What are those claws on Bone's paws? Bird toes? How are they sticking to him?
Yep! In the original books, BloodClan claws are "reinforced with dog's teeth", and that bugged me because dog teeth are dull and made for crushing and wouldn't work best with infamously sharp cat claws. It took me about three years, but I finally landed on the idea that BloodClan uses hot tar to glue the talons and first few digits of birds of prey to their paws. Only Scorch, Bone, and Brick have a full set. Their best warriors can eventually earn a talon for their thumbs, reinforcing their dewclaws alone.
For a while, I painted the tar on the paws, but it kinda muddied up the design, so my thought is they only use a very small amount that won't show. It would also be better for their health, as burning hot tar isn't the safest "glue" to work with.

Burn, Blush, Blaze (a Todomomo fanfic)
Summary: A series of moments with Yaoyorozu that show Todoroki a different side to his least favorite color. Rating: T | Word Count: 4,325 Read on AO3 or continue reading below the cut
Todoroki is the first to change into his hero costume. The glowing red eyepiece is tacky, but overall, he’s satisfied with the way the ice side completely covers his left half. He leans against the wall and crosses his arms, awaiting the rest of his classmates.
Not thirty seconds pass before the girls’ locker room door opens, and Yaoyorozu steps out. Her costume is something he’d expect more from an R-rated hero like Midnight and not so much the sophisticated Yaoyorozu heiress. Her back is ramrod straight, posture ostensibly firm and confident, but there’s a bashfulness in the way she starts to cross her arms over her chest before dropping them again. Despite knowing this is her meant to be her public hero costume, he feels the need to give her privacy, so he looks away. He hears the stretch of fabric as she tugs at it. “Your costume is quite creative, Todoroki-san,” she remarks, drawing his eyes back towards her. She’s forcing herself to smile, but there’s an twitch in her cheek that belies her discomfort. “Did they not design yours the way you wanted?” he asks bluntly, because really, it’s almost painful to watch someone as poised as her fidget in a costume like that. She grimaces and attempts to wave away the notion with her hand and a polite chuckle. “Ah, well…” She trails off, looking down at the ground for a second before jerking her head back up. She keeps her chin up as she speaks. “I admittedly did not give them much to go by. I clarified the nature of my quirk and added small preferences, such as the color, but I thought it best to defer to the judgment of the professionals in regards to the costume design itself.” He snorts. “You should send it back if you don’t like it. I’m sure you can afford to make some modifications.” She shakes her head. “No, I… There’s nothing wrong with it. It fits the needs of my quirk.” By now, he can hear the voices of his classmates as they approach the locker room door. He considers telling Yaoyorozu that just because she can tolerate it doesn’t mean she should. Or that it’s foolish to make herself uncomfortable in battle, thereby compromising herself, just because she’s too passive to cause a scene. It all feels like too much effort though, and so he doesn’t bother. Instead, he pushes himself off the wall and tells her, “Red is an ugly color though.” He doesn’t wait to hear her rebuttal, instead mingling with the crowd of 1-A students as they journey down the tunnel to meet All Might. --- Exam season at U-A is no joke. Every teacher goes all out, demanding end of semester projects, exams, and presentations. While Todoroki isn’t particularly worried about his grades, it doesn’t change the fact that it is in fact a heavy workload that keeps him up later than usual doing schoolwork. As if all that isn’t bad enough, Present Mic-sensei just had to go and make the English presentations a partnered assignment. Each pair was supposed to come up with a five minute conversation, on any plausible topic, entirely in English. He’d be grading them on grammar, of course, but also pronunciation and fluidity of the conversation. Todoroki typically dreads groupwork, but even he’s aware he lucked out in getting paired with the top student in the class, Yaoyorozu. When he arrives at her home that same weekend to work on the assignment together, she greets him at the door in English. “Welcome to my home!” He replies in Japanese. “Where should I put my stuff?” “Ah, um, right this way.” After he’s taken off his shoes, she guides him through several long hallways to what looks like a spacious, Western-style dining room, complete with a polished wood table large enough to seat most of their class. There’s a stack of notebooks in front of one seat, so Todoroki settles into the one across from it. Yaoyorozu hovers in the entryway. “What kind of tea do you like? We have Darjeeling, Ceylon, Assam, Rooibos, Gyokuro, Chai, Sencha- ” “Sencha is fine,” he says, cutting her off before she can go any further. Then, because he feels bad for interrupting her, he adds, “Thanks.” He takes the opportunity while she’s off preparing the tea to begin outlining his idea for their presentation. It is a bit boring to go the route of a transfer student asking a current student about his new school, but it would serve the purpose well as he could ask a bunch of mundane questions that Yaoyorozu would answer with ease. It’d be easy to drag it out for the full time, and it was a relevant topic, given that they are indeed students. That should satisfy the teacher. By the time she returns, he’s already written out a good third of their lines. At this rate, they’d be done in no time. His scribbling is interrupted by the gentle clink of a teacup and saucer being placed in front of him. Steam rises from the ornate porcelain, bringing with it the delicate scent of green tea. “Oh, you’ve already started?” she asks, bringing a second teacup over to her side of the table. If Todoroki had been paying more attention, he might have noticed the disappointment in her voice. Instead, he just lets out a grunt, glancing over his work thus far. “It’s a little simple, but it should do for the purposes of the assignment. I just need you to memorize your part once I’m done.” “Yes, of course,” Yaoyorozu says hurriedly, pulling a white notebook towards her and flipping through the pages. She doesn’t get very far before she lets out a noise of frustration and slams the book shut, reaching for another one instead. This one is apparently the right one because she continues to turn through it until she’s somewhere in the middle. A quick glance across the table shows him that the pages contains lists of English idioms and colloquial phrases. “How silly of me,” she mumbles, rolling her eyes at herself in a self-deprecating fashion. “How could I mix them up? English is obviously purple.” “What?” All of his notebooks are black. She doesn’t glance up from her notes as she recites, “English is purple, history is red, science is green, classical Japanese is yellow, and math is white. Some are more flexible than others, like when you get to the nuances of the different sciences, but for the most part, I think that’s the most accurate subject to color matchup.” He shakes his head. “What does that even matter?” She flushes, looking a little embarrassed, but doesn’t let her posture slouch as she explains. “Studies have shown that color coordinating while note-taking helps you retain the information better. Plus, every subject has a different feeling, so it helps to match them to their respective color.” He trusts what Yaoyorozu is saying to be true, but the twinkle in her eyes makes him think that maybe she does it just for fun; honestly, it just seems like a waste of time to him. He looks down at his own monochrome notebooks, lips pressed together in a thin line. Yaoyorozu seems to be waiting for a response from him though, so he bites back a sigh and meets her expectant gaze. “In that case, you’ve got it wrong,” he says, “English is yellow. And science is black.” She tuts at him disapprovingly, but fails to hide her smile. “And what makes you say that?” He thinks to their English teacher, the resident Voice Hero; he thinks of American TV shows, action-packed Hollywood films. “Yellow is… loud, so it’s most like English. Black is straightforward. Factual. Like science.” “I see,” she says, nodding sagely. “I can understand why