Hi, the question about MCU Matt’s sunglasses reminded me of something I’ve wondered about occasionally: is there an in universe reason for why comics Matt wears sunglasses?
In-universe, this topic has never been explored in-depth, though there are many hints and it is easy to speculate. (The out-of-universe reasoning, of course, is that dark glasses are a common shorthand for indicating that a character is blind, even though many visually impaired people in real life don't wear them. Often, those who do do so because their eyes are sensitive to light.)
In Daredevil volume 4 #14, when Matt fully embraces his public identity and also decides to stop wearing his glasses, he indirectly refers to them as a mask.
Tumblr media
Matt: "I disguise myself mostly out of force of habit, Wendell. And now that you mention it...I'm tired of masks." Daredevil vol. 4 #14 by Mark Waid, Chris Samnee, Matthew Wilson, and Joe Caramagna
This suggests that he uses them to shield a part of himself. Just as his Daredevil mask hides his identity, his dark glasses hide something that he doesn't necessarily want other people to see. The intensity of the accident that took his sight would suggest that his eyes would look quite damaged, and most Daredevil artists at least provide an indication of cataracts. Hiding his eyes could be a decision based in self-consciousness-- that Matt thinks the sight of them will make people uncomfortable. It could also be a part of trying to assert control in his life by being very intentional about how the rest of the world sees him. As a lawyer, visual presentation is important, and Matt is very good at putting up a front; he wears nice suits, he is clean-shaven, and his hair is neat. And he wears dark glasses so juries and clients can't see a messier, more "flawed" (if you will) part of himself. Matt is also someone who lives immersed in half-truths and has been hiding parts of himself his entire life. He isn't someone naturally inclined to bare his whole self to the world at any given time, and in that context, using the "mask" of dark glasses to hide a very vulnerable part of himself feels like a very natural strand within that web of secret-keeping.
My feeling is that it's a little bit of all of this.

The Reactor is best represented by The Hermit, associated with introspection, reflection, isolation, loneliness, and exile.
And yes, I know Nuclear meltdowns don't make the buildings blow up, but debris is a neat visual shorthand for an uninhabited wasteland!

the early bird is the worm - some thoughts on Warren the Eagle
i’ve been fixating on Warren from DHMIS a lot (oh lord why did it have to be him 😭💖) and enjoying a lot of the conversation around his character, both positive and negative! so i wanted to get some thoughts down about him and see what other people think. the writers did an amazing job of portraying an instantly unlikable guy, and i want to examine that unlikability, to see what we can learn about him and his mindset:
a little bit of a recap: when Warren accuses Red Guy and Duck of being bad friends, and the two respond that it’s Yellow Guy’s fault for forgetting the password, Warren doesn’t try to defend Yellow Guy. instead, he goes on a defensive, egotistical tirade about how because he’s not ‘technically affiliated’ with the OK Stop organisation, they don’t think he knows a bad friendship when he sees one. with no prompting, Warren has inserted himself into the interpersonal troubles of another group (that he doesn’t know!!) and made himself out to be the person being attacked. Warren is not a good Samaritan. it’s got nothing to do with Yellow Guy being bullied at all - this is all a vicious ego trip for Warren, who feels persecuted by people he doesn’t even know and projects himself onto other people he perceives to be victims.  it’s fascinating, and why i feel it’s a disingenuous interpretation to assume the ‘Warren the Eagle’ name is some mean-spirited joke towards trans people - as a trans person myself, i was worried too! but i realised that it’s not literally about him not being an eagle because he doesn’t have wings - it’s because Warren is oblivious to who he is and the way he treats other people. he’s a social parasite who dresses up his problems in victim-supporting language, validating his toxic behaviours that leave the people around him exhausted and upset. Warren refuses to take accountability for his behaviour and latches onto Yellow Guy despite not having a genuine interest in him or his wellbeing. Warren just wants to be liked, and he realises that in Yellow Guy’s safe space (his brain), he can be...even if he ends up hurting Yellow Guy in the process. Warren being a worm is visual shorthand. pretty much everyone immediately had a visceral response to him and his uncomfortable, invasive behaviour, and the fact that he views himself as a creature that is so radically different from what he actually is - an eagle instead of a worm - is supposed to communicate to us that his perspective is warped to the point that he cannot (or just refuses to acknowledge) how nasty he is to others. you’ll notice that Yellow Guy’s Brain Friends - who are portrayed as a positive, healthy force - are immediately accepting of Warren’s identity and validate his thoughts without question, because they want to be supportive. they’re doing a nice thing, and it’s not played for laughs! but Warren takes advantage of that kindness, and it doesn’t take long for those friends to grow tired of his behaviour. they do the healthy thing by removing themselves from the equation.  so, yes...i like Warren as a character a lot, because i think he is a great representation of how you can’t just appropriate the language of positive mental health without doing the actual therapeutic work of unlearning your problematic behaviours. he’s equal parts stubborn and ignorant, and it seems he identifies with being an eagle less in a ‘this is a trans allegory’ sense, and more in a ‘i refuse to acknowledge that i’m being an asshole to the people around me because i am the best and everyone should cater to me.’ sense. that being said, i’m very excited to see more lore and meta and character development for Warren from the fandom! i think headcanoning him as trans is awesome - on that note, did you know that earthworms are intersex? i’m also delighted by the rise of the LoveBird ship (Shrignold/Warren) and the potential for both of them to learn to love in a way which works for them both...the dynamic is so neat 😖💖 that being said, what do you think? do you love Warren? are you indifferent? do you want him to die in a fire? i’d love to know! 🥰

