From Apple to Disney, Gucci to Shell, many of the largest companies in the world have used carbon credits for their sustainability efforts from the unregulated voluntary market, which grew to $2bn (£1.6bn) in size in 2021 and saw prices for many carbon credits rise above $20 per offset. The credits are often generated on the basis they are contributing to climate change, mitigation such as stopping tropical deforestation, tree planting and creating renewable energy projects in developing countries. Proponents say they need to massively increase in size and scale to help meet the Paris agreement to limit global heating. But repeated scandals about their true impact and a crackdown from regulators on claims of “carbon neutrality” have meant that demand and prices for offsetting have slumped, with signs that some carbon credit traders are writing off investments that would have been worth hundreds of millions of dollars as recently as last year.

A new study in the journal Science has found that millions of forest carbon credits approved by Verra, the world’s leading certifier, are largely worthless and could make global heating worse if used for offsetting. The research by scientists and economists at the University of Cambridge and VU Amsterdam was one of the three studies used in a January investigation into rainforest offsets by the Guardian, Die Zeit and Source Material. The Science study was used in a pre-print form while awaiting peer review, which it has since passed. The analysis, published on Thursday, found that 18 big forest offsetting projects had produced millions of carbon credits based on calculations that greatly inflated their conservation impact. The schemes, which generate credits by avoiding hypothetical deforestation, were found not to reduce forest loss or to reduce it by only small amounts, far less than the huge areas they were claiming to protect, rendering the credits largely hot air. The findings follow a 2020 study of 12 projects in the Brazilian Amazon by the same group, which found they had a negligible impact on stopping deforestation despite generating credits on the basis they were preventing large areas from being destroyed. A 2022 study of 40 Verra-approved projects led by University of Cambridge researchers found that while some projects did stop deforestation, most stopped none or small amounts.

The mess inside the house was the last of my worries when I unlocked my mailbox and saw what had been delivered while I was gone. It was deja vu right down to the brown 100% recycled paper envelope that promised it was sustainable and carbon neutral. I flipped it over and saw the same return address of the London lawyer that Trent had used nearly three years ago and my stomach turned.

“Addie, can you show Pierre the house? I just need to make an important phone call.”

Addie didn’t give Pierre a chance to ask me what was wrong as she grabbed his hand and marched him inside my renovated bungalow. Granny had been perplexed when I brought the single storey fixer upper and offered to buy me something bigger and newer but I loved the character it held and there was more than enough space for the two of us. Addie and I had made the place our sanctuary and I wished I could take the house with us when we moved.

“Hey mum,” I choked when she answered the phone. “I think I need your help.”

“What is it, mija?” She asked as I took a seat at the desk in my study and tore through the envelope to see the court summonings.

“Assault,” I gasped as I skimmed over the details. “I’m being charged with assaulting that bastard Trent Gordon!”

“Hijo de puta,” mum swore and I heard something sounding suspiciously like a door being slammed shut. “Send me through the documents and I’ll make some calls. I wouldn’t worry too much, mija, I’m sure this can be settled out of court.”

“Alright,” I sighed and looked at the framed photo on my desk from the day Addie was born. I had never been more afraid than in that moment but as soon I looked at her something snapped into place and I knew I would do anything for her.

A shadow across my wall alerted me to Pierre’s presence and I cleared my throat of the emotion that had tightened it. Pierre walked into my study and picked up a 3D printed, fully functioning A523 replica I had used for my final paper and he looked at the precise details of the miniature version of his race car as he leant against my desk. He mindlessly spun the wheel with his fingers as he waited for me, resting his hip against my desk.

“Let me know what you figure out. Te amo, mama.”

“Yo también te amo.”

I hung up the call and placed my phone on the desk beside my MacBook that I hadn’t opened since I submitted my final paper last month. I didn’t say anything as I traded the documents for the racecar and his eyebrows shot up after the first sentence.

“Is this serious?” he asked. “You have a restraining order against him. Shouldn’t he be the one in court?”

“Mum’s going to look into it, I don’t really know anything about all that. She took care of everything last time.” I massaged my temples and let out a defeated sigh. “All I want is a few days where I don’t have to deal with any shit. I feel like all I’ve done for the last three years is run from one fire to the next. I’m so fucking tired, Pierre.”

“Oh, mon amour,” Pierre murmured as he swivelled my chair around and he knelt between my knees, his hands running soothing lines up and down my legs. “You were doing that all by yourself, but not anymore. Everything will workout in the end.”

“And if it’s not okay, it’s not the end?” I finished for him.

Pierre chuckled. “Otmar has a lot of useful sayings.”

“That one he stole from John Lennon. But thank you.” I leaned forward and stole a much needed kiss from him before Addie danced into the room wanting to go to brunch. “Okay, I’ll just send this to Abuela then we can go. Did you give Pierre a tour of the house?”

