But yeah, I was interested to see what a really Quality group sounded like. I wasn’t really expecting much, I was expecting something very catchy but kinda bland, like a lot of American pop is. I was also expecting something a little exploitative because of just the nature of having a group of “idols”, and I’d heard stuff about the kpop industry that wasn’t pleasant.

And like, I listened to Hi High (which was the top result at the time. i got into them about a week before Butterfly), and I liked it at first. I wasn’t ready to let myself love it, though. In the back of my mind there was that voice saying “lol what are you doing, you are not the target audience for this, i should keep this to myself cause it’s embarrassing. if i admit that i’m listening to kpop right now i’ll be laughed at haha”. But still, it was catchy as hell and I liked that. The video production was sooooo good too, that video looks like a movie.

I watched Egoist too cause I guess it was the top related video, and I thought that song was pretty good, but idk I guess a lot of it just didn’t like sink in or something? I don’t really know. I listened to some others but didn’t find anything that stood out, I think there was a point just before Butterfly released where I liked Hi High, Egoist, and Love Cherry Motion (though I was kinda iffy on that one). I remember talking to my friend Jaci about them cause I know Jaci’s a kpop fan, and they said that they were kinda into Loona but not especially, though Heart Attack is one of the best kpop songs ever made. After hearing that, I listened to Heart Attack, but I didn’t really like it, it was a bit too bubblegummy for me, I guess.

Then Butterfly came out, and by then I knew most of the members by name (not all), and I had watched videos from people like formoftherapy about the songs I had heard and so I felt better about liking kpop cause the illusion of it being completely shallow was shattered. Butterfly didnt wow me at first... I liked the video a lot but the song was kinda eh. The “wings, wings” in the chorus stuck out to me in a bad way lol, I didn’t like that.

So anyway, by then I was like huh, I’m gonna check out some more stuff. So I listened to groups like Momoland and Blackpink and Red Velvet. And by listened to, I mean really just kinda one song from each of those. I listened to other Momoland songs after Bboom Bboom and they didnt really do anything for me. I listened to Red Velvet songs besides Peekaboo and they were okay, Russian Roulette was pretty good but not something that really wowed me, but I was super super super into Blackpink for about a week there haha. I don’t know, I really liked Ddu-Du Ddu-Du, and I liked the members a lot. They’re only four members, so it was really easy to get into them. I listened to more of their songs though and at first I liked them, but the more I listened, the more I realized how bad they are lol. The members themselves are fine but god, some of the other Blackpink songs besides that one are just really bad. To me, anyway. And I think that’s when I realized... oh... Loona’s really something unique, huh?

Like, listening to other groups made me like Loona more hahaha. That’s when everything started to click with me. Songs that didnt impress me at first, like Girl Front and Favorite and especially Heart Attack started REALLY clicking with me. Suddenly every song I listened to from them I liked. And I was noticing things in their songs that I didn’t notice at first. And like, that’s also when it hit me... oh, it’s not just that Grimes did a feature in the intro to one of their songs, they actually take a lot of inspiration from Grimes musically. Aaaaaand that was the nail in the coffin. See, I was one of the biggest Grimes fans alive before we all collectively realized she’s kind of a shitty person. So, to see the good aspects of her music translated and adapted and iterated on by another group is cool. It also kinda made me facepalm because like god fucking damn it, I thought I was free of Grimes, turns out even when I get into something I thought was totally separate, nope... I can’t escape haha. Then though I started noticing interesting and experimental-ish production EVERYWHERE in their songs.

And that’s when I’m like okay... I gotta finally go through and watch all their videos in order. I knew bits and pieces about the Loonaverse already, so I was ready to sink my teeth in and see it all for myself. It takes about 2 hours to watch all their music videos but it’s really worth it, that was a cool experience haha. The next day, I watched some of formoftherapy’s reactions to doing that same marathon too, and that helped me notice and appreciate even more things, especially about the music video production, since that’s what they specialize in talking about.

