ED log
tw sh, and the usual
Tumblr media
**
july 2nd, 5:53 am
the past few days have been relatively uneventful, i just havent been eating much so there’s nothing to talk about. did binge a few times though
june 30th,
one ring of pineapple w/o the skin and middle
small cup of chocolate milk
something else maybe? cant remember eating anything else though.
yesterday, july 1st
6 tacos from taco bell, meat, cheese, and sour cream.
and 1 of their MASSIVE cups, with pepsi.
6-8 pineapple chunks
Purged it all, i ate 4 when i first got it, then picked at the other 2 later, which i didnt purge because i just didnt eat much besides the shell. i think i have finally, somehow, icked myself off taco bell. thank you god.
later, like around 2 am today
i had 1 medium and 1 small fry from mcdonalds
a pineapple soda
a coke
and 2 slices of costco pizza.
all purged.
Cant date this binge but it happened between this log and the last.
1 container of battered fries from a mexican place
and i THINK 2 grilled cheeses? with low moisture mozzarella and a bit of cheddar.
either way, all purged.
ive worked out twice this week, which was nice, but i cant see myself keeping it up unless im really desperate to appease my ed.
trying to get better with tracking my food but its hard, again, i have a really shitty memory and i dont really have the foresight to log my binges or meals when they happen. Nor do i really calorie count besides in my head, and even then its a rough estimate.
Cut for the first time today, ive always been really scared of pain so im shocked i went through with it. Im having a really hard time with some school related stuff right now and i just couldnt handle the stress. they’re not deep cuts or anything, really light actually, but i cut basically in the same place a ton of times so its really irritated.
ive never really used self harm to deal with my stress so im shocked at how much i didnt mind it. probably not something super addictive, but i can see myself doing it again once these marks fade. it helps to look at them and know that nothing really matters, i can torture myself all i want and it’ll be worse than what im stressing about. kinda. im still worried, but its definitely better.
Ive been gaining and losing the same 5 pounds, probably because im not purging everything i eat like i should be, i almost never purge snacks or drinks on their own. its hard sometimes, my depression have really intensified over the past few weeks and getting up to do anything let alone purge is difficult. i have to remind myself constantly that i dont wanna live in this fucking fat ass body forever.

What made you go vegan originally?
Well I was vegetarian after being basically woken up to the truth. I was quite naive and sheltered I guess? Maybe cos I saw cows grazing outside my window we lived next to a small farm and all I ever saw was animals grazing never saw anyone take them away from the field outside my window. Then honestly by this point I was 18 when I went vegetarian. at 15ish I had been seeing doctors I saw 3 different ones I was underweight the dentist thought I was bulimic due to the damage on the back of my teeth from throwing up so much. I complained that when I even try to drink cups of tea I’d often lose the ability to swallow. It didnt effect breathing or anything just I couldnt swallow properly. They said there is nothing for it. Its IBS by the time I saw the 3rd Doctor. When I went vegetarian for the animals some of my symptoms improved I later found out my mum was intolerant to meat and so am I. However when I went to university I went vegetarian the summer before uni started.I ended up eating more junk food and more cheese based foods. At home not by any conscious means but I guess i was eating no where near as much dairy as at uni. I was getting so sick then one day I looked up milk allergies and how they diagnose it. I found out they get you to go dairy free for just over a month the time required for your body to completely get rid of all dairy traces and then they reintroduce it. I didnt exactly plan to reintroduce it as I was eating plant based for just over a month when we went away on holiday to bruge now this was around 5 years ago. They barely understood vegetarian let alone vegan. One day I gave up after literally a few hours finding some where to eat. I ate a bite of cheese pasta and felt light headed dizzy and was wheezing worse than my mum who has asthma. At that point it was clear I have a dairy allergy which has recently been confirmed by a dietitian I am seeing for possible celiac now. Just got the blood test done on that earlier this week.Anyways around that time I was looking into veganism just anything I could find out about it from nutrition to the why. I was genuinely unaware of the baby chicks getting killed for eggs or the dairy cows being pregnant continually to produce milk and the calves being killed as veal and such as ‘waste’ products.I saw Earthlings I cried a lot and that was it really. Because i mean i couldve still had eggs as a vegetarian and be no dairy. But