Day 19 ~ Jadon Sancho
Gaming Together
Tumblr media
April 2020//30 Day Writings
“Do you want to play?” Jadon asked. He had been playing FIFA against a few of his mates near enough all day whilst you had sat next to him, legs over him with your laptop on your stomach just watching random tv series and other things. You were pretty bored but didn’t have anything else to do and Jadon was having fun playing his game and you didn’t want to ruin that. You would just continue on your laptop until Jadon wants to do something which could be at any time.
“What?” You asked taking your headphones out. He had hit your leg slightly so it was the only reason you knew he was talking to you.
“Do you want to play a game together?” Jadon repeated. Looking at the screen you saw that the game was finished and that Jadon had left whatever he was on.
“FIFA?” You asked. It was already in and on so it would save either of you moving at the moment.
“Do you know how to play?” Jadon asked you, passing you the remote to the games console. It couldn’t be that hard. Jadon plays it. You laughed at your little joke in your head before answering Jadon’s questions.
“Slightly,” You replied not really giving him the whole story but you knew what would happen if you said you weren’t very good.
“Come here,” Jadon said, patting his lap letting you know that he wants you to sit there. You placed your laptop on the table before sitting comfortably between his legs. His arms made their way around your waist and held onto the controller over your hands. What Jadon didn’t know was that you could already play FIFA and you were actually okay at it. Not a professional no way but better then what you’re playing at the moment. Would you pass up the opportunity to sit on Jadon’s lap and let him teach you how to play? Definitely not. You would pretend until Jadon asks to play against you that you will show how good you are at it knowing that he will ask. He likes the confidence after beating you at things.
“So pick a team to play against the computer,” Jadon said, allowing you to scroll through the many teams that they had. Instantly you went to the Bundesliga to find Borussia Dortmund wanting to play as Jadon.
“Okay, now pick the other team that the computer will be playing as,” He smiled when he saw the team that you were playing as. Obviously, he would be happy that you were playing with him. He’s always happy when you’re playing with him. You thought for a couple of seconds thinking about what team would be best to play against when finally the perfect team hit you. You scrolled until you saw Bayern Munich come up onto the screen and pressed okay. It was either them or Schalke that made the most sense and it would be fun trying to beat Dortmund’s biggest rivals on FIFA.
“Okay, let’s start the game,” Jadon said to you. You nodded and pressed the start button and all it came up with was the teams. Not really caring about the teams you pressed start again and the game began to load up. You sat there tracing Jadon’s tattoos until the game would actually start. Throughout the match, he would guide your hands to the correct buttons and tell you what to press. He would tell you when to pass and shoot and also press the buttons for you with his hands placed on yours. He would sometimes tell you too late so you would miss an easy chance but it didn’t really matter because you managed to put some in the back of the net and every time you did Jadon would kiss the back of your neck. The game ended with you winning three-one and Jadon decided that he wanted to play as well.
“Now that you’ve had a little bit of practise time to play against me,” Jadon said, picking up the other remote to join in. Reluctantly you got off of his lap and sat down next to him not wanting Jadon to use that as an excuse when you beat him. He would use any excuse to explain why he lost to you. Your phone was next to you so when he loses you can quickly film it and his reaction to it knowing that he would never admit to losing it. You would need proof. Hopefully, you do beat him.
“Pick your team and then we will start,” You said, scrolling through the teams you tried to decide which one was best. You saw him pick Borussia Dortmund, obviously, so you went to pick a different team not wanting to play as Dortmund. Scrolling through them all you finally settled on a team, PSG. Jadon just nodded his head and began the game. Nothing really happened in the first 25 minutes of the time although Jadon did have quite a few shots none of them went in. Your team had the ball and Neymar was dribbling up the side with it and passed it to Mbappe who for some reason had cut into the middle. You were confident that you were going to score. Pressing the pass button the ball got passed back to Neymar who you made take a first-time shot.
“1-0,” You shouted when you saw the ball go into the net.
“Lucky goal,” He said, shaking his head and kicking off near enough straight away not giving you a chance to celebrate properly. It wasn’t long until Jadon equalised making it 1-1 at half time. You wiped your hands on your trousers to try to get rid of the sweat on them because the controller was starting to slip out of your hands before grabbing it and starting the second half. Jadon scored 5 minutes into the second half. Shaking your head you sat forward to properly to actually concentrate you weren’t going to lose this match. Around the 70th minute, you scored your second goal equalling the score. ‘Come on’ You whispered to yourself knowing that you could win the game. The game went on to added time because of the number of fouls there were and it was your last time to attack. At the last second, you pressed the shoot button and watched as the ball went into the net you knew that there was no time for Jadon to score so you knew you had won but you didn’t celebrate until that whistle blew.
“I win,” You shouted, grabbing your phone recording the screen and Jadon’s reaction to you winning. He just placed his hand over your camera so that it couldn’t see anything but you kept on moving the camera to capture his reaction and the score that was the TV. You did end up turning the camera off and just enjoyed beating Jadon.
“Let’s play a different game,” Jadon grumbled, taking out FIFA and going to look at the other games that he has. This just made you laugh even harder. You knew he hated losing to you but you never knew how bad he actually took it. Eventually, you managed to stop laughing and move towards Jadon to help him pick a game.
You and Jadon spent the rest of the day and night playing a bunch of random games on the console. Sometimes against each other, sometimes with each other or sometimes it was a one-player game so the other watched and advised them. It was a lot of fun especially when you would win because of his reaction. He would say that it didn’t bother him that you won but you knew that it wasn’t true. But it was a lot of fun playing the games with Jadon especially when you were on the same team because none of you would be complaining about the other cheating. It was nice to just spend time with Jadon and play games. It would definitely happen again.

18, 25, 36, 39, 72 & 73 :D
18. A team you think is a true dark horse in the game today: oof wow. what a start. :D well, in our match... both teams were the dark horse, whoops. but i guess we were a bit more of a dark horse, judging alone from the positions in the table. I’m not 100% sure but vaguely remember something about them having more money than us? well at least they have more money than we had in our second year in the bundesliga...
25. Favorite Midfielder: so apparently i need to mention him in every single answer? 👀 daniel baier. he was BRILLIANT. i miss him in every single match. ugh, kicking out a player like him is just so damn stupid DDDDDDDDD:
36. The type of football you love watching:  i hate watching football. :D nah, i love to see my team fighting. i’m okay with watching them go down if they only go down with a fight.
39. A moment in football that changed you as a person. (e.g injuries, trophies, or transfers): oh wow. i could remember 10 moments immediately. the match on the last game day of my first proper season as a stadium regular when we had this one match to avoid relegation and our goalkeeper saved a penalty and we won and it was such a beautiful day. the away match in liverpool - being so far away from home and yet, we were there to support augsburg. paul verhaegh’s transfer because it hurt for months. daniel baier’s career end because i completely lost touch with the team and it’s still only a fragment of what it used to be. oof.
72. The most embarrassing moment as a fan:  being a fan is what makes me proud D: but maybe the moment when some nürnberg fans talked to me after a match we lost against them and i was super angry but they were super nice. but we ended up having a nice talk and we even exchanged scarves :D
73. Your proudest moment as a fan:  liverpool, again. the whole day - walking through the city, seeing the ppl watching us and wondering, supporting the team throughout the whole match... and to pinpoint one moment: after the match. when we were standing in this fucking famous stadion. anfield road, damn! and we lost! we got kicked out of the europe league! but we were still singing. we just couldn’t stop singing. and we were so proud. and the liverpool fans were long gone - they already left during the match. but we were still there. nobody cared about the flight back home, nobody cared about the fact that it was a thursday night and we were in a foreign country. nobody left the stadium. we just stood there and sang and there were some augsburg fans in different parts of the stadium and they sang too. and then, the team came back onto the field and there was this sense of unity and we were all so so SO damn proud and ugh i’ll probably never love something or someone as much as i loved the club at this moment.
thanks! ♥

Translation: kicker magazine profile about Julian Brandt (July 27, 2020)
Tumblr media
By Thomas Hennecke and Matthias Dersch
Had he made this artistic pass during the corona pandemic with empty stands in the stadium, it would have been a pity. A week before Christmas however, there is almost no free space in the Signal Iduna Park left. Everybody is ripped off their seats – except the RB Leipzig fans – the moment Julian Brandt marks the second goal. Brandt digs deep into his toolbox. Receiving the pass by Sancho, processing the ball, shot. Three actions in one fluent move, south American suppleness with ice-cold efficiency, a master class. Goal of the month December.
Tumblr media
This cool blonde with the jersey number 19 – he is a man for the special moments. A player who makes a difference. And a gambler. A footballer having fun and who lets the difficult things look easy and made his relaxed demeanor a trademark. You can guess why he named Diego (the Bremer, not Maradona”, like Brandt said in BVB-TV) is his idol. The Brazilian used to have the blessings to do great things on the pitch. Diego also had a dream goal in his repertoire: 62,5 meter distance on April 20, 2007 against Alemannia Aachen. End score: 3:1.
The fact Brandt coolness also comes from a sometimes fatal way of risking things, relativizes his actions. You are torn a bit. People who appreciate show, spontaneity, art and creativity will love him more than people adding statistics and all mistakes and how they translate onto the pitch. The ‘Süddeutsche Zeitung’ looks beyond that and celebrated Brandt as a “Player with the Wow-Effect”. Brandt plays passes, so precise they will find almost every gap. As if they were managed by an electronic brain. He celebrates chop passes which look good and find their goals. But he also screws up counter chances with sloppy passes. He gives goals to his opponents with carless back passes. Or he shoots x-times against the goal, without a slightest danger to the goal keepers.
