FEATURE: 5 Action Scenes That Represented The Best Of Digimon Adventure 2020

Digimon Adventure: — the 2020 reboot that took the "Digi-Destined" from the turn-of-the-millennium classic and filtered them through a story that was more focused on action and adventure — has wrapped. From the onset, it had been a goal of Toei's creative team to overhaul the way battling was portrayed in a Digimon series and I'd say they were pretty successful. If anything, I'll remember this series for giving me some of my favorite scenes of combat in the entire franchise. To celebrate its finale, I'd like to go over five memorable action scenes that encapsulate the best of what the series had to offer.

EPISODE 2: GREYMON AND GARURUMON VS ARGOMON

The first three episodes paid obvious homage to Mamoru Hosoda's film Our War Game!, almost serving as a standalone trilogy before rocketing our characters into the Digital World proper. However, it did set up the stakes of the fight scenes pretty well, granting them a sense of brutal and animalistic physicality. Greymon bit, clawed, charged, laser-blasted, and tail-whipped his way through battles, as did Garurumon, setting us up for a series that took full advantage of the "monster" half of Digital Monster.

EPISODE 14: GREYMON, TOGEMON, AND KABUTERIMON VS KUWAGAMON

One important part of any good fight scene is the layout of the battleground. Whether it's the empty block in the arena that became a field of lonely desperation for Gon when he dueled Hisoka in Hunter x Hunter or the limitless Mirror World in One Piece that gave Luffy the chance to pull out all the stops against the nearly invincible Katakuri, the location not only helps with the atmosphere of the fight but influences the characteristics of the combatants. Here, assaulted by multiple bug monsters in a cramped stone labyrinth, the Champion-level Digimon had to be clever in their maneuvers. It's perfect for Togemon, though. Any space to punch in is a good enough space for her.

EPISODE 24: TAICHI AND METALGREYMON VS DONEDEVIMON

Angered over the fact that Taichi had been swallowed by DoneDevimon, MetalGreymon evolved into Mugendramon. Ripping into his foe uncontrollably (reminiscent of the way SkullGreymon lashed out against his former friends in the original series) it was a pretty barbarous scene for a creature who, just a little while ago, was the very ambassador of courage and Digi-goodwill, Agumon. Mugendramon has served as a foe across multiple Digimon games and anime series, and seeing it be the "dark" evolution of MetalGreymon was a treat.

EPISODE 30: THE EVOLUTION OF WARGREYMON

It's not too uncommon, in any Digimon series, for an episode to be capped off by a glorious new evolution followed by a swift victory thanks to the upgrade in power. Digimon Adventure: had already become known for its lavish evolution sequences, but I think my favorite in this new series was WarGreymon's.

It had been teased since the beginning, with the monster's silhouette being shown in the OP and being seen again at the end of the battle with DoneDevimon. But here, we got the full transformation and then, of course, the enemies realizing that maybe they shouldn't have tangled with the big dinosaur and the goggles-wearing fourth-grader in the first place.

EPISODE 54: REBELLIMON VS BOLTMON

In the best-directed episode of the entire show — courtesy of Nozomu Shishido, assistant director of Dragon Ball Super: Broly, director Episodes 2 and 24 (among others), and director of Adventure:'s final installment — we get a kind of animated dynamism that manages to stick out as worth celebrating and makes the most of the otherworldly designs of the Digimon. In a post-apocalyptic-looking wasteland, Rebellimon makes a last-ditch ride against the imposing Boltmon, and in doing so, discovers the meaning of his life. Of course, the meaning of his life is to "keep fighting but figure out what you're fighting for." But let's be honest — it's the 2020 reboot of Digimon Adventure. It would be weird if the lesson wasn't "Just keep on battling, dude."

And that's that! Hopefully, this list inspires you to check out Digimon Adventure: if you haven't. I've had a really fun time writing articles about this series over the last year-and-a-half and this is as good a time as any for those that missed out to gorge themselves on the whole thing. But as has been the moral of every Digimon series before it, we all gotta grow up and move on someday. Of course, moving on means usually going to the next Digimon series, so I'm sure I'll see you there, too.

