges - the Salève very fine - the Mount de Sion a French lower mountain and all green and cultivated joins the end of it and closes the ampitheatrical valley of Geneva - from the Mount de Sion very fine views of the town Hahe - out to 3:35 began the descent of Mount de Sion and turn left round the foot of the Salève, and fine view down into Savoy - everywhere shut in in the distance by high mountains - white calcerous - the hoary rugged tops of many of them white as if streaked or covered with snow - very picturesque drive -

at Cruiselles at 4:10 picturesque village at the bottom of the valley - no post horses kept here (we left the direct road too Aix and Chambery (right) just out of Saint Julien) but luckily the diligence had arrived a little while before and without stopping to bait the horses properly we were off with them in 18 minutes, driving 3 and letting the 4th follow - we could not have stopt comfortably at the auberge at Cruiselle's - from Cruiselles the white rocky mountains rather approach one and firmly back the green wooded and cultivated hills - very picturesque beautiful drive - narrow though good road - at 5:25 after crossing the little river Fier (probably in winter a large stream) over the new wooden bridge of la Caille, stopt a few minutes at the little village of la Caille to water the horses - fine white rugged mountains seemed at a little distance en face - at 5:50 to 6:00 and afterwards the fine white rugged mountains magnificent - finally standing out like mountain headlands at sea – 6:10 find beautiful magnificent descent up the hill strewed plain, and fine views of Annecy situated at the foot of Mount St Catherine qui fait partie de la chaîne des Bauges but the lake not in sight, but the Lake hid

- at 6:47 view (near) of the nice town of Annecy with its 3 or 4 churches and fine larger castle - at 6:47 first view of the picturesque little finally mountain-locked lake - at the hotel de Genève at Annecy at 7 - walked 1/4 hour along the handsome poplar and platinus shaded Ave along the shallow reedy top of the lake - finely surrounded by mountains -

dinner at 7:05 to 8 1/2 - the public salle le manger but nobody there at first and only two guests at last - man and girl (harp and she singing) came to us at dinner - sat writing in Ann’s room while she got into bed and fell asleep at 9 3/4 and wrote of yesterday and today till 11 - very fine day F 68° at 11:05 pm