Tumblr media
2019 is the second year with coach Lucien Favre and the so-called “restart”. BVB manager Zorc took a lot of money into his hands, in order to optimize the team. Looking back he wouldn’t be as passionate about some transfers as he was back then – but the 25 million euros for Brandt are still a good and useful investment, Zorc thinks: “Julian is a talented football player and has a lot of potential. He is very active on the pitch, demanding the ball, plays in a self-confidend way and doesn’t hide.”
Then follows the “but”. Zorc follows everything very closely from his box seat on the team bench. He sees mistakes by Brandt, unnecessary mistakes – calles “unforced errors” in tennis. “He still does a lot of them”, Zorc complains. “He has still work to do when it comes to working against the ball, Julian knows that best himself.” Indeed one doesn’t have to look far to find weaknesses. He himself is his biggest critic, the professional once claimed. Yet, he never lets that sort of self-reflection get out of his hands: “I always question myself, whenever I’m not performing well. But I never question the fact that I still can do it.”
Tumblr media
It’s easy to spot: this Brandt-guy is not Mr. Perfect nor a football-playing robot. Rather he is an un-adjusted fine spirit on the pitch. Always in a good mood, with a fresh quote on his lips. During the USA-journey to Seattle last year, he was walking interested through the Museum of Pop Culture where Borussia was celebrating its “Black and Yellow night”. He had some small talk with journalists, he seems relaxed, approachable and cool. The opposite of the footballer clicheé of being arrogant. Brandt is “a fantastic guy” says Captian Marco Reus, “he’s a funny and open guy”.
As engaging, positive and uncomplicated his persona comes across: sometimes however Brandt appears to be less serious about stuff. It’s seems as if an extra scoop of ambition is missing, based on his body language. Unlike many other professionals. “I heard from many people before, about me looking like I’m sort of listlessness I embody”, Brandt said during an interview with the former BVB-player Patrick Owomoyela. Yet he assures: “My inner drive is always there.”
Brandt shows both faces during the game against Leipzig. Magical and faulty. He serves Timo Werner the 2:2-goal on a silver platter with his horrible wrong pass. “Perhaps someday there will be the award: wrong pass of the month”, says the 24 year-old. “I’m sure, I’ll get into the top 5.” BVB-boss Hans Joachim Watzke is face-palming on the stands in that moment. With some distance he likes Brandt’s way of playing. The BVB-boss says: “Julian makes extraordinary mistakes, because you can only play extraordinary if you take risky passes or have risky ideas.”
Tumblr media
Five months later, both major teams in Germany play against each other on the evening of May 26. Borussia against Bayern; light house 2 against light house 1. Dortmund has to win, otherwise the Bundesliga title will be gone and Dortmund starts in a rush. Erling Haaland gets the ball in the midfield after 17 seconds, by winning a head ball against Joshua Kimmich. From the back Brandt storms in front like a speed train, captures the situation, speeds up the game and passes over to Thorgan Hazard with his left foot. The clock ticks – 19 seconds into the game – Manuel Neuer gets out of his goal and saves the situation for Bayern at the last moment. But he passes the ball into Haalands feet. His shot rushes through Neuers feet until Jerome Boating saves it for Bayern on the goal line. Brandt goal celebration dies on his lips. The blitz goal after just one minute – it would have been his act as well.
Same game, 43rd minute. Mats Hummels defending for Dortmund, the ball moves a few meters to the left. Kimmich gets the ball, looks up, sees Roman Bürki standing a bit too far away from the goal, shoots and scores. The guy standing the closest to Kimmich: Brandt. It would have been unfair to make him responsible for the goal alone, half of the team is responsible as well. Yet some people who’s heart is beating for black and yellow would have preferred Brandt at least trying to hinder Kimmich on making his genius shot. He does: nothing.
Tumblr media
He's a day dreamer, Brandt once said. Day dreamers keep strolling through their thoughts. A study found out: day dreamers are capable finding time to dream because their brains have enough space left. In the past day dreaming was understood as a sign of lack of concentration and attention – today people see it as a sign of intelligence and creativity. Like a lost professor: brilliant, sharp mind, yet sunk into his own world.
It is however no explanation for him being passive in front of the goal in May that basically pre-decided the German championship. Brandt made his day dreamer confession in a different context – when asked about a career plan. He doesn’t have one, he said: “Everything that happens in my life, happens spontaneously. I don’t even know what I will be doing in three weeks from now.” Brandt lives his live as free and individual as possible and as disciplined as necessary. He likes to sleep long in the morning and only leave “shortly” in order to just barley making it on time at the training ground. “Every minute is sacred” he says with a wink of an eye. “I don’t know how often I had to pay a penalty for being too late.”
A year Brandt is employed in Dortmund. The statistics are showing respectable numbers. 42 games, seven goals, 13 assists, ten second-pass assists. The season prior in Leverkusen he had seven goals and 15 assists – just in the Bundesliga. He added six scorer points in the DFB Cup then and the Europa League. “I had to find my place during the first months. I played on many positions and didn’t know many of the boys yet. It’s why it was a bit un-harmonic”, says Brandt. “Nevertheless, now I’m “in”. I had a nice year with great moments. I have to say: I’m really satisfied. Everything can get much better. However its was fine for the first year.”
Brandt wanders through the BVB team, gets put into five different roles. The center midfield is the place where he can show his class the best – whenever he has the game in front of him. He can put his instincts and creativity into force and can create chances with his passes. He is basically a lost force when playing way in front. Except against Slavia Prag in the Champions League he confirmed with two assists, Favre decision putting him into the front as a striker. His abilities are also limited once he plays on the wings.
He never has a lack of commitment and engagement. Brandt is running on average 11,85 kilometers in 90 minutes. Nobody of the permanent Dortmund players is running more. He wins 52,4 % of his one-on-ones – more than Sancho (45,6%), Marco Reus (44,6%), Hazard (42,0%) or Haaland (41,4%). His passing with a 84 percent accuracy however still has room for improvement compared to the other specialists like Axel Witsel (94,1%), Dan-Axel Zagadou (91,1%) or Raphael Guerreiro (89,2%).
Tumblr media
Brandt is brilliant in games like against Gladbach (DFB Cup, kicker-grade: 1,5), against Fortuna Düsseldorf or Schalke in the Bundesliga (both 1,5). He has personal low points in Freiburg (sub in and out of the same game; grade: 5), in Munich (grade: 6) and against Milan in the Champions League, where he basically loses the ball in almost every scene. Every game becomes a personal balancing act for the highly skilled national player: he dances on a high wire – here and there he loses his grip and crashes down.
His time in Dortmund started with a glitch. He makes a mistake and drives onto the parking lot of the youth time at 7.45am in the morning. A BVB employee has to show him the way. Brandt decided to leave the comfort zone Leverkusen on purpose. “Dortmund” – he says, “Dortmund is much bigger in terms of media interest, the stadium, the number of fans and in terms of pressure. It’s a different game here. It could make a mark on me and will serve me good.” And then there is the wish to win a title which made him to transfer to Dortmund. It’s about a basic attitude in sports, Brandt said a year ago, “everybody should have the drive to win every game.”
Tumblr media
Because Dortmund only won 28 of their 46 games this past season (seven draws, eleven defeats) a lively debate about coach Favré heats up as well as a discussion about the mentality of the team. No fans will get together in Dortmund and celebrate the fifth second place finish of the team since 2013. Nobody will fill extra pages in historic club chronicles, some BVB players are now suspecting. “We are not satisfied to finish second”, Brandt confesses. “We aren’t angry, but also not satisfied. We want more.” He then sticks up for his colleagues who get criticized for some bad performances and whenever there are doubts about their mentality and the harsh criticism: “We want to the big price. The team is hungry, they are in for it to win titles. The team is capable of that. You have to always aim high.”
Children who are having their first day of school this year, have lived a life only knowing Bayern Munich as German football champions. In order for them to understand that other teams can be successful as well, Dortmund needs to win the “all-or-nothing”-games, Brandt thinks. The duels with the other Bundesliga havy weights: Bayern Munich, Leipzig, Mönchengladbach, Leverkusen. “You have to win those games, if you want to stay on top”, he says. “Yet you also have to take smaller teams seriously. Something like a 3-3 draw against Paderborn is fatal.”
Tumblr media
Borussia Dortmund gave the players four weeks vacation. This Thursday the team will come back together well rested. The months during the corona crisis, the tough hygiene rules of the German Bundesliga, left a mark on Brandt. “It does something to you”, he confesses, “you don’t see many people. You see your family, perhaps a few friends. Otherwise: nobody. You are happy to be able to go out and have some freedoms again.” Now he can go out again – at least a bit.