you might think that, but science is actually a lot more mutable than people believe. With every new thing we discover, our facts change. That’s why I think it’s actually green. Our well of scientific knowledge is constantly growing.” He blinks in surprise; she had clearly given this topic a lot of thought. Whether or not the topic actually warranted that much consideration was up for debate, but he couldn’t deny that her logic was sound. “I’ll give you that one,” he says begrudgingly. “And the history one, too.” She claps her hands together, excited. “Yes! I’m glad we can agree on that much. History is just so… rich and steady. There’s so much there just waiting for us to learn from the past.” “What?” Todoroki stares at her as if she had just used her quirk to grow an extra head. “That’s not why.” “Well then, what do you-” “History is ugly.” His voice is as hard as his gaze. “It’s full of awful mistakes, turmoil and anguish. There’s bloodshed, revolution. The stories we hear are never how things actually happened.” “That’s true, b-” He shakes his head. “Let’s get back to the assignment.” Yaoyorozu hesitates, looking for a moment as if she’ll argue further, but once Todoroki redirects his gaze to his notebook, her face falls and she sighs. “Of course. Let me help.” Despite the shift in conversation, the topic lingers in Todoroki’s mind. It’s hard for it not to when the Yaoyorozu home is steeped in the color: the polished wood of the bookcases is a warm maroon, the detailing on his teacup crimson on ivory, and even the cardigan Yaoyorozu has draped over the back of her chair is a vibrant, eye-catching red. It’s a little frustrating how inescapable the color is. And yet, the words “rich and steady” stick with him, painting the scene surrounding him. He tries to see it through her eyes, and for a split second, he thinks he almost understands it. Her home is warm, comforting, and no doubt full of endless opportunities for her. Nothing at all like the hardships and loneliness of his own childhood. So as much as he disagrees, he can’t bring himself to want to taint the beauty of it for her any more than he already has. He stays silent, working steadily through their assignment until he has it all written out in his notebook. He waits for her to copy it down, ignoring how frantically she scribbles, the hushed apologies she mutters for her slow pace. They don’t really converse again after that until it’s time for him to leave. She escorts him to the door, cardigan wrapped tightly around herself. “I’ll see you tomorrow,” he says. For a second she looks like she might be on the brink of saying something, but she bites her lip and pushes a smile toward him instead. “Right. See you around.” Her expression confuses him, but he leaves without giving it a second thought. It isn’t until the end of the week, when he’s bound by their teacher’s capture weapon, suspended over the caltrops Aizawa laid out that he realizes maybe he shouldn’t be so quick to judge a book by its cover. --- The dinner roster says it’s his turn to cook, along with Iida, Ashido, and Yaoyorozu. It only takes a few minutes to realize why that’s a terrible combination, as none of them are particularly good cooks. The class reps assure him that they can follow a recipe easily enough, so he and Mina are delegated to chopping up vegetables. It’s a simple task that they finish in no time, even with Ashido pausing every now and then to peer over at the fragrant pan sizzling in front of Todoroki. “Ashido-san, please,” Iida scolds, standing between them to bodily prevent her from getting too close to the hot pan. “As your class president, I would feel responsible if you were to get burned on my watch.” “Boo, you’re no fun,” she complains, but returns dutifully to her task of scooping all the chopped veggies into a bowl and passing it over. Before she can make another attempt at the pork, Iida assigns her the next task of setting the table with him. The sound of her whining is easy to hear even as they transition into the dining room. Yaoyorozu sighs. “Those two can be quite the handful,” she says fondly. Todoroki silently agrees. The timer dings, and a quick glance at the pork confirms that it is indeed cooked through. He turns off the heat. There’s a large tray set aside on the counter for him, so he dumps the pork onto the platter. He moves to the sink. “Yaoyorozu, I finished the-” He cuts himself off with a hiss as his finger strays too close to the hot metal of the pan. He drops it into the sink with a loud clatter and brings his finger up to inspect. There’s no visible mark yet, but he can tell from the throbbing that a welt will soon form on his skin. “Are you okay?” she asks, hands fluttering anxiously in front of him. “Did you burn yourself?” “Yeah, but it’s fine. I’ll just ice it,” he explains as frost travels down his shoulder. The icy trail is interrupted by a warm hand snatching his own. “Wait, don’t!” Yaoyorozu squeezes his hand in a way that causes his whole arm to tingle. The ice dissipates. “What are you doing?” Todoroki asks, watching warily as she turns on the tap. With a gentle tug, she runs his fingers under the cool water and begins to explain. “Most people think ice is the best thing for a burn because it brings the temperature down, but the thing is, ice is actually too cold for the skin, resulting in damage or in some cases, even frostbite.” The cool water feels pleasant enough on his skin that he doesn’t reply right away. Plus, there’s something about the sight of her slender fingers wrapped around his own that he finds he likes a little too much. A minute passes before he finally speaks. “I can self-regulate my body temperature, so I don’t think frostbite is a possibility for me here.” Her fingers tighten the slightest bit. “Y-Yes, well, tissue damage is still a possibility. Better to be safe than sorry.” “Okay.” He can almost see the loading bar above her head as the reality of her actions sink in for her. She hastily drops his hand and steps back, sending water drops scattering. “Well! I think you can take care of it from here. You know where the first aid kid is, right? Dry it properly, put some ointment on it before bandaging. I’m going to call everyone down for dinner.” Yaoyorozu is out of the room before he can reply, but he tries anyway. “Thank you.” The door is already swinging shut behind her. He shuts off the water and wraps a dish towel around his fingers, noting the welt blooming on his skin. It still stung, but not nearly as much as did before, a ruddy pink instead of the angry red he was accustomed to seeing from his burns. Had he glanced in the mirror when he bandaged up his injury, he would have seen that his cheeks were reddened to match. --- “Oh dear, you kids really got banged up back there! You really should be more careful.” Todoroki tunes out the rest of Recovery Girl’s lecture. He feels drained after the spar against Midoriya and Tokoyami, and Recovery Girl’s quirk only exhausted him even more. He sneaks a glance to his left, where Midoriya and Yaoyorozu are nodding fervently, listening attentively out of respect for the elderly hero. To his right, Tokoyami’s head is bowed and his eyes are closed, though whether he’s dozing or listening is hard to say. After another minute or two of scolding, Recovery Girl takes pity on them and plucks a clear container off her desk. She pops off the lid and offers the contents to each of them in turn. “Don’t think I’m rewarding you for careless behavior,” she warns, waving the jar of lollipops at them. “This is just a little treat for being good students.” “Thank you, ma’am,” Midoriya says respectfully, grinning as he picks a bright yellow lollipop from the assortment. “Yes, thank you,” Yaoyorozu echoes, picking one up at random. She and Midoriya exchange tired, but content, smiles. Tokoyami stands and bows before Todoroki has even made his own selection. “None for me, thank you. I’m trying to cut back on my sugar intake. I think I’ll go back home and rest, if you don’t mind.” “Go right ahead, dear,” she says, waving him goodbye. He shuts the door quietly. She turns back to Todoroki expectantly. “Well, young man?” “Ah.” He grabs the first one he sees, which ends up being cherry flavored. Of course. “Thanks,” he says anyway because it’s not Recovery Girl’s fault he ended up picking his least favorite kind. The three of them slide off their seats and head for the door, exhaustion weighing them