Soooooo pokeblr i wanna experiment with something.
Wanna give all of pokemon some positivity, so i wanna try a bit of an experiment:
What's your favorite thing about each generation?
Yes, even ones you possibly don't like. I wanna see love for every generation so every fan of pokemon thats out there feels like they can be included.
I'll start:
Gen 1: If im being honest, i dont like gen 1 for reasons i won't get into now, but it started the franchise i adore so much so i can at least give it that.
Gen 2: Asking me to pick just one thing from this gen, my favorite ever, is like asking me to pick a favorite key on my keyboard. I guess i would go with music, because to this day the only thing to get close to beating this when it comes to favorite soundtrack is legends arceus.
Gen 3: Gave me 2 of my favorite mons in mudkip and jirachi, and also has some neat areas (Shoal Cave and Meteor Cave always interested me to no end).
Gen 4: My first pokemon games, and what got me into the series. Plus, how could i not love the lore of this game? Only one that matches this lore-wise to me is gen 2!
Gen 5: Characters. N is such a facinating character to me, but even outside of him we also have the rival that truly feels like an actual Rival, Hugh! Plus lots of others, like my boy CHARLES-
Gen 6: This gen gets way too much hate and I'll stand by it. Theres so much to love here! I guess I'd probably go with Mega Evos, which should have absolutely gotten more love!
Gen 7: As my 2nd favorite gen, it also has a lot to love for me. However, easily what stands on top for me is regional variants. Without question, the COOLEST THING TO BE ADDED TO MODERN POKEMON. Giving new spins in an entirely different way than megas!
Gen 8: Despite all the hate gen 8 gets, i ADORE the sports themeing. It really makes gyms feel important for once, and gym battles actually feel like a MASSIVE spectacle. Every other gym, e4, and champion battle were closed off, but here, the liveliness of the crowd feels so real!

ok after a totes scientific study i have decided that pokemon ruby/sapphire (and the reboots expanding them) have the best story in the pokemon games, but hear me out:
First of all, ORAS is the last gen/reboot/incarnation or whatever I've managed to play, for a variety of reasons, hence this review only coming out now despite it being gen 8. But listen, most of the ORAS story, despite being a reboot, is the same, spare for mega evo variants
Groudon vs Kyogre and the game variations were there in the original (og i played sapphire, new vs I played Omega Ruby, so I've now seen both sides, though if you're an adult with working braincells and played out one half you can get the other by process of deduction.)
[then again my native fandom would scream "just subtext" and think that constitutes an argument until they play the others -- and then still probably deny it, because they pride themselves in refusing bare minimum gradeschool level story comprehension]
First and foremost and most major to me they have the pokemon champion deeply involved trying to figure this shit out the whole way through instead of sitting in some tower waiting for you to defeat him.
At the end of the day, that's my point, but the general fact that even in gen 3 much less 7 they had two flipside stories along with the gender swap (basic as the triggers are) already offsets it from most gens afterward to me.
we can rename gym leaders and give everyone hula skirts all we want but at the end of the day that wasn't genuinely innovative on story. Every generation mechanics change and update so I don't count that towards whatever.
But RS/ORAS depicts: - a still engaged champion - a dual faced story that you impact from rain to skyfire At the end of the day everything just feels infinitely more tied to the hero's path than *trips and skids onto a legendary after being The Very Best*
I mean it's still pokemon so it's not shakespeare, but those points are pretty big to me for what pokemon can pull off.
I will add ORAS kind of highlighted a few elements of this, but really the changes weren't that drastic as someone that initially played gen3 and was annoyed at the pokemon design style change back then, but with several gens after continuing it, can see it now.
The full gen sprites really help lay out the path in the eye of the viewer, but if you were begged to give a parallel story of merit for kanto or johto you would fail. I wanna be the very best. and stumble on legendaries. after some events, that generally happen in all games.
also i just caught primal groudon in an ultra ball on the second try, eat my shit. and by second try i mean two ultra balls, not resets.
water evaps around him anyway and I didn't want to use double effective earth either so I had swampert chip him with rock throw until he slept, got a crit, another hit, then while still asleep ultra balled at like 1/3 health lmao Like I literally wrote my big thoughtful thread about this on twitter, saving in front of groudon then caught him in two ballSD FKJSDKFJSDFKSDFJSDKFSJD even tho apparently his catch rate is 2% lower than original gen?
Either way, I think gen 3 was ahead of its time, with stubborn "the older was better" people overjudging some attributes while enjoying the pure pkmness of others, and idk, I just felt like saying this, because compared to kanto or johto this shits all over it.
And while later gens tried to upgrade the stakes with time distortion or whatever, we never really saw that manifest meaningfully, like it didn't intertwine between primary versions and didn't -- like -- that story was WRITTEN to be big but didn't really interact and I don't really remember the champsion being more involved than RS/ORAS.