i made this the other night and honestly its not as cringe as i thought it would be! its a get to know the hertha players + my dumb commentary...
hertha squad smash or pass bc apparently i’m already too exhausted from school work to have a brain
1. Thomas Kraft:
Tumblr media
Legend against Frankfurt, sexy saves, but pass
12. Dennis Smarsch
Tumblr media
tall and large boi™, our future when he shapes up, pass bc he’s always posting cute shit with his gf (also gives off basic white boy vibes)
22. Rune Jarstein
Tumblr media
octopus KING, saves my life every game, along with sala my first favorite player, smash the saves, pass on the father of three daughters (me and his two actual ones)
13. Lukas Klünter
Tumblr media
squirrel man from köln that was the fastest runner in the bundesliga last year, was called most consistent man under covic and now is less so, i want him to SHINE but i also want him to stay with us forever bc i’m selfish, i cannot explain but smash 1000000%, e v e r y t h i n g .
17. Maxi Mittelstädt
Tumblr media
square faced spandau berliner boy!!! i call him maxi n cie after the quebecois grocery store but that’s neither here nor there. he’s still got some work to do but he’s getting so much better and i’m SO proud of him. more my son than anything so pass for now (emphasis on for now...)
20. Dedryck Boyata
Tumblr media
honestly what a cute and beautiful man. killer defender (we miss you! get well soon!) if it wasn’t for man city comment and connection might be smash...but looking at this pic i just want to hug him...so pass (when he comes back with them sexy tackles that answer might change)
21. Marvin Plattenhardt
Tumblr media
poor marvin...only call up was for the world cup 2018 (why i’m putting germany jersey pic here). free kick skills through the roof when it happens and solid player...pass bc not my type.
25. Jordan Torunarigha
Tumblr media
what a man WHAT A MAN! he is an INCREDIBLE defender, a MYSTERIOUS instagram caption maker, and a HEART that beats more blue and white than anyone in the world. i can’t wait to watch him flourish as an amazing german defenseman and yes that is of course a smash for my bae jordan ...
4. Karim Rekik
Tumblr media
ah karim...i always had mixed feelings about him as a defender but now i miss him...as a person i always thought he was cool. he honestly has a gorgeous face and that could be a smash just for that...but i’m gonna say pass. frustration lingers.
5. Niklas Stark
Tumblr media
ah nik...the one hertha player everyone on this site knows and loves and my one pride on the NT <3 he made me VERY MAD at the beginning of the season and that tarnished my opinion of him. but he has an incredibly attractive face and seems chill ! i think i’d smash if the chance presented itself !
11. Mathew Leckie
Tumblr media
where on EARTH did this man go?? only Australian footy man i know...tbh completely forgot how he plays at all...the mustache ruins it for me, pass
15. Marko Grujić
Tumblr media
sexy soft doe who makes dumb tackles sometimes! brilliant footballer, drools over the PL a little bit too much but i do love his love of liverpool. gives off sweetest man in the world vibes when off the pitch (on the pitch, quite the opposite). smash smash and more smash
16. Javairô Dilrosun
Tumblr media
okayyyyyy this picture gives off different vibes than i normally associate with my always smiling super talented dutchboy but i’ll take it. literally would give the world for him. please stay at hertha. we love you. originally wrote smash but i cannot legally say that...too much sun/son vibes...pass my sweet legend
18. Santiago Asacibar
Tumblr media
uggggghhh my least favorite transfer of all time. he’s ok. he’s been solid so i can’t complain. but a hard pass.
23. Arne Maier
Tumblr media
the amount of love and affection i feel toward this berliner born in 1999 man for the amount of time he has actually played in the last while is...incredible. please don’t be a dumb bitch and move and that all the headlines were just made up. you’ve been injured !! be patient !! you’re too much homegrown talent for us to squander you i promise...not my normal type but smash...
3. Per Skjelbred
Tumblr media
norwegian that gets up early and looks confused all the time. he’s been solid for us but apparently we’re selling him according to...will miss this deer in the headlights...pass
30. Marius Wolf
Tumblr media
he just transferred sometime last season and he’s bffs with EVERYONE honestly respect but the guy freaks me out of bit...can’t explain it. super inconsistent but when he’s good he’s great. his instagram hashtag under every picture is #UNLEASHTHEWOLF ... when will he be unleashed ???? hard pass tho
6. Vladimír Darida
Tumblr media
plays one (albeit incredible) game. twitter: BEST MAN OF THE VORRUNDE (honestly though some people’s opinions make me feel like i don’t understand this sport). he is pretty great though, not denying that. pass but respect. lots of it
8. Salomon Kalou
Tumblr media
if this man doesn’t get a great send off i WILL riot. incredible presence on the team, nicest happiest funniest man alive. goals that he scores when he actually gets playing time ??? beautiful. couldn’t smash this man though, he’s the uncle i never had. i’ll pass him off to someone who loves him like he loves them.......
9. Alexander Esswein
Tumblr media
couldn’t tell you much about ole essy over here...he’s not done much. he’s one of my friend’s exact type so i’ll save him for her. pass.
14. Pascal Köpke
Tumblr media
the lad is TRYING! being the son of the NT goalkeeper coach is never easy. its hard to just be thrown on the pitch for the first time and be expected to create magic. hope he just gets better! solid pass bc his face looks like a prof of mine...yikes
19. Vedad Ibisevic
Tumblr media
*gently strokes picture* i didn’t know how good i had it. yes i get annoyed at his aggressive testosterone-yness but lordy does he love hertha and is a good captain. i miss seeing him on the pitch and scoring those goals, saving our asses. props, old man <3 definite pass though.
27. Davie Selke
Tumblr media
what CURSE has davie fallen victim to??? this man has no aim anymore and i miss his speedy legs and fancy goals !!!! absolute passion to sometimes ridiculous levels on the pitch but i love his heart. off the pitch, most down to earth nice sympatisch guy ever...hard smash
28. Dodi Lukébakio
Tumblr media
oof...OOOF. i really really REALLY like him. he shuffles cards well, his voice is so soothing, his smile is INCREDIBLE. and yeah...incredible goal scored and weaver around defenders. and so chill !!!! i hope he stays with us for a long time. smash. marry.
BONUS
(on loan at norwich) Ondrej Duda
Tumblr media
my heart grew three sizes when i saw this picture and now my eyes are all misty... he and sala have made my days so good when they were otherwise bad. his goalscoring last season incredible. he barely played this season at all. i don’t understand it. i hope and pray he comes back for us. duda...i love you (pass tho for the same reason as sala...)

DAVIE HAY was in the vanguard as Celtic attempted to halt the 10-in-a-row attempt from Walter Smith’s outfit from across the city.
It was imperative the Hoops imposed themselves again as the best team in the country – and they turned their attention to a Dutchman in their hour of need.
It was a massive challenge for Wim Jansen as he set about putting together a jigsaw of tried and trusted players with an influx of new signings.
Here, in another CQN EXCLUSIVE extract from Davie Hay’s outspoken autobiography, ‘The Quiet Assassin’, co-authored by Alex Gordon, the Celtic legend takes us behind the scenes of a momentous season.
WIM JANSEN had joined the club in July 1997 and Murdo MacLeod, who had been dismissed as manager of Partick Thistle the previous season, came in shortly afterwards as his assistant.
It was around this time that I realised Wim could be good for the club. He was a bit of an unknown and his job prior to joining Celtic was in Japan with Hiroshima. The fans waited to see how the club would react to being turned upside down. Wim and I were busy in the summer as the team went through a massive shake-up. July was a bit hectic on the transfer front.
Striker Darren Jackson arrived from Hibs for £1.5million, Scottish international midfielder Craig Burley cost £2.5million from Chelsea, French left-back Stephane Mahe joined from Rennes for £500,000 and goalkeeper Jonathan Gould was a £200,000 snip from Bradford City. Henrik Larsson, of course, was already in place.
All eyes were on the kick-off against Hibs at Easter Road on 3 August 1997 for the opening day of the league season and, hopefully, the beginning of a glorious new era for the club. Wim sent out this team: Gordon Marshall; Tommy Boyd, Malky Mackay, Alan Stubbs and Tosh McKinlay; Jackie McNamara, Simon Donnelly, Craig Burley and Andreas Thom; Darren Jackson and Tommy Johnson. Henrik Larsson was on the substitutes’ bench, but he would play a major role in the outcome of the game.
It was deadlocked at 1-1 when Wim introduced Henrik to the expectant Celtic fans. The Swede set up the winner with an inch-perfect pass, but, alas, the ball went straight to my former St.Mirren player Chic Charnley. Everyone knew Chic had a sweet left foot and he didn’t hesitate to use it as he ran onto the loose ball and first-timed a ferocious 20-yarder low past Marshall. That was the winning goal. It wasn’t quite the start we were looking for from Henrik or from Celtic, for that matter.
How would Wim react? He immediately displayed a ruthless streak and axed keeper Marshall and he never played again for the club. Jonathan Gould got the nod and he made his debut in front of over 45,000 fans at Celtic Park the following week. Wim showed great reassurance in Henrik and played him in the No.7 shirt that afternoon. Unfortunately, the result was identical to the previous week with the Fifers going home with the points.
IT TAKES TWO…manager Wim Jansen and club owner Fergus McCann on the day of the Dutchman’s arrival.
A rather unkind headline emerged in a newspaper that had a former player stating Wim had been the worst thing to hit Hiroshima since the Atomic Bomb. No-one was laughing, especially our manager who would not be sidetracked from the task at hand. His determination was more than commendable. You only get one chance to make a first impression and two successive defeats didn’t please the Celtic support.