down. Yaoyorozu is opening the door and stepping out into the hall, but before Todoroki can follow suit, Recovery Girl calls out to him one last time. “Ah, close the door behind you, Todoroki-kun. I need to speak to Midoriya-kun about something for a minute.” With a shrug, Todoroki does as she asks, quietly closing the door to the infirmary behind him. He turns, surprised to see Yaoyorozu apparently waiting for him in the hall. When he begins the walk back towards the classroom, she falls into step beside him. “I was doing some reflection on the battle and I think I’ve pinpointed some areas of improvement,” she begins, nodding to herself resolutely. She proceeds to explain in-depth what moves really won them the fight, the flaws of all involved parties, and how she plans to improve. Unlike Recovery Girl’s lecture, Todoroki actually makes a point to listen to it all. He even interjects with his own points every now and then, going so far as to ask for her thoughts on his fighting style. He respects her insight, and if their fight against Aizawa taught him anything, it’s that sometimes she needs to be shown that. “Even though I know Recovery Girl is right about us being careless, a part of me is still proud of us for winning the fight. Going up against Tokoyami-san again, I couldn’t help but feel like… like it was a second try from the sports festival. Like I’m finally redeeming myself.” She says the last part with a self-conscious laugh, but Todoroki only gives her a curious look. She did that a lot, he noticed. Undermine her own ambitions, her own accomplishments as if they were absurd for her to even consider. Even now, she misinterprets his gaze and scrambles to amend her statement. “Of course, I wouldn’t have been able to do that without you. Your quick reflexes came in handy as such a pivotal moment that I’m certain-” “Yaoyorozu.” He stops just short of the empty classroom, forcing her to stop and face him. He pulls the red lollipop out of his pocket and stares down at it pensively for a moment before holding it out to her. She looks down at the proffered sweet in confusion. “As thanks for your strategy during the fight. You did a good job today.” She seems torn, but behind the hesitance, he can see the glimmer of pride flicker in her eyes. “But that one is yours. Recovery Girl already gave me one.” “I don’t like cherry,” he says simply, “Besides, red’s your favorite color, isn’t it?” “Todoroki-kun.” Surprise flits over her face, only to be replaced with a brilliant smile. “Thank you.” She accepts it, fingers brushing against his. Before he can think about the weird feeling that shoots up his spine, Yaoyorozu is reaching into her pocket and thrusting a green lollipop in his direction. “As thanks for being such a good partner today,” she explains. A smile tugs at the corner of his lips as he accepts the candy from her; he always liked the sourness of green apple. Still, as he watches her unwrap her candy with barely disguised delight and pop it between her smiling lips, he can’t help but think that red has never looked quite so vibrant nor cherry quite so tasty. --- The music is uncomfortably loud, but somehow the squealing of the Class 1-A’s girls is even louder. Surprisingly, it doesn’t bother Todoroki. It’s hard to be upset when everyone is in such high spirits. The girls are effusive in their praise for each other, and even the guys exchange a few sincere compliments in between good natured ribbing. He supposes it must be something about a school dance that just puts people in a good mood, but he hasn’t pinpointed what it is yet. A nudge draws him out of his thoughts. When he turns, he Midoriya is standing beside him in an oversized green suit. He hands Todoroki a glass of punch. “It’s all pretty cool, right? Even UA’s dances are incredible,” he remarks, gesturing to the room at large. “I know I shouldn’t be surprised, but I am.” “It’s… loud,” Todoroki replies, grimacing as Present Mic screeches into the microphone. His eyes drift over to the clusters of students chatting happily. “But everyone is having fun, so I guess it’s nice.” Midoriya follows his gaze, eyes lingering where Uraraka stands alongside Asui, Jirou, and Yaoyorozu. He adjusts his tie, looking nervous. “What’s wrong?” Midoriya jumps, narrowly avoiding spilling his own punch. “Nothing!” he blurts, scratching the back of his head and laughing too loudly to be natural. Todoroki only stares at him. Midoriya deflates. “Well, I was thinking of asking Uraraka to dance with me, but I’m not a very good dancer, so I don’t want to embarrass either of us. Maybe she’d have more fun dancing with Ashido or Hagakure.” “I think she would appreciate dancing with you anyway,” he tells his friend honestly. “You two get along well. I don’t think she’d care if you’re bad at dancing.” “You’re right… I’d rather ask than not do it and regretting it. Thanks, Todoroki!” Midoriya takes a deep breath, downs the rest of his punch, and tosses the cup into a nearby trashcan. “Wish me luck.” “Good luck.”Midoriya is only a few steps away before he pauses and over his shoulder, says, “Ah, Todoroki-kun, you should follow your own advice and ask Yaoyorozu to dance. I think she’d like that.” Todoroki blinks in surprise. “What?” he says dumbly, but Midoriya is already gone. With Uraraka off on the dancefloor, Todoroki has a slightly better view of Yaoyorozu, standing in between Asui and Jirou, looking positively regal in her shimmery red dress. There’s always been a poise to her that didn’t come as easily to the other girls, a result of her polished upbringing no doubt, and lately Todoroki has found himself noticing her charm more and more. He thinks that maybe Midoriya had the right idea. He’s moving before he consciously decide to and by the time his brain catches up to what the rest of his body has decided, he’s standing in front of the trio of girls who look at him with curious, but expectant gazes. It takes him a few seconds of staring blankly back at them before he remembers he needs to speak. “Ah, Yaoyorozu, do you want to dance with me?” Her eyes widen and she brings a hand up to her cheek, looking down with a bashful smile. “Well, I...” “Of course she does, right, Yaomomo?” Jirou says, giving her friend a push forward. She stumbles forward, but Todoroki catches her hand, keeping her upright. She quietly thanks him before clearing her throat and declaring more assuredly that she would indeed like to dance with him. The slow song playing is already well underway, so it takes them a few seconds to orient themselves, listening carefully to the beat. “Oh, I should probably warn you that I’ve never danced before,” he tells her, somewhat belatedly. “That’s okay. I can teach you,” she says kindly. “Just follow my instructions. Step left, back, one, two...” They lapse into a comfortable dance of giving and taking, taking cues from each other as needed. It’s not as graceful as he’s sure she would be had she been dancing with literally anyone else, but the way she’s giggling satisfies him. The music fades into another song, but the tempo suits the pace they’ve set and so they remain in each other’s arms, moving about the dancefloor. The flush that paints her cheeks is gorgeous. Todoroki forces himself to avert his gaze, but his eyes quickly find their way back to her figure. “That color suits you,” he murmurs, and even he isn’t sure whether he’s referring to her dress or her ruddiness. Both leave him breathless. Yaoyorozu’s eyes flash in surprise, and he can feel her initial hesitance return in the form of a stilted step in the wrong direction, throwing them off rhythm. “I thought red was an ugly color,” she says softly, eyebrows drawn together. He thinks of fire and of lollipops, blood and satin; he imagines an ugly red scar being kissed away by cherry chapstick. “You changed my mind.” He sees more than hears her soft gasp, and he probably would have missed her next words had he not already been staring at her lips. “I didn’t realize… I had that much sway over you.” “Yaoyorozu, you could tell me to do almost anything and I would do it,” he says in a serious voice. He needs her to understand just how sincere he is. “I’ve told you how much I value your input.” “Anything?” He risks dipping her and is rewarded with her starry eyed gaze when it succeeds. “Anything.” Something fiery and bright burns in her eyes. Red-hot determination. “Then go out with me.” He smiles, soft and sweet. “Gladly.”

