I'm very glad that season 7 of Outlander (the tv show) is out. I've spent the weekend knitting and rewatching season 6 (and also recovering from a busy work week).
Tumblr media
I was thinking about the fact that talkie movies have only been around for about 100 years, and really well-done period pieces...with costuming, locations, well-researched storylines...for even less time than that. I'm glad to live in a time of being able to explore historical fictional in this very vivid way.
I wish some production company would agree to make more seasons of Gentleman Jack.
While rewatching Outlander, I was also thinking that I'd like to have a theme song 馃幍 that plays when my wife and I have important conversations. Like when I walked into the garage today while she was hanging out with the cat and told her I got the broken glass out of the kitchen disposal? That merited a round of a moving theme song imho.
Most of Claire (the doll)'s fabulous outfit was made by etsy shop storytimefashions except for her lovely scarf, which was knitted by mrsquinnsdollclothes. Jamie's outfit was made by dolldaydreamboutique.

I wanted to jump on the bandwagon because this seemed really fun!
I鈥檝e made a ton of doll wishlists on this blog already and I don鈥檛 see that stopping but for 2022, I wanted to challenge myself to branch out more.
I鈥檝e mentioned before that I鈥檇 love to bring Saila home one day but currently my collection stands at five 18 inch American Girl dolls, one Wellie Wisher, and one Magic Attic doll.
For this challenge, I wanted to only pick one doll from each brand, although they certainly don鈥檛 represent the only doll I want from each line.
1) Saila is a Maplelea doll. I think she might be the only doll on this list that is the only doll from her line that I鈥檓 interested in.
2) Elinor is a A Girl for All Time doll. Most of the AGFAT dolls are gorgeous. I settled on Elinor for my top choice as I realized I don鈥檛 have any redheads. I thought she could portray both a young Princess Elizabeth and a Sarah Bartlemy for my Grace. She may end up time traveling outside the Tudor/Elizabethan period as well. I鈥檓 also drawn to Clementine, Nisha, and Bex.
3) Rahel is a Hearts for Hearts doll. Technically, Nahji nudges her out for top spot but since Nahji was a late Christmas present to myself (via a giftcard), I decided to disqualify her. Other top contenders are Mosi, Tipi, Shola, Nyesha, and Consuelo.
4) Sage is an Our Generation doll. I鈥檝e been considering using her for my Grace doll although I鈥檓 not completely sold on that idea. I think her hair is too blonde to really qualify as mousy. I do love the outfit and accessories she comes with and I鈥檇 pass them onto Marisol and maybe Blaire too if I ever got her. The fact that she鈥檚 taller than Elinor but looks younger would actually end up being fine as Grace is at least two years younger than Sarah but noted to be tall. It鈥檚 unfortunate that they can鈥檛 share clothes but what can you do. I also like Valeria and would love her; she seems to no longer be available though. Others of high interest are Catarina, May Lee, Ayeesha, Suyin, Abril, Suzee, Maricela, Gloria, Savannah (who maybe is a better fit for mousy hair, hard to tell without looking in person but I don鈥檛 picture Grace with blue eyes; she鈥檚 never mentioned with them so I feel it鈥檚 most likely her eyes are brown), Rosalind, Ambreal, Rashida, and Paloma.
5) Kendall is a Wellie Wisher. Pretty self-explanatory. I鈥檝e made a huge list of AG dolls I鈥檓 interested in, elsewhere. Willa I think would be next after Kendall from the Wellies. Historically, I am hoping to get Kaya with my booster money, am picky and so don鈥檛 want the Beforever version of Rebecca, and have no interest in Courtney. Nanea and Melody are the only historical dolls still available from AG I want. I think I won鈥檛 end up getting Corinne, definitely not Gwynn since I have Melissa, my Emerson, and there鈥檚 virtually no difference between them, I like all the World By You girls but I鈥檓 not in any kind of rush to pay AG full price for them. I would get Blaire and Joss but not Kira, I think Blaire isn鈥檛 available anymore though.
6) Zoe is from Carpatina. I forget what I was looking for on the Carpatina website when I was struck by the thought that she would be great as Flavia Gemina of the Roman Mysteries, yet another middle-grade history fave. I also like Julia, Ana Ming, Emma, and Diya.
7) Karima is a Salaam Sisters doll. I find them all cute so I kind of picked Karima at random but looking at the picture of her hair uncovered on the website I thought that maybe she could sometimes portray Pam Crandal from the Pony Pals series, another childhood favorite series. I would also love to have Maryam, Layla, Nura, and Yasmina.
8) Kai is a Girlhood Journeys doll. I learned recently that they sort of rebooted the series and added some more characters but they only made dolls for the first four girls - Juliet, Kai, Marie, and Shannon - from what I understand. I would like to bring home all four Girlhood Journeys girls someday but I really appreciate Kai鈥檚 story as the other three not only have stories I鈥檓 more familiar with but also stories that tend to get more coverage.
9) Rose is a Magic Attic Club doll. I currently have Heather and it鈥檚 truly a toss up as to whether I want Rose or Keisha more. It鈥檒l probably just depend on which I can find for a reasonable price in good condition first. (Alison and Megan are characters I like but somehow there鈥檚 something that gets lost in translation and their dolls don鈥檛 speak to me. I feel the way about Samantha in that I quite like her character but something about AG constantly manufacturing fancy expensive clothes for her and I can鈥檛 quite see that character in the doll. 馃様)聽