Thankfully, there were signs of things to come the following week when Henrik scored his first goal for the club in a 2-0 victory over St.Johnstone in Perth. As usual, the Swede did things in style with a flying header that almost ripped a hole in the net. Darren Jackson got his first goal, too, and we were on the board. The signings continued with Danish international centre-back Marc Rieper arriving in a £1.8million deal from West Ham in September. He made his debut only days afterwards in a close-fought 3-2 triumph over Motherwell at Fir Park where Craig Burley claimed two, his first league goals for the club.
It was early days, but it looked as though Wim’s jigsaw puzzle was coming together. He was still looking for a bit of extra quality in the middle of the park and that was provided by Paul Lambert when he joined for £1.75million from Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund in November. He had helped the Germans win the Champions League the previous season, beating Juventus 3-1, and he was a first class acquisition. Again, like Mo Johnston all those years before him, he didn’t take a lot of persuading to put pen to paper.
Following the home defeat from Dunfermline in the second game of the campaign, Celtic had racked up eight successive victories. That came to a halt at Ibrox on on 8 November when Paul Lambert made his Celtic debut as a substitute. The team played well, but couldn’t convert their chances and were undone by a Richard Gough goal. A crowd of 47,464 turned out for the following game at Parkhead against Motherwell and were as baffled as anyone as the Fir Park side emerged with a 2-0 victory. That wasn’t in the script. Four days later 49,427 were in attendance in the east end of Glasgow to see a late header from Alan Stubbs give Celtic a 1-1 draw with Rangers. That was to turn out to be an extremely vital point at the end of the day.
Three games and no wins. Were the cracks beginning to show? How would Wim cope with the strain? I used to have a cup of tea with Wim in his office most mornings and I have to say I was hugely impressed by his single-minded attitude. He was utterly convinced that things would come together. We had to keep our focus. The fans were certainly showing their support for the Dutchman. Next up at Parkhead were Dundee United and 48,200 rolled in for the third consecutive home game. A total of 145,091 had turned out over that period. The supporters were backing the revolution. Henrik hit two against the Tannadice men to take his league tally to double figures. He was emerging as a formidable frontman with the happy knack of putting the ball in the opposition’s net.
That was down to a change in his role by Wim. He could see he would be more effective inside and his days of playing on the wing were over.
That was demonstrated once again the following Sunday, 30 November, when the Swede was on target again as Celtic lifted the League Cip – then under the guise of Coca-Cola Cup – by defeating Dundee United for the second successive game. This time it was 3-0 at Ibrox and Marc Rieper and Craig Burley were the other goalscorers while a crowd of 49,035 watched the enthralling action. It was the first time the club had won this trophy in fifteen long years.
READ ALL ABOUT IT…Davie Hay and his co-author Alex Gordon.
It was a bit of a breakthrough for Wim because, after only three months in charge, he had given the supporters some tangible success. He put out this team: Jonathan Gould; Tommy Boyd, Marc Rieper, Alan Stubbs and Stephane Mahe; Jackie McNamara, Craig Burley, Morten Wieghorst and Regi Blinker; Andreas Thom and Henrik Larsson. Enrico Annoni, bought from Roma by Tommy Burns the previous season, Simon Donnelly and Paul Lambert came on as second-half substitutes with McNamara, Thom and Blinker making way. Wim was doing his best to keep everyone involved. Exciting – and dramatic – months were ahead. They were certainly dramatic for me!
Around this time I was told of a Norwegian striker who was making a bit of a name for himself, Harald Brattbakk. He played for Rosenborg and I decided to have a look at him. I had seen footage of him playing against Real Madrid in a Champions League match and I was impressed. However, it is always good to check out the players in the flesh. Agents were unlikely to provide you with a video of their clients skying the ball over the bar from two yards, were they? All the good bits were on tape and the rest were left on the cutting room floor.
So, off I went to see Harald in action for myself. I detected he liked to come in from the left and hit right foot shots at goal. He got a lot of goals in this manner and I reckoned he could provide an x-factor at Celtic. He was something different, not a big hitman who would put himself about. He was actually quite slight and, off the pitch, wearing his spectacles, he looked like an accountant. I decided he was worth a chance and the club prepared to shell out £2million for him to become the eighth player signed by the club that season. Ironically, I lost my job a week or so before the signing was complete.
The fans continued to follow in their thousands and Brattbakk admitted he ‘was blown away’ by the atmosphere when he made his first appearance as a substitute in front of 49,806 fans in the 1-0 win over Hearts on 13 December. Craig Burley, beginning to strike a nice partnership with Paul Lambert in the middle of the park, was the goalscorer.
The fact that Burley and Lambert were beginning to be a perfect foil for each other was emphasised three games later when they both scored the important goals that saw Rangers defeated 2-0 at Parkhead, the first time we had won the New Year fixture in ten years.
Craig got the opener with a neat angled shot low past the stranded Andy Goram and Lambert’s second effort was Goal of the Century material. Goram pulled off a magnificent save from a rasping Darren Jackson drive, but the ball was worked back to the inrushing Lambert who connected perfectly from about twenty-five yards and his unstoppable first-timer raged high into the net.
There was now a genuine belief about the place that Celtic could win their first league title in a decade. What a difference to the glum, dismal outlook at the start of the campaign when the first two games were lost to Hibs and Dunfermline.
It was just a pity I would not be around at the end to participate in the championship celebrations.

David in BOA #2 Mar 2019
What do you lose if you win everything? David Alaba and Jérôme talk about victories and defeats - on and off the pitch
The Munich Glockenbachviertel on a mild February afternoon. David Alaba appears with mirrored sunglasses in the photo studio, where the shoot for this issue is to take place. Jérôme is already there, receiving his teammate in the dressing room. A handshake, a smile, then the funk starts. Jérôme says to the make-up artist: "Please put a lot of make-up on David's skin." David soon gets his revenge in the photo studio as he grunts at Boateng with a grin. The native Viennese and the native Berliner do not need a long warm-up to get in the mood. It's Travis Scott. Between the recordings David Alaba dances in the studio, Jérôme raps.
Both of them actually came here to talk to us about a big topic of life: about victories and defeats, sporty and personal. As defenders, they are at least sporty, so our guess. On the plus side: Both won together with the team of FC Bayern six German championships, three DFB Cups and a Champions League trophy. But they also know what it means to lose. The tragic »Finale dahoam« 2012. The repeated defeats in the European Champions League against Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. And if the individual form did not fit, the critics did not deal with the two tenderly. As a professional footballer they learned early that even fame and recognition can be lost quickly. As people, they learned how difficult it is to make friends and meet women when you can not even walk on a street unrecognized. So what do you lose when you have won almost everything? We have a few questions. Here we go.
David and Jérôme, is winning an addiction?
D Maybe already, but a positive addiction. J To win a big title in a big stadium is like a rush, an absolute feeling of happiness. And if I'm not allowed to play, for example because I'm hurt, I can not wait to get back on the pitch. It tingles in me. I do not know many addictions, but maybe the term is actually quite good. You give your all to get back in the field as fast as possible, to play, and yes, to win. It was a dream as a child.
What's better: playing in front of 70 000 spectators in the stadium or sex?
J Depends on how sex is. But if you ask me for the best feeling I can remember, the answer is not difficult. That was the moment when we became world champions in Rio de Janeiro. Even in Brazil, where football is almost a religion. I still can not believe it.
David, was triple-year 2013 the biggest in your career for you? D Yes, clearly, that was enormous. When I think about how much power that cost back then, how many victims we had to bring, physically and mentally, to collect the harvest in the end, to become German Champion, Champions League winner and cup winner. But equally emotionally were my two debuts at Bayern and in the Austrian national team. These were events that I did not dare to  even dream about as a little boy in Vienna. I also think there are many different highlights in a career, sometimes they can be very small, but they are meaningful to you personally. J That's right. For example, if you can save the ball on the goal line in a game and know that this really helps the team in the situation, because this again forces are released. As at the EM 2016.
Is a big stadium necessary for great feelings of victory, or is this also possible on a football pitch? D victories in front of great audience, of course in the home stadium in particular, but also in the legendary arenas such as Madrid, London or Dortmund are always something incredible that I can hardly get used to. The feeling of victory on the football field can also be moving. I still remember how I kicked in the small squares of Vienna as a teenager. Since I never thought that it is about nothing. On the contrary, buffets are about something that most even consider most sacred - honor. J I can only confirm that. Emotions take place in the huge stadium as well as on a small playing field. If I bet with my friends on the pitch, who wins, it can get down to business.
When were you last on a football field?
J I gambled with mates in my garden in Munich in September. We played three against three. Although I watch a bit in a duel, you do not want to hurt yourself - but I have to win already! D He then chooses the teams so that he does not have to do much, but still wins.
How long does the feeling of happiness last after winning a trophy? D Our profession is fast-paced. When the new season comes, the last title is immediately forgotten. In addition, you should not lose as a Bayern player actually. Otherwise, the pressure will quickly increase and everything in the media will be called into question. This has been seen again in the first round. J One must also remember that one was hardly used to defeats at Bayern. This is not supposed to sound overbearing, but controlling the League as much as our team for several seasons changes the mindset of all players and maybe even the people around it. Victories are the norm. If, as in this first round, we suddenly do not win in almost every Bundesliga game but lose ourselves at home, it is suddenly a new feeling that we all have to deal with. That also unsettled us as a team. It is all the better if you can fight back, as at the beginning of the second half, when we approached Dortmund. That gave a boost.