How to become a designer without going to design school
This is a guide to show yourself design.
Update: I first published this blog post over a year ago. Since then, I've gotten many emails posing for more guidance and more comfortable to follow steps, and that I finally found one: Designlab. This course wasn't around once I was learning, but man does I wish it had been – it might have made the entire process tons less daunting. I like it's that it gives you project assignments and then connects you to a design mentor who gives you feedback (they have specialized ones who work on Facebook).
Step 1. Learn to ascertain
The biggest mistake is jumping into Photoshop too fast. Learning Photoshop doesn't cause you to a designer, a bit like buying paintbrushes doesn't force you to an artist. Start with inspiration.
First, find out how to draw.
You don't need to sit during a room with a bunch of other artists trying to draw an unadorned woman.
You don't even need to get that good at drawing. Just learn some basics so you'll be comfortable sketching with a pen.
You only need to do one thing to find out the way to draw: get the book you can draw in 30 days and practice for half an hour a day for a month. I've checked out tons of drawing books, and this is often one among the simplest.
Learn graphic design theory
Start with the book Picture This. It's a storybook of Little Red Riding hood but will teach you the foundations of graphic design at an equivalent time.
Learn about color, typography, and designing with a grid. If you'll find an area class to show the fundamentals of graphic design, take it.
Go through a couple of those tutorials a day.
Learn some basics in user experience
There are tons of books about user experience. Start with these two quick reads which will get you within the right mindset:
The Design of Everyday Things
Don't Make Me Think!
Learn how to write down
Here may be a sure sign of a nasty designer: their mockups are crammed with placeholder text like Lorem Ipsum. An honest designer may be a good communicator. A genuine designer thinks through the whole experience, choosing every word carefully. Write for humans. Don't write within the academic tone; you wont to make yourself sound smart in-class papers.
Read Made to Stick, one among my favorite books of all time. it'll teach you ways to suck in your readers.
Voice and Tone maybe a website filled with gems of excellent writing examples.
Step 2. find out how to use Photoshop and Illustrator.
Hooray! Now you've got a reasonably solid foundation – both visual and UX. You're able to learn Photoshop. I like to recommend starting with Illustrator first then moving on to Photoshop after. Illustrator is what designers use to form logos and icons.
Learn Illustrator
There are plenty of books, online tutorials, and in-person classes to find out Illustrator. Choose the design that works best for you. Here are the books I found especially helpful to find out the fundamentals of Illustrator:
Adobe Illustrator Classroom in a Book – It's boring, but if you get through a minimum of half it, you'll know your way around Illustrator pretty much.
Vector Basic Training – This book teaches you ways to form things in Illustrator that look good.
Now for the fun stuff! Follow these online tutorials and be impressed by what you'll make. Here are two of my favorites – a logo and a scenic landscape.
Learn Photoshop
There are 1,000,000 and one tutorials out there. Tons of them are crap. Fortunately, there are sites with really top quality tutorials. PSDTuts by TutsPlus is one among them.
Here's a simple photoshop tutorial to form an iPhone app.
Here's another good photoshop tutorial to make an internet site mockup.
Carve out an hour or two a day to travel through some tutorials, and you'll be impressed by how quickly you progress.
Step 3. Learn some specialties
Do you want to style mobile apps? Websites? Infographics? Explore all of them, and pick and choose those you enjoy to urge better at them.
Learn Logo Design
Learn how to form a logo that doesn't suck: Logo Design Love
You'll want to require it a step further than a logo, though. Learn to make a uniform brand – from the web site to the business cards. Inspect this book, Designing Brand Identity.
Learn Mobile App Design
Start with this tutorial to urge your feet wet on visual design for mobile apps.
Read this short but very comprehensive and well-thought-out book on iPhone design: Tapworthy. it'll teach you ways to form an app that looks good and straightforward to use.
Geek out on the apps on your phone. Critique them. What works and what doesn't?
Learn Web Design
Read Don't Make Me Think to find out how to make an internet site that folks find it easy to use and navigate.
Read The Principles of Beautiful Web Design if you would like help making an internet site look good.
Make an inventory of the websites you think that are beautifully designed. Note what they need in common.
Now for the hairy question of whether you would like to understand HTML/CSS as a designer: It depends on the work. Knowing it'll offer you a foothold within the job market. Albeit you don't want to be an internet developer, it helps to understand some basics. That way, you recognize what's possible and what isn't.
There are numerous excellent resources to find out HTML and CSS:
My favorite free one is Web Design Tuts.
My favorite paid one (pretty affordable at $25/month) is Treehouse. If you're ranging from the start and need someone to elucidate things clearly and comprehensively, splurge for Treehouse tutorials.
Step 4. Build your portfolio
You don't get to attend a flowery design school to urge employment as a designer. But you are doing need a solid portfolio.