I am here to ask for your kamado character rant… i love him too. Id love to hear ur thoughts on him
HELL yeah. let's go.
Okay I have a lot of opinions on his character but real quick I wanna appreciate his clothes. They're SO good. The ultimate visual reprisentation of his status and his history. Firstly: I love that his kimono (very much a Johto related item of clothing in the pokemon world) is embroidered, something that is clearly associated with Hisui. It's very neat visual shorthand for his two homes. Also, the all black fabric is a HUGE status symbol. True black dye used to be super hard to come by, and so having a whole outfit dyed that way?? Its one hell of a flex. Also it just looks cool. And its a pretty subtle mirror colour wise to Giratina. Like sure. Black, yellow, and Red, but its not super obvious like Volo's outfit. I think that's neat!
Okay. His character. I find him fascinating, and it's really sad to me that people just kind of disregard him because of the banishment. Yes, that was a poor fucking choice, but that doesn't mean he isnt an interesting complex character. In fact, quite to the contrary! It is one of the most important and interesting decisions he makes! Dislike him for it all you like, but I do think its the only decision he could've made in that situation, character wise.
So. Kamado lived happily in Johto. He had wife. Then crazed pokemon attack his village, and he watches everyone he's known die, apart from Beni. That's gonna fuck a guy up, and it does, its why he distrusts pokemon so acutley. Eventually, after travelling with Beni, he goes and establishes The Galaxy Team, and Jubilife. Now he is in charge of a village. The saftey of everyone is in his hands. And then the sky breaks in half, and pokemon start to become crazed.
Where's he seen this before?
Leading so many people is already a huge weight on his shoulders, and now there is a potentially world ending crisis going on. And your player character appears out of nowhere the very same night that the Noble pokemon the clans revere get struck from above and become frenzied. Your arrival appears to be the inciting event (and if Giratina is behind the frenzies then he may well be right, even if your character didn't summon the lightening.) You go and you fix it but then the sky turns red anyway. And there's only one person who he has associated with the frenzies and the rift amongst his ranks.
Kamado, I think, is scared. He has the lives of all of Jubilife on his shoulders, and he desperatley doesn't want whatever happened in Johto to happen again. A guy can only move on from watching a whole village levelled once, and this time it would be his fault. He needs to do something to protect his people, but this is so much bigger than him. Quite literally what else could he do? So he makes a desperate decision that I'm pretty sure not even he fully believed in. But again he had to do something and he was afraid for the village and the saftey he's created to be destroyed again. The world was literally ending!! He didn't do it to be mean to the player character! He did it because he thought he had to. Who's gonna make only correct and rational decisions while time and space are about to collapse in on themselves? Definitley not the traumatised guy who is completley committed to protecting his people.
Like yeah, it was the wrong decision. It was a bad thing to do! But in character, really, could or would he have done anything else? Does him being unpleasent to the player character make him uninteresting? There is so much to think about with him!! And he's just sidelined because people don't personally like him all that much!! Give this old man DEPTH I'm BEGGING YOU.
OH YEAH. WHY DOES NO ONE UTILISE HIS GIRATINA SYMBOLISM. THERE'S SO MUCH THAT YOU COULD DO WITH THAT. SURE, VOLO BATTLES WITH IT, BUT IN TERMS OF MAJOR CHARACTERS VOLO IS TRYING TO INVOKE ARCEUS. (and, plot wise, failing) Where's my fic about Kamado striking up a deal with Giratina or being involved in lengendary bullshit at all (the answer is that its sitting on my unfinished fic pile but. that's besides the point. it's an underutilised avenue! You could do cool shit with that!!)