Do defeats have a longer after-effect than victories? J In any case. I can not lose, I've never been able to, not even in my youth. If I lose, my mood is often legendary lousy for days. It can happen that I can not speak for anyone, listen to music, nothing else. Only my two daughters can get me out of this condition, for example if they want to get on my arm. Then I feel better.
Do not you also console all the titles you already have? D Unfortunately not. What lies behind us does not matter anymore. If Jérôme and I slip through in the defense, it does not help much that we both won the triple years ago. But that's also the cool thing about sports. With every kick-off, it starts again.
David, how do you deal with setbacks? D defeats affect me very differently, depending on how the game was. If you lose in the first round against Borussia Mönchengladbach, that's not nice. Worse, the defeat last season felt in the semifinals in the Champions League. That's where we went against Real Madrid, even though we were the better team. This is especially bitter. You work towards the goal of winning the Champions League for so long - and suddenly it's all over, even though you were better.
These weeks will decide if you will end this season as a felt winner or loser. Does it also depend on you feeling like a winner or loser for one summer? D At least I can say that if you win the Champions League then you're in a different mood for a summer. In the summer of 2013, I definitely shot down a few rockets! J Yes, but if I fly out of such an important competition unhappily, I need my peace first. Then I can not go on holiday with friends and celebrate parties, but stay with the family, which brings me to other thoughts. Everyone has their own methods to deal with disappointments. I am a believer, draw my strength from it. I pray and read in the Bible. I do that in front of almost every game in the hotel room and afterwards when I get home.
Do you always want to win when playing Monopoly, Cards or PlayStation? J As I said: I can not lose, no matter where. I get extremely angry then. Especially if I feel that I have been treated unfairly. D I'm fine too. If I lose, everything is unfair. But you have to explain that we both play rather little. In the team, others are the gamer.
Do you have the feeling that you are winning or losing on important match days in the morning?
J Yes, I have. And mostly the feeling comes true.
D I have it too, but if I have a bad feeling in the morning, I try to deal with it, leave the negative thoughts aside, and concentrate on more positive things. This sometimes works.
Is it true that the coaching in the half-time break can decide on victory or defeat? J The speeches are very important. The team listens closely to how the coach talks about individual players. That makes a huge difference. When the coach proves to be sensitive and sets the right tone, we attack players in a different way.
Which coaches have reached you the best? D Hard to say, everyone has their own style.
J For me, Jupp Heynckes and Pep Guardiola were the best coaches. Tactically, Pep was the best I met. He just saw almost everything in the square. Jupp and Pep have personally motivated me most in the cabin.
Who did not do that well? D I want to clean up with a common misconception. If it does not work, it is often said that the coach does not reach the team anymore. That's true in the rarest cases. Most of the time it's up to something else. J I have seldom experienced that. If anything, there was a language barrier. That was the case with Carlo Ancelotti, who spoke a lot of Italian. Since we could not communicate so well. In addition came the getting used of Peps football to Carlos football. These were two different ways of looking at the way you play football. The transition was very complex.
When do you get more WhatsApp messages from friends and acquaintances: when you won or when you lost? D I get more news on wins. J In my case, that keeps the balance. More importantly, the bigger the game, the more messages I have on my phone. If we've lost, there are actually only two varieties: either "head up, well played" or "Can I be in the next game?"
Many well-known people report that success and fame also lead to a very different profit, namely to a significant increase in new friends, acquaintances and those who would like it. Can you confirm that? D Yes, there is something in it. There are so-called friends who are only there for you if you give them the crème de la crème of one. And there are the real friends who always there for you. So I had to learn to deal with it. I had to build up human knowledge. And I also had to part with one or the other. J I imagine that I am careful enough and only slowly open myself to new people. That's my protection.
Do you sometimes notice how other professionals are flocking gold diggers, ie people who only or mainly want to gain the assets of the players? J I can see that already. At Bayern or at the national team I know no player who surrounds himself with these gold diggers. But abroad I see in some restaurants, colleagues, where I creeps this dull feeling that it is not everyone honestly means. What sometimes sit there for funny people at the tables!
David, how do you protect yourself from false friends? D I'm always traveling with the same people With the Kobli (Philipp Koblischek, editor's note) I played together in Austria at Austria Wien. We have known each other since we were ten. Two or three years ago he moved from Vienna to Munich. That makes me very happy.
How many best friends do you have? D For me it's the Kobli! J I have only one best friend, Alex. I've known him since I was six. Our friendship deepened over the years. Alex lives in Berlin. He also has a family, two children, a job. We call every day. We exchange ideas, we really talk about each other. He knows me inside out. He just remembers me writing him on Whatsapp, whether I'm good or bad. With the latter, he also knows that he should rather not call now.
Back to our magazine motto "Win & Lose": Which sacrifice you had to make for your professional career was the hardest for you? J First, there were the typical victims as a teenager. When my friends went to the disco, I usually went to bed early. As a professional footballer we have to give up a part of our private life. I can not go to the swimming pool or the cinema with my children without being disturbed or without my children noticing that they are being watched. D That's why I've got more mixed feelings of fame now than I used to, when I was happy to see myself in the paper. I remember how much I, as a child, dreamed of having my own poster in Bravo Sport. That has completely settled.
You can also win and lose in love. Do you have any tips on how to conquer the hearts of women? J I can not say I have a specific method that always works. Women have different tastes. Some like a cool look, others humor or clever, profound conversations. I always try to show good manners, to behave like a gentleman, to hold the door. D I also do not know if it's just about impressing someone. It is more important to me to find a woman who does not want to get to know the professional footballer David Alaba, but the person David. I still remember my first relationship, my childhood sweetheart. Since I had no problem at all to build trust. I did not have a known name back then. In my second relationship, I needed much longer for that. And today it takes even longer before I can totally open myself.
J I'm fine too. In the meantime, I prefer it best if the woman does not understand football at all, does not even know who I am. But that is mostly the case abroad and not everywhere anymore.
Is that why you travel to the US so often because footballers are more likely to be left alone? J Both of us are mainly going to America because of the lifestyle: we like the people, the sports, the fashion and the music. And I personally like that so many nationalities come together in cities like New York and Los Angeles. D We do not go to America to meet ladies! (:D)
One day, the question will ask you how you want to end your careers. And with it, how you will cope with the loss of your favorite occupation. Some ex-professionals have lost their sense of life in these turmoil, others lost their wealth. How do you deal with it? D Sorry, but I do not think about such things. Even though I've heard that one should plan the life after the football out and provide accordingly, I must say: I think only from week to week. J Maybe you notice the four-year age difference that separates David and me. Because I have to say that I know only one fear: the end of my career. I am seriously concerned with the question of what will happen if one day I can no longer play football. Football is my life. I can not imagine this feeling that I will have after my retirement. I'm afraid of that. I know that one day I will have to retire. But on the other hand, it does not want to go right into my head.
People who had to rebuild their lives, it should have helped to look forward to something that they had to give up a long time. What would you think? J I would take a long trip around the world after the end of my career, look at everything, start in Australia, I always wanted to go there. That would be the first. You can still do a coaching certificate later. D Maybe you can train me then yes. Because then I will definitely still play. But seriously: I do not look that far ahead. I hope that I can live my dream for a few more years.

In this special BVB ambience, Philipp enjoys the appetizers, which are served to him from two german "Currywurst" strongholds and then talks even more warmly about his love to Berlin, his family or his once close connection to Hertha, that was destroyed in one go when the little Maximilian had to leave his favourite club at the age of 14. That this shy highschool student from Lankwitz, a district of Steglitz, was quite talented, could also have attracted attention of his youth coach at that time. But he preferred tall, strong athletes and one day told the later U21-European champion that he would no longer need him.
A hard blow for the sensitive Philipp. „A world collapsed in me that day," says the Dortmund Bundesliga professional when looking back on a black day for him, after which he first "didn't know what to do". After all, it was his childhood dream to become a Bundesliga professional with Hertha. In his home club, where he was also a loyal ball boy in the Olympic stadium. But now, after eight beautiful years in the blue and white Hertha jerseys, he had to look for a new club that could awaken the joy of football in him again. Philipp found it again at the traditional club Tennis Borussia, which even played in the Bundesliga for two seasons in the seventies. On his way there, he was accompanied by his best friend Christopher Lenz, who is now a licensed player at Union Berlin. "He's like a brother," says Philipp about his same-aged colleague, who also left Hertha out of "solidarity with me because he didn't think it was okay how I was treated."
At Tennis Borussia, Philipps desire for football returned with the support of his friend. And so the growing junior player scored many goals for the "Violets" between 2008 and 2011, two of them in a 3-0 victory over Hertha, when Hermann Gerland, a coaching-institution at FC Bayern Munich, observed him from the stands. Gerland helped Philipp to a trial training with the German record champion. There the Berlin-player injured himself to his regret, but finds when looking back "that it would not have been right to go to the Bavarians at that time". Instead, he moved to the Under19 of Energie Cottbus for a year in 2011, before getting to know the many advantages of the Freiburg football school a year later and gradually moving up to the Bundesliga team of the sportsclub under Christian Streich. Philipp is still grateful to the coach "that he is not only interested in the footballer, but also in the human. I could talk with Mr. Streich about everything".
