What makes a good rapper?

During my time as a rapper, I’ve been asked many times what advice I would give someone who’s just starting out. There are several elements to make rap an art all your own. Here’s my tips and advice:

1. Be original. Don’t bite off of other artists. Make something that is unique and all your own.

2. Perfect your writing. Keep writing even if it’s no good. Writing raps are like a muscle. If you build it up, it becomes stronger.

3. Believe in your lyrics. If you rap like your just reading off a page it’ll show. Have passion and conviction.

4. Use punchlines. They’re like accents for your song. Plus they grab attention .

5. Don’t just ride the beat. Anyone can follow a straight rhythm. But you should play around with different ways of delivering your flow.

6. Be yourself. At the end of the day, you should be proud of your work. Put it down how you feel it needs to be put down.

7. Use a variety of different producers. This will diversify your sound and give your listener something different each track. I’m not saying don’t heavily rely on your favorite producer. But don’t depend on just one for all your beats.

8. Be authentic. Don’t rap about stuff you know nothing about. Don’t try to be gangster if your not about that life. Don’t rhyme about the hood if you’re from the suburbs. You get the picture.

9. Don’t write in the studio. You’re there to work and record. Listen to your beats and write your rhymes at home. Don’t pay for studio time if you’re just gonna sit there and write. It’s a waste of time and money.

10. And finally, my last piece of advice: HAVE FUN! 😁
