The Veiled Virgin was created by Italian sculptor, Giovanni Strazza (1818–1875), in Rome during the 1850s.
The statue appears translucent but is made completely out of Carrara marble, a material derived from Tuscany and used frequently by Italian Renaissance artists and ancient Roman builders.
In 1856, the statue was transported to Newfoundland where it was received by Bishop John Thomas Mullock (27 September 1807 – 26 March 1869).
In his diary, he wrote:
"Received safely from Rome, a beautiful statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary in marble, by Strazza. The face is veiled, and the figure and features are all seen. It is a perfect gem of art."

"Freddy Marbic."
An  imposing marble sculpture bears a striking resemblance to a lifelike inflatable chair.
Freddy believes he is composed of plastic, oblivious to the fact that he is, in reality, crafted from pristine Carrara marble. Even when confronted with this truth, he simply dismisses it. In an era where opinions often overshadow facts, Freddy serves as a call to maintain a critical perspective on the world around us.
"We must not unquestioningly accept everything that is presented to us."

Baroque elements from 18th century #interiordesign in subtle ways that challenge the initial appearance of a mid-century modern interior.
Tumblr media
Indeed, the small rounded #sofas, squiggly coffee table, the asymmetric sculptures and arched hallways give off the impression of a contemporary home that emanates softness and comfort.
Intertwined with these modern features we also observe the distinguishing elements of a more classical design. For example, placed directly above the sleek chandelier stands a Rococo style wall moulding with a matching pattern on the corners of each room.
The same design is visible in the white floor to ceiling console mirror, the contrasting black bureau placed strategically against the white walls, and the elegant presence of marble in countertops and in the kitchen backsplash.
Adding an extra twist to this mixture of styles, the #design also incorporates the organic and natural presence of wood through matching furniture, wall panels, and frames.
This way, wood creates a balance between past and present with its timeless quality.

Detail of “Blue Dive” (2021), sodalite, 70 x 30 x 30 centimeters.
Polished Feet and Ears Emerge from Rugged Hunks of Marble in Dorothy Cross’s Sculptures
In Dorothy Cross’s “Blue Dive,” a pair of feet with curled, spread toes breach a rugged fragment of vibrant stone streaked with white veins. The sculpture casts the Connemara-based Cork-born artist’s own extremities into a block of rare Brazilian sodalite, a nod to the fleeting nature of human time in comparison to the longevity and enduring qualities of Earth’s resources.
The rich, stone carving is just one anatomical piece in Cross’s solo exhibition titled Damascus Rose, which is open through April 14 at London’s Frith Street Gallery. From a sleek, tiled walkway to a pillow bearing a single ear, many of the sculptures on view are chiseled into the red-hued titular stone and were born out of the artist’s experience in Carrara, Italy, a region known for its marble.