For Maximilian Philipp, the fact that he scored his first of 27 Bundesliga goals against Hertha on 15th February 2015 in Berlins Olympic Stadium is "no coincidence. I call it destiny". [...] Philipp, who still hadn't digested the old separation story with Hertha, says about his premier goal: "That I score such a goal was also pushed by my perceptible anger on the day I had to leave Hertha. When the ball was in the goal, it was like a liberation for me. There was a load falling off me." [...]
The West Berliner Philipp, whose first name Maximilian was shortened to "Mili" from childhood on, loves his city not only because of football, of course. He says: "Here you can do whatever you want to do and look at so many sights that you never get bored". The professional soccer player, who grew up in Freiburg and Dortmund, also discovers the east of the city with all its beauties and peculiarities more and more. Most recently, he learned to appreciate the multicultural ambience of the "Mauerpark" between Wedding and Prenzlauer Berg.
For Philipp it is already clear that he will "definitely" return to Berlin "if I don't play football anymore". This may still take some time, as the fast offensive player is only 24 and still has many years to go in his beloved sport. Even if he doesn't have much time, he uses "every possibility to come home". Philipp owns an apartment in Charlottenburg where his mother Sylvia lives. When he is around, she cooks the beloved lasagna for her boy. Maximilian Philipp talks with a lot of empathy and sensitivity about the close relationship to his parents. He loved his father Marcus, who died in 2011 after a serious illness, just as much as he loved his mother over the years. Even now, Maximilian Philipp says, "not a day goes by that I don't think about him". His dad, a tiler and a talented kicker in his youth at Hertha, promoted the talent of his son together with his wife. "My parents," says Philipp, "have saved up to fulfil my wishes and support me. I find this unbelievable and anything but self-evident." Philipp dedicated one of his six tattoos to his deceased father. And for his mother he would get a seventh tattoo, "but she forbids it because she doesn't like tattoos".
Son "Mili", who has worked hard for his status as a professional, of course, respects this wish. He has his own life motto engraved on his skin. One the one hand it says "Lebe dein Leben" ("Live your life") and "Hope is not a dream, but a way of making dreams reality" on the other. Philipp has realized his hopes of becoming a professional one day. Moments that he experienced as a painful defeat, like his separation from Hertha, made this quiet Berliner with his pleasant manners even stronger.
There you go @madtimer. Shortened it a bit, but all in all this is Millis story in the current members magazine.
Hope everything is translated correctly, if not feel free to tell me :)

The Tale of Stephan Bleibtrau
Parts of this story might have been slightly embellished because while Football Manager is detailed, it’s not that detailed. Yet.
It’s March 2040. My Chemie Leipzig side are gunning for a fifth straight Bundesliga title, being run close by the noisy, energy-drink-fuelled neighbours from across the Elsterbecken. My hard graft, buy-low-sell-high attitude coupled with my innovative win at all costs tactics (nicknamed Lady Amalthea) had seen us overtake RasenballSport to become the dominant side in Leipzig. The first game back after the international break saw us hosting our local rivals from deep in the bowels of the former Zentralstadion. A win would pretty much guarantee the title, adding it to the Club World Championship won earlier in the season, and we could concentrate on the upcoming Champions League quarter final against Liverpool. Lose, and it could break our season. Draw, and we’d hold our lead, but I wanted the sticky, sickly, Taurine flavoured club to suffer.
It was at this point that I realised having two goalkeepers from the same FIFA region might not have been a smart decision.
I welcomed the majority of my international superstars back from their travels without incident. French winger Yaya Toure (not that one, obviously) had barely played and was whizzing round the training ground like an 8 year old after a bag of Haribo Tangfastics. Oyvind Skollerud, the Norwegian striker who had the all time Chemie record goalscorer, um, record in his sights, had scored twice in a 10 minute cameo off the bench and wanted to add more to his total. Marius Wirtz, my €78m defensive midfielder poached from Mönchengladbach and my missing puzzle piece, was telling everyone who would listen how he two-footed a crate of Red Bull drinks at his local supermarket the night before. My team, my wonderful boys, were up for the derby.
The outfield players were, anyway. I looked across to where Jan Zimmerman was warming up the keepers with the goalkeeping coaches, and instead of seeing Luis Garza and Luis Vela debating the merits of Stetsons versus Sombreros, all I saw was Jan kicking footballs at a spotty 17 year old who looked like he weighed all of 50 kilos soaking wet. I called him over.
“Jan, where are the Luises?”
“Uh, Ontario, the last I checked.”
“Oh, how lovely for them! Are they visiting Her Majesty, Carly Rae Jepsen? They do know we’ve got a game tomorrow, yes?”
“Flight’s delayed, boss. Snowing, innit. Due in Berlin tomorrow at 12:30.”
“But we kick off at 12:30. In the derby. They’ll still be showing as on international duty, we won’t be able to select them!”
“Well, boss, I’d like you to meet Stephan! As soon as I heard about the delay, I pulled him out of the Under 19 squad to train with us. He may have the agility of an angry dishwasher, and the communication skills of Marcel Marceau…”
I looked at Jan expectantly. He had a butface.
“But…?”
“But I also left a bottle of whiskey in your office, with another one packed for tomorrow at 2:15.”
I put a brave face on, though I’m fairly sure my smile didn’t meet my eyes, and turned to my saving grace.
“Always glad to make use of our excellent youth facilities, Stephan! Jan will warm you up and then we’ll take you through the defensive drills - should be familiar to you, we play it my way across all age groups and genders at this club.”
I threw him a freshly printed “Bleibtreu 30” shirt, and he caught it. At the third attempt. I glanced at Jan.
“It’s the strong whiskey, boss.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Matchday. After an unsuccessful night of begging, pleading, crying and cajoling Lufthansa to divert to Leipzig, or at the very least drop my two keepers off on the way - I offered to pay for parachutes, too! - I was resigned to starting with a goalkeeper who wasn’t even born when Marcus Rashford was elected the UK PM in 2023. Rather than flood the defence and midfield and protect Bleibtreu as much as possible, I stuck with my attack minded approach, reasoning that if the ball was up the other end I was less likely to suffer a coronary whenever Red Bull attacked.
This lasted all of seven minutes. In their first attack their left winger whipped a cross into the box. Bleibtreu watched, gormlessly, as it sailed over his head to the grateful Andy van Eck who slammed it home. As the five thousand away fans burst into a chant of “dodgy keeper” Bleibtreu looked around, desperately wanting the ground to swallow him whole. My opposite number goaded me from his technical area with a bizarre crotch-chop gesture. I heard a voice in my ear.
“My daughter’s standing next to his Mercedes with a rock, boss. Just say the word.” My coach, Pol Lirola, hissed in Spanish-accented German. “Just say. The. Word.”
Before I could respond to my right hand man press ganging his eight year old into acts of vandalism again, we kicked off. A fired up Skollerud exchanged passes with Ognjen Ilic, brushed off a half-hearted challenge from an RB CB and burst clear of their defence! With only the keeper to beat, he wound up, put his laces through the ball, and slammed it against the post.
Barely had the 46,000 strong Chemie faithful sucked in a breath for a disappointed “awww” before the ball rebounded back, into their goalkeeper’s skull, and into the net for an equaliser! The awwws turned to cheers and I had to restrain Lirola from getting another FA charge for “comparing an opposing manager’s mother to farmyard animals”.
Toure woke up and started to demonstrate every single point of his leadership rating. Dictating play, pinging cross field balls to stretch the RB side, pointing at things, he took the game by the scruff of the neck. Both sides settled into a pulsating rhythm, but neither managed to test the opposing keeper until 25 minutes in. One of my “elite” centre backs got his left and right mixed up and suddenly van Eck burst clear with only Bleibtreu to beat. Our fans were already preparing the “chin up Stephan” chants when he leapt, catlike, across the goal to turn van Eck’s shot around the post. From the resulting corner he made a superb double save, once with his hands and one with his face, to keep the scores level.
While this was going on, the RB left-back had been goading Toure with the usual attempts at gamesmanship - “Johnny Halliday is overrated! Amelie is dull! Victor Hugo’s work is padded out with pointless digressions!” - and Yaya had had enough. He picked up the game by the scruff of the neck. A mazy run through the home defence, twisting and turning and leaving his nemesis flat on his arse, ended with Toure slamming the ball past their still shell-shocked keeper. A two-one lead at the break, and I confiscated yet another flick-knife from Lirola as I bundled my backroom staff into the dressing room.
Ignoring Jan’s suggestions for a team talk I calmly reminded my boys of the perils of complacency and lavished praise on my defence. Bleibtreu seemed to grow three sizes with confidence, and I sent the team back out accompanied by the roar of the home fans in the Kai Druschky stadium. Toure picked up exactly where he left off, with a second goal two minutes into the half, and we were 3-1 up and purring. Jan suggested we see out the second half by shutting the game down, but I wanted more! I wanted to humiliate the jumped up village team from Markranstädt!
The dictionary defines hubris as “excessive pride or self-confidence, often leading to a downfall”. In persisting with my attack based strategy, holes appeared at the back and by ‘Eck, van Eck slammed home his and Red Bull’s second of the game with fifteen minutes to go. Our two goal lead had been reduced to one and I switched to the Schmendrick defensive tactic I kept in reserve for tight games. Off came Skollerud, on came the mercurial Italian centre back Bennati, and we bunkered down for a nervy fifteen minutes. Our only outlet for pressure relief was Toure, and he did his best to keep the ball up the other end, but after the RB LB was taken off with twisted blood, the fresh legs of his replacement easily outpaced our knackered Frenchman. Shot after shot piled in, pinging off the frame of the goal, being blocked by various body parts of various Chemie players, but as the 4th official held up his board we were still leading.