Ok well! Episode 5 was a huge improvement! This genuinely felt like Digimon, at least early Digimon anyway. It was fun and action-y, and not completely devoid of character moments. The heart of this episode was Koushirou and that is SO EXCITING. I have crossed all my fingers, toes, and even my eyes that Koushirou will continue to be muy importante, just as much as heavy hitters like Taichi and Yamato are. None of this “backseat crunching numbers” nonsense!

I was disappointed last ep that we didn’t get to see the actual first meeting of Koushirou and Tentomon, but I suppose it probably went something like this:

Tentomon: Koushirou-han! I’ve waited for you!

Koushirou: A digimon! I must analyze your data!

Tentomon: Analyze my...? *blush* At least buy me dinner first!

Well we also get Plotty McPlot stuff right off the bat. Remember the old series where we knew nothing about anything till like right before the first big boss battle?? They ain’t beating around the bush this time. Not sure how I feel about that - as I’ve said before, I loved the “where are we! guess we have to rely on our own incompetence!” concept of Digimon Adventure that siphoned off some of the blatant “this is an RPG” aspect. We don’t have that too much this time around - Taichi is REALLy goal-oriented and seems to even have magic powers?? as in he can read digi-code. My guess is they ALL can, courtesy of their digivices (and maybe I’ve already forgotten if Koushirou or Yamato already did this earlier?). How convenient for the plot that there’s no trouble reading secret messages at all!

^Also appreciated that this literally meant feel the words. As in, touch them.

So Taichi and Sora have had no difficulties finding this special shrine and learning the lore of the digital world. There was a Great War that shifted the balance of light and dark. We are right back in RPG territory.

We see a bunch of familiar faces. I’m not sure if this is the same makeup as previous ancient guardians in other seasons, but it’s got the essential theme at least.

And then some even more familiar silhouettes:

Now who could that be xD Mega evolutions for all confirmed!

So I don’t know if this is supposed to mean Agumon & co are literally reborn versions of these great warriors, but I think that’s what Agumon and Piyomon suddenly bursting into tears while wailing that they don’t know why they’re crying is supposed to be hinting at.

Taichi: I warned not to touch your eyes after chopping onions!

Agumon does not remember being Omegamon or jogressing with Gabumon, but Taichi remembers it. As usual, the children are an essential ingredient to transcending even evolution. The internet is the path that connects the two worlds and is the reason why the human world can be affected by what happens in the digital world if it bleeds through.

Yep, it’s Digimon Adventure. Nothing has changed

^Not even trying to be subtle xD So my current theory is we probably won’t see Takeru or Hikari as full time players until mid-season. I’m kind of hoping the kids find out they can talk to Seraphimon and Ophanimon and specifically go to meet them, only to find out they’re babies now and need constant looking after and don’t know anything helpful at all bahahaha

And here’s another familiar face err loin cloth! Although we already knew he was coming! I love Ogremon. And I find it it not-coincidental that his first real appearance precedes a Mimi episode.

Tentomon and Koushirou have restored my faith in the bonds between children and Digimon in this show.

... Yep, it’s goddamn Digimon Adventure and nothing NOTHING!! at all has changed xD

So I had thought this was DemiDevimon. I think it’s clearly meant to harken back to him but it’s too cool. Soundbirdmon. Not sure how sentient it is. Creepy lil thing. Hikari would still give it a 10/10 would hug

The kind of tech Koushirou carries around puts CSI to shame.

So he’s been in the digital world (well, the network) for like an hour and he’s already trying to get himself killed. Protectiveness masquerading as cold pragmatism. Koushirooooou. You should have some sense of self-preservation. He clearly needs Tentomon - Taichi would need a brick to the head before he’d understand this kid is not being logical here, he is in total panic mode.

oh well it’s the thought that counts!! lol

Thus ends Izumi Koushirou. His voice actor peaced out. “Too many lines, too many kanji, also I don’t like not having wrists.”

... only to then recall that after that, we did Koushirou stuff, which is vastly superior. I mean look how happy he is.

