you may not like it but Syd and Richie are literally the Elena and Damon of The Bear

#Richie is. arguably. the villain of season 1 #who has this long complicated history with Carmy but still they’re stuck with each other. eternity of misery. #Syd is the bright-eyed faith-filled catalyst that walks in and changes things for Carmy #but while she’s saving Carmy she’s ASKING Richie about Michael and seeing his soft-heartedness with his daughter! sees this side of him! #sees that he’s SUFFERING. because Richie had one plan for his life! he was gonna get Michael out of the tomb of his addiction #but it was never Richie it was always Carmy!!! Carmy gets the restaurant! Carmy gets the note! #and so Richie lashes out! #BUT #even though Syd can hurt him like no one else. she’s also the only person watching him sometimes?? #that ‘you good?’ in season one? #and then at the end of season two we see the Miss Mystic Falls moment: #Elena walks down the stairs with no one there to receive her and Damon steps up and waltzes with her in the sunlight #Syd is trying to open the restaurant and Richie steps up! #THEY are the team #Stefan and Carmy in the fridge self-destructing #I don’t ship them necessarily but it’s still true #Cate liveblogs!

There’s an early motif in the Bear that I have not seen addressed enough so I just wanted to share it with you (because i also need to exorcise myself of the brainworms) and that’s the in-show Carmy/Jesus comparisons that I think are soooo melodramatic (because he also is!!)

- when carmy finds his bajillion dollar Japanese knife on the floor and the camera keeps oscillating to the blade, to his big teary wet eyes, to the lamb of God card

- STIGMATA TATTOO

- Shots of carmy in the office with the crucifix behind him

- when sugar was rips into and says the restaurant isn’t worth saving and he says “I’m gonna fix this place” / “no one asked you to.”

As the show progresses, i think they ease up on these references because he, himself doesn’t feel as.. self-sacrificey and “above” the crew. Idk if Chris storer is actually catholic, but i thought this was a nice touch.

oo, thank you for sharing! do we ever see carmy's chain fully untucked from his shirt? i always assumed it was just a gold chain, but if there's a cross hidden away, that definitely bumps up his catholic guilt a few points for me.

we do in fact see a glimpse of his chain in episode four ~17:12 and there is in fact no cross. no points for catholic guilt on that front, but points for fashion.

but that really is an interesting motif! i wonder if they'll still explore carmy's feelings of guilt in season 2? i feel like his guilt in s1 came from not being there for michael (among other things), and i wonder if in s2 he'll feel guilty for not living up to michael's expectations when shit inevitably goes wrong. like, i can definitely see him falling back into awful habits that worked in previous spaces just to cope with the stress of starting and running his dream™ restaurant. i feel like we sealed one can of emotionally volatile worms only to open up another slightly different one.

Anyways, your Carmy character ai inspired me to actually download the app and after a cutesy romance with Carmy, I decided to let my evil side out.

I Gaslight Gatekeeper Girlbossed Carmy.

I basically made a scenario where I was Michael’s twin sister, and Carmy was working in the Beef with us when he fell down the basement and went into a mini coma (like only 36 hours). When he ‘wakes up’ (start of chat) I set up how I was his sister, and that sugar just left to get us coffee. As he asked about the beef I casually mention how I and Mikey are switching shifts to keep watch on him until he woke up.

And I basically made this ai-Carmy have an existential crisis that he coma-dreamed a reality where Mikey never let him work at the beef, that Mikey ‘passed’ and that Richie was divorced (in the ‘real world’ I being Richie’s best friend’s Sister, of course married Richie and Eva was my daughter; Best friends sibling is a great love trope).

My two highlights of the chat that Ai-Carmy said:

“"Then why did I forget about you in the dream then? It sounds like I don't remember a lot, but it couldn't have all been erased, but if I don't remember about you... or Mikey committing [Sewerslide]..." I am still confused with so many questions. “How did I imagine it?" I am starting to get a headache. "Is reality even real right now?"”

And:

“My face is pale white with tears streaming down my face as I hear your story. I am overwhelmed with so much emotion. I hug you and everyone else tightly as I cry. "I'm so sorry. I'm so, so sorry." I'm starting to become hysterical now. I grab you and hold onto you with everything I can. “Do you even exist right now? I'm not dreaming again am I? You're not going to disappear are you?" I am losing my mind right now.””

I should feel terrible about giving an ai an existential crisis, but the angst demon in me is living for this