She nodded proudly.

“She showed me where to leave my bag, in the guest room,” Pierre chuckled. “Has your gym ever been used? I think there was still protective wrap on the machines.”

“Not really, I made a passing comment about losing the baby weight to Granny after Addie was born and then the next day my rumpus room was Betty-fied. I only use the treadmill for physio,” I turned to Addie and took her hand. “Sweetie, Pierre’s going to be staying in my room.”

“With you?”

“I should hope so.”

She tilted her head as she looked between us and asked, “why?”

“Well, um, because he’s my boyfriend.”

“Oh, like when Rienhardt sleeps over.”

“No,” I said with a laugh as Pierre looked at me. “Reinhardt is Addie’s friend from pre-school.”

“He’s a boy.”

“Yes and he’s your friend, I know what you mean. But the relationship Pierre and I have is very different.”

“Okaaaay…” Her confusion pinched her brows together and pursed her lips but she let it drop.

“You’ll understand one day.”

We left it at that and went to put on our shoes so we could walk through the park to Ivy Cafe. There were quite a few groups of uni students out enjoying the sunshine before the next semester started and a few familiar faces waved to Addie as we walked along. She was always more sociable than me and had made friends with almost all the locals while we were out and about.

One group of young men had used their shoes to set up a makeshift goal and were playing a friendly match of football. The ball went flying and missed the goal by a mile as it hurtled towards us but Pierre stepped in and caught it on his chest. My boobs ached at the thought of even trying that but he didn’t feel anything as he controlled the ball at his feet and kicked it back.

“Thanks, bruv,” one called back before he stopped mid stride and pointed at him. “You ain’t that Formula One driver, right?” I laughed at the question and Pierre shrugged casually. “No way, come have a game, my man.”

“Go on,” I said before he could even think about declining it, because I knew he would be thinking about Addie and not what he wanted to do. We could wait a few more minutes without it being the end of the world. “As your personal trainer for the week, I insist, go do your cardio.”

The guys introduced themselves quickly for the five-aside match of shirts vs skins and I saw the crowd of spectators growing when Pierre was on the skins team and took his shirt off, handing it over to me with a wink before jogging off to his team.

The game had a fast pace and Addie was completely enthralled with it, cheering loudly every time Pierre had the ball. She wasn’t the only one I found when I looked around and saw all the women with their phones out capturing Pierre as he dribbled the ball down the field. His leg drew back as he neared the goal and we all held our breath as he took his aim.

The park was silent as his foot connected and the ball went flying, the keeper diving just a little too late. A round of girlish cheers nearly deafened me and Addie jumped up and down clapping as Pierre punched the air and accepted the handshakes that every male universally seemed to know.

He said he needed to get going and grinned at the round of groans and disputes before leaving his new friends and jogging his way back to us.

“We might have to change your name to Pierry Henry,” I teased as I reluctantly gave him his shirt back. “Do you play a lot of football?”

“Not as much as I’d like, but I sometimes have a kick around with Charles.” He pulled on his shirt and took back his phone and wallet before Addie asked to be carried and he put her on his shoulders. “Do you want to play when you grow up, princesse?” She nodded her head enthusiastically and he grinned up at her. “We can practise together.”

Our evening was rather quiet, which was a very nice change. Addie and I had left Pierre at home to do his workout while we went grocery shopping and then she helped me make dinner. By the time the meal was ready Pierre had emerged from my room after taking a shower and he inhaled the mouthwatering scent that filled the kitchen.

“Looks delicious,” he said as kissed my temple and plucked an olive from the greek salad. He tossed it in the air and caught it in his mouth, earning an impressed clap from Addie who then tried to copy him only to miss completely. “Oops, so close. Maybe that wasn’t the best idea.”

“Just don’t start juggling knives in front of her.” I picked up the olive that landed at my feet and tossed it in the trash. “Or at all,” I clarified just to be sure, given the cheeky grin he gave me.

“Can you read to me?” Addie asked Pierre after he finished washing the dishes while I dried.

The plate slipped in my hand and I barely caught it before it fell to the benchtop. She had always asked me to read to her, even when her grandparents were around, it was always our thing. A small part of me was almost mourning the loss of the role but a much larger part was happy that she felt comfortable enough to break from the routine and trust Pierre to put her to bed.

“Of course, princesse. Why don’t you go choose a story while I finish up here?”

She started to run down the hall when I called out to her, “And brush your teeth too.”

She made a non-committal sound but I heard the creaky door to the main bathroom open before the taps turned on.

“She’s going to choose the biggest book just so she can stay up longer,” I warned Pierre as he passed me the last dish.

“It’s a solid strategy but my nephews say I’m a boring storyteller so she might just fall asleep as soon as I start talking.”