Taichi: I’m so glad! Wait, Kabuterimon? ARE YOU CHEATING ON ME!?!?

Koushirou: *making bad connection noises with his mouth* g-gotta go..!

Koushirou is ready to admit he loves his partner a lot faster than old Adventure Koushirou was...

... or maybe not.

GAWD WHY ARE U SO CUTE

I love their little back and forth here. “You were talking about me!” “N-No I wasn’t!” “Yes you were!” “Was not!” Please keep giving us this quality content Toei. Tsundere Koushirou. I never thought of it. I WANT MOOOORE.

Interesting how he didn’t quite do this to Taichi though. Maybe because Taichi’s compliments were about how talented and awesome he is, whereas Tentomon’s just like “I love you bruh youre my best bruh.” Taichi, get over yourself and tell Koushirou you love him before he leaves you for a literal bug.

Welp.

So this turnip/radish village is just about the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. And I loved the silence of this ending bit. This really did feel like Digimon, a bit more creative and intriguing than anything in episode 4. (Except for Sora and that knife.) This gives me Hope.

But it is WEIRD seeing Mimi get the “mysterious girl” treatment. Hahaha. You’d expect to discover she’s like the lost princess of the digital world. Well, she is. But she’s also going to scream whine cry and make you eat kimchi fried rice with whipped cream and strawberries xD

Mimi!!! I can’t wait to see you!!!

Oh, also! Since I'm on Tumblr, here's a copy of a reddit comment I made regarding the newest patch and the updates (there are not many) to the new action skill stuffs. Minor spoilers ahead, I am on mobile so I'm sorry, but I can't add a read more right now.

Update: no big news yet. Confirmation that Amara's new skill will be called Phasetrance (which may be a placeholder name, since her entire skill set is called Phasetrance) and has a duration.

Zane still has a Shoulder Cannon, which is single-use, and I believe I did find 3 variations of the skill description which I'll add at the end of this comment.

Fl4k still has the Anti Gravity Trap, and Moze still has Iron Cub. I also found something called GRMLN which is not tied to any character (yet?), but has a duration and cooldown. I'm curious if it will be a skill variant for one VH, either through a game-changer skill or an augment, or if it is something else entirely. If it IS a Vault Hunter thing, I'd guess it's Zane (to fit with the SNTNL theme) or Fl4k (to fit with their new Loader Bot pet).

Anyway! Here's what I'm guessing is the shoulder cannon skill description:

/"For stealth missions. Not sure it'll help with the sound of those mechanical launchers, though.",

/For stealth operations. Not sure how it will work with those big missiles.,

/For stealthy night operations. Not sure how it works with all these explosives.,

This is all taken from the localization file that updated yesterday.

Also, fun fact, I found a bunch of alternative skills in that file as well. Most stuff I believe was just cut skills.

For example:

/"While holding your [actionskill]barrier[/actionskill], it [skillbold]regenerates health[/skillbold] and you gain increased [skillbold]Fire Rate[/skillbold] and [skillbold]Reload Speed[/skillbold].",

So, yeah. Zane's Barrier was originally supposed to have a health (capacity) bar, and when it broke, it would refund partial cooldown. Also, the Doubled Agent tree had a Kill Skill that's basically the reverse of Blood Soaked Shields:

/"When [actionskill]Summon Digi-Clone[/actionskill] ends, [skillbold]break[/skillbold] your shield, gain drastically worsened [skillbold]Shield Recharge Delay[/skillbold], and drastically increased [skillbold]Weapon Damage[/skillbold] until your shield fully recharges or Summon Digi-Clone recharges.",

/Killing an enemy [skillbold]restores health[/skillbold] to you and your [actionskill]Digi-Clone[/actionskill] but you lose a portion of your [skillbold]shields[/skillbold]. While your shields are empty this [skillbold]health restore[/skillbold] is increased.,

Very interesting stuff, especially since Zane's Under Cover tree seems to want his shield at full capacity at all times. I personally would've loved these skills as a Band of Sitorak user.

I also found some cool things like this: (If these are in the game, can someone point me attem?)