How does one build a portfolio if you're starting for the primary time? The great news is you don't get to work on real projects with real clients to create a portfolio. Structure your side projects. Here are a couple of ideas:
Design silly ideas for t-shirts.
Find poorly designed websites and redesign them.
Got a thought for an iPhone app? Mock it up.
Join a team at Startup Weekend and be a designer on a weekend project.
Enter a 99 designs contest to practice designing to a quick.
Do the graphic design exercises within the Creative Workshop book.
Find an area nonprofit and offer to design for free.
Resist the temptation to incorporate everything you've ever designed in your portfolio. This is often an area for your most vital work only.
Steal, steal, steal initially. Don't worry about being original – which will come later, once you're more comfortable with your craft. Once you learn an instrument, you find out how to play other people's songs before composing your own. The same goes for design. Steal like an artist.
Go to Dribbble for inspiration on a number of the simplest designers. Inspect pttrns for iOS inspiration, and patterntap for website inspiration.
Step 5: Get employment as a designer.
When I first started learning design, I visited an employment search workshop for designers. I walked into an area filled with designers who had far more experience than I did – 5, 10, 15 years experience. All of them were trying to find jobs. That wasn't very safe. There I used to be, trying to show myself design, knowing I used to be competing with these experienced designers.
And yet six months later, I got a design job. There was one key difference between many opposite designers that gave me an edge and me: I knew how to work with developers.
The most significant factor to spice up your employability is to be ready to work with developers. Learn some interaction design. Learn some basic HTML and CSS. Designers within the tech industry (interaction designers, web designers, app designers) are in too high demand and are paid well. That's where the roles are immediate.
If you don't have any experience working with developers, get some. Attend Startup Weekend, attend hackathons, or find a developer through a project collaboration site.
Make a private website and make your portfolio the centerpiece.
Go out and make serendipity happen – tell everyone you recognize that you're trying to find employment as a designer. You never know who might know someone.
Research companies and agencies you would possibly have an interest in. Look on LinkedIn for 2nd and 3rd-degree connections to people that work on those companies and invite intros. The most uncomplicated thanks to getting employment is thru a link. If you don't have a connection, there's still tons you'll do to offer yourself a foothold.
Once you've got the work, continue learning.
I've been at Exec for a year now and have learned plenty of the work. I hunt down designers who are far more talented than I'm and learn from them. I find design classes (good online ones are Skillshare, General Assembly, Treehouse, and TutsPlus). I work on side projects. I geek out at the planning section of bookstores. there's still such a lot to find out and to enhance on.
Keep your skills sharp, and always continue learning.

Hats
A two-part homily and ritual for a multigenerational service honoring parents, guides, and mentors. This homily was delivered to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of York on June 18, 2017.
(Reading: “Generation to Generation” by Antoine de St-Exupéry)
Part One: Many Hats
Our readers shared some ideas from Antoine de St.-Exupéry about how adults can help young people as they grow. You might know this writer better as the author of The Little Prince. His idea was that learning about joy, wonder, history, and identity is like learning secret passwords. Coming to church is one way we exchange passwords. Another way of thinking about the way we learn the heritage of mind and heart, laughter and tears, musings and deeds is that we learn how to put on different hats.
Maybe you have thought about hats as a symbol for a role or an identity. A hat is a symbol for a way of being known in the world or a way of understanding our place in the world. We don’t always have real hats that go with our roles, but we can imagine.
Sometimes, I am a gardener, and I need a gardener’s hat. This is a hat that helps me to work in the sun without getting quite as sunburned, and helps keep bugs out of my hair. The hat also is a form of communication. It tells other people that I am a gardener.
Sometimes, I am a runner. I need a hat that protects my eyes from the sun but doesn’t get too sweaty or blow off in the wind. When other runners see this hat, they have a hint that we have something in common.
Sometimes, I am a baseball fan. When other fans see this hat, they can say, “How ‘bout dem O’s, hon?” We have something to talk about together.
Sometimes, I like to wear hats just to be silly. This silly hat is based on the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland.
Hats are also great for pretending. Bob K. let me borrow this construction hat so that we could tell the Greek myth about Persephone becoming Queen of the Underworld.
Everybody has different hats that they wear in their regular life, or as they learn something new, or as they imagine other ways of being. If we get really good at wearing one kind of hat, if we have skills that go with the role represented by the hat, we might get a chance to teach others about that role.
The hats I have remind me of the people who taught me something. My gardening hat reminds me of my grandfather, who was a farmer. He didn’t wear a hat like this, but I think of him when I am out pulling weeds. My running hat reminds me of my cousin, who helped me finish my first race. My Orioles hat reminds me of my uncles, who coach baseball. Silly hats might remind me of my dad, who loves to tell jokes.
People of all genders can teach us how to wear our hats, and expert hat-wearers of any gender can pass that knowledge on to the next generation. Parenting is one way that we can teach and learn about hats, but it’s not the only way. Grandparents, aunts and uncles, mentors, teachers, coaches, and role models are all part of the hat-wearing tradition. I think Father’s Day is a great day to honor the people who parent, guide, and mentor others. Some of those people are our fathers, stepfathers, foster fathers, grandfathers, and uncles. Some people do the work of fathering or the work of guiding or mentoring, but their nurturing is not named as fathering. Today, I want to say thank you to all the people who wear their hats well, and who are generous and gentle and faithful in the way they help young people learn to wear their hats.
As part of today’s service, we are going to make origami hats. You’ll see some instructions on the insert in your order of service. This is a famous origami design, meant to look like a samurai helmet. We don’t have paper big enough for hats we’ll be able to wear, but maybe once you learn how to make one you can make a bigger one at home. The hats we’ll make today are symbolic.
Let’s practice now. If you don’t want to make a hat, we’ve got a few pre-made. If you need a new piece of origami paper, please let an usher know. I imagine some of you will want to make more than one helmet. Let’s make sure everyone has at least one piece of origami paper first. We can do some more folding after the service.
Start by folding the paper to make a triangle, with the colored side out … (further instructions)
Now hold onto your hats! We’ll come back to these later in the service.
Part Two: Grandpa’s Hat
My farming grandfather didn’t usually wear a straw hat when he was out in the fields. Most of the time in the summer, he wore a baseball cap that he got for free from the feed store. He wore it when he left the house early in the morning to milk the cows. He wore it when he was driving the tractor. He wore it when he was mending the fences. He wore it when he went back to milk the cows again in the evening. In the winter, sometimes he wore a wool hat with flaps over the ears for the walk to the barn, then he switched it out for the baseball cap.