I am genuinely Bon here though! I love to help people pick out clothes and get a signature outfit and all that. I just think fashion is neat way of expressing yourself, and is a quick visual shorthand for people when they see you. What do I want people to think when they look at me? How is the person I am expressed by the thing I’m wearing? It’s important to me, and, I think, a really cool sort of personal art, and I love to help other people with it.

a few more scattered thoughts on tenchi muyo because i watched too much and i have to put my thoughts somewhere:
rewatching this franchise really gave me a newfound appreciation for the generally universal visual language of anime. so many conventions in body language, facial expressions, and action are shared between series, at least of that era, and they rapidly became easy shorthand across an entire industry, and i think that’s fuckin neat
mihoshi and kiyone are 90s fashion icons
speaking of kiyone, it's fine that she isn't in the OVA because she's frankly pretty inconsequential as a member of the harem/family unit. but it was beyond fucking weird that when they resurrected the OVA they went ahead and said that tenchi's mom was named kiyone. there was already a name for her. come on.
tenchi fucked the catgirl
i did appreciate OVA 3 characterizing tenchi's own mom as such a sadistic prankster that before her death she coached her dad and eventual widower to tell tenchi an annoyingly long shaggy dog story about how she died. also her writing "IDIOT" on tenchi's face with a sharpie while he was sick in the hospital as a baby was hysterical
unless you're like a giant fan of GXP and war on geminar, which you aren't, you can pretty much skip parts 4 and 5 of the OVA. it's mostly characters that didn't exist in the 90s sitting around and talking politics that don't fucking matter to the rest of the series. tenchi marries all the girls. there. that's the one good part.
noike felt like a waste of the character. tenchi having an arranged fiancee was a huge twist that very quickly fizzled out and then she just kinda blended into the wallpaper of the rest of the harem. it was great that she knew how to handle an increasingly flanderized mihoshi but she pretty much just became the house chef with sasami in pts 4 and 5 and then got married. again, skip them.
mihoshi having a trust fund failson brother who looks just like her and runs a private military contractor is a profoundly hilarious concept and extremely on brand
tenchi fucked the catgirl
mihoshi genuinely terrifies washu and that fucking rules. her ineptitude is a force of pure unbridled chaos
sasami has a preternatural ability to accidentally befriend an antagonist and then go "what the fuck dude" when things go south
i think it's probably for the best that sasami and tsunami fully merged by the time tenchi married everyone. i know the looks-12-but-is-actually-800-years-old look was very popular but nooooo fucking thank you
OVA 4 uses very familiar stock sound effects, as i found out when they legitimately used the hanna-barbera running sound, followed by me barking out a shotgun blast of a single laugh
washu severely sexually harasses tenchi like twice in the original OVA and then leaves him alone for the rest of the franchise
i was all about ayeka x tenchi as a kid but i've kind of let it go and it's pretty clear the writers did too.
tenchi fucked the catgirl
no seriously though tenchi fucked the catgirl. ryoko got pregnant first, then ayeka, then fucking ryo-ohki. he fucked the shape shifting catgirl spaceship rabbit and got her pregnant. their kid is going to be a spaceship.
some of the english dubbing stinks but i have to commend ayeka’s VA for keeping up that goofy transatlantic accent for so long. it ended up working especially well with the “head in the clouds romantic worrywart with a hair trigger temper” characterization she had on tenchi in tokyo
so much incest in the OVAs. so goddamn much. ayeka’s handwaving of “oh but it’s normal on jurai” doesn’t help
WHY DID TENCHI FUCK THE CATGIRL