There's also this line, which has me SHOOK:

Oooh, (possibly future spoilers) I also found a handful of Second Stars and the Fighting for the Septic Throne Ratch quest lines, as well as the Bug TV Producer guy quest. Given the news from Randy that there will possibly be content after dlc4, I am holding out hope we'll get that Second Stars content.

Anyway. I have no pictures to share, because there were no UI updates for the skill trees. Just some UI stuff. Hope this satisfies everyone. Enjoy the patch!! It's hype as hell.

Kizuna Countdown (20th Anniversary/20 Questions) #18

Favorite Tri Installment

Gotta go with Kokuhaku on this one. Of all of the Tri movies, I think this is one of the most focused. It gave us a shocking inciting incident and let things spiral outward in a very natural, emotional, and character-driven way. The scenes between Takeru and Patamon are heatbreaking, and boy, did this movie help me understand Takeru a lot better. The digimon obviously steal the show, and the fact that come to a decision without their partners for their partners was so, so sad and important. And Meiko’s dilemma! And Maki’s swooping in to take care of Hikari after Homeostasis (with That Look in her eyes!). And allllll the scenes with the digis just trying to be with the kiddos. Auuuugh!

As was the case with everything else in Tri, I wish Koushiro had been a bit more... directly involved, somehow. Being behind a desk for almost the entire movie and only really interacting with Tentomon is an unfortunate side-effect of the office setup they gave him. But Tentomon was the real MVP of the Year, holy hell. As if he hadn’t already proven himself one of the most determined and badass of the bunch when Kou was stuck in Vademon’s pocket dimension! Best Bug deserves a medal and a trophy and as many pink aprons as he wants.

(Crunchyroll is giving me timeout issues, but pretend I was able to insert a screenshot of Tentomon carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders and join me in crying over it. TENTOOOOO!!!!)

Day 10 - Favorite Chosen Child-Digimon Bond

Daisuke & V-mon, yes why not. But do we need to talk about the obvious? I will, of course... But first I want to talk about my other favorites. This time, it’s not just the 02 kids, but also some of the Adv kids too.

Starting with...

The iconic duo! What I like in Taichi & Agumon is basically Adventure itself. Like I’ve said, I like the OG anime but what I care more is the cast. Taichi’s relationship with Agumon is so pure and strong, enough to cause Taichi a huge breakdown in 02 when Ken captured Agumon.

Next bond I’ve appreciate so much is...

Sora & Piyomon, because of Garudamon’s debut episode that I’ve watched as a child and had a strong impact on me. I really love how Sora cares a lot about Piyomon after their first adventure, and how Piyomon helped Sora to deal with Mrs. Takenouchi. Enough to make me hella angry at how things went on tri. movie 4.

Next,

Yamato & Gabumon, faves from childhood. I like how a tsuntsun boy with a shy reptile have one of the strongest bonds of the group. Gabumon is also nice but can be cocky sometimes (see tri. movie 1) and I love that one scene from tri. movie 6 were Gabumon literally implied he would fight the entire world for Yamato.

NEXT!!

Joe & Gomamon, because WHY NOT? They are a very nice duo, and it’s incredible their evolution through the OG to 02. Also the JP meme of “JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO” line is the funniest thing given by these two in my opinion.

Next!!

Koushiro & Tentomon, which is a nice concept of a boy and his bug friend. AtlurKabuterimon’s debut episode is so super emotional that I’d have been mad at myself if I do not list them as favorite.

Next!!

Mimi & Palmon, because they’re the best Pals! I love their friendship, their dynamics and how Mimi gave Palmon a mini dress when she was acting as a selfish princess hahaha wow

NEXT!!

Takeru & Patamon, mostly because of tri. movie 3. Their drama was what made me enjoy and consider movie 3 my favorite (ah, same about Koushiro parts too)

NEXT!?

Hikari & Tailmon, because original fave duo! Mentions to how much Hikari cares and loves Tailmon to think the reboot wasn’t a bad thing and that it would’ve been better things to be like that because Tailmon was happy. And none of the abuse Tailmon had suffered were there to haunt her feline friend.