90+4. We’d had the allotted injury time, and amidst the deafening whistles from the fans imploring referee Wischer to blow up for full time, van Eck picked up the ball on the halfway line. Easily evading the despairing lunges of my worn out defenders, he slalomed his way towards my nervous puppy in goal. Two of his team-mates had made similar runs into space, keeping up with him, but he only had an eye for goal and the match ball. As he entered our area Bleibtrau summoned all 9 points of his rushing out rating and came out to meet the Dutchman. van Eck steadied himself, picked his spot, and placed his shot carefully against Bleibtrau’s big toe. The ball ballooned harmlessly into the home fans where it promptly disappeared, suddenly reappearing seconds later after Wischer blew for full time.
In the full time huddle I had nothing but praise for my last minute stand-in. Making his debut in a 1st vs 2nd clash, against our local rivals no less, I couldn’t hold back.
“Nice work, Stephan! Am I proud of you! When you go home tonight, there’s going to be another storey on your house!”
He looked at me blankly. Jan whispered in my ear.
“Boss, I keep telling you, nobody understands your classical literary references.”
I came up with a more understandable reward. The very next day Stephan Bleibtrau signed a five year contract, no negotiation on the wages and bonuses he requested, and as long as he wants to stay here there will always be a place for him at Chemie. If he leaves I’ll retire the number 30 shirt in his honour. I can’t see him playing another first team game for the club, outside of dead rubber CL group stages, but it won’t matter. He saved my bacon in that derby game, and I’m forever in his debt.
Unless he starts agitating for a move to Lokomotiv Leipzig. Then the little sod’s banished to the reserves until the end of time.

Bayern Munich and Germany's number one Manuel Neuer reveals his "no fear" approach to goalkeeping
In a new book, the Bayern Munich and Germany 'keeper reveals what made him the world's number one.
"In life, I’m a guy who likes to drive a car quite fast, but I wear a seat belt at the same time." It is a definition of the approach of a modern goalkeeper to the game that comes from football's greatest exponent of the art, Manuel Neuer.
The sight of the Bayern Munich and Germany number one racing out of his penalty area to intercept an opponent's menacing through ball — quite literally cutting them off at the pass — has become as commonplace as seeing him produce world-class saves.
The vanguard of the 'sweeper 'keeper' style, Neuer has, naturally, been caught out on occasion, but in a new book by Sports Illustrated contributor Grant Wahl, admitted the idea he might commit a mistake does not cross his mind with the ball down on him and a forward at full pace not far behind.
“I don’t feel the fear in my head at that moment. I always think positively. It’s all about the first step. If I think I will get the ball, I go out. I can’t stop halfway because the goal is empty and the player would have the opportunity to shoot. You make the reaction, and then, of course, you have to be sure to get the ball.
"But it’s years of practice. You can’t say from one day to the other: ‘Now I will do it,’ you know? You have to feel it," he explained in Wahl's new book Football 2.0: How the World’s Best Play the Modern Game
“It’s up to me to help my defenders and it’s better for me to get the ball before the striker than to [wait and] have a one-on-one situation in the box. That’s more dangerous than to go out, because the striker has a chance to score a goal. If he can’t get the ball, he won’t have any opportunity.”
He added: “I take risks a bit, but I stand for security and protection, and you have to give your team-mates that feeling as well."
Makeover
While he sometimes needs not only a seat belt but also the airbag of back-up from his defenders, Neuer has given the impression of being all but unpassable since coming through the ranks at Schalke.
But his 2011 move to Bayern was the first step to him not only innovating his own natural playing style, but also giving goalkeeping a face-changing makeover, taking the position to new heights.
That was in large part down to the thinking of former Bayern boss Pep Guardiola, who sees his goalkeeper not as the last line of defence, but the starting point of the attack.
“To be a modern goalkeeper, I have to think offensively, to initiate our attacking moves safely and securely,” says Neuer, who is racing to be fit for Germany's World Cup defence in Russia next month. “Both my teams, Bayern and Germany, usually have more than 60% possession. So I have to be outside the box and be involved in the passing game from the back to get the ball to the first, second and third row of players. All these things are incorporated in my game, but I can afford it because I’m in these strong teams.”
With the use of his feet just as important as the work he does with his hands, Neuer works hard in training with Bayern goalkeeping coach, Toni Tapalovic, on all aspects of his game.
The pair have worked in tandem since Neuer was an up-and-coming 'keeper at Schalke and Tapalovic was the Gelsenkirchen club's number two. As Neuer's career took off, Tapalovic's peetered out through injury, but he has been key to his former protege's development into the planet's number one number one.
"I recommended him to Bayern. I think he has brought me to my best level," Neuer said, admitting he and Tapalovic have had to focus on improving his diving to his right, something the Bayern custodian revealed does not feel as natural as moving to the other side.
"It's the same power, but it looks different because the body changes when you are up in the air. When you are lying down on the grass and need to stand up, you stand up in a different way on each side. It’s not symmetrical. The important thing is that you can jump high and long and stand up quickly. It doesn’t have to look perfect, but it has to be quick."
Model pupil
Unfortunately for opposing forwards, they cannot tell Neuer's left from his right as he infuriatingly manages to combine both artistry and efficiency. Bayern have been able to boast the best defensive record in the Bundesliga every season since he arrived in Bayern — albeit with back-up Sven Ulreich playing for most of the 2017/18 campaign — with Neuer becoming the new benchmark for aspiring 'keepers to match and, potentially, surpass, just as he has done.
“In Germany, Jens Lehmann was a model style for a German goalkeeper. In the international style, my idol was [the Netherlands’] Edwin van der Sar. He was so modern, much more modern than Lehmann. He had another level. He could play with his left and right foot and go out of the box and go out to get crosses. He was present as a personality.
"Then there was Oliver Kahn: his reflexes, his ambition. He trained hard, and in that sense he was my idol. So I have some different pieces put together. It’s like having a lot of coaches, and you save something from the coach that you think is good for you – and that becomes you," said Neuer, who admitted there remains one opponent he still struggles to keep at bay as he waits to suddenly be called into thrilling, game-changing action.
“Sometimes in the winter it’s very cold, you know, especially in Bavaria. It’s not easy at that moment, because you have to go from 0 to 100.”

UEFA Champions League Power Rankings: Liverpool, PSG on the up as Chelsea slide down after loss to Juventus
Tumblr media
It has been a dramatic week in the Champions League and beyond with shock results and clashes between some of the continent's biggest teams. Now with a second of the group stage games in the can we are now at the stage where we can start to make a realistic assessment of who is likely to be in the business end of the competition.  As such, don't consider these power rankings to be necessarily indicative of the best teams in Europe but instead of those most likely to reach the business end of the Champions League. In other words, sorry AC Milan. Here's how the teams are shaping up ahead of the international break:
The top tier: Title or bust
These teams should be disappointed with anything less than a semi final berth and frankly even that might not be enough, such is their talent profile. 1. Manchester City (--) Their brutal week of away games against Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool may have yielded only four points and yet their status as Europe's top team has probably been enhanced. In each match there were spells where their opponents simply could not live with Pep Guardiola's side even if the familiar issues of chance conversion raised their ugly head. Still across those three matches City created shots worth 5.49 expected goals (xG) and allowed three star-studded attacks just 1.76 xG. That bodes well for the business end of the season. 2. Liverpool (+1) Mohamed Salah might be Europe's form forward right now with Sadio Mane not far behind him. Both look back to their best with a stable foundation behind them. If there is a scintilla of doubt over Jurgen Klopp's side at the moment it is that they can be guilty of letting teams back into games they seem to be dominating; even though City upped their game dramatically on Sunday at Anfield the first 15 minutes felt rather similar to games against AC Milan and Brentford where Liverpool let a moment slip by. 3. Bayern Munich (+1) A 2-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt spoiled their impressive start to the season but the sort of robust treatment the visitors meted out on Bayern probably is not a practical response to dealing with this all conquering attack. On Sunday a combination of loose final passes and excellent goalkeeping from Kevin Trapp denied them but the eight goals of evidence they have from the Champions League suggests those sorts of days will be few and far between.
Serious contenders: If things go right, why not us?
It certainly is not beyond the realm of imagination that any of these teams could be lifting the European Cup in Istanbul come May, though it may require a few fortunate breaks for the tournament to go their way. 4. Paris Saint-Germain (+1) PSG's simultaneously underwhelming and impressive season continued in that fashion last week as moments of magic from Lionel Messi and Idrissa Gueye took them to a win over a Manchester City side to whom they gave plenty of routes back into the match. Then they failed to muster a single shot on target in the second half of a 2-0 loss to Rennes. Their defense looks like it needs a lot more time to coalesce whilst we are still yet to see all the big three click at the same time. Craving even more coverage of the world's game? Listen below and follow ¡Qué Golazo! A Daily CBS Soccer Podcast where we take you beyond the pitch and around the globe for commentary, previews, recaps and more. 5. Chelsea (-3) While a 3-1 win over Southampton eased any murmurs of disaffection there are still real causes for concern at Chelsea, who struggled to create any meaningful chances when all square with Manchester City and Juventus. Their defense is giving up good chances far more frequently than it did last season and that has so far not been balanced out by greater attacking impetus at the other end.