And then you know, two or so weeks later, here we are, and I’m all in, haha. It’s wild to think that I thought Egoist was pretty good and Heart Attack was not really my cup of tea at first haha. Egoist now blows me away EVERY time I watch that video... the song is sooooooo good and the video is maybe their best and most cohesive video aesthetically and thematically speaking. Heart Attack is also in my top 5 songs now.. so is Butterfly haha, that song grew on me a lot too. It helps for Butterfly that the choreo and video are so artistic and masterful.

Oh, also, one last thing, in the part where I mention other groups... I don’t wanna knock Red Velvet at all. I love Red Velvet. I could write a separate post about my journey with their music too, and how there was a moment when their songs also started clicking for me, and I think they’re just as adventurous and eccentric as Loona. I like Loona more cause I’m more personally invested, and I think Loona covers a broader range of styles and themes and stuff, but Red Velvet are really, really good. I cannot overstate that lol. Also, there are other groups and songs I’ve gotten into since then too, I’m not just a fan of two groups lol. Though to be honest, if I had to pick the ones that I think are doing something really interesting and stand out from the crowd, I think there’s only three groups I would call myself a die hard fan of, and that’s Loona, Red Velvet, and Fromis_9 (who have sooo much potential, im excited to see where they go).

Cause like, it’s cool how this type of thing can happen. It was cool to watch myself start to allow myself to really get into it. I could feel myself getting more and more into it but I was embarrassed about that and I thought it was really lame of me haha. I don’t mean that I was sad or scared or whatever, again, I just thought it was really lame haha. But I mean, deep down I thought it was cool, and the more I got into it, the more that became the only way I thought of it. And now I just think it’s really worth checking out and like not all that lame at all. There are lame groups, yeah. It’s just cool that Loona isn’t one of those. I didn’t expect that the one I heard the most about was 1. not even close to the most popular, and 2. really deeply musically interesting and risktaking, and that’s something that’s always appealed to me about the music I like. Who knew that Loona of all groups would be like that lol. You know... Loona. From the “Stan Loona” memes. Huh.

games these days are being released as incomplete games and it's so annoying

new world - lack of content, bugs from start to end, clunky gameplay, general lack of anything to explore as an exploration game. even as a buy to play mmo that will receive content updates in future, the amount of content on release is just disappointing. theres even less to do when compared with wow's shadowlands, which is not a lot. in terms of variety for wow, run these 8 dungeons for the best gear, these 2 dungeons for 1 piece of legendary gear, and farm this map for xyz currency. and then theres raid and thats about it. do this for more than a year. players are definitely not bored. /s

and in new world, wheres the story? who actually are these npcs? do they have a story? (probably not) the creatures i see in level 1 are the same as the ones i see at level 60, the towns mostly have the same aesthetic and layout (though first light was pretty nice), there are about maybe 40 quests in total and only 2 types of quest. kill or fetch. when i compare it to guild wars 2, a game i played during launch - almost every npc has a dialogue that tells a story of why theyre there, each area has a different biome and different variety of creatures, combat and movement was smooth, the economy works (unless you died a lot, rip gold lol) not that there wasnt any bugs, but you could tell it's a complete game with a large variety of things to do. world exploration (which wasnt boring at the time), jumping puzzles, pvp, wvw, personal story, gathering/crafting, achievement hunting, dungeons, rp. there were secrets in different maps to discover and everything, it was great

age of empires 4 - game breaking bugs, yet to add in basic features that's expected from a 20 year old esports genre. compared to other rts games such as starcraft or even with its own series age of empires 2, the controls are so different and so janky, and you cant even change it. what happened to the UI principle of standardising your controls so your users will be more comfortable and familiar with your application? at the very least i'd expect them to appeal to the AoE 2 fans and make it similar.