My grandfather didn’t mind silence. He could be alone all day sometimes. If one of my uncles were helping or one of the grandchildren were watching, he might say a few words of observation or instruction. The most he ever spoke was to the semi-wild house cats who kept mice out of the hayloft.
When he came back in the house in the evening, he took his hat off, he took his boots off, he washed his hands thoroughly, and he washed his face. At dinner, he sat quietly and ate bread and butter while my grandmother narrated the current events of their social world. He listened to her talk about the illnesses, the successes, the phone calls, the letters, the babies, and the Dairy Board newsletter. He kept his hat off when he went to listen to the radio or watch the television.
When my grandfather was wearing his hat, he was a doer. He had work to do, responsibilities to meet, and the uncertainties of weather, plants, and animals to contend with. He could give directions and make observations so that the second and third generation coming up behind him would know something about this world when they needed to know it. He led by example more than by word, but he was teaching his family all the time about how to wear a farming hat.
Once he took his hat off, my grandfather switched from being a doer to being a listener. By listening to my grandmother, he appreciated what she did to hold the family and the community together. By listening wordlessly to his children and grandchildren, he communicated acceptance. By listening to the baseball game or the news, he stayed connected to the world off the farm, a place that seemed like another universe.
He was teaching in these hatless hours, too. He taught us that we all have different hats in our lives, and we can trade them at different times of day. He taught us that even someone who is in charge of important things lets other people lead sometimes. He showed us patience. Maybe he had an invisible hat that said “Granddad” in the evenings.
I’ve had lots of good role models in my life, people of all genders. I’ve been lucky that, on Father’s Day, it’s easy for me to think of happy memories of my Dad and my Granddad. It’s easy for me to name a bunch of men and nonbinary people I know who are doing a great job at parenting. For all of the blessings of parenting and coaching and teaching, we celebrate and give thanks.
For some people, Father’s Day brings up sadness about parents or grandparents or role models who aren’t around anymore, or for parenting that could have been better. My hope for you is that there was someone, no matter what their official title, who set a good example of being responsible and thoughtful in their role, someone who took the time to transmit the passwords to you. My hope for you is that you will learn something or that you have learned something that you can give to someone else. If you know some passwords, you can get ready to transmit them to the next generation. You can help someone get ready for the hat they are growing into. For all of the people who have guided and affirmed others, whether their nurturing has been acknowledged or not, we give thanks. For the opportunities that are before us to be that person for someone else, we celebrate.
So be it. Blessed be. Amen.
Part Three: The Ritual of the Hats
Someone taught you to wear one or more hats with pride. Someone helped you understand the meaning of your hats, and the skills that go with them. Hold in your mind and heart the name of a mentor, role model, coach, or Dad-figure who has or had a positive impact on your life. Maybe that person is your father, or someone in your life whose fathering you admire. Maybe that person guided you in another way. Silently give thanks for their influence.
On your origami hat, write the name of or draw something about the person you are holding in your mind and heart. If you can’t think of anyone, write something you know that you can teach to someone else. How will you act as a positive influence?
You are welcome to take your origami hat home with you. Alternately, you can bring your hat forward as the music plays. We’ll collect these positive memories and hopes.
For all of these Dads, Grandparents, coaches, teachers, and role models; for all the ways that humans transmit the passwords from generation to generation, we give thanks.

Mechanic: Arcana
There is a mechanic that tingled my fancy quite a bit ad that is @ozthearistocrat `s
Arcana - When ~ is revealed, [Effect]
So I decided to explore what this ability might be like
The reason this mechanic need an lengthy article instead of a short introduction is that this is something known as an A+B mechanic, meaning it requires another mechanic or theme to do its thing. Revealing cards isn`t rare but its not a common occurence either, so all the awesome Arcana cards require some other cards to show them off with.
So lets first look at revealing cards in a game of MTG
Cards can be either revealed from the hand or the library.
Most do so during the resolution of a spell or ability, or as an additional cost. Many of these can happen at instant speed.
Some effects, such as Thelepathy or Future Sight, reveal cards permanently.
Some effects, such as Polymorph, may reveal a lot of cards at once.
It might not be possible to track the position of the revealed card by the time Arcana would resolve. (Also Polymorph as an example)
An opponent may cause you to reveal cards.
It is fairly easy to reveal your entire hand (Thoughtseize yourself for example), but reasonably challenging to reveal the entire library. (Guided Passage is probably the easiest to pull that of)
Conditional tutoring makes you reveal the card.
These are the things you might want to keep in mind designing with Arcana. It should probably create effects similar to Landfall. Also try avoiding awkward timing with avaiable targets (Imagine a mandatory Giant Growth on an opposing Goblin Guide - that’d be... GG?) unless the involved risk is part of the design.
Since the intent is to make an entire set around the mechanic, lets see which colours might want to work with it. Revealing cards from the hand or the library actually greatly differ in flavour and mechanic execution. While revealing cards from the hand is deterministic in its use and has the flavour of sharing knowledge, revealing the top card(s) of your library has (or is supposed to have) an element of randomness and is usually shown as a some kind of exploration and facing the unknown. While Blue and Green are firmly established in both those aspects mechanically as well as flavourfully, White should mostly get the former while Red mostly gets the latter. For Black, thematically, it would fit as intimidation or blackmailing seem Black things to do, but since it mechanically most often reveals the opponents hand, it feels correct for Black not getting to do anything with Arcana. Which colours it appears in is of course dependend on what we are making. If we design a bunch of preconstructed decks, it would probably be best as the theme of a deck with at most three colours. In a set intended to be drafted I’d suggest it as the archetype of the UG colour pair, while the other colours are given some cards to reveal stuff for value to create some off-archetype synergy.
What setting would this mechanic fit?
The strategic choices involved in revealing cards and thus information would be completely wasted in the PvE fortmat, in a normal multiplayer however it might lead to some interesting politics. The “revealing cards for value” part is also an easy way to make a certain theme matter. Wanna make Tribal matter? Reveal [tribe] for [effect]. Colours matter? Reveal any number of cards from your hand. For each [colour] card revealed this way, [effect]. CMC matters? Card types matter? Just show ‘em!
Flavourfully, it feels like some sort of divination or soothsaying, so a world that incorporates these elements would be a good fit. Another take on the flavour is the political aspects of sharing and denying information, so that might work as well.
The last thing I want to mention is the name. Arcana - I’m no native english speaker, but I believe most of you had to look it up, too. It is somewhat relatable once you have been initiated to it’s meaning, but Omen or Foreshadow seem somewhat more grokkable.
Ok, some Designs!
I got a trick, y’know - {G} - Instant
Target creature gets +2/+2 until end of turn./
Arcana - When you reveal ~ , you may have target creature get +1/+1 until end of turn.