NEXT!!

Iori & Armadimon, the cutest duo ever. I love their dynamics and how Armadimon is always there for Iori, no matter what. All the Iori episodes has some bit of their interaction, and it reinforces their bonds.

NEXT!!

Miyako & Hawkmon, a very good duo. The lady and the knight, Hawkmon’s loyalty to Miyako is so beautiful and every scene about these two is so much precious.

NEXT!!

Ken & Wormmon, the reason is their development in 02 is so much good you can’t convince me otherwise. And their bonds might have been strong since the Kaiser arc as well, but Ken Kaiser was a tsundere boy unable to admit he considered the Worm his precious friend.

AND THE LAST AND MORE IMPORTANT (for me lol):

THEM!! The duo I love so much because they match! They’re so powerful and hilarious together, they’re the cutest little sheet duo I’ve seen in my entire digilife. And the CD Dramas plus movies also reinforces the dynamic and friendship between them enough to make me want to write a big wall of text about them.

But I won’t, because this post had been lost TWICE lol

... WHAT DO YOU MEAN THAT I LISTED ALL OF THEM !? Oops, I told you it’s the bias. I love all 12 and their digis. Don’t look at me I didn’t make the rules.

Digimon Adventure tri. “Reunion” thoughts (Pt. 2)

Now onto the probably less important (or not) stuff:

6.) I remember being really bothered by how different they made the evolution sequences, but again, having not watched Adventure/02 for so long, I wasn’t too bothered by it.

7.) Sora’s characterization(it was taking me a bit too long to talk about my fave, wasn’t it?)! She is still my dearest girl of love and queen of the Digi-verse of course, but obviously I could not go without mentioning this:

The first time I watched this I thought it was at best mildly infuriating, like GIRL, your boyfriend should come first, and why make it seem like she had to ~choose from one of them as a love interest~ but also I remember there was an interview where some writer/producer said “high school is complicated” or something to that degree *facepalm* and I have some suspicions about this; on top of that, now I saw it more as my girl not wanting to upset either of the boys regardless of relationship status, as they’re both very important to her anyways. Still a bit bugged by this, but then there was THIS INFAMOUS SCENE, TOO:

WHY, MIMI, WHY?! Just stir that radioactive-waste-shipping-war pot, won’t ya? Also, what’s with the blushing, Sora?! WRITERS WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MY GIRL?! Still as infuriating as the first time I watched it, but I knew this scene was coming so I just rolled my eyes and ignored it. (Except for taking the screenshots cause I wanted to be ~professional~).

8.) Speaking of Mimi...

Although she was there, she seemed just about as disconnected from it all as Jyou, except in a completely different way?

I mean, look at this. She was getting dragged by a complete stranger to Haneda airport because a Digimon battle was occurring and she was needed there, but she was worried about giving them souvenirs? I know, this might come from Mimi’s purity and all, but I remembered a “better” Mimi in 02? She almost seemed to be made kind of a mild “dumb blonde trope” character, but I might be exaggerating a bit here. Don’t get me wrong, I still found her excitement cute, but a little forced and out of place sometimes. Also, moving back to Japan just as sh*t starts to go down? Okay. :P

9.) From Mimi, onto Koushiro...

He’s still a perfect little nerd, him speaking French was EVERYTHING and confusing Sora while on the phone with her was funny too, but then...

What’s with the crush on Mimi?! I know she was always supposedly the ~pretty girl~ and also hormones at their age BUT... They’re just the kind of opposites that DO NOT attract and DO NOT balance each other out (at least in my opinion), you know? Okay I said this part could get more nitpicky, but also, WHY?

10.) Now let’s stop complaining and get onto some random highlights, shall we?:

• Taichi and Yamato bickering and just particularly Tai being a little sh*t and pissing off Yama is EVERYTHING

•And also the GEM that is “KNIFE OF RAMEN”

•The adorableness that is this scene between the Takaishida bros after Yama asks Takeru if he is talking to a girlfriend:

MY HEART.