i was trying to watch a replay of one of my games yesterday, and turns out i cant rewind or skip forward. i have to rewatch the entire match at 8x speed at most, just to 'rewind'. the stats shown during the replay arent even what i was looking for. if you want to see the villager count for a specific person, you have to click on a drop down box, select person, mouse over their population... i dont play rts games much but isnt this like a basic stat i should be able to see at a glance? same for military count, i cant compare mine against others, i have to click though every single player to see how much military units they have. also replay is quite buggy but meh. it's not worse than the rus bug. easy to exploit, game breaking, and will only be fixed in a month. i had a game where my enemy had probably more than 20 relics (only 5 spawned in that match), and more than 100k gold while everyone else had 10kish or less. who knows if the report button even works right now, the guy is still playing the game.

but sure, it's not incomplete i guess? it's just missing some very basic features in a hardcore rts game (or any game at all because the controls are soooo janky. cant even use escape to exit screens). im not sure if any competitive players would want to invest their time and continue playing it.

back for blood - 4 acts for 70 sgd, can be finished within 2 or 3 sessions. quality game but lacking so much content for its cost. possibly adding more content in future, who knows if it comes as a dlc. and since this is not an mmo, it's a strange way of selling their game. either way for 70 dollars.. it's really not worth it. even if the gameplay and content is pretty high quality, it really feels like i blew my money away because theres so little content. if theyre releasing their story bit by bit.. i'd consider that as incomplete because of the cost. like wtf 70 dollars is like all my meals for a week.

i just feel like the standards of whats considered a newly released game is dropping fast. what is the lowest quality gamers expect from game companies? because thats what we will get. the industry will grab what they can get, i mean its not uncommon for game companies to exploit their workers, why not the customers next?