seeing what happens to one day old chicks even now I just want to just no...it makes me teary eyed thinking back to what I saw happen to them. So since then really i’ve been vegan there have been two times where I broke this both times mostly affected by my mental health. I have bipolar and borderline PD and uhh I have issues surrounding certain things and I made poor decisions for about a week or so the two times it happened. Some people cuss me out for this and shit on me but I feel like look whilst mental illness is not an excuse when you’ve developed an unhealthy relationship with food due to years of being scared to eat and being accused of having anorexia. becoming obssessed and fixated on calories and food and intake. When that turns dark and goes the opposite and becoming obssessed with losing weight and then you get put on medication that makes you go from 7st 5ish lbs to over 14 and a half stone in less than 6 months.it’ll fuck with you. I was very underweight and to go from that to double it almost in such a short amount of time I guess just triggered that past behaviours in me. To do anything to lose weight. The medication made me so hungry and I’d get so upset I’d binge eat my emotions away. Then I saw Keto and thought okay I’ll do this. Actually my reasoning behind it was because I am intolerant to meat and I used to think to myself if only I could get the same effect as I did when i ate meat. And then i ended up doing keto and eating meat. See meat would bloat me up after a couple bites i physically couldn’t eat more. I had some really destructive behaviours and thought patterns back then. I basically wanted to make my body bloated and in pain and sick so that I couldn’t eat and would bypass binge eating emotionally and lose weight fast. It didn’t last long before i woke up and was like holy shit Erin not only are you damaging your body you’re hurting animals and I snapped out of it. The other time I dont remember what happened I think it might’ve been when I was manic. Unfortunately when I am manic aside from last year every other year ive had a manic episode ive not been lucid Im very much not as aware or in control in that I feel like im almost an outside watching in but i cant keep up. And then even now I cannot remember the mania I had the year before last its so hazy to me I remember very little of it. Last year was the first year i was with it lucid and able to remember it. Which honestly was weird because its like you see yourself doing the stuff except you still struggle or cannot stop it. So its still really odd and because youre aware of what you are doing but lack the ability to often prevent the actions people don’t quite get it its like how can you be so aware yet keep doing it.Anyways I got sidetracked! I guess i feel i have to explain why I ended up twice in the 5yrs ive been vegan going back to meat. But yeah I am not at that point anymore in my life where I have those negative behaviours surrounding that particular issue at least thank god. So I found veganism through health issues and stayed for the animals and ethics. Honestly though if someone watches Earthlings and doesn’t go vegan I dont know how that even happens its so the most upsetting unsettling devastating video to watch and a real reality check to what truly happens.

No Filly 3 - Milk
"I understand I do occasionally
misunderstand others feelings."
Equius lifted his hands off Tavros.
The air felt different. The roughness in the beasts voice was softer. Just enough to sound normal.
Equius' nervous way of speaking somehow made Tavros feel less scared.
"Make yourself comfortable first, then we can get to work.. I will go. I need to go sketch out a few ideas for this project..
get the materials
" Equius seemed as if he was talking to himself more than Tavros.
"No. No Im fine. Im just tired."
"I assumed so. You should rest before we get to work."
Equius stood up, ready to get to work.
"No, Im fine. Dont touch me like that again, alright?"
Tavros speaking against the big man woah.
This isnt so bad after all.
"Are you hungry?"
Equius shuffled to the bed, sitting beside Tavros as Tavros sat up.
"I cant eat meat."
Tavros had this idea that all First Estates ate expensive meats. Luxury foods such a veil.
"I cant eat meat either. I have milk, nuts, bell pepers.."
"Milk?"
"Milk. you want Milk?"
"Yeah."
Tavros never had milk before. Equius must own a couple of cows.
"Can i go back downstairs?"
"Can i pick you up?"
"Alright."
Equius stands back up to gently lift Tavros. His arms are somehow both sweaty and cold.
He didnt have a dining room it seemed. All the rooms were full of projects and scrap junk.
The emptiness made the place feel more barren, larger, and colder. There however was a small table in an empty room with couple of chairs placed neatly around it. Not at all a room that made someone feel comfortable enough to eat. It looked fake, as if the table and chairs are meant to simulate a living space. Tavros and Equius sat opposite of eachother, silently, like a couple on the brink of divorce.