Hey! I recently found your succession theories that link Kendall and Rose together, and I think that they are brilliant. It got me thinking that the thing that links them could possibly be that Kendall (and therefore Rose) are autistic. After grieving the death of his autistic sister (that he blames himself for) where we don’t know what happened, but I think that Logan may have institutionalized her before and she died there which is why Logan blames himself.
This would also be around the 1960’s when new (and mainly incorrect) studies surrounding autism were released claiming that it could be “cured” with the right schools and work to make a child “normal” early on. Similar attitudes carry on into the 1980’s when Kendall is born, and Logan thinks that he can fix his son. These attitudes Logan shows also plays into how Logan talks/interacts with Iverson, who is heavily autistic coded.
Once again, I love your theories!!!
Hi! Thank you for your kind words, anon! And I'm so sorry it took me a a couple of days to get to this one – I've just been swallowed up by end of year work things.
I think that's a really interesting theory, especially given the show seems to be pretty clearly signalling that Iverson's autistic, like you said. Logan's exchange with Kendall in both the thanksgiving episode where he tries to dictate how Kendall parents Iverson and in 3.08 where he asks him if he's 'getting better' as if Iverson's autism is a sickness feels like a clear indicator as to his thoughts around autism generally (and like you said, the idea that it could be 'cured'), but I also think the shot where he hits Iverson is an interesting one to consider too.
Tumblr media
I've always read this blocking as telling us about Kendall's childhood in the sense of domestic violence – the framing of Kendall immediately behind his son is a neat visual shorthand of creating a flashback without actually using a flashback. He could almost be looking at a memory, and he reacts viscerally and quickly in a very similar way as to when Logan hits Roman in 2.06.
In that sense, I think it also creates this interesting link between Kendall and Iverson more broadly, particularly when you consider the beat with Lego earlier in the episode. Lego is something that helps Iverson with his transition between houses, and in the scene in 1.05, Rava holds the box but doesn't play, while Iverson and Kendall's actions mirror each other:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kendall plays like his son does, which on it's own is an interesting tidbit, but what makes it more fascinating to me is the show brings it up again through Roman two episodes later when Kendall's going through a pretty big transition of his own in the aftermath of the failed coup in 1.06.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, it can be read as a throwaway joke, but I think there's a really strong argument to be made that it's furthering the connection we're supposed to read between Kendall and Iverson, and how we're supposed to see Iverson's needs as Kendall's needs too. To tie it to Rose is a really interesting connection as well, and especially given autism was viewed as a form of schizophrenia through to the 1980s, it really compliments the connection to Rosemary Kennedy and Rose Williams too!

the thing about symbolism that i think a lot of people who are not themselves writers don’t understand is that sometimes you give a symbol to a character purely because you think it’s neat, or it looks cool, or you’re making a silly little easter egg stealth pun on their name, or you just think it fits their overall aesthetic or style.
and sometimes you give a character a symbol because you’re intentionally trying to cultivate a visual shorthand that your audience will consciously or subconsciously start to notice as a foreshadowing marker—like the narrative equivalent of a brightly colored tag on a tree in a forest to signal a turn in the trail, a way of saying this is important, pay attention.
and sometimes you go back and reread your draft a few weeks later with a fresh eye and go “oh my god, i really did a thing here with the beetles” or whatever it is, but it was a complete accident and so you decide to just keep leaning into it because it works.
and sometimes you get a reader who goes “wow you really did a thing with the beetles here” and you’re like what? and then turn to wikipedia and discover that there’s a whole folkloric or mythological or etymological history attached to whatever that you literally had never heard of before that, by pure lucky coincidence, happens to work incredibly well thematically with how you used whatever your story. (this happens a lot more often than you might think.)
and when you’re reading or watching a story written by someone else, and noticing recurring symbols, you really have no way of knowing for sure what kind you’re looking at—which is why, when you’re doing textual analysis, symbolism is and must always be a garnish. it’s seasoning. you cannot construct a full meal out of symbolism. if you’re not starting with plot and character your analysis is going to be bad, full stop, because inevitably you’re going to read way too much into something that the author just thought Looked Nice.

ya know, people drag rio for a lot of shit like the golden gun and what not but what i want to talk about desperately is him being such a goddamn man child? like, do you remember how hype he was about going to legoland or that fucking helicopter he was building or when he was playing basketball and just kept saying "ball" as if that was a whole sentence? this dude is a crime lord but deep down he is such a child and that makes me feel all the things
YES!!!!!!! omg anon i KNOW i LOVE IT. he's such an overgrown child and it's a source of continual amusement to me. another fav is his appreciation of the crispy hashbrown wizardry. also the petulant sulking when nick picked him up from jail (yes obvs he had reason to be upset but the WAY he was slouching against the car and pouting so everyone knew he was In His Feelings cracks me up) ditto the penguin hoodie car wash pout. he's ridiculous and it's great.
the model plane thing, imo, can be both adorable and gut-wrenching depending on how you want to take it. there's the obvs boyishness of it but it's also a neat bit of world-building stitchery or w/e tf you'd call it tying together both 213 and missing marcus/being reunited with him in 302. activities involving fine motor work is something physical therapists often recommend for people rebuilding dexterity after an injury and we see in the next ep that rio gives the plane to his (v confused, uninterested, clearly never having played with a model plan in his life) son which makes me read it as an activity he was doing to recover but also visual shorthand for marcus being on his mind.