Some Thoughts on the Cost of Eating Out

A few weeks ago, I found myself in a situation where I was really hungry but there werent many food options around. I decided to keep my costs as low as possible, so I went into the only restaurant I could find, a nice little diner. I want to be clear during this article that I am not picking on this diner. It was a nice place to eat, the service was good, the food was good, and I was happy with it. At the diner, I ordered an extremely simple breakfast. I had a cup of coffee, some scrambled eggs, some fried potatoes, and two pieces of toast. The total bill was about $10 really, not that bad and then I left a $2 tip, so the cost was $12. During the meal, though, I couldnt help but calculate the costs in the back of my head. I was served roughly three scrambled eggs with a little bit of cheese on them, probably a single potatos worth of fried potatoes, two cups of coffee, and two pieces of toast with maybe a teaspoon of butter between them. So, lets look at the ingredient list of that meal: + three eggs + 1/4 cup shredded cheese + 1/2 potato + a small amount of onion in with the potatoes + two slices of bread + roughly a tablespoon of butter + two cups of black coffee + a negligible amount of salt and pepper I could assemble those ingredients into a breakfast at home in about the same time it took them to get breakfast out to me at that restaurant, and then Id have a few items that would go in the dishwasher afterwards. So, what would the ingredients have cost me? + I can get a dozen eggs for $1.99, so three eggs cost $0.50. + I can get eight cups of shredded cheese at the local grocery store for $5, so 1/4 cup of shredded cheese would cost $0.16. + A typical potato weighs about 12 ounces and Id estimate that I had half of a potato on my plate, and a pound of potatoes these days comes in around $1, so the potatoes cost about $0.38. + The small amount of onion was probably $0.05. + I can get a loaf of 20 slices of bread for about $2.50, so two slices cost $0.25. + I can get a stick of butter for about $0.75 and that contains 8 tablespoons, so a tablespoon of butter costs about $0.09. + I can make two cups of coffee at home for about $0.70 using my usual coffee making technique. + Well add on another $0.10 for seasonings like salt and pepper. The total cost of those ingredients is $2.23. Even if you might quibble with the cost of each item and think that it would be more than I stated, youd be hard pressed to get this over $3 unless you went very high end with each item. As I noted earlier, I think my time investment would have been similar if I prepared and ate this meal at home, though I would have been busy in the kitchen for 15 minutes instead of reading the menu, ordering, and staring at my phone for 15 minutes waiting on the food. However, that effort would have saved me about $10. The meal quality probably would have been pretty similar, but Im pretty sure I would have at least liked my coffee at home better. Im kind of picky about coffee and I really like my home brew recipe. This experience reminded me of a few key principles of food frugality (and taught me a few things as well). Eating out consistently is a very expensive endeavor. When you compare a meal prepared at home and a meal eaten out of similar quality, the meal eaten out will always be more expensive. When you eat out, youre not only paying someone to prepare it for you and someone to serve it to you and often someone to clean up for you and someone to manage those folks, youre also paying for the facilities to make and serve the food, the taxes, and some profit for the person who invested all the money to pay for all of these things. Sure, you can sometimes find a decent meal at a restaurant thats less expensive than a great meal at home, or a low quality meal at a restaurant thats less expensive than a good meal at home, but youre taking a serious cut in quality, and if you apply any sort of frugal planning and use low cost food staples at home, a restaurant is never going to consistently beat or even come close to the low cost of preparing food at home. I was really paying for convenience, not the food. When I went to that restaurant, my focus was on getting a decent meal relatively quickly. It seemed to be the fastest option available to me at the moment, and thus I was really paying for convenience rather than the food itself. Thats often a big consideration when people eat out. They do so because theyre hungry and theyre not near any options for preparing food themselves or to acquire low cost and quick to eat items. There are many places in America where the only convenient options for food are convenience stores and fast food restaurants, even in places where you might not expect this to be true. Situations where you need to spend for the sake of convenience are often prevented by better preparation. Whenever you find yourself in a situation where youre turning to a restaurant or a convenience store not because you want a nice meal on a special occasion, but because you need to do so out of convenience, its usually because either you didnt plan ahead at all or youre in a crisis moment. An emergency is understandable, but many meals that people eat out do so solely because they didnt plan ahead when they knew that there was a good chance that they might need to eat a quick meal or a hearty snack in a convenient way. There are a lot of ways to prepare for those kinds of situations, where you need a quick, convenient meal. You can make a lot of meals at home in advance so that you have items that can be popped in the microwave or oven at your convenience. You can use a slow cooker for a lot of meals. You can mostly prepare meals in advance, leaving only final assembly for busy evenings. You can prepare sack lunches to take with you. Or you can do this: I could have prepared better by keeping more food items in my bag. My favorite technique for keeping hunger at bay when Im out and about is to have a few food items in my backpack, which is pretty much always with me when I leave the house for more than a few minutes. Its because I didnt do this that I wound up in that Im hungry, theres no other food options, time to go to a restaurant situation. My routine should be that if I know Im going out and about soon, I make sure that my bag has some food items in it, just in case. Toss in an apple, some granola bars, a water bottle, a bag of nuts, maybe some crackers or something. The key is to just have something thats low cost and easy to eat in my bag. In fact, I usually have several granola bars and/or protein bars in my bag all the time for situations just like this one, but Id consumed them all over the previous few weeks and there was nothing in my bag. Eating out should be an experience you cant recreate at home. The meal I ate was perfectly fine, but it was one that I ate solely for convenience. It wasnt a special experience or a memorable experience. In fact, I probably would have forgotten about it had I not planned on writing this post. It would have become a forgotten $10 expense, the kind of lost $10 that ends up paving the road to financial struggles. The best financial approach to food that Ive found is to eat meals mostly prepared at home and mostly made out of low-cost staples and only eat out (or have treats) on genuinely special occasions. Its easy to learn how to cook a ton of great meals with low cost staples, especially if you have a reasonably well stocked pantry. On the other hand, special occasions are usually best when theyre really meaningful youre eating with someone special or its a truly special occasion and when theyre planned in advance so you can anticipate it. I have far more financial concern about a $15 meal from a restaurant three or four times a week than a $75 meal at a restaurant once every month or two. Check Out These Red-Hot Closed End Technology Funds (EOS)

