a topic i'm probably going to write a more expanded thing on someday is this weird feeling that to be Better at art you must be less unique and leave behind your quirks ("it's just my art style!") or incorporate them in a way that is appealing to a bigger audience which usually means downplaying them in some way.
art improvement is something i'm hugely passionate about so this isn't one of those "just make it bad" or "your art is fine the way it is" posts. i love studying the science behind what looks good. but there's like. this gap between what we consider 'good' or 'okay' art and 'great' and usually 'professional' art and usually the latter, although 'better', tends to always look more.. corporate?
just thinking about all those learning to draw anime videos on yt ive been seeing that end up with more or less the same gacha game friendly aesthetic despite them all being made by different people with different influences or the old joke about calarts churning out artists with the same exact disney tva style, etc etc
trying to balance making art that is 'professional' and not losing your personal touch is... certainly something.