Silent besides the sips of milk between the two that sounded so loud in comparison.
Tavros chugged that shit though.
This was thick whole fat milk that Tavros' little body desperately craved.
Equius watched him chug the milk. Tavros knew Equius was watching him but felt it would be too awkward to mention it.
"Hey.." This time, Tavros was the first to speak up.
"Do you have a question?"
"Yeah, uh, how do you know Gamzee?"
"..We all know eachother here"
"Well- yeah- i mean.. why am i involved here??"
"He asked me to fix your legs. Im not entirely confident i can construct a pair of functioning human legs, i may have to do a few test models..nor do i own humanoid skeletal molds
"
He was talking to himself again.
"How long will that take..?"
Tavros wanted to get angry. He was upset that he was dragged into this without his own word in it at all.
He did however want to walk.
"A month or two atleast. I will try my best to accomidate you the best Im able too, Nitram"
"Nitram?"
Tavros smiled. He quickly covered his smile. No one calls him by his last name.
"Isnt that your name?"
"You can call me Tavros."
"
yes
Tavros"
Now Tavros remembers. Hes Equius ZAHHAK. Zahhak is the company that builds mechanical cattle and other various animals. The company makes a lot of money from its products but Tavros never understood the practical use for mechanical animals.
He takes a good moment to actually look at Equius. His face was pale, rough, and a little wrinkled. He still couldnt see the mans eyes. He wants to peek at whatever is under those goggles but couldnt just ask something like that so casually.
"Do you want more milk?"
"oh! Yeah- yeah uh
sure
yeah-thank you."
He was caught staring.

Transitioning to Veganism
In January 2019 I decided to take part in veganuary with the intention of being fully vegan afterward (bar what was already in my cupboard and needed eating up). It wasn’t a sudden decision, in fact, it had been a gradual choice that I had been considering for months at this point. I had been vegetarian since July 2017 and had been gradually decreasing my intake of animal products so that by the end of 2018 my diet was 80-90% plant based already. I had been avoiding dairy for the most part anyway as it causes my skin to break out badly and cheese was an expensive luxury on a furgal university budget. The only thing that really let me down in that aspect was when I ate out or by not checking labels.
Like most people I had watched the world-famous Netflix document ‘What the Health’ in the spring of 2017 and that was probably one of the first major catalyst that lead to me analysing and changing my diet. I had grown up on a small, rural island off the mainland of England, one of its main agricultures being farming. Every-day I would see cows and sheep grazing in fields both outside my bedroom window and on the way to school, I saw these animals had a good quality of life (in a way that they do not always in larger areas of Britain and the US), and like many people, never really questioned the connection between that and my dinner plate.
I was also notoriously fussy, and although I liked most varieties of meat, the same could not be said of vegetables. In fact I hated every single one until I was 16 and then I could just about stomach carrots. A healthy diet I did not have, despite how much my parents tried to push otherwise. Going vegetarian was simply not a viable option for me back then; but on joining university I started to cook for myself and my taste matured, leading me to today, where I now love 99% of veg (broccoli is legitimately my favourite food) and it makes up the bulk of my diet.
It meant, that when I watched the documentary I was able to genuinely consider becoming vegetarian, and started to slowly phase meat out of my diet. Even then, I knew that ultimately I did want to become vegan, after seeing the impact the meat and dairy industry has on our health*, the environment and on the animals who are subjected to it. But I wanted to do it the right way and for the long-term. If I cut out everything at once I knew after a week or two I would revert back to my usual diet, my body craving things that had always been present. I also wanted to be educated about things I substituted meat for; I go to the gym regularly and I wanted to know that what I was eating would have a good variety of nutrients. And most importantly, I didn’t want my mental health to suffer.
Like most young women growing up in this century I have had issues with food and my body. Although I have never received any formal help or diagnosis I definitely had an unhealthy relationship with food, especially in my mid-teens, though even now some days are harder than others. For the most part I am a lot better, but I was wary that if I suddenly cut out a lot of different foods and placed a lot of restrictive rules on my diet that I would be taking a huge step backwards, that I would go back to obsessing over every little thing that I eat. I didn’t want to sacrifice my health and knew that if I was to do this safely, then gradually converting my diet was the only answer.
