The little girl is shaking like a leaf. Rare are the moments where she’s home alone - sure, she’s lonely, between her mother and her drinks, her father and his mirrors, her grandfather and his television, but she’s not technically alone.

Still, rare does not mean never. Claire has, in fact, been left by herself in the house (in spite of her young age), and she’s very much on edge. The slightest noise makes her shiver, and anything louder than the icebox makes her whimper in fright. Truthfully, she wants to retreat to her mind - where she’s Opal, where she has a lively house and a loving family - but she can’t do that while there’s noises downstairs.

Noises that Claire has convinced herself belong to an intruder.

Hence why she’s sneaking downstairs, bolting for the door - white shoes flying over crumpled papers and cigarette boxes - and racing towards the first person she sees the very moment she clears the front porch.

It’s certainly not a safe place to explore, and yet, it’s the only shelter from the rain. Dark, dilapidated, full of rusting metal and forgotten documents and discarded tapes and the remains of animatronics, in which other, meatier remains have forcibly come to rest.

Spirits stir. Anyone who walks these halls, carefully picking their way through debris, perhaps a flashlight illuminating their path, is seen by more than just the vermin and insects that might otherwise reside in abandoned buildings.

For the animatronics have eyes; their souls do, too, and not all are friendly.

How fortunate, then, that the one that moves now is not the blue rabbit.