Dark horses: Unlikely contenders, but contenders all the same
These teams are unlikely champions, but then so were Chelsea this time a year ago. It may take a change of circumstances like the Blues had when they appointed Thomas Tuchel, perhaps a new signing or the unearthing of a new tactical plan. It's possible, but certainly not probable. 6. Borussia Dortmund (-2) A slightly clunky 1-0 win over Sporting and a 2-1 victory against Augsburg might not normally be such cause for optimism at Dortmund but the fact that they were earned without Erling Haaland (and in the former case Julian Brandt) is encouraging for Marco Rose. There are few downsides to having one of the best young strikers in the world but Dortmund had on occasion been looking a little too reliant on Haaland, not least because his understudy Donyell Malen had started slowly in the Bundesliga. A goal in the Champions League offers hope that that might be about to change. 7. Ajax (+2) No team has a higher xG through two group stage games than Ajax, who pummeled both Sporting and Besiktas into submission. Erik ten Hag's side seems to have options all over the pitch in what looks to be a relatively orthodox 4-3-3 executed to aplomb with players who might not be the most heralded of stars but click excellently together. In particular Steven Berghuis' late runs from midfield could well pose a problem deep into this tournament. 8. Sevilla (-1) It has been a rather underwhelming week for Julen Lopetegui's side but crucially they came back from Wolfsburg with a point after Ivan Rakitic's late goal. Their 1-0 defeat against Granada was something of a forgivable result, they only allowed three shots for their opponents though they themselves went nearly an hour between shots that drew a save from Luis Maximiano. 9. Real Madrid (-3) A horrendous week for Carlo Ancelotti saw his side follow one of the greatest upsets in Champions League group stage history -- their 2-1 defeat at home to Sheriff -- with a loss by the same scoreline against Espanyol. On both occasions they created the chances to win the game but they are perhaps overly reliant on the scoring form of Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior, who account for over half of Madrid's shots on target in the Champions League and La Liga. 10. Atletico Madrid (+1) Though wins over AC Milan and Barcelona have them sitting pretty in both major competitions it is worth reflecting on how much of the first of those games passed by before Atleti really looked like exploiting their man advantage following Franck Kessie's red card. In Europe in particular it feels like Diego Simeone's side need an awful lot of time, fortune and high grade attacking talent on the pitch just to test their opponents. 11. Manchester United (-1) Though Cristiano Ronaldo's late goal against Villarreal kept them firmly in the mix in Group F each successive game seems to be proving the limitations of United's hero ball approach. Against Everton they looked devoid of ideas to carve open two banks of four and for a team whose best attacking moments seem to come on the counter they have precious little idea how to stop other teams doing it to them. If they do not develop a plan soon Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might be out of a job and there are no guarantees the team will get out of their group.
Knockout stage contenders
You will note here that there are slightly more contenders for the knockout stages than there will be teams in there. Welcome to the wonder of those teams battling for second spot in the groups. There will always be someone disappointed. 12. Juventus (+1) 13. Inter Milan (-1) One might make a convincing case that Inter, still unbeaten in Serie A and averaging three goals per game, are the better of the two Italian sides in 12th and 13th but after picking up just a point from their first two group fixtures they are firmly behind the eight ball in the Champions League and can ill afford further slip ups against Sheriff in the coming matches. Meanwhile Juventus' resilient victory over Chelsea was perhaps not the sort they could repeat on a regular basis. But then they won't need to for a while yet with favorable meetings with Zenit Saint Petersburg and Malmo to come. It probably will not be long until Massimiliano Allegri's side reach the last 16. 14. Benfica (+3) 15. Red Bull Salzburg (+4) 16. Atalanta (-1) 17. Wolfsburg (-3) 18. Villarreal (--) 19. Sheriff Tiraspol (+7) Their 2-1 win over Real Madrid was hardly vintage football from Sheriff, who gave up all the chances their opponents needed and more after their opening goal in the Santiago Bernabeu, but there were moments that showed why the Moldovan champions have proven to be such a tough out for seasoned European sides. In the 24 minutes before their opener Yuriy Vernydub's side kept the 13-time European champions to four shots worth a combined 0.24 xG. This is a defense that can hold out the best of them, though perhaps not under the pressure that Madrid put on them. 20. Barcelona (-4)
In the mix
A few fortunate breaks and they may find themselves extending their Champions League involvement beyond Christmas. Don't bet on it though. 21. Porto (+1) 22. Club Brugge (+9) 23. Shakhtar Donetsk (+4) 24. Dynamo Kyiv (+1) 25. Zenit Saint Petersburg (+4) 26. RB Leipzig (-7) Jesse Marsch's task of pipping one of Manchester City and PSG to the post in Group A seemed herculean from the outset. It might just be beyond them after their loss to Club Brugge. Their league form is beginning to turn a corner but one cannot help but feel that their best prospect now is to play catch up with the Belgians and hope they can steal in to earn a Europa League spot. Considering they would then rank among the favorites for that competition it may not be the worst of consolations. 27. Young Boys (+3) 28. AC Milan (-7) 29. Sporting (-3) 30. Besiktas (-3) When the draw was made Group C seemed to offer the most intrigue with no obvious front runner. Everyone seemed to be in the mix for qualifying but now it would appear that Ajax and Borussia Dortmund are streaking ahead. For Sporting or Besiktas to have any real chance of reaching the top two they will have to take four points from their back to back fixtures over the coming weeks.
Slipping out of Europe
There are no bad teams in the Champions League but these will do well to extend their involvement in European football beyond Christmas. 31. Lille (-3) 32. Malmo (--) Source link Read the full article

Under Thomas Tuchel, why could Chelsea dominate the Premier League for the next five years
As the worldwide break initiates, how about we take our creative mind on a ride. Where will Chelsea be in the following five years with precisely the same crew? Imagine a scenario where I was to let you know that in five years, Timo Werner will win the Premier League Golden boot.

Or then again Kai Havertz would have been designated for the Ballon d'Or? Imagine a scenario where I was to let you know that in five years, this Chelsea group would be the most imposing group in Europe by an overwhelming margin.
Everything's pretend, isn't that so? Along these lines, how about we envision; if Chelsea somehow managed to save precisely the same crew for the following five years, I figure we might observe some exceptionally fruitful minutes in football. Particularly from the youthful ability outfit by the Blues as of now.
Various players have marked five-year contracts with the club. These incorporate Werner, Havertz, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. If those agreements start from today, I could see space for huge upgrades for these abilities.
With a youthful gathering of players, we have effectively figured out how to arrive at two FA cup finals and win Europe's most first-class prize, the Champions League. I see players like Havertz and can't help thinking about what will be the following prize for him before he arrives at the age of 26. Bound to become one of Europe's marvel kids, he can satisfy this prescience at Chelsea football club.
Tumblr media
There is no question that a gathering of players as capable as possible proceed to win another Champions League. Inside the following five years, Mount would chief us to another Champions League Final - can you simply envision the scenes. To know more about Chelsea Football Tickets click here.
Chelsea steads fast have been requesting for the 22-year-old to chief the Blues. His pathway is set to mirror that of John Terry's - religion saint, foundation graduate, chief, pioneer, legend. I nearly can't stand by five years to witness this. With all regard for Cesar Azpilicueta, I couldn't want anything more than to see Mount Captain the Blue's before it's an ideal opportunity to sign another agreement.
Listen to me on this one. We've as of now seen looks at Werner's sharp eye for the objective. He showed it at RB Leipzig before making the exchange to Chelsea football club and I'm certain we will see it once more. The forward is as of now back to scoring structure for both club and country. Last season might have been the change he expected to assist with raising his game.
Tumblr media
In this situation, all players will be five years more established, which means Romelu Lukaku would be 33 years old. Despite the way that Didier Drogba had the option to lift his first Champions League prize in great structure at that age, would we have the option to say something very similar for Lukaku?
There are players like Cristiano Ronaldo who say indeed, yet there are likewise players, for example, Sergio Aguero who say no. It is a fascinating discussion to unwind. Despite Lukaku's result, Werner is on the ascent to recapturing his underlying structure from the Bundesliga. With five years to adjust to Premier League football, his executioner impulse will deliver Him 25+ objectives a season striker. Our own special Harry Kane.
This is pretended all things considered. Exposing as a top priority that our crew is still genuinely youthful as of now, the outright pinnacle is on the way. Any semblance of Trevoh Chalobah, Hudson-Odoi, Havertz, Reece James, and Mount are as yet in their mid-20's significance there is a tempest of involvement to come to their direction inside the following, not many years. Experience + quality is the best recipe for an a-list group.
Tumblr media
With Werner, Ben Chilwell, and Ruben Loftus Cheek all set to be thriving a very long time in five years, the universe of football will be their clam. It could be living in fantasy land here. Winning two Premier League football titles and one more Champions League Title inside five years? Doubtlessly not.
To be completely forthright with you, these are generally fantastical cases. How regularly do we see precisely the same gathering of players in a group for a very long time? Checking out Europe, if all groups were to save their players for the following five years with no further increases, not exclusively will Chelsea be amazingly productive, a portion of the European monsters like Bayern Munich and Liverpool would conceivably wind up in interesting mid-table fights in that period.