And that is what I did. First it was dairy milk, an easy swap as there are so many alternatives on the market. I mainly go for soya at home because it’s the cheapest and I really don’t need anything fancy in my bowl of porridge, but oat is by far my favourite and go-to when I’ve gone out for a coffee.
Eggs was one of the biggest changes. In my second year of uni I had eggs for breakfast nearly everyday that I wasn’t on placement, and I genuinely didn’t see myself as able to give them up. But in third year I found a love of porridge and overnight oats, or tofu scramble if I fancied something closer to what I usually had eaten. And eventually I was only having eggs when eating out, there is nothing nicer than an eggs benedict (and if anyone can link me to a good vegan recipe for it, I will love them forever).
Like I previously mentioned, cheese wasn’t a large part of my diet, because as a university student it just wasn’t worth budgeting for. I’ve never had a problem with any of the vegan alternatives I’ve tried, though this may be because I ate cheese so rarely that I couldn’t really directly compare the two.
Chocolate, the crux for many people, was a big one. “But how do you live without chocolate?” I’m normally asked by my horrified coworkers, and the answer is that I don’t. In fact, I probably have it in some form everyday, it just took a bit of getting used to looking for the vegan friendly alternatives in tescos. But there are plenty, and even some of the major brands are accidently vegan (looking at you bourbons).
Eventually it just left occasions where I was eating out (laziness would sometimes lead to me choosing the vegetarian option, and other times it was simply because that was what I wanted to eat), and items where I had not checked the label for hidden ingredients. Milk powder is in bloody everything, and if it’s not that, it’s normally eggs. Quorn in particular is well-known for this, though their vegan range is steadily growing.
By December 2018 I felt ready to take on Veganuary. I no longer felt like my diet, or lifestyle would be negatively impacted by it and I saw it as a great chance to draw a line under the sand. When speaking to my dad on the phone two weeks in he asked if I was struggling yet. And honestly? I hadn’t even noticed, as there had been so few occasions where I would have chosen the non-vegan option anyway. To me it just made sense that after January I continued to eat plant based, and now, at the end of February I haven’t regretted it once. I am a giant advocator of eating a vegan diet. I feel so much healthier than when I ate meat, am more active than ever and can’t remember the last time I fell ill. I do understand it’s not possible for everyone, people who have had or have eating disorders may definitely struggle, and placing a load of rules on what they can and can’t eat wouldn’t be beneficial to their mental health in the slightest (just as it wouldn’t have been for me once upon a time).
I also understand that if you’re not educated about nutrition and the aspects of a healthy diet, then becoming vegetarian/vegan doesn’t automatically mean you’ll be any healthier, especially with the wide range of plant based foods and meals now out in supermarkets (I’m not berating any of these releases in the slightest, it’s amazing to see so many options and makes it a lot more accessible than it once was, it just means navigating for a healthy option isn’t always the easiest thing). Being vegan is still a privilege, I only have to support myself on my wage and it leaves plenty of room to opt for the more expensive meat alternatives and keep my diet balanced. A single parent with two kids however doesn’t have this option, and places like Lidl and Aldi are brilliant for selling a large quantity of meat for a relatively low price.
But reducing your meat and animal product intake is good for the planet, and I do think that every little thing, whether that be partaking in Meatless Monday or swapping dairy milk for soya helps. No-one has to be perfect or commit to the most severe of changes, especially if they feel it is what they should do because Instagram told them to, but making a substitution here and there helps massively.
*I am not saying that meat and dairy cannot make up a healthy diet, though like anything in large quantities it isn’t beneficial. There is also plenty of evidence against cows milk and how we digest it. In early 2019 the Eat-Lancet commission (linked below) was published, outlining global targets for the world population to achieve a healthy, nutritionally balanced diet whilst keeping food production sustainable. The diet consists mainly of fruit, vegetables, grains and legumes, with a small amount of meat and fish. It is fairly similar to the Mediterranean diet, and emphasises that you don’t need to cut all animal products out, but reducing them would be highly beneficial on a number of levels!