Like in Johto Ash/Red just sits in a cave during everything waiting for you, like Mewtwo in gen 1. Gen 4+ they kept adding bigger badder evos and some mechanics to freshen it, but I don't remember all of these elements engaging before/after RS/ORAS the way they did to try to make some actual ~story? Maybe XY but in a different way. Sunmoon and its variants were more about the lore of the region itself, which every region has, and just sort of rebranded things. IDK.

Top Bug Pokes By Gen
So I thought I would next discuss my favorite pokes in each type. The problem is, it’s tricky narrowing down to just ONE in your favorite type. ;____;
As such, I’m going to cheat for this first type (bug) and pick a favorite out of EACH generation of games.
Tumblr media
Gen 1 - Parasect
It has to be Parasect. This is not a popular choice, and I know it. Parasect’s typing (Bug/Grass) makes it a very difficult poke to use. I’m not going to deny that. I’m also not going to try and deny its rather lackluster set of stats.
Paras and Parasect are really special to me, though. I still remember when I was a kid, playing Pokemon for the first time, and running into a Paras in Mount Moon. That awesome little sprite and its etheral cry (incidentally, a cry deemed cool enough to also be used on Mew) filled me with such a sense of fascination and wonder, as did its relative rarity. I’d been wandering around the cave for ages and didn’t expect to run into anything new, and especially nothing so alien and cool-looking. I immediately added it to my team and brought him all the way to the Elite Four, where he joined the Hall of Fame. Lackluster stats didn’t hold him back from being a useful and valuble member of the team.
I named him Sopea. I’m not sure why. I just made up a word, and it sounded like it suited him.
Paras and Parasect remain possibly my favorite bug type to this day. It is a bug with a parasitic fungus that gradually consumes it, and that is fascinating as heck. A zombiebug, basically. That’s why its eyes are white. There are real species that are preyed upon by parasitic fungi, which ‘control’ their insect hosts, and it’s a truly fascinating thing I strongly suggest looking up sometime. :)
Anyway, my second-favorite of gen 1 is probably Venomoth or Scyther. I love them both a lot. I don’t care for Scizor’s design too much, despite its popularity in the meta game.
Tumblr media
Gen 2 - Heracross
I mentioned before how I’m not super-attached to Gen 2. I never played it as a kid (after gen 1 I didn’t play pokemon for many years), so there’s no nostalgia factor for me. I honestly often forget which pokemon originated in gen 2, in fact. Regardless, Heracross is definitely the coolest bug type from that era. Other than Sun/Moon’s funky Ultra Beasts, his typing is entirely unique. A Fighting bug type is truly awesome, and his design is really beautiful. Simple but elegant, with an adorable little smirk, and a really cool species in real life.
Tumblr media
Gen 3 - Shedinja
Yes, I think most can agree, Shedinja is a novelty poke. Yes, he’s not actually useful in battle except in extremely circumstantial situations. I know. I don’t flippin’ care. He’s adorable, and the idea behind him is amazing. Spooky ghost pokemon that’s the discarded shell of a cicada? Something that literally will swallow your SOUL if you look into the empty hole in its back? Sign me the fuck up, ayyy. Again, a totally unique typing, and I can’t help but adore him. Cicadas in general are awesome, and if I can’t pick Shedinja as my favorite from this gen, I would choose its bouncier, livelier partner, Ninjask.
Tumblr media
Gen 4 - Kricketune
I know you givin’ me an ugly look for this choice. And I’m not gonna bother trying to convince you he’s useful in battle.
But he’s got swag. Dele-dele-whoop, bitch.
(Look, gen 4 was pretty bad for new bug types, so gimme a break)
Tumblr media
Gen 5 - Galvantula
Gen 5 had some fantastic bug types, but the prize probably has to go to this crazy electric tick-and-then-spider. Joltik is adorable AS FCK and its evo is awesome AS FCK. I had one on my team during my run of White, and I loved the thing to absolute bits. Once again, before SuMo its typing was totally unique, and I was beside myself with excitement for getting a badass electric tarantula. This speedy spider will run laps around the unfortunately clunky Vikavolt, and I’m happy to see him sometimes used competitively as well (though usually just as a sticky web lead, but compound eyes + thunder is still a tasty combo that’ll pack a punch).
My second-best for gen 5 is reeeeeally hard to say. That gen was definitely the best in terms of getting awesome new bug types (FFS, we even got a Mythical Bug type, and Volcarona), and probably the best for bug lovers of ALL the gens.