Chumping is futile - {2}{G} - Instant

The Best of B2B Marketing Content: 10 Examples
Here at HubSpot, some of the most awe-inspiring moments take place when we get to take new products and features for a test drive. We transform, if it's even imaginable, into even bigger geeks than we normally are, squealing with the excitement typically reserved for iPhone launches and new seasons of Netflix series.
But alas -- this glee is caused by software we use every day at work, and will eventually get to share with other marketers.
Many B2B marketers have seen B2C content at least once and asked, "Why do they get to have all the fun?" But the moments like the one we described above are the ones that remind us: B2B companies are just as passionate about their products as B2C companies are. And for every B2B product, there are even more B2B users out there looking for information, inspiration, and knowledge to provide them with solutions.
The point? No marketing, including content, is uninteresting if you look at it certain ways.
Done right, B2B content marketing can certainly match -- and sometimes, maybe even rival -- the creativity and appeal of the best B2C ones. And we want to recognize the brands that are breaking that mold and creating great content that grows fervent, dedicated audiences.
Below, you'll find a few of our favorites, all with their own B2B marketing strategies that you can take with you.
10 Exceptional B2B Content Marketing Examples
1. CB Insights: Newsletter
What It Does Well
There are two things I love about the CB Insights newsletter. First, it's surprisingly funny (the subject lines alone make it worth it). Second, you learn a lot just by reading the newsletter, no need to click through a bunch of links.”
- Janessa Lantz, HubSpot Senior Marketing Manager
We love how this newsletter illustrates the willingness of CB Insights to not take itself too seriously. Yes, it shares some of the finest insights on technology, venture capital (VC), and emerging businesses, but it does so with fun images that ultimately relate back to the subject -- e.g., the above photo of Oprah that’s been adapted as a meme, since, well, that was the topic of the newsletter.
But the messaging remains relevant, even among the hint of silliness. After all, CB Insights designs technology for people in the VC space, so it’s tasked with creating content that will appeal to a broad audience: customers, prospective customers, tech enthusiasts, and investors. And so, under such subject lines as “so sad: tough to have a VC dad,” it includes relevant data. Yes, gifs are hilarious -- but in some contexts, they’re also worth $147 million.
Takeaway for Marketers: Remember Your Buyer's Goals
When you’re dying to create truly unique, cutting-edge content, it’s easy to stray from your organization’s mission and focus.
So, while it’s great to think outside of the box, use clever subject lines, or even write every email with an overarching humorous tone -- keep it relevant and include the information that the people reading it signed up to receive in the first place. Then, keep it human.
2. Mattermark: Raise the Bar
What It Does Well
Raise the Bar rounds up the best stories about a variety of different industries, giving me a great snapshot of trends to watch and news stories to follow without having to search for them myself."
- Sophia Bernazzani, Editor, HubSpot Customer Success Blog
One of the best things about well-curated content -- especially the kind that pertains to your line of work -- is that it eliminates a lot of work. Keeping up with news and trends is never easy when you’ve already got a full plate, so when someone else is able to hand-pick the things you need to know, it can feel like you’ve struck gold.
That’s what Raise the Bar does, by compiling a “daily digest of timely, must-read posts on sales, marketing and growth engineering.” And, that was the intent all along. In a 2016 blog post announcing the launch of the newsletter, Mattermark’s Co-founder and CEO, Danielle Morrill, wrote, “We’re turning our focus toward sifting through the mountains of content out there around sales, marketing, and growth to help the community of DOERS who grow companies.”
Takeaway for Marketers: Educate Your Buyers
Think about the problems that your product or service already aims to solve for customers. Then, turn that into relevant content that’s going to both save time for and inform your audience -- and make it easy for them to access it.
3. MYOB: Tax Time
What It Does Well
MYOB, a provider of business management solutions in Australia and New Zealand, helps companies manage their finances, in part by connecting them with bookkeepers and financial services professionals. It has two main buyer personas:
Small businesses that are just learning the ropes
More established companies that need greater insight into all facets of their operations.
Each audience has its own set of concerns and corresponding hub of information on MYOB.com -- and MYOB has built a B2B content marketing strategy for each one that shows how much it understands its customers.
MYOB recognizes that many businesses are figuring out accounting and financial decisions as they grow, so it’s created content that positions the brand as a go-to resource to help those businesses navigate each stage of their development. The Tax Time center, for example, is angled to fit the needs of both customer groups, providing tips for those just starting out, and guides for breaking through new stages of development.
Takeaway for Marketers: Grow With Your Buyers
When you begin to brainstorm and map out ideas for content, ask yourself, “Do I really understand my audience?” If you have any doubts as to how the idea will benefit or be useful to your audience, the answer might be “no” -- and that’s okay. Like everything else, audiences (and people) evolve, so it’s okay to go back to the drawing board in instances like these for a refresh.
4. Unbounce: Page Fights (R.I.P.)
What It Does Well
If you’ve ever seen a growth marketer on the heels of a successful optimization experiment, you know that her energy is electric. Unbounce, a landing page software company based in Vancouver, understands that excitement and decided to leverage it to create an engaging microsite, Page Fights, in collaboration with optimization company Conversion XL.
The project came to a close after one year, but during its existence, Page Fights contained live streams of marketing optimization expert panels who critiqued landing pages in real time. It was content that expanded far beyond the written word -- and that was one thing that made it so great.
Sure, Unbounce has a successful blog, but it saw Page Fights as an opportunity to expand beyond that copy. It knew that the web -- especially within marketing and web design -- was becoming increasingly crowded with content. To address that, it diversified the format of its expertise, to keep its audience engaged and learning.
Takeaway for Marketers: Diversify Your Channels
The internet is only going to become more crowded. And as the human attention span dwindles, that makes it even more important to create content that engages and maintains your audience’s attention.
So while we don’t recommend abandoning blogs completely -- after all, written content is still vital to SEO -- we do emphasize the importance of diversifying content formats. Marketers who incorporate video into their content strategies, for example, have seen 49% faster revenue growth than those who don’t. And remember that tip to “keep it human” we mentioned earlier? That’s a great thing about live video in particular -- it can help portray brands (and their people) as candid and genuine.
5. Deloitte Insights
What It Does Well
Deloitte is a professional services company specializing in consulting, tech, auditing, and more. It works with a massive cross-section of industries, from government agencies to life sciences -- and that broad range of knowledge is a major selling point. That’s why creating informed, useful content for individual, specialized audiences is core to its marketing strategy.
But Deloitte has also used that wealth of knowledge to position itself as a resource for those who want to know what it knows. So, among its specialized hubs are educational content centers, including Deloitte Insights (formerly branded Deloitte University Press).