i had an incredibly disturbing nightmare last night and it stuck with me all morning, and id all but forgotten it until a few minutes ago, imma just stick it under a cut because No One Wants To Hear This Trust Me. and if someone DOES read it, tw for gore and violence. also ive been in a major creative slump lately so the way ive written this is a little... involved? it reads almost like a short story but id like to make it clear that i in no way enjoyed this dream or writing it and it literally makes me feel sick and i woke up crying because of it and i know how mean y’all can be so just... dont
ok so i dont remember the whole thing but like, i lived somewhere that had a backyard, except it was covered over and though only two sides had walls, it was built up against a cliff face so really only one side was open and the trees there were so thick you couldnt walk through. there were heavy padlocks on the door, but i had a key. i had the key on a chain tied around my hips, under my clothes. no one could ever get at the key, no matter what. no one could ever get in, no matter what. it was so massive so that when you stood at the top, near the trees, you could barely see whoever stood down the slope. it sort of narrowed out towards the bottom, and there was a small shed down there. it was dark, all the time. so, so dark. there was a girl down there, blond, stocky, her name was claire and she had pretty eyes. she was so kind to me, she had helped me from day one, and never made me do anything i didnt want to do.  i was softer in this dream, more trusting. easier to lie to. she told me that the first one had been a terrible accident, and what happened next was just cleaning. helping. they didnt do anything wrong, they made a mess and cleaned it up. spilled milk.  and really, after one, what difference did two, three, four, six, ten, twelve really make? they were all the same. theyre all the same, holly. this is all just the first time. whats the difference between once and twice, really?  i hated to go near the shed, where the stench of turpentine and meat got worse. where claire would be sinking her axe into the pit, over and over and over again, the sounds turning my stomach. seeing the muck pushed up over her legs, arms, stomach, made me grateful for the darkness down here. i could believe it was just mud.  more than the muck, i hated him.  i dont remember his name, but he was big and dirty and cruel. i was sure that he liked doing what he did. if i spent too much time with him, id stop believing what claire told me. but that was ok, claire didnt like me spending too much time with him anyway.  claire was so good to me. but he wasnt. where claire just wanted me to bring her bottles of turpentine, he wanted me to swing the axe. when claire would let me wait in the trees until it was over, he wanted me down there.  in the shed.  in the pit.  claire never let that happen. she stood with her arms folded, her feet apart, her chin lifted. she insisted i wasnt ready yet.  he told her she’d chosen poorly. i didnt hear the rest of that conversation.  the next thing i remember is fire, and screaming. claire telling me to run, run goddammit run, and dont you dare follow me. youre innocent, you hear me? youre innocent. you know she was an accident, she was a mistake. you never got your hands dirty, you hear me? RUN i want to look at my hands, now. the stains that mark claire’s never seem to wash off, no matter how much she washes she always looks grimy. weathered. mine are still soft and unmarked. clean.  fire bursts down the bottom end of our shelter, building and building and building. i can see the pit illuminated, and when the light falls on it some small part of my brain starts screaming. it doesnt look like mud anymore. then it catches, and it doesnt smell like mud either. something thats sounds too terrible to be true, so terrible it must be, begins to sing in the back of my mind. i turn and throw up into the scrub, wanting to expel the thought, pulling my dazed little cloud of trust and compliance back in close. i traded in my sharp edges, my fire, my fight. i gave them to claire and she promised me shed look after me in exchange. trust claire, and youll never have to try again. my lift my head and i can see her, down by the shed. she swings the axe into the flaming pit and i shudder, remembering the crunch, the squelch. she rests the head of the axe on the ground, so that it stands straight up. the handle reaches about waist height on her, and she rests her hands on it, tilting her head to the side. the flames frame her silhouette for a moment, just a moment.  then all hell breaks loose.  a split second after a booming voice announces the presence of the FBI (FBI? when did i come to america? where am i? how did i get here?) the flames engulf the shed and the heat combining with whatever they keep in there causes a chemical reaction of epic proportions.  i see reality itself unfold and crumple down the bottom end. the sides of the shed swell and pull back in. the roof lifts. then, it all reaches out with the same grace as a bird unfolding its wings.  claire’s very body dismantles in much the same way.  and then i can’t see anything, anything at all. orange clouds of heat, just pure heat, race up the slope toward me and for a second im sure its the last thing i’ll ever see but then i am outside, with an agent’s arms wrapped around me. at first i think he is comforting me but when i try to break away his grip becomes harsher and i realise, no, hes restraining me. he thinks im a threat.  and then my aunt is there and she used to be a cop, so i reach for her. she can help me, she can tell them, tell them that we were just cleaning up an accident. its ok, nobody really got hurt. spilled milk. but her eyes go wide and furious, and afraid and she tells me that im evil, how could i hide this, why didnt i stop it? she thought, no, she knew i was better than that. i was raised better than this, and shed sooner die than help me now.  she turns and runs into the flames. and that truth that was singing in my ear before, that thing that went against everything claire had taught me, it was screaming now. running at me with reckless abandon, screeching with blood between its teeth and- oh god. blood.  the blood of twelve innocent people, in my backyard.  the first woman, she’d had dark hair and four kids. there had been a car accident.  accident?  that’s what id been told.  and i couldnt even remember the others. how had i believed they were just cleaning up the same mess again and again and again? how could i believe that eleven lives were one, that one life was nothing?  the pit. the muck that covered claire at any given time. the axe, the squelch, the crunch.  oh god.