Tumblr media
Gen 6 - Vivil– oh uhh this is awkward
Yeah, that’s the only new bug type that gen. Needless to say, not the best gen for bug catchers, BUT not the worst either maybe?? Because we DID get a bug type with a TON of forms to collect, and I have to admit, I had a good time collecting them. I still don’t have those special event forms though. ;___; Oh Pokeball Vivillon, someday you will be mine. Also, Scatterbug/Spewpa are the cutest caterpillar/chrysalis forms. (Sewaddle comes close, admittedly)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gen 7 - HELP I CAN’T CHOOSE
I mean come on, we have an insanely badass isopod thing (with an adorable AF first evo) or a super-adorable fairy-bug thing (with an adorable AF first evo). I gotta tell you, it was pure agony during my run of Moon, because I wanted both on my team so badly. I didn’t put both, because I wanted a more diverse team than that, but it really, really hurt leaving little Wimpod behind. They are both so fantastic.
This is a repost on a new blog. The original post was on Feb 19, 2017.

Tumblr media
Hello again I'm the 9th best chojin and since childhood I've been an absolutely massive fan of Pokémon ever since I watched Ash Ketchum journey across the land I also wanted to go on a Pokémon journey and one birth day my dad brought me into a GameStop and there it was on the Gameboy shelf a green game with a badass dragon the cover Pokémon emerald was my first game and since then I've played every gen but I've spent enough time on the intro so let me tell you about my favorite Pokémon from every gen
Gen 1 Slowbro
So out of every mon from the original 151 why Slowbro why not charizard or nidoking well its simple I like his dopey smile...yep that's it sure alot of cool Pokémon exist but a good cute boi every now and then is all I need plus he has that cool ass shellder tail sure it doesn't really look like a shellder but if you squint step back 3 feet tilt your head and ignore the fact that the shellder on its tail was its own Pokémon seprate from shellder till it got cut part way through development and gamefreak were to lazy to redesign so its a shellder now it then yea it looks just like a shellder plus its got some damn good stats and the coveted psychic type that dominated gen 1 that make it worth the wait till the second to last gym in my opinion
Gen 2 Crobat
with the creation of gen 2 there was a bunch of evolutions and pre-evolutions for gen 1 added to the game and while some of these were done to add new types to old Pokémon like syther into scissor and onyix into steelix other Pokémon wee given new evos to make them better crobat is one of these Pokémon golbat isn't terrible but crobat is a whole other beast with a much better speed stat there isn't a hell of a lot out speeding him plus getting one is super easy even with zubats lowered encounter rate in gen 2 its not terribly hard to get one then you just gotta get him up to level 22 and then use the power of friendship to evolve him into crobat friendship evos are annoying most of the time but for crobat its worth it know some of you are probably wondering why crobat? he,s only pseudo gen 2 mon why not a pokemon introduced in gen 2 and id agree with you if only they let you use more then half the Johto dex before the post game
Gen 3 Sceptile
Now if you have the memory capacity to remember the intro then you know emerald was my first game and yes this is a case of this was my first Pokémon so I have an emotional attachment to it and every time I play trough Hoenn I always pick treecko even recently when I decided to play through oras again soft reset for an entire day so I could play through the game with a shiny treecko it may not be the best Pokémon ever but I still love it and no matter how many times I play through Hoenn ill always pick treecko
Gen 4 Froslass
when new giving new evos to old Pokémon your kinda putting every new pokemon at a disadvantage since this a new thing for a Pokémon their already familiar unless you fuck up really hard and make lickylicky but thankfully gamefreak didn't fuck up giving my second favorite Hoenn mon a female exclusive evolution giving it 2 immunities in exchange for a new ghost type weakness by giving it the ghost typing and giving it a cool design based off a geisha and yuki onna makes this one mon that I don't mind waiting till the 7th badge to get
Gen 5 Darmanitan
This one was kinda hard tbh because despite the fandom consensus the unova dex has some bangers haxsaurus samurott braviary but out of the sizable chunk of Unova mons I like there's only one who can be my favorite and that has to be darmanitan he’s so cool having the origin of a Pokémon designer going to an end of year party and seeing a daruma doll burning in a fire and saying *imma a make a fucking Pokémon outta that* AND IT FUCKING WORKED! this bastard does two things be fast and hit shit and it does that like a fucking G also it has a zen mode and that's ok coulda been done better AND THEN IT WAS because with regional variants being a thing now they made darmanitan British and an ice type and made him hit shit harder because his zen mode doesn't make him a special attacker but all things considered I prefer original recipe Unovan darmanitan because I like its design more yep simple as that tho I cant like Galarian darmanitan does have a funky afro
Gen 6 Greninja
If you know my thoughts gen 6 you know its not positive but I cant deny its got a decent pokedex and whos the best Pokémon of this dex? its a cool frog ninja based off Jiraiya from the romance of the 3 kingdoms or if you're uncultured Naruto but unlike Naruto greninja doesn't run after some emo for 500 plus episodes but he does get a pseudo mega in the anime later the games and its a cool form imo he’s fast he’s strong got cool design with a cool origin and I don't need much else