Much like some of the other remarkable B2B content we’ve come across, it curates not only different pieces of highly helpful content -- but also a variety of content formats. From blog posts, to webcasts, to podcasts, Deloitte Insights has a bit of everything for those who want to learn about its specialties and the industries it works with.
Takeaway for Marketers: Separate Your Buyer Personas
Creating a content strategy to please a wide-scale audience like Deloitte’s is challenging. It can quickly become unfocused. But if your company has a number of specialties, creating content microsites for each of them is one way to keep that information organized, discoverable, and easy to navigate.
Plus, it can never hurt to establish your brand as a go-to resource. So, as you create these content hubs, consider adding a “knowledge center” among them that’s dedicated to teaching your audience the valuable things it wants to learn.
6. First Round Magazines
What It Does Well
Here’s another example of a brand that does a great job of leveraging different categories of knowledge. First Round, an early-stage VC company, recognized the knowledge among entrepreneurs and leaders that wasn’t being shared -- knowledge that could be highly beneficial to their peers -- and created the First Round Review as a place for it to be shared. It serves, reads the manifesto, to liberate the ideas and expertise that are “trapped in other people's heads.”
But liberating that much-untapped knowledge can lead to the same problem we alluded to above -- an unfocused mass of content that makes it difficult to discover exactly what you’re looking for. That’s why First Round organized the Review into a collection of nine online magazines, each specializing in a different aspect of building a business.
Takeaway for Marketers: Work With Thought Leaders
If you’ve ever wondered how to leverage the wealth of knowledge outside of your organization -- and inside your professional network -- here’s a great example.
Don’t be afraid to reach out to the entrepreneurs and leaders you’ve met, or simply just admire, to figure out how they can work with you to create content with teachable experiences that your audience will value. Sharing useful, relatable first-hand accounts conveys empathy, which helps to invoke trust among readers.
7. NextView Ventures: Better Everyday
What It Does Well
We absolutely love stumbling across B2B companies with an active presence on Medium. A great example is VC firm NextView Ventures' Better Everyday, a Medium publication that focuses on “stories, analyses & resources to help seed-stage founders redesign the everyday.”
But why would NextView want to create an entirely separate blog that isn’t even on its website? Well, it’s an exercise in creating off-site content: the material you own but doesn’t live on your website. When executed correctly, it can give publishers a huge boost in discoverability, variety, and quality, especially when making use of a highly popular platform like Medium.
Because Better Everyday isn’t attached to the company’s main URL, it provides an opportunity for NextView to experiment with different tones, voices, and stories -- all from a variety of experts that might already be using Medium to discover and contribute unique content. Plus, with Medium’s built-in ability for people to recommend, highlight, and search internally for relevant content, it makes the work published there that much more shareable.
Takeaway for Marketers: Publish Off-Domain Content
Take advantage of the availability of off-site content platforms. As my colleague, Sam Mallikarjunan, writes in “Why Medium Works,” it can take up to six months of consistent publishing on your company’s blog before it gains significant traction. (And we’re not discouraging that -- stick with it, and find ways to supplement those efforts.) But off-site content diversifies your audience by engaging readers who might not have otherwise found your website.
Medium, for example, connects your content with the people most likely to read it. Plus, you’re creating a publication on a platform that comes with a built-in audience of at least 6.3 million users.
8. Wistia: Instagram
Want to capture glorious shots like this with a DSLR camera? Head over to the Library for everything you need to know (dog sold separately). Link in bio!
A post shared by Wistia (@wistia) on Apr 24, 2017 at 11:58am PDT
What It Does Well
At risk of sounding like a broken record, we can’t emphasize enough the importance of B2B brands maintaining a human element. That’s why we like it when companies use social media channels to give audiences a “look inside” at the people who make the great products and services they love.
Wistia, a video hosting platform, does that particularly well by sharing visual content on Instagram that lifts the curtain on its people -- and dogs. It not only aligns with its brand -- after all, the company does provide technology to businesses that want hosting solutions for their visual content -- but it’s also just smart. Among its other advantages, visual content can help boost a viewer’s retention of things like brand information.
Takeaway for Marketers: Incorporate Visual Content
Please, please, please don’t neglect to incorporate visuals into your content strategy. Of course, having a presence on visually-focused channels like Instagram and YouTube is vital -- but when it comes to your written content, don’t afraid to use visuals there, as well. After all, articles with an image once every 75-100 words got double the number of social shares than articles with fewer images.
But if you can also create content that aligns with the core of your product or service, that’s also great. As we mentioned before, Wistia creates visual content technology -- so it makes sense that it would have unique visual content. Identify what your business does particularly well, and then make the most use of the channel that best aligns with your strengths.
9. Zendesk Engineering
What It Does Well
Yes -- more offsite content. This time, it’s from Zendesk, a maker of customer service software that’s done something unique with its Medium publication, Zendesk Engineering.
Zendesk might be an expert in the solutions provided by its product, but behind that product is a chorus of highly skilled experts -- the people who build and engineer the software. The company realized that there’s an audience to be tapped that’s seeking insights and expertise on the technical side of the product, so it used that to build an entirely independent content property.
Takeaway for Marketers: Tell Your Brand Story
Dig beneath the surface of the solutions your company provides. You offer solutions -- but what is your process? What have you learned that makes you do what you do so well, and how did you get there?
Sure, topics like engineering might be traditionally “unsexy.” But when leveraged and communicated in a storytelling manner, they can make for remarkable content.
10. Hexagon: Annual Report
Image via App Annie
What It Does Well
Who says written content needs to be two-dimensional?
For Hexagon, an industrial IT solutions provider, "AR" doesn't just stand for annual report. With that in mind, the company recently "augmented" a presentation to its investors in a creative way.
Hexagon used augmented reality (AR) to spruce up their written company report, giving investors a more interactive experience when learning the latest updates on the company. How does it work? A mobile app, based on technology from Samsung and zSpace, displays a virtual demonstration of a product when readers hold their mobile device over a "trigger image" of that product within the report.
Takeaway for Marketers: Challenge Your Buyers
It's easy to feel limited by your medium as you create content -- especially for a business audience who you've all agreed is comfortable with that medium.
But in order for content to convert readers and incite growth, it needs to occasionally disrupt its audience's point of view. A company doesn't work for its content; content works for its company. If you need to say something that a blog alone can't, the business demands that you make it work -- whether that means starting a YouTube channel or seeing how you can integrate an AR tool into your next ebook.
And the List Goes On
We’re optimistic that the digital realm is full of strong B2B content marketing efforts -- and, we want to hear about them. But even more than that, we want to hear how these examples inspire you. As they show, there's a world of content opportunities out there, just waiting for creative B2B marketers to take on.