And today Im going to show you two funds that invest in these companies while offering higher dividends than any of these stocks pay individually. Of course, everyone has heard of Facebook, Apple and Google. (And in case you missed it, my colleague Brett Owens revealed five individual tech stocks he likes now on June 19.) But hardly anyone has heard of either of these high-yielding tech funds. Im talking about the BlackRock Science and Technology Trust (BST) and the Eaton Vance Enhanced Equity Income II (EOS), which yield 5.2% and 7.1%, respectively. Those names dont exactly roll off the tongue, but their performance in 2017 demands respect. Both funds have beaten Microsoft so far this year, and BlackRocks fund has also topped Apple and Alphabet: Tech Is Soaring

These funds strong 2017 showing is no surprise because both are heavily invested in FAAMG stocks. In fact, about a quarter of each fund is dedicated to FAAMG:

As for the rest of their portfolios, BST is a tech fund, so it also has VSTOXX major investments in Alibaba (BABA), Avago Technologies (AVGO) and Salesforce (CRM), while also putting nearly 5% of its cash in Visa (V) and Mastercard (MA). That makes sense, considering that both of these companies have invested in mobile payments and e-commerce for years. In fact, you could consider BST much more of a FAAMG pure play than the Eaton Vance fund. Not only is BST a tech fund, its top five holdings are FAAMG stocks. EOS, on the other hand, has more Visa shares than Apple or Microsoft, and it also diversifies into biopharma firms like Celgene Corporation (CELG) and Allergan (AGN). Which Fund to Choose You could buy both of these funds, enjoy a hefty income stream, get a bunch of FAAMG and other high-quality stocks and call it a day. But if you really want to secure your portfolio from a downturn, I encourage you to look a little closer. And it may surprise you to hear that the better fund to buy is the one with the lower yield: the BlackRock Science and Technology Trust. First, lets look at BSTs discount to net asset value (NAV), an area that plenty of investors fail to pay enough attention to. Remember that CEFs often trade at a price lower than the actual value of the assets within the fundsomething very different from mutual funds, which always trade at their NAV. Of course, a lot of investors will want to buy the EOS fund because it pays a bigger dividend7.1% is, of course, much more attractive than 5.2%. But this would be a mistake. If we look at both funds annualized returns since inception, BST is the clear winner, destroying EOSs rather pathetic 2.8% return, even though both funds have about the same management fee:

Of course, EOSs history includes the Great Recession and the stock implosion during that period. But EOSs history also includes 201213, when FAAMG stocks exploded in value. But that isnt the main reason why I prefer BST. When the fund first came on the scene, its market performance was pretty much the same as that of EOSit didnt show any indication that it was anything special. Then, in the middle of 2016, something incredible happened: BST took off while EOS floundered, and it has continued to soar since then: BlackRock Breaks Away

How did BlackRock do it? Savvy management. The fund managers focused the portfolio on tech outperformers and carefully sought out opportunities while EOSs portfolio saw relatively little improvement. Thats on management, and BST has proven its brain trust is doing a lot more to earn its fee than that of EOS. Of course, a lot of investors wont look that closelyor theyll just focus on the bigger dividend payout from EOS. That shortsightedness will cause problems in the future. EOS has cut its dividend three times in its history. If it faces another major downturn, it will likely cut the payout again, making that 7% dividend suddenly seem a lot less attractive. Dont Fall for This False Choice Why choose between a fund with a 5.2% yield and great management and a 7% player with weak management when we can have both? Im talking about a 7.6% average dividend from 4 of the sharpest management teams in the CEF space. In fact, the all-star team at one of these funds is so sharp they rebounded from the 2008 crash far more quickly than the market and they did it by paying out a fat 7% dividend the whole time!

Thats not even the best partthey turned out this incredible performance by investing in real estate. You read that right: the very thing that caused the collapse in the first place! If this isnt a fund worth paying a premium for, I dont know what is. But heres the thing: thanks to the wacky mispricings in CEF land, this ones trading at a discount to NAV thats far wider than its long-term average. The bottom line? Im fully expecting easy 20% upside here, on top of this funds juicy 7.8% payout! Kimbal Musk takes the tech entrepreneur ethos and applies it to food

The younger brother of Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla Motors, shares his same entrepreneurial spirit, but with a family of restaurants and a nonprofit to bring learning gardens to schools around the country

It can be tricky for anyone being the younger sibling, but imagine what it must be like to be the younger brother of Elon Musk, a businessman habitually referred to as a real life Tony Stark.