Urban Survival in the Aftermath of a Natural Disaster
Tumblr media
There are many different types of natural disaster all of which have, at some point in recent history, seriously affected a major urban area at some location around the world. Hurricanes, tsunamis and earthquakes appear all too often on news bulletins and they all result in loss of life in almost every case. The horrible truth is that when a disaster of such a magnitude strikes, loss of life is inevitable but the aftermath can be just as deadly to any survivor, unless they have taken the necessary steps to ensure their own survival.
All disasters, natural or otherwise, have one thing in common, they all highlight just how unprepared the vast majority of people are when in comes to living without the things that they take for granted, like clean drinking water, food, electricity, sanitation and safe shelter.
Take hurricane Katrina for example, even after the storm had finished there were still people needlessly dying from dehydration and other related issues. The vast majority of those that died were elderly, but that doesn’t mean that their deaths were unavoidable. If they had only acted upon the warnings that were given before the storm hit and had filled up containers with tap water, and put aside food that wouldn’t spoil they would have increased their chances of survival exponentially.
Although, in the case of Katrina, many of those that died were quite frail and would have needed help to prepare for such a natural disaster, help that was unfortunately not always on hand or didn’t arrive quick enough.
Katrina was one of the worst natural disasters to hit the US in living memory and one that should have provided a wake up call for many about the importance of being prepared for any crisis.
However, most people will never learn from the past or from mistakes that others have made by not prepping and will continue to put all their trust in the workings and structure of modern society.
Even after being informed about an impending disaster most city dwellers will still naively expect their utilities to continue working as per normal, and should they get cut off, they would thoroughly expect utilities to be back up and running very soon afterwards with minimal disruption to the normal way of life.
Many people also have a misguided notion that help will be quickly with them should they need it, all they’ll need to do is call for it! The truth is that help is very unlikely to be available for the first few days after a disaster type scenario, the emergency services will be simply too busy to help everybody.
Unfortunately, when a city is hit by a real SHTF disaster everything that makes life safe and comfortable will be gone. No water, no electricity, no law and order, and no immediate help of any kind.
If your city or town is threatened by a natural disaster and you can’t get out to a safe location then basic disaster prepping is the way to go and will greatly improve your chances of survival.
Urban Disaster Prepping – The Basics
First of all let ‘s start by saying that the information below is as basic as it gets and there is a lot more that can be learned about urban survival, this post is barely scratching the surface. However, regardless of how basic this info is, what you are about to read is still the most essential guide to urban survival and will undoubtedly save your life.
1. Water
Clean drinking water is essential for your survival and your general well being. The vast majority of people expect clean water to be pumped to our homes continuously, ready to drink whenever needed. These same people will also believe that their supply will be unaffected by a natural disaster and that in the unlikely event their supply should go off it will be reconnected very quickly; unfortunately, the likelihood of this actually being the case is practically nil.
Without water you will quickly dehydrate which can then lead to a number of medical issues ranging in seriousness from dizziness to heart issues, depending upon the level of dehydration.