Gen 7 Minior
Now let me start with this I'm perfectly ok with minior not being a pre-evo for solrock and lunatone just because two Pokémon have the design origin doesn't mean they should be related maybe a tangential relation from pokedex entries but I don't think they should be part of the same line now with that out of the way let me tell you why minior is great first off its meteor form looks so cool it looks like a Pokémon that would be used by the goron from the legend of Zelda it its meteor form isnt al it has since its gimmick is that once it hits half health it *casts off* and takes off its shell and two things about this form 1 look at his lil face cute mans 2 look at his speed and attack boost dangerous mans all that plus its colour gimmick making it so I can get it in orange and how can I not love it
Gen 8 Perrserker
so here we are the most recent gen and I can say without a word of doubt gen 8 has one the most solid pokedexs in years I love most Pokémon and sorta just tolerate others but out of all these Pokémon I love perrserker the most ever since I ran into it as a Galarian meowth I was kinda shocked it looked like some thing that would shit in your shoes and take pride in it I had to catch it and after evolving it it keeps that same energy but now slightly taller perrserker is a great mon with a great hidden ability steely spirit which I lovingly call communist steel worker making it onto most of my galar teams what can I say I love this 3 foot tall Viking gremlin and altho gen 8 is still relatively new I can confidently say perrserker will say my favorite
so that's it my favorite Pokémon of every generation I've loved Pokémon for the grand majority of my life and I hope to love it in the future and cant wait to see what Pokémon from gen 9 will join the ranks of my favorites in a few years time and with that thank you for reading and I hope to see you again in the future

Sooooo if you know me, which I know you dooooo, you'll know I love video game theories. With the drop of the new Pokemon Sword and Shield trailer, there are so many new theories going around! So let's just jump into it. Theory. Review. *clap, clap*
(here’s the trailer if you havn’t seen it)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOPVBm0sA7Q
In the trailer we got to see new lands, characters and the starter Pokemon... and it set the internet ablaze. The biggest basically confirmed theory is that this game’s region is inspired by the UK. Big Ben. The hill patterns. The clothes patterns. The sprawling country sides. People have even made side by side map comparisons. So that's neat! Another map theory is that this region connects to the top of the Kalos region from X and Y... but that's pretty far fetched.
Tumblr media
I managed to find an HD map of the new region, Galar. On the map we get to see all the areas featured in the trailer. We see several "gyms" revealed. Based off of the trailer, the one gym we see is grass (based off the leaf above the door) we can speculate what the other gyms could be based off that.
Tumblr media
1 - Ground or Rock
2 - Poison/Fairy (a half based on the symbol looking like 2 colors)
3 - Grass (as seen in the trailer)
4 - Water
5 - Dark
Other things to note about the map is the location of the hill patterns. Those hill patterns feels like a great mystery to be solved. Could it be this game's mythical beast? To me it looks like a giant chicken with like an antenna for a tail. It appears to be breathing fire? or smoke? and thunder bolts are shooting out of it. Around it's feet seem to be small little creatures. Some with 2 legs, some with 1. 2 look humanoid and the other looks more like an animal. WHO KNOWS! We will just have to wait and see. There was a leak that said that the legendary Pokemon are a wooden horse and a metal snake so maybe the giant chicken is the Mewtwo to the 3 legendary birds?
Tumblr media
Another neat thing is the brown mountain region. For starters it looks to have a giant Dugtrio shape dug out f the wall. further up is a giant door? It seems to have a shield and what looks like gears or flowers. I read folklore about the UK that at a crossroads you could meet a fairy or some mythical creature that would open a door leading you to a magical land. Could that door be the entrance to the magical looking mushroom forest above it? ...or maybe it’s just the path to the right? or is that the cross roads? THEORIES!
Tumblr media
Other theories about new Pokemon come from the dragon-like castle. The front entrance has a dragon/wolf like head. Going deeper into this theory, the several sprawling towers on both sides of the castle could represent the wings of this creature? But we don’t 100% know that this is a dragon head or even if it represents a Pokemon. In other games creatures were featured in structures that were purely aesthetic and didn't represent a Pokemon so you never know. There's another dragon image in this castle though, that’s the golden head on the top of the smaller tower within this castle. Which clearly looks like a golden Japanese dragon. Again, we don't know if this is a Pokemon. Still awesome!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As far as the map goes the rest is pretty straight forward BUT still interesting. Haunted villages, sea side towns, rail ways, clock work cities. Check out the HD map yourself.
Before we get to the new Pokemon, here are the older gen Pokemon featured in the trailer. What a mix of different Pokemon from EVERY generation before.
Tumblr media
Gen 1: Pikachu
Gen 2: Hoothoot, Tyranitar
Gen 3: Flygon, Wailmer
Gen 4: Lucario, Munchlax
Gen 5: Minccino, Zweilous, Braviary
Gen 6: Fletchling, Meowstic (Fletchling is technically only on a weather vane)
Gen 7: Wishiwashi, Grubbin
...and from Pokemon GO we got the 1st Gen 8 Pokemon Meltan and Melmetal that will be featured in Sword and Shield.