I have a strong urge to make doll sized hanfu...
not the style that carpatina has a pattern for, I want to make a qixiong ruqun (altho maybe I'd also make the other one in the future)
I feel like that's vaguely within my ability level??? But then I'm just gonna be even more frustrated that I don't own a #4 馃槀馃槶

Aziraphale at the Bastille Part 1
This costume is going to be a long process so I鈥檓 going to post about it in chunks.聽
I think everyone who watched Good Omens who cares a whit for fashion fell in love with this confection of a costume: the angel Aziraphale in lace and frills and white satin pumps in a French jail, possibly about to be guillotined, until he鈥檚 rescued by a tall, dark demon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(The left two pictures in the second image show the executioner, now wearing Aziraphale鈥檚 wasitcoat and frock coat, after Aziraphale miracled a costume swap.) Close examination of the costume reveals a couple of things: first, it鈥檚 actually kind of shabby-looking, and second, it鈥檚 out of date for 1793; by that time, men鈥檚 waistcoats and frock coats had become much shorter and more svelte, with smaller cuffs and coat fronts that sweep back, exposing more leg. Naturally, that鈥檚 what Crowley is wearing in the scene, though he鈥檚 dressed as more of a plebe than Aziraphale.
Tumblr media
Now, Aziraphale looks a little shabby in modern times -- his waistcoat especially is very worn around the buttons and hem, presumably because it鈥檚 the same one he鈥檚 owned since Victorian times. But I鈥檓 not going to go to all the trouble of making this outfit and make it shabby, so I鈥檓 going to upgrade it when I make it in doll form.
Process photos after the jump.
First, I need a shirt. Again I鈥檓 turning to Thimbles and Acorns via Pixie Faire for the pattern for an 18th Century men鈥檚 shirt and stock. At this time, a man鈥檚 shirt served exactly the same purpose as a woman鈥檚 shift: it was a simple, comfortable, readily washable garment that separated the human (with its attendant grime and odor) from the clothes (which might be made of harsh fabrics and dyes). The tails were very long in order that they could tuck between the legs to act as a sort of underwear. In fact, the shirt was regarded basically as underwear; it was unseemly for more than the cuffs and collar to be visible, and the collar was always held closed with a tied neckcloth called a stock. The basic design of the men鈥檚 shirt remained unchanged for centuries. For those of you who are fans of the 1995 TV version of Pride and Prejudice, this is the garment that Colin Firth goes for a swim in, and for Elizabeth to stumble upon him, post-swim, still clad only in shirt and breeches, was really quite shocking!
Anyway, back to the matter at hand.
Tumblr media
The Thimbles and Acorns pattern is fairly simple with a self-ruffle at the cuffs and neck. For Aziraphale I upgraded the cuffs to two layers of lace, and I added lace ends to the stock. I originally planned to use a very thin cotton batiste but it was just too transparent and was too stiff. So I鈥檓 using a white synthetic fabric of some kind, rayon or nylon or something. It鈥檚 a little staticky but it has a beautiful soft drape.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is a lot of fiddly hand-sewing in these patterns to make facings that cover seams. This is the view through my magnifying lamp while I鈥檓 sewing the facing down over the front neck opening with its self-ruffle.