Your body is losing fluids constantly, through sweating, breathing and the passing of bodily waste; these fluids will need to be replaced which means clean drinking water is absolutely vital. Drinks that contain sugars, alcohol or caffeine are not a good idea and should be avoided because drinking them will only exacerbate the problem of dehydration.
You may have noticed that I have been continually mentioning that your drinking water needs to be clean that’s because after a disaster, particularly flooding, water will often be contaminated with raw sewage and toxic chemicals. Drinking contaminated water is extremely dangerous as there is a high probability of catching a disease or a dangerous infection that will often result in diarrhoea and sickness. Sickness and diarrhoea will rapidly worsen dehydration and will lead ultimately to death, if not treated quickly.
All of the above needn’t concern you if you have a prepped correctly and have a store of clean drinking water. Normal tap water will be fine to store, and it is best to do so in strong plastic containers. You should add a couple of drops of chlorine bleach for each gallon of tap water stored, this will act to disinfect the water and stop any algae or bacterial build up.
You will need to store about a gallon of water per person per day and you will need to store at least three days worth of supply, although storing enough for two weeks would be much more prudent.
If for some reason you cannot access your stored drinking water and you have no option but to drink water that isn’t clean, or you are unsure about, then you have two options; boil the water before using it or, drinking the water through an emergency water filter of some kind.
2. Shelter
Unless you are extremely unlucky, your home will probably still be intact, it might be a bit damp, or a little beaten up, but it should still be habitable and provide you with much needed shelter.
However, if you have lost your home you will need a temporary shelter that is both safe and dry. It will be an absolute necessity especially in extremely cold or hot conditions, when hypothermia and heatstroke respectively can quickly become killers.
Your shelter could be a tent or just a simple tarpaulin, but anything that provides you with protection from the weather is suffice.
You might be in the position to choose the type of shelter you use but, to a large degree, choosing where to locate your shelter will be dictated to you by the type of disaster that has hit your locale.
Flooding will force you to set up shelter in an area of higher ground whereas you will need to look for open ground away from buildings and tall trees if your city has been hit by an earthquake.
3. Clothing
We’ve just covered the importance of having a shelter to protect you from the elements, but your first line of defence will always be your clothing or whatever else you can find and use to wrap around your person.
The correct choice of clothing is more important when combating the wet and the cold. It is better to wear several layers of clothing rather than one thick layer and always try to wear woollen clothing if possible as wool keeps you warm even when wet!
You will lose most of your heat from your head so make sure you have a hat or at least put something on your head even if it is only a thick paper bag.
Your hands and feet will be susceptible to the cold so have some gloves and woollen socks at the ready.
If it is cold there is also a good chance it will be wet too so your clothing needs to be waterproof, or you should at least have a good waterproof coat. If you find yourself without any form of waterproofed clothing, look for a large piece of plastic sheeting. You can then just cut a hole in the middle of it just big enough for your head to fit through and voila, you’ve got an instant wet weather poncho.
In hot weather it is all about staying out the sun. If you do have to venture out then light weight clothing is the order of the day and the lighter the colour the better too as it helps to reflect the sun’s rays, absorbing less heat.
You should try to keep out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day and when you do go out make sure you are always wearing a hat, preferably a wide brimmed one, and try to ensure the back of your neck is covered if you have short hair.
4. Food
Although your stomach might tell you otherwise, food is not going to be on your list of immediate priorities, well at least for the first few days anyway.
Being hungry is not the greatest feeling in the world but food is something that a healthy adult can survive without for up to three weeks with no adverse affects, unlike water!
That being said, there really is no need to struggle without food. Storing food couldn’t be easier. You can quickly stock up on long lasting foods such as canned meat and vegetables, powdered milk, and pre-wrapped nutrition bars, anything really that has a long shelf life, doesn’t require cooking and doesn’t need to be stored in a refrigerator.
Just remember that if you are storing canned products don’t forget to store a can opener with your stash of cans! To Conclude

Surviving in a city in the aftermath of a natural disaster is never going to be a pleasant experience but by ensuring you have covered the basics for survival as outlined above you will be massively increasing your chances of getting through it unscathed.