Tumblr media
Now lets look at the starters. We got the Grass monkey, that monkeys funky. Grookey! a mischievous chimp that is full of boundless curiosity. Things to note is in the intro video he's banging a stick on a rock implicating possibly rhythm is involved in the Pokemon’s nature. Also it seems like it makes grass grow from its touch? As far as the name goes I believe it's based on Groovey and Monkey? Another thing to note is if this falls in line with the Pokemon starter theory the grass starters are all based on prehistoric creatures. So could this end up being something human like? ...a drumming humanoid ape?
Tumblr media
Like every year early “leaks” surface about what the final stages of the starter Pokemon might look like. This year is no different. Here is the first “leak” of Grookey’s final evo:
Tumblr media
Next up is the Fire Bunny, Scorbunny. A rabbit Pokemon that is always running about, bursting with energy. When we first see this bunny it's dashing around with it's feet giving off fire. Just like every fire starter there’s always a point that fire comes from like Charmander and his tail. With Scorbunny it seems to be its feet. Theories on its name branch out into a possible theme of the game and that's sports. The name being a mix of Score and Bunny. Score because it seems to represent a soccer player. The patch on it's nose representing a trope in anime where a character with a bandage on its face represents a sports star. Also footy being invented in the UK! This could lead to possibly it's evolution line kicking a fireball around relating to both soccer and its feet being its fire starter. To go with the starter theory again the fire starter should represent a zodiac sign and this easily fits as it’s a bunny/rabbit.
Tumblr media
Following the trend here’s the “leak” of Scorbunny’s final evo... which looks more mechanical that I’d pictured...
Tumblr media
Finally we have the anxiety riddled water chameleon thing. Sobble. A somewhat timid Water lizard Pokemon that shoots out attacks as it hides itself in the water. It's name seems to be a mix of Sob as in to cry and bubble. It has these adorable little chameleon type hands! eeeee! Theories are that down the line it could be a ghost type based on it going invisible to hide? To end with the starter theory yet again it states that the water starter final should have some form of weapon like Blastoise and its cannons so maybe it'll end up being a sniper of sorts? stealth artillery?
Tumblr media
Lastly we have the majestic “leak” of Sobble:
Tumblr media
(PS: here’s the Pokemon starter theory incase you didn’t know what I was talking about -- from quara.com)
Tumblr media
Some theories about all 3 are pretty interesting. the first that those older "leaks" were half right? we got a fire bunny and a monkey like grass starter. That's neat. Another theory is that the shapes of the heads are all similar because they represent knight helmets falling in line with the medieval swords and shields theme.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also have no news yet in how Meltan and Melmetal fit into Sword and Shield. The only theory as of now is just the fact there’s a giant steampunk city and the Melmetal line have metal and bolts involved in its body.
Another Pokemon leak claimed that just like mega evolution and Z-moves, this time we will be getting Armored power up. This goes with the Medieval theme as well. Like donning a suit of armor. In the trailer there’s a part where a soccer player has 227 on his jersey. this could be the obvious answer which is the release date BUT it could also be the number of Scarmory... the armored Pokemon! oooOOOOOooo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's also one shot which appears to say Gamefreak in an unknown language. This being confirmed by the Gamefreak logo. This has become the Rosetta stone for Pokemon language theory.
Tumblr media
Finally the last thing noticed has been possibly another new Pokemon. In a quick shot you can briefly see the image of what looks like an electric hare/wolf type thing? There’s more letters as well but nothing can be made out yet?
Tumblr media
As of now this is about all we know. There are more theories swirling out there but these are the biggest things I’ve managed to put together. Bottom line... I’m really excited for this game!
PS: pretty funny note, a Youtuber (Jimmy Tumor) accidentally predicted the titles before the official release dropped. hmmmm?
Tumblr media
OH! PS2: I can’t make it at the moment because Photoshop doesn’t want to work properly on my laptop BUT if I had to predict the “Yellow” version for this generation I'd say it would be called “Pokemon: Scepter” Sword is attack, Shield is defence Scepter would be special, like magic. The Merlin of this medieval theme... Other people have a different theory...
Tumblr media
Alright. That’s all for now!

Top 5 things about Gen 4
Hell yes.
The emphasis on mythology.  Gen 3 kinda had myths, with Rayquaza specifically in Emerald being the hidden third.  That was novel.  But Gen 4 really dove in with the complex mythology behind the gods of space and time, the over-god Arceus, the three lake spirits that blessed humanity with willpower, knowledge, and emotion.  Not to mention Giratina, whose separate world keeps things in balance beyond even that.