His reputation seems to get more outsized with each fresh headline. Just this week, the elder Musks company SpaceX filed paperwork asking for permission to use satellites to beam down Internet service from space. Meanwhile, his other high-profile company, Tesla, continues to make advances toward its ambition to make electric cars more ubiquitous. Then there is the fascination with colonizing Mars.

Kimbal Musk, 42, is a year younger than Elon and a very successful businessman and entrepreneur in his own right. But he admits the pair, who grew up in Pretoria, South Africa before moving to Canada to study and then the US, have a slightly different take on the world of business: We have similar views [though] his are stratospheric, while mine are more in the ground.

Food is a dominant theme in Kimbal Musks personal and business interests. He is a health-conscious chef, restaurant owner with his own sense of mission about subjects close to his heart: linking peoples food to their communities and tackling childhood obesity.

In an interview with the Guardian he speaks about his hopes for his food projects – and the inspiration he gets from his brother. The younger Musk, in addition to his work as a philanthropist, investor and entrepreneur, is a board member at Tesla, SpaceX, the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center and Chipotle Mexican Grill.

Ive always loved food, said Kimbal Musk, a co-founder of The Kitchen family of restaurants in Colorado and elsewhere, which make a point of sourcing from local farmers. Growing up, I cooked in the house, and when I cooked everyone would sit down and eat, and it was just kind of the way I connected with my family. I used to throw cooking parties in university. Everyone would come over sometimes youd just do a mac and cheese, but if you do that better than everyone else you can get people to come to you.

Kimbal Musk is gregarious and charming; his brother is intense and technical. Kimbal made millions working at a startup with Elon, and invested in his brothers biggest dreams along the way – and he is no less dogged about chasing a few of his own.

The differences between the things that give the brothers purpose are striking one Musk works to change the world through high-tech inventions, the other is most passionate about food, about teaching people to grow things and preparing meals that help people find a sense of community. Still, the younger Musk turns to a sports metaphor to explain how, different as they are, hes still learned plenty from his brother, whose business interests at times read like the pursuit of turning science fiction into reality.

When you think about basketball, and you watch someone like Michael Jordan play basketball even if youre a baseball player, theres still a lot to learn from there, Musk said. I really think about him more as my brother, to be quite honest. Its kind of a tough question to answer, because hes been so core to my life that its hard to describe specific things.

Elon clearly trusts his instincts, though, in light of the fact that, should he ever become incapacitated in some way, Kimbal is the SpaceX and Tesla trustee whod lead the task of figuring out what should happen with both companies.

Meanwhile, Kimbal has plenty of his own interests to keep him busy. He co-founded The Kitchen family of restaurants in Boulder in 2004, along with Jen Lewin and Hugo Matheson. It has eight restaurant locations today in Colorado as well as an out-of-town location, in Chicago. In addition to plans to expand in Chicago and Colorado, three new locations are on the drawing board for Memphis over the next couple of years.

The Kitchen actually refers to three related restaurant concepts. Theres The Kitchen, the organizations flagship community bistro, and The Kitchen Upstairs, a cocktail lounge with food prepared in a wood oven and artisan cocktails. Rounding out the list is The Kitchen Next Door, a community pub that serves things like burgers, salads, sandwiches, margaritas and beer.

For its Colorado-area restaurants, The Kitchen claims to source $1 million worth of product from local providers. In the Greater Denver area, The Kitchen serves 17,000 guests per week on average.

In 2011, Musk co-founded The Kitchen Community, a nonprofit that works to bring outdoor gardens Learning Gardens, as theyre called to schools around the country. Three years after its founding, the nonprofit had already built 200 such gardens in Chicago, Los Angeles and Colorado schools, reaching more than 120,000 children.