• JYOU AND GOMAMON’S REUNION SCENE. Maybe there was something good that came out of Jyou being too worried with school to go with the agents.

• I feel you so much, Yamato-kun

SO. MUCH.

• Bonus point for my baby reprimanding the boys when they’re arguing!

[03 - After The Re:encounter]

He opened the door of his dad’s office room after everyone had left the house, holding a few packages and juice boxes so he could feed the other two. It was like dealing with pets except said pets can eat human food.

Ulforce was still sleeping in the couch, with Natsu in her digimon form on his back. A very adorable scene, except that Daichi had to wake them up.

“Uh, good morning?”

The digimon duo opened their eyes slowly, sitting one next to the other on the couch.

“Man, I’ve been sleepin’ on the cold solid ground of a cave so this whole royal treatment is so good!” Ulforce chirped, smiling “Huh? What’s this? Food?”

“Uh, yeah… I couldn’t cook something without my mom and Kiyoko asking me about the quantity of food so… I brought some snacks and juice.”

“Oh, I miss eating those!!” Natsu cried “It brings me so many good memories…”

“Y-you’ve eaten those before, digi-girl?!” the blue digimon exclaimed.

“Daisuke and I had known each other for years…! I’m an honorary partner digimon of his.”

“That I didn’t know” Daichi seemed happier today “My dad always talked about you being an old friend of his and friends.”

“Mimi and Wallace were okay, but Vee was so jealous of me!”

“Is Vee my father’s partner digimon?” the boy asked “I thought he was just an employee from my dad’s restaurant…”

“Your dad’s partner is Vee, and he can be a little meanie compared to my loyalty to Daisuke.”

She wasn’t fine talking about another digimon, especially the one who didn’t like her at the beginning…

“You kiddin’?! He’s a legend!” Ulforce protested “He beat Chimeramon, Cherubimon Vice, Belial Vamdemon, Boltmon and Pukumon, and Diablomon’s highest form!”

“W-wow, this means… my father were in those stories?!” you can feel Daichi’s joy to hear his father had been a hero in the past.

“Not only him, but also other cool ‘mons too!” the draconian digi-child grinned, “All the Twelve are legendaries! You seem surprised, didn’t you hear about them?! They’re in the books and lore about our worlds as the ones who connected humans and digimons!”

“Um… My parents never had told me that. Actually, I didn’t even know the DigiWorld’s Ambassador was one of those most known heroes too… I’m not sure if I can tell Taisuke about that...”

“They had children” Natsu said vaguely “and they decided to not let anyone else know their identities and keep their children safe.”

That made sense, at least to Daichi.

“When the first kids of the Twelve had born, a lot of discussion between what to do and how to keep them safe happened. Then, Taichi and Daisuke decided they had to keep their identities as a secret and… Requested Homeostasis to do a soft reboot on the worlds. Their digimon kept being known, but the human partners of them got all data and memories deleted from most of the people and digimon’s heads.”

“So… No one knows the identity of the Twelve? But how can my father be controlled by the bad guys right now…?”

“I didn’t say ‘everyone’ but ‘most of them’ had their memories rebooted” she pouted “Some digimon and the Worldwide Chosen Children know their identities. Also them all had their memories untouched.”

“Man, that thing about reboots is annoyin’!!” Ulforce crossed his arms “Lots of stories got taken away! Not just that, but some don’t even believe they existed!”

“Thinking about that… That possibly happened with the first human children who fought for the DigiWorld…”

“So, my dad and ambassador Yagami weren’t the first…?”

She looked down.

“No, Taichi’s from the second generation and Daisuke from the third. The story of the first gen. is a bit of unknown… All we know is that four of their partners evolved into the Holy Beasts to fight the Four Dark Masters.”

“ENOUGH OF STORIES I WANT TO EAT!!” Ulforce roared nervously “I want those there! and that too! Aaah, human food! I’ve dreamed with this day!!”

“Ugh, he’s spending more and more time inside without even taking a break to play with me!”

Kiyoko was not okay again, venting all of her frustrations to Taisuke and Eiji, the ones who she sees as her best friends. Despite of Eiji’s height, he’s twelve like Kiyoko, and only Taisuke is the youngest of the trio, being eleven years old.