Tumblr media
Finished shirt, without the buttons and button loops yet.
Tumblr media
The next thing I did was adapt this pattern for Crowley. I have a Crowley doll that is a different type than Aziradoll. Aziradoll is an American Girl, which has a pretty wide, soft body compared to most such dolls. I found on eBay a used doll of a skinnier type, Just Pretend, Inc., with extremely weird pink eyes and red hair. It is roughly the same measurements as more popular skinny 18-inch dolls like Kids N Cats and Carpatina. So I modified the width of the shirt and made a few other changes to convert the pattern to Crowley鈥檚 size. No lacy frills for Crowley; it鈥檚 crisper self-fabric cuffs and stock. The fabric is just a regular acetate lining. It鈥檚 a little shiny, which seems suitable for a flash bastard like Crowley. Here鈥檚 a process photo of those self-fabric cuffs.
Tumblr media
It鈥檚 still loose -- these shirts are supposed to be loose -- but fits the doll pretty well. Here鈥檚 a photo without buttons or stock.
Tumblr media
Next step is breeches. Again, Thimbles and Acorns provides with this pattern for a George Washington military costume. I made the breeches almost straight from the pattern, using a really luscious-feeling crepe-backed satin. (The parts on the left are for a waistcoat, which I鈥檒l post about another day.) The parts for these breeches are weirdly shaped -- these bear no similarity whatever to the cut of modern men鈥檚 trousers.
Tumblr media
I discovered while making these that crepe-backed satin is a pain in the butt to work with. It seems like a very fine fabric, but it鈥檚 made of rather wide warp threads with very thin weft threads, and once cut it really wants to fall apart. It鈥檚 also desperately easy to accidentally pull a little weft thread and create what looks like a run in the fabric. My first assembly attempt ended in failure because the fabric started disintegrating around the tight corner at the junction of the drop front and the trouser leg.
Tumblr media
I cut some new parts and substantially beefed up the interfacing around that seam. I also used a more stable cotton fabric for the invisible inner facings of the drop front and vents. It seems to be holding.
Tumblr media
More assembly pics. Really interesting topologically.
Tumblr media
Leg plackets. The detail in this bit is exquisite. If I ever need to sew a placket on any garment I鈥檓 creating from scratch, I鈥檒l work from this pattern.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Drop front is sorted. It got a little off-center, I鈥檓 actually not at all sure how, but it didn鈥檛 matter in the end.
Tumblr media
Adding the waistband.
Tumblr media
Test fit. The next step after this was the sheer terror of buttonholes. I hate buttonholes. BUT I DID IT.
Tumblr media
At least the terror of sewing buttonholes comes with the pleasure of selecting buttons. After a lot of agonizing (and, I鈥檒l admit, some shopping), I eventually used some vintage pearl and mother-of-pearl buttons for the breeches. They鈥檙e Heavenly.
Tumblr media
That鈥檚 it for shirt and breeches for Aziraphale. I鈥檓 working on the waistcoat, but more urgently, I need to replace those plain brown shoes with some gorgeous satin pumps. I also need to adapt that topologically weird breeches pattern for the smaller Just Pretend doll for Crowley.聽
In the meantime, here are the two Ineffables lounging around in, basically, their underwear. How indecent!