Its a different world entirely from the more fast-paced tech scene in which he once worked with Elon.

Their early partnership followed the younger Musks graduation from high school in Pretoria and decamping to Toronto to reconnect with his brother. Kimbal graduated from Queens College in 1995, the same year the brothers started the Web-based city guide platform Zip2, a venture which Compaq bought in 1999 for $307m. From there, the younger Musk began investing in tech companies, including Elons X.com, a payments venture eventually renamed as PayPal that eBay would snatch up for $1.5bn.

The brothers worlds diverged when Elon decided after some of his early successes to stay in the Golden State, while Kimbal moved to New York City and enrolled at the French Culinary Institute. He was there in 2001 during the terrorist attacks of September 11 and spent six weeks cooking for firefighters at Ground Zero, a formative moment for him.

My intent had been to go back to tech at some point, Musk said. Cooking for the firefighters, it was this just overwhelming sense of community that was created. Its impossible to describe how intense and awesome it was to see everyone doing that. It was simultaneously the best and worst thing that had ever happened to me to see 9/11 and be part of helping bring people together.

Doing that every day for 10-12 hours a day, six days a week, my brain couldnt go back to tech. I determined right there and then to open a restaurant.

He decided that it wouldnt be in New York, turned off somewhat by the intensity of the city. He instead traveled the country with his wife at the time and settled on Boulder, Colorado.

After Musk co-founded The Kitchen, the organization hummed along steadily for a few years. Then came a ski accident in 2010 that Musk calls a near death experience, one that left him hospitalized for months and helped crystallize his thinking about what would come next for him.

A restaurant, hed decided, could indeed be a positive force in its small corner of the world in things like the customers it touches, in the quality of ingredients it uses and in the care of preparation. But it couldnt really scale the ambition that drives so many entrepreneurs like the Musks, who crave big challenges, big wins.

After the accident, Musk said, I sort of got a new lease on life. I said I now have every excuse in the world to do what I want. And you know what? Im going to work on food culture and help food become fun and part of peoples lives again. The traditional restaurant is more commercial-oriented. But I want community through food.

That gave birth to his garden-focused nonprofit, which, when it comes to a new community, looks to plant 100 gardens at a time. The gardens are a combination play space and outdoor classroom that connect children to the process of growing food and give teachers an outlet for hands-on instruction. And The Kitchen Community raises $35,000 for each garden, a cost that includes everything from landscape design to site prep, while the finished garden can include things like internal irrigation, bench seating and curvilinear plant beds.

A mix of foundations and individual donors funds The Kitchen Communitys efforts across the states where its placed gardens. Today The Kitchen Community has more than 225 Learning Gardens in schools across Colorado, Chicago, Los Angeles and Memphis.

Tackling childhood obesity is a big motivation behind the gardens in schools.

When I look at the problem of obesity, its a depressing problem. So how do you create a solution that delights people? We came up with this design – my ex-wife, who Im still friends with, she knows how to create something where you go, Im so glad this is here. I really want to have this in my school. I want to learn here. The gardens, this is a product that really delights people.

In deciding where to take his garden concept next, geographically, Musk says the organization looks for cities that have foundations that can support a concept like this one. His team also looks at schools with districts amenable to the concept.

Not surprisingly, the level of support from one city to the next varies. If youre in a town like Boulder, he points out, theres not much foundation support from a problem like childhood obesity because its not a place where the problem of obesity is especially acute.

Meanwhile, gardens where children grow food while also learning about science, supporting local farmers and vendors, building operations that transform communities through food these are the among the things that occupy Musks mind, the things he wants to spend his money and time on. Innovation and purpose, to entrepreneurs like him, dont always have to involve gadgets and leaps in science sometimes it starts with a thing as mundane as the food we eat.

For me, I like to think in terms of three months out and 50 years out, Musk said. Three months out is what to do now, 50 years out is what Id like to do before Im dead.

If I look back and see specific communities where I made a difference using food, I will pass very peacefully.