This is kinda cheating, but the legends in general are a huge step up.  There are a ton, but beyond that, they have such a connection to the world.  The birds and the regis just kinda existed, while the beasts were tangentially related to Ho-oh but not quite.  The lake spirits?  Directly a part of the overall mythology.  Cresselia and Darkrai are established as embodiments of the phases of the moon.  Shaymin exists as a being representing the concept of gratitude, who can only be found by expressing significant gratitude directly. Heatran is the spirit of a volcano, and Regigigas is the lord of the Regis that helped put the continents together.  Manaphy...was there.  Plus, the ability to find all of them from direct events where you find and capture them?  Ideal.  Please bring that back.
Unique and effective villain team.  Rocket was always really straight-forward and not that interesting.  Magma and Aqua had something unique, but their motives were pretty stupid, and nothing about their goals made much sense.  Galactic is cult-like in its stance, and Cyrus himself is just using that cult to achieve his own goal.  The underlings also got a bit more fleshed-out, and were more engaging than any subordinates that came before.
Legitimate challenge without being ridiculous.  Gen 4 gym leaders did not fuck around.  Gardenia, the second leader, had a Roserade.  Crasher Wake had a team of three waters types that included a Gyarados and a Gastrodon to mess up Electric and Grass respectively, giving him an effective team to prevent move-spamming in just three Pokemon, something I don’t think any Gen 6 leader managed.  But despite that, it wasn’t ever an unfair or obnoxious challenge.  You just had to play smart and be prepared.  Gen 7 has this obnoxious thing with the trials, where the summoning of a second Pokemon makes it 2-on-1 against you, and they can easily fuck you up in one round.  It’s a stupid challenge that’s not really fun.  And one major Pokemon instead of a leader’s team of 3-5?  Not as engaging, and nowhere near as dynamic.
Evolutions where they needed to go.  Gen 4′s Pokedex is not as great to me as most.  Surprisingly, I don’t care for it as much as you’d think.  But the evolutions?  Weavile and Gliscor was incredible improvements.  Rhyperior and Dusknoir are cool as hell.  Togekiss was a huge buff and is cute as all hell.  Tangrowth and Lickilicki...exisst, and are neat enough considering they were never really relevant in their pre-evo forms.  Leafeon and Glaceon are A+ new types for the eeveelutions.  Roserade, Ambipom, Mismagius, Honchkrow, Probopass, Gallade, Yanmega, Porygon-Z, Mamoswine, Magmortar, Electivire, and Froslass: all of these new evolution options suddenly existed, and improved on things that had either fallen behind slightly and needed the buff, or were never that significant to begin with any at least got notoriety with a new evolution.  I kinda wish sometimes that new evolutions was still a thing.  Instead, now we’re just praying for megas, or something is doomed to obscurity.

What's the Two Looker theory?
the tldr version is that there are currently two lookers existing in the same universe, and that its going to be very relevant very soon.
but of course, that shortened version is worthless, because who would believe that without enthusiastic and lengthy elaboration? GET YOUR SEATBELTS ON CAUSE ITS TIME TO TALK POKEMON THEORY
(spoiler warning for sumo postgame ahead! also, seriously, you might want to go get a snack or something. this is long. really long.)
first up: you gotta know that gens 1-5 (and the remakes in those gens) are all in a separate but similar universe to the one in gen 6 and beyond. for convenience, ill call the first universe uni a and the second one uni b.
(fyi most people refer to uni b as megaverse, but i want the names to match and nonmegaverse doesnt really... roll off the tongue quite as well, so,)
so you might be wondering what the fuck that means and how we know its true; to answer this we need to take a quick look at pokemons current timeline!
im unsure on which one of them came before the other in the timeline, but xy and oras both happen chronologically before sun and moon do. we know this because of dexio and sina appearing with the zygarde and mega evolution stuff, and wally appears at the battle tree as an older and more experienced trainer.
these are canon, however for right now its mostly just hypothesis that chronologically speaking, after alola its sinnoh. the pkmn breeders from alola look IDENTICAL to the cowgirls/farmers from sinnoh, which doesnt seem to prove much about the order of things but it doesnt disprove anything either; its more like retrospective icing on the cake, since ill be explaining why i think this will be the timeline later on.
so, keep the idea of sinnoh coming after alola in mind. its also important to consider the idea of mega evolution as not just a game mechanic but an important plot point! basically, universe a has no mega evolution, while universe b does, and the differences in the plot between rse and oras are NOT retcons; theyre entirely different universes!
that might not look like it makes much sense on its own (without elaboration or if youre still attached to the belief that mega evo is JUST a game mechanic and not plot relevant or an indicator of anything) but its important to mention now, since as i explain more itll hopefully make more and more sense.
believing this theory means you have to think about it like this, so while this isnt completely canon yet, its necessary to treat it like it is until you fully understand what this theory is all about and why it would make sense. if youre not convinced afterwards, then so be it! ... i mean, i dont understand how you WOULDNT be totally on board with this, but im not you and maybe youre not quite nearly as into spacetime shenanigans as i am.