I laughed as I put the last plate away and wiped away the suds that clung to Pierre’s arm hairs. “I like your stories, plus, kids can be absolutely ruthless and they don’t even know it.”

“Addie’s not, she’s sweet.”

I grinned and stepped into his arms. “You’re sweet.”

His lips curved up into a devilish smile. “I think you're sweet? But I’m suffering from memory loss so I’ll have a taste of you later to check.”

“You better hurry up and tell the world’s most boring story so she goes to sleep quickly then.” I gave him a small nudge towards the hallway and he left, looking back over his shoulder as he reached her bedroom door to send me a wink that held a promise of what was to come.

If I recall correctly, you aren't a fan of the Green New Deal. What problems do you have with it specifically? I don't think it is a secret or a hot take to suggest that the United States needs to invest more in renewable clean energy to combat global warming (more like mitigate it). But what about the details of the GND do you have an issue with?

If all it ever did was chart a method to carbon neutrality or carbon-negative power generation, that would be one thing. It doesn't do that, it's a policy as grandiose as it is threadbare. What little we have is very weak on substance, ignores a great deal of substantive and effective environmental reforms (carbon taxation, adjustable border rates) and carbon-neutral energy generation (nuclear power), and devotes massive spending to policies that are politically unworkable and do little if anything to help reduce carbon emissions. In short, the GND is a deeply unserious proposal from deeply unserious people.

My problem is that the economic underpinnings of the proposals outlined in the GND rely on MMT, which is fringe economic pseudoscience. It rests on a misunderstanding of fiat currency and has a long track record of its concepts not panning out in practice. It's central premise of currency valuation being fixed due to its utility in the satisfaction of public debt (taxation), is invalidated for the fact that currency is often used in the satisfaction of private debt (purchasing of goods and services between consumer and seller) due to its utility as a convenient medium - hence why when more money is printed, prices rise in the form of inflation, to maintain the currency's utility in the satisfaction of private debt. While L. Randall Wray might argue that there is no "simple proportionate relationship exists between rises in the money supply and rises in the general price level," history and the economic present handily rebut this thesis. Printing money doesn't change overall supply, and so prices adjust to compensate for the eroded worth of currency; this has been proven time and time again. We've seen what elevated inflation rates do to countries that feel their sting - they reduce climate targets and restart coal energy to boost energy production to reduce energy costs and stave off domestic discontent. Moreover, the idea of a 10-year national mobilization will simply fail to sustain itself when inflationary pressures force a change of government and the project is cancelled, which means a whole lot of wasted time and wasted resources on a vanity project. As long as this pseudoscience continues to dominate their thinking, I must accept that GND proponents are an obstacle to substantive climate reform.

The BMW Group is commencing production of its BMW iX5 Hydrogen model. Manufacture of the small-series hydrogen-powered vehicle is taking place in the pilot plant at its Munich Research and Innovation Centre (FIZ). The first ever Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) featuring hydrogen fuel cell technology has already completed an intensive programme of testing under demanding conditions during the development phase and will now be used as a technology demonstrator for locally carbon-free mobility in selected regions from spring 2023.

“Hydrogen is a versatile energy source that has a key role to play as we progress towards climate neutrality,” says Frank Weber, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Development. “We are certain that hydrogen is set to gain significantly in importance for individual mobility and therefore consider a mixture of battery and fuel cell electric drive systems to be a sensible approach in the long term. Fuel cells don’t require any critical raw materials such as cobalt, lithium or nickel either, so by investing in this type of drive system we are also strengthening the geopolitical resilience of the BMW Group. Our BMW iX5 Hydrogen test fleet will allow us to gain new and valuable insights, enabling us to present customers with an attractive product range once the hydrogen economy becomes a widespread reality.”

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is being built in the BMW Group’s pilot plant at its Research and Innovation Centre in Munich. This is the interface between development and production where every new model from one of the company’s brands is made for the first time. Around 900 people work there in the body shop, assembly, model engineering, concept vehicle construction and additive manufacturing. They each work on up to six vehicle projects simultaneously and are tasked with ensuring that both the product and the manufacturing process are ready for series production. In the case of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, specialists in hydrogen technology, vehicle development and initial assembly of new models have been working closely together to integrate the cutting-edge drive and energy storage technology.

“Production of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen and the BMW-developed fuel cell systems demonstrates our supreme flexibility and unrivalled know-how in the field of small-scale manufacture,” remarks Milan Nedeljković, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Production. “It shows we already boast the necessary expertise for integrating hydrogen technology into the BMW iFACTORY production system as an additional type of drive.”

BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the USA supplies the base vehicles for the hydrogen model, which has been developed on the platform of the BMW X5. They are fitted with a new floor assembly in the pilot plant’s body shop that makes it possible to accommodate the two hydrogen tanks in the centre tunnel and under the rear seat unit. The model-specific 12V and 400V electrical systems, high-performance battery, electric motor and fuel cell are all integrated during the assembly stage, alongside standard production parts. Positioned in the rear axle area together with the high-performance battery, the electric motor is a product of the current, fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology also employed in battery electric and plug-in hybrid models from BMW. The fuel cell systems located under the bonnet of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen have been manufactured at BMW’s in-house competence centre for hydrogen in Garching to the north of Munich since August this year.

Numerous components are produced exclusively for the hydrogen-powered SAV, including some made at the Additive Manufacturing Campus – the BMW Group’s competence centre for 3D printing – which also forms part of the pilot plant. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen passes through all the customary stages of production, starting at the body shop then proceeding to the paint shop and assembly before ending with a final inspection of each individual vehicle. Following this, every vehicle undergoes a comprehensive operational check at the BMW Group’s test centre in Aschheim.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen combines all the benefits of a locally emission-free drive system with outstanding everyday usability and long-distance capabilities. This makes its hydrogen fuel cell technology an attractive complementary alternative to the battery electric drive system. This is especially true for customers for whom short refuelling stops and long ranges are a must, as well as for regions still lacking an adequate charging infrastructure.

iii. BIO

fallon is the only child of mars jacobs and lilith jacobs who were both part of new york city's socialite scene. on the cusp of fallon's fifth birthday mars woke up to find lilith gone without a trace. mars filed a police report for his missing wife, but the case went cold after a few years of searching.

fallon grew up very close with her father, and, thanks to her very involved grandmother, unknowingly became a carbon copy of her mother. she did everything lilith did growing up, from competitive ballet to attending one of new york's most prestigious academys.

she constantly felt pressure to perform and fit into the mold set for her by her family. she was good at being what everyone else wanted her to be until she was fifteen and experienced her first crush on a girl. fortunately, her father knew she was gay even before she did and has been nothing but accepting, but fallon has still not come out publicly due to fear of her sexuality tarnishing her reputation.

at seventeen she left school to work full-time for the american ballet theater where she danced for six years. she would have stayed with the company longer, but she was dropped by her dance partner and experienced an ankle stress fracture. it might have healed properly, but fallon refused to take a break from the company and ended up being dismissed from the company in 1985.

fallon spent the next year of her life interning for her grandmother and her cosmetic company. it was in her grandmother's office she discovered a hidden folder listing all of the research into her missing mother's case. the file revealed that her mother had actually been found back in 1966. she worked as an employee in a lab at a place called hawkins. the file revealed she worked there for ten years before checking into pennhurst asylum, where she died two years later. lilith had stayed in contact with fallon's grandmother, a series of letter dictating the rambles of a seemingly mad woman as she described kids with supernatural abilities and strange experiments.

feeling betrayed by her grandmother's lives, and longing to learn about the mother who left her, fallon left new york and headed to hawkins where she got a job as a jazzercise instructor at a local mall, but she spends her free time investigating the strange happenings in hawkins and comparing them to her mother's letters in hopes of proving her mother's sanity.

iv. PERSONALITY

on the surface, fallon is your typical #meangirl. she grew up learning that reputation is everything, and what people think of you matters far more than what you think of yourself. because of that, she has curated a perfect image for herself, from her shiny blonde hair to her perfect physique.

her sharp tongue is her biggest defense mechanism for her insecurity. she only has ever known how to be what other people want her to be, and so she isn't sure who she is outside of the new york social scene. she's scared if she shows her more geeky traits, or is open about her sexuality that she will not be taken seriously.

because she is so used to trying to gauge what people want from her, fallon has become incredibly observant, almost to a fault. she has a quick mind and can easily see other's insecurities before they might even be aware themselves. she will use these insecurities as a weapon if she feels threatened, but to those she slowly lets in she will often do subtle things to try and uplift them.

v. HEADCANONS

fallon is an excellent bakery. as a kid she found her mother's old baking recipes and became obsessed with learning them. she turns to baking when she is upset and will often force cupcakes onto people to try and clear out her kitchen. she secretly dreams of owning a bakery, but would never tell anyone.

she is a huge comic book fan. her father used to read comics with her before bed and they became obsessed, but she stopped telling people about her love of comics after a couple of girls made fun of her in the second grade. she still visits the comic book shop every week in a baseball hat to get the latest issues.

her favorite super hero is spider-man and she has a crush on mary jane

she has a pit bull named samson. she adopted him after he was having trouble getting adopted due to his inexplainable hatred towards men. fallon felt they were kindred spirits and treats him like a king.

fallon has never had a serious relationship. she used to sleep around new york city and fool around with some of the other dancers, but whenever anyone approached her for anything more than a physical relationship she would run. she doesn't ever want anyone to leave her mother did.

she is a terrible singer, but she will sing if she has too much tequila