So Matt's eyes. My main reference for Daredevil is the 2003 movie and the Bendis, Brubaker and Waid runs where Matt has white eyes. In the TV show Matt has normal eyes, and I assumed it was a budget thing, but recently I got to read a handful of comics from the 90s and Matt has normal eyes. I tried going back to the original but Matt's eyes are never visible there. So Matt's eyes
This is a really good question, and the short answer is that there’s quite a bit of variety in how Matt’s eyes are depicted. I’m fairly bitter about the Netflix show’s approach (my co-blogger and I wrote a post analyzing it way back when, which also goes into depictions of Matt’s eyes in general) because it just seemed like laziness. It was very disappointing, especially after the precedent set by the movie in which-- as you mention-- Matt does have cataracts and some scarring. Some fans have presented a theory that Netflix Matt (or any Matt, really) might have prosthetic eyes, and that would make a lot of sense given the severity of the accident, so that’s an explanation you can adopt if you’d like.
In the comics, there’s a range of depictions based entirely upon the whims of the art teams. This range extends from-- as you mention-- relatively uninjured-looking eyes to a variety of visual shorthands for cataracts; sometimes Matt’s eyes are pure white, sometimes they look kind of pale gray or light blue. Here’s one of my favorite renditions, by Gabriele Dell’Otto from Secret War (2004) #3:
Tumblr media
[ID: A painted comic panel showing Matt Murdock's face from the neck up. He is doing a half-smile and raising one eyebrow. His eyes are a milky gray.]
I like how a a lot of artists handle Matt’s eyes, and it would be nice if this aspect of his character design were treated with more consistency, especially since we don’t see his eyes all that often since he’s usually wearing either dark glasses or the Daredevil mask. I also, personally, would prefer for the design to be a little... gnarlier, to reflect the damage implied in his origin story. Realistically, the area around his eyes-- if not a significant part of his face-- would have some kind of burns or scarring, and it would be nice to see that; for the physical trauma of his origin story and the visible signs of his disability to override the need for him to look conventionally pretty. (I mean, he’s Matt Murdock, he’s going to look pretty no matter what, but that’s beside the point.) Obviously, comics art is inherently a visual shorthand for things that would look more severe in real life, and I do like that most artists at least show that Matt’s eyes themselves are damaged, but I think it would be neat if they leaned into it a little bit more.

After 8 million days I finally finished my third round deeeeeeep edit of the final chapter… that wouldn’t die... not even with fire… It was more or less a 33% rewrite, but that is ok as the previous round was a 75% rewrite so I’m gradually moving in the right direction. Nice that there were fewer words that I wanted to send back…
I’ve been doing edit rounds in different font colors so it’s been neat to see how much is changed from round to round. It’s a cool visual shorthand to quickly understand where things went off the rails. First two chapters were maybe 80% in first draft black while 3 is 75% second draft red and 4 only holds maybe 10% of the first draft. Just the bones.
Since I started on the impossible back half, now I get to clean up the ''not too bad' first half… It’s kind of nice to visit that part of the story once more, action and conflict and a bit of first time world building in a new fandom. Trying out the characters to see if they fit, settling into a new headspace. All the fun things.

And while I’m lighting my nonexistent reputation as a discerning consumer of quality media on fire and tossing it in a dumpster anyway, I also thought it was a neat little nugget that (in the first 5-season arc, anyway), the boys spend a reasonable amount of time in s1-s3 wearing suits to impersonate various officials, but as soon as the angels start showing up (and especially after Zachariah shows up), with their suits and their backstabbing fake-polite corporate culture, the boys don’t really go undercover in any way that requires them to wear suits anymore. Nifty little bit of visual shorthand, that.

some neat meta I’ve noticed while putting together the database:
I’m currently procrastinating on my summer class work adding the different event banners to their respective pages, and something that seems VERY consistent between the onslaught/defense events is that they all have basically the same logo. same font, same graphics, everything. the only difference between the two is that the onslaught events are red, and the defense events are blue.
here are the banners for two onslaught events, elementary escapades and postmortem panic:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
note the logos: same font/color scheme, same graphic of two swords and a shield in the background.
now here are two defensive events, ageless artifice and sands of revelation:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
same font (maybe a little bolded), same logo, different color palette.
I don’t think it’s an important detail, just a neat little visual shorthand between the two types of events.