now we head into sumos postgame stuff with the interpol! during this, we learn that there are people known as “fallers” that “fell” into a universe from another parallel universe through a mysterious portal, and seem to have lost most if not all of their memories. fallers attract ultra beasts, as the ubs believe they can somehow get home using them, sensing that this person is also not from this universe.
looker explains that he was once sent on a mission to detain/kill an ultra beast. his team included a faller, who was unwittingly being used as bait for the ultra beast. looker felt pity for the ub and neglected to kill it, unfortunately giving the ub a chance to kill the faller, which it promptly took.
then its revealed that anabel is a faller, who was found washed up on a beach muttering something about protecting the battle tower, which is where you could find her in rse.
but see, the battle tower doesnt exist in oras, instead replaced by the battle resort, and you do not meet anabel at any point in oras. the battle resort is also where you meet an amnesiac looker, muttering about a mission, speaking in a peculiar way, which is noticeably different to the way he speaks in xy and sumo. he did not make an appearance in rse, this isnt just reused dialogue.
hmmmmmmmm.
lets put looker aside for a moment though and focus on anabel. while theres a possibility that right now there are two anabels, it seems that she and the battle tower never existed in this universe... but mega evolution does. the anabel we see in rse is the same as the one in sumo; she crossed over from uni a into uni b.
now, lets look at some facts here!
in platinum, bw and oras, looker has a... peculiar speech pattern. if you look up his quotes on bulbapedia, youll see what i mean; its very noticeable.
... looker completely lacks that specific quirk in xy and sumo. hes goofy, yes, but its nowhere near the same. its important to note that oras happens between xy and sumo, and again, that looker didnt show up in rse and that dialogue is completely new. the differences in these speaking patterns are not mistakes. they are fully intentional.
next up: lets crush a few doubts about this theory you might be having right now!
“this is a kids game! surely this is WAY too convoluted. pokemon isnt that deep, they wouldnt bother with a plot this complicated.” wrong. nope. incorrect. buddy, did you play sumo or any gen 5 game? i can only assume you havent, cause not only were the plots in those games the most detailed and involved and emotional, they were BY FAR the best. additionally, kids are a lot smarter than youd think, and i also not only know theyre going to explain everything, i know HOW theyll do it; but i digress.
“youre implying there are two lookers because one speaks a certain way and had amnesia but isnt it possible theres just one, who either isnt a faller or is a faller but had no megaverse/uni b equivalent, and he got his memories back by the time you meet him in sumo?” wrong there too! remember, its CANON that xy and oras happen BEFORE sumo.
now remember anabel, who doesnt have her memories back and had no idea she was a faller.
and remember that xy/sumo looker is very, very explicitly stated to not be a faller, because otherwise, HE would have been the bait on that mission and HE would have been the one who got killed.
xy/sumo looker is definitely not a faller.
but dppt/bw/oras looker is.
if at this point youre still having doubts, heres a question. can you offer any other explanation that is all based on canon information, without retconning anything or making something up, and have it all make perfect sense and resolve all of the issues that come with going against this theory?
yeah, i cant either.
hopefully at this point you should be fairly convinced, but hold on! i still havent explained why i think sumo will chronologically happen before the plot in the dppt remakes! i was all like “this will make sense later” but i didnt talk about sinnoh much at all and havent completely gotten you on board with this yet! well guess what yall ITS SINNOH TIME
a quick note though: past this point is a lot of personal observation/opinion and speculation. its meant to explain why i think this theory is spot-on, and elaborate on what i think is going to happen. im not speaking for anyone else but myself and im not stating my own opinions as fact or concrete proof; though i am saying that i think im right about this.
with that out of the way, lets begin! its going to take a while, but the buildup is necessary (imo at least) and yes, this is in fact relevant to the theory.
something to notice is that the stories in pokemon games have been progressively getting more involved and interesting. there was hardly anything in the first two, gen 3 started getting more involved but its not much to write home about, gen 4 took it up a notch, and then gen 5 the life ruiner broke the fucking scale and punched me in the face.
so, we have all these plots, getting more detailed, but... not a whole lot is tying them together at first. sure, a few lines make reference to other games, johto and kanto are connected both plotwise and literally speaking, theres even that cameo character in bw who was a rocket grunt in a previous game! but theres nothing really significant that ties things together.
well, at least until gen 4.
in gen 4, we of course meet looker, who as a member of the interpol has reason to make further appearances in other games. and then he shows up in every game afterwards, sometimes for a while, sometimes only briefly. less significantly but it does help the point im about to make, we also get caitlins first appearance, who ends up being part of unovas elite 4, and johto is a part of gen 4 as well, which was already a point of connection between regions, but gen 4 added the sinjoh ruins, connecting the games within the same gen!
after gen 4, the games vary in how much they connect to the others, but it definitely changed the standard.
and then sun and moon came out.
even the very start of the game: you move from kanto to alola, meet alolan variations of kantonian pokemon, meet grimsley and colress from bw/bw2, meet dexio and sina from xy, and watch sadly as lillie breaks everyones heart and leaves for kanto.