“I don’t understand!”

“Have you tried to ask what’s bugging him?” Eiji mused “Sometimes asking is better than jumping to conclusions… I hope that’s not a little intrusive.”

“I tried!” she responded with some annoyance. She was upset with Daichi though, “Today mom left to work and then he just said ‘go play with your friends I have to study’ and… And…!!”

“He’s a meanie!” Taisuke interrupted her “Locking themselves in the office and not even coming to play with us at the park…!”

“Yeah, that!”

Though Eiji realized Taisuke wasn’t talking about Daichi only, but about someone else too…

“Who do they think they are?!” the youngest clenched his fist “They have no time for us, we’re like nothing to them?! I hate it!!”

“Yeah-- Uh, ‘they’ you mean…”

“Sigh, his father” Eiji answered “The ambassador is too busy lately and Taisuke spends more time at my house with my sister and me.”

“Oh… Yeah, I’ve heard the news” she frowned “There’s something big happening, some guys causing a fuss because of the digimon and some digimon causing a fuss because of us.”

“My dad is also busy…” he added “We barely see him these days.”

“I’m mad…!” Taisuke growled.

“At least you two aren’t hearing weird theories that my dad is dead and no one can admit that, like Daichi’s doing on a daily basis every time we talk...”

“We don’t relate to that issue but we feel sorry, Kiyoko.”

“Thanks Eiji…”

“I’d have said it’s okay to spend time studying, but honestly Daichi’s case is somehow unhealthy. Does he skip meals or pull all nighters?”

“Huh, not that I know… If he weren’t going to school I’d have said he has turned into a complete shut-in.”

“That’s a problem then… He needs to exercise at least once per day…”

“Why care about him,” Taisuke rolled his eyes “He chose that path. Let him face the consequences.”

“I don’t want to let Daichi’s health get bad…” she kept voicing her concerns “He’s definitely suffering the most with that anxiety about dad. Maybe we can do something?”

“... ‘we’ like, me and Eiji?!”

Eiji glanced at her and then started thinking of something. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

After the digimon finished their breakfast, them and Daichi started examining the mysterious D-TimeRune device given by Skuld. The boy explained then that the digivice’s design reminded him one of the several retro phones his best friend had collected.

But that made no sense to the blue digimon, since he never had seen said phone before and Daichi’s description of that sounded like a digivice to him while Natsu kept in silence. Daichi sighed, then changed the entire subject.

“I… I tried talking to mom about what we know but…”

“ ‘But’ …?”

“I lost courage,” he sighed.

“But you HAVE to tell her and Taichi!” Natsu wasn’t happy with that answer.

“I know, I know! But seems they’re too busy to hear me out!” he babbled “I can try to send him an e-mail or a voicemail… And try to talk with mom when she’s home from work tonight!”

“At this pace better you take me back to the DigiWorld so I can beat that--” Ulforce was threatened by Natsu’s deathly glare “--that m-man and then bring it back home f-for you, kid!”

“... mrs. Skuld said I can… Do something about that.”

He looked at the digivice.

“What if I use this power to prevent my dad from being captured?”

“H-Hold on, Daichi” the pink digimon gasped “You shouldn’t mess with space-time! Awful things happen to those who defy the laws of Space-Time.”

“How do you know that?” both Ulforce and Daichi frowned.

“... Feminine intuition.”

“But we can try… I won’t mess things enough to change the entire course of story!”

“Ryou, Taichi and Daisuke never messed with time, just traveled through parallel worlds. You messing with time might be worse than anything. You can end up destroying this world’s timeline or…”

“... Making me to not exist anymore?”

“Yes.”

“Whoa, wait can all of those happen?!” that V-mon definitely felt concerned with that idea.

“Natsu,” Daichi glared at her “If you had this power to save my father, would’ve you taken the chance to change his fate… Or would’ve you let him suffer and be seen as a traitor?”