The Making of Sorcha
Forewarning for you....there was one more photo in this set, but I鈥檝e been told a doll head with no eyes is too creepy, so we鈥檙e going to skip a few steps in this process... One of my favorite ways to add new friends to my doll collection is to customize them myself...this particular little Princess was my first full custom (well, that鈥檚 a lie...she鈥檚 my second, but the first was truly an experiment. I didn鈥檛 take process pictures of Sky). She started her life as a beat up second hand Just Like You #3 doll whose hair was cut and very dry and her eyes so scuffed she鈥檇 have been blind.
Tumblr media
First step was actually cleaning her vinyl and her body, the second was adding freckles and a little fresh color to her face, to give her life. This shot is step three...replacing her scuffed and damaged blue eyes with these beautiful Enigma green eyes I bought on Etsy (note to self, find the store). This was not a complete success the first time out and I wound up buying an identical pair of the same eyes to try again, since I broke the first pair completely.
Tumblr media
Step four...releasing the wig (from ZaZou Custom Dolls) from its hairnet and trying it on, it wasn鈥檛 glued down yet in this shot (and if you鈥檙e wondering, E6000 adhesive...tacky glue is preferred if there鈥檚 any chance you might want to take the wig off later, but if I put a wig on my doll and decide to glue that sucker down, it鈥檚 not meant to come off so I use the stronger glue), this was the trial shot. Then I put my phone down and added glue.聽
Hint: Apply your glue directly to the inside of the wig cap, not the doll鈥檚 head. If you put the glue on the head, you will accidentally drag the wig through the glue and have to wash the hair, which, with curly wigs, is not always practical or easy. Glue inside the wig cap, not too close to the edges, you will not get in her hair as easily.
Tumblr media
Then it was time to put her back on her body...on an American Girl from the era Sorcha is from, that鈥檚 easy...she has the string at her neck that allows you to slip her head into her body and pull tight/tie a knot to secure her head to her body. Before I did that, though, I set her head aside for the glue to cure and went to work on tightening her limbs and adding new stuffing...I had to toss the old stuffing when I cleaned her, it smelt a little funny and I had to soak her cloth body to clean it, so I just tossed it. Standard polyfil pillow stuffing will do, and you鈥檒l want a large paint brush handle or knitting needle type thing to push the stuffing into place...takes quite a lot of stuffing for a little doll.
Tumblr media
Et viola, we added the Celtic Princess outfit from Carpatina Dolls to finish the look, and there you have her. Sorcha O鈥橰eilly, Princess of Ireland. Still missing a couple of accessories, but I didn鈥檛 get those done until the following week...
Tumblr media
The final look, complete with her staff, crown and wolf pup. Isn鈥檛 she something?

What are Just Pretend & Carpatina? -@howevercantheafterbe
Just Pretend and Carpatina dolls are all vinyl and slimmer than American Girl dolls, but their heights are comparable. Just Pretend dolls had a short run from 1997 to 2001. The lines were Stardust Classics, Dream Doll Designer, and Friend to Friend. Luckily, Carpatina is still around. The dolls are lovely (though I favor the sleep-eyed originals), and the outfits are quite beautiful and will especially appeal to lovers of historical fantasy. There's also a clothing line for American Girl dolls.
My interest in these dolls is mostly compelled by nostalgia. I long for some things that I missed out on when I was younger.
Thanks for the ask!

Fraser's Ridge, English Crown settlement near Grandfather Mountain*
North Carolina
Jamie is knitting a gift for his nephew, Young Ian. He puts the ribbing for the brim over his head to check that the size is about right.
Tumblr media
One of the Outlander episodes makes a point that in Scottish culture, men and women both knitted. I didn't do any research on this myself, but I know Diana Gabaldon puts a lot of research into her historical fiction.
Tumblr media
*Fraser's Ridge is part of the fictional Outlander world; Grandfather Mountain is a real place. Some of my Scottish ancestors settled near there, which makes the historical fiction Outlander series particularly interesting to me.

I actually just came over to ask if journey girls clothes would fit Heather, and you already answered that a couple asks ago lol
Tumblr media
I鈥檓 answering all of these together since they鈥檙e all Magic Attic related.聽
Journey Girls and Carpatina clothes will fit Magic Attic Dolls. MAC dolls have a waist that鈥檚 about 9.75 inches around, so any clothes close to that measurement will fit them. I鈥檓 not sure about shoes, though, since MAC dolls have long and skinny feet.聽
My Heather came dressed in a probably homemade outfit that didn鈥檛 fit her well and was not my taste, so I cut it up for fabric scraps. I still would love to get her starter outfit one day if I can find it for cheap. A lot of her collection is not really my style and I鈥檓 not going to bother looking for it.聽
I like Heather a lot, she鈥檚 not going anywhere. :)聽