then, after that, you can go to the battle tree and meet not only red and green, but cynthia, steven, and wally, and you can find grimsley, colress, dexio and sina here too. or, you can go participate in the postgame plot with looker and anabel, who are also returning characters; though anabel is significantly more unexpected than looker. it was pretty unexpected finding out caitlin was part of unovas elite four, huh?
and hey, didnt sinnoh have a lot of weird space/time shit? palkia and dialga are the gods of time and space, and giratina has a whole other dimension where everything seems wrong and alien and mildly uncomfortable, with a strange area theme that seems just slightly off, where you meet/battle the games biggest antagonist, who has become mentally unhinged by spending time there.
oh... and alola has fallers and ultra beasts, who came from other timelines/universes... and you go into ultra space, which is a whole other dimension where everything seems wrong and alien and mildly uncomfortable, with a strange area theme that seems just slightly off, where you meet/battle the games biggest antagonist, who has become mentally unhinged by spending time there.
plus, gen 4 is the first where you can at any point walk around with your pokemon behind you, making you feel closer to your pokemon than ever, and alola shows a significantly stronger connection between humans and pokemon than ever seen before, even compared to xys introduction of pokemon amie (the trials, ride pokemon, the fact that humans are specifically stated to have influenced several alolan variations, z moves, the ceremony for choosing your starter, everything about the aether foundation/type: null, if you consider ultra beasts pokemon then lusamines a very literal example, there are LOADS of examples)
... and diamond and pearl are next up for remakes.
in gen 7.
paired with alola.
i wonder if the two games are going to be EXTREMELY connected?
personally im willing to bet that the distortion world IS ultra space, i think itd make a lot of sense of cyrus knew what happened in alola and became interested because of it, and that team galactic will be pursuing ultra beasts (which there will likely be more of).
i also think uni a!looker and uni b!looker are going to meet.
imagine with me for a moment.
diamond and pearl remakes come out. you enter jubilife city, where you meet looker! you have a conversation, he introduces himself, then disappears.
you move on, and-- oh! theres looker again! you say hello, but he strangely doesnt recognize you and introduces himself again. ... odd.
you see him again. he recognizes you and references your first conversation, but doesnt seem to know anything about your second.
a fourth meeting. once again, he doesnt remember your previous conversation, and also seems to be doing something entirely different, and... hell, he doesnt even SOUND the same...
now, after a while of this, hes realizing somethings up. hes a fucking member of the interpol, hes goofy but hes not an idiot. he guesses that he has an impostor, and begins searching for this impostor so he can confront/apprehend them.
sometime later, maybe in the postgame, maybe in the maingame, you meet him again and have a short chat, when hes suddenly interrupted by a phone call. he hangs up and informs you that someone spotted his impostor, and speeds off to go deal with this. he doesnt tell you where hes going, but he didnt need to; you can easily guess from the phone call that you should head to jubilife city.
there, you see two lookers arguing with each other, and loads of shenanigans ensue because looker is so goofy and endearing theres no way its not going to be hilarious and silly at first; but then when everything calms down, shit gets serious, and anabel ends up showing up.
im willing to bet shes going to feel some kind of connection to uni a!looker; nothing specific, just an odd, unidentifiable feeling that... ah, it eludes her. strange indeed that he seems to also feel... something, that he cant identify at all; he just knows its there. is it... kinship of some kind? but that wouldnt make sense, theyre both certain theyve never met, and theyre certainly not related. how curious!
of course, that only remains a mystery until they figure out this other looker is a faller, and everything starts simultaneously making more and less sense.
of course thats all just my own prediction for how itll happen, but i dont think im far off base at all and i think itd be completely in line with both lookers character and how pokemon games operate.
now, a lot of people believe that this theory means one of the lookers has to die, and to that i say what. no. look, that “there can be only one” shit is completely unnecessary and i REALLY doubt that theyre going to kill off a looker, especially considering how much everyones grown to like him (or at least everyone ive ever spoken to who knows who he is. seriously, hes too lovable for this.)
instead, i think the following will happen!
1) the lookers partner up and work together (and tell people theyre just twins)
2) they find a way to send uni a!looker back to universe a, or somehow create a way to communicate/travel between universes
3) we learn more about what happened in universe a, and why both anabel and looker were mumbling vague things about urgent missions when they were found washed up on beaches
im not sure that all of these will happen in the same game (in fact i highly doubt it) but it seems like the logical progression of things.
i think im out of things to say so there you go! thats the two looker theory and how i think itll play out in canon! there are likely a few things im missing, but im fairly certain the information i provided isnt incorrect, just possibly incomplete (sure hope not though cause ive been writing this response for no joke four hours straight). hope it helped and also converted you to the two looker theory club, or the tltc. if you join you get a free croagunk sticker and also a heart-shaped locket with a picture of looker in it if you dont already have your own