“H-how do you know about that part… About him being accused of--”

“If he’s a hero and is working for the evil, then they will treat him as a traitor until proven otherwise. It’s logical. I don’t know if mom and ambassador Yagami think he’s innocent, but you do! We do!”

“Except Ulforce, though”

“I didn’t know he’s the kid’s father COME ON!!”

“But…” she looked at the boy with some concern in her face “I think it’s better to let the adults solve it. Have faith in your parents and Taichi, they will solve it--”

“I know my father is friends with Ambassador Yagami, but now that he’s on an important role, he will ignore boundaries and do what’s right for the digimon. He won’t go easy on dad, and might… Might do something wrong.”

“And why do you think that…?”

“Because as I remember, this is a threat to the human world and it might force Ambassador Yagami to put an end on this, by killing my dad.”

“... I think he wouldn’t--”

“No, he would. He’s a responsible adult, not a leader from a children’s group.”

“Hey, kid’s right” Ulforce added “If he let his mom and this Yagami-dude know about Lupinmon they gotta ground kid and do the wrong thing!”

Natsu felt conflicted. Especially because she knows Daisuke would’ve preferred her to keep Daichi and Kiyoko away from him to avoid misfortune, but on the other hand Daichi is the only one able to do something and save Daisuke.

“Please, Natsu!” Daichi begged her.

“I don’t know!!” she cried “Daisuke’s very important to me, but his children is also important! I can’t let you do something risky-- I...”

“My father would’ve done the same for me! I know it!”

Natsu’s imagination worked all again, her imagining Daisuke in front of her smiling and approving the idea of Daichi becoming a hero like him. It made her eyes shine and she nodded her head many times that the boy and blue digimon felt scared.

“LET’S GO!” she yelled “To save your father and the worlds!”

“But kid needs a partner digimon first, doesn’t he?” Ulforce looked at the digivice and then to Daichi, “This means he needs to… Return there.”

“Let’s go,” the boy nodded “If I get partnered with a digimon, I can save my father.”

“... I can’t be your partner” Natsu looked away “I can’t, sorry.”

“Who’s sayin’ it will be you!?” Ulforce pouted “Also why would he pick you!?”

“I understand” Daichi smiled “You don’t want to fight my father, is it?”

“... Let’s say it's that.”

“Then, you won’t be forced to! Now let’s go to the Digital World, I will find a digimon who’s willing to fight alongside me and then save my father and the the world.”

So, chatting with my friend, Moezy, we were listing our top 10 (.5) anime guys that we liked in all anime and/or manga that we have watched/read...here is my list starting from 10.

10. Kogami Shinya from Psycho-Pass.

Badass and intelligent. I just love this guy. His backstory is a sad one, but it’s not something that he regrets. He can be a bit emotional, but really, who isn’t? What I like about him is that he knows what the right thing is morally, but he just can’t help his emotions. He knows when he is doing the wrong thing, but won’t run from it either and accepts the consequences of his actions. And he isn’t bad to look at either!

9. Roy Mustang from Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.

This guy is such a dork, but also badass. Powerful and smart, with a cool head (most of the time, which is funny, considering he uses fire). Like Shinya, he can also be a pretty emotional guy, and he uses his past as a reminder to not stray from his goal. He is also in one of my favorite ships, but that’s for another post. Also, did I mention he’s such a dork? lol

8. Yuri Lowell from Tales of Vesperia.

Now this guy is how you do a likable main character. Cocky and sarcastic and loves teasing his friends. He is also has a strong belief in stepping in and doing something about whatever wrongdoings is happening right in front of him, even if it means breaking the law and becoming a vigilante. He’ll do anything he can to set things right for those around him. Not so much of a sad past, but still a fun character! I love his sarcastic attitude at times.

7. Kai Hiwatari/Ray Kon from Beyblade 2001/V-force/G-Revolution

Okay I’m cheating a little bit here, but I just couldn’t decide who I liked more. Let’s begin: Kai: The cold emo Russian/Japanese boy with blue/gray hair. His past is extremely sad and it is understandable why he is such a cold jerk. However, I found his growth in the series amazing. He started off being forced to be a Team Captain for his group. This annoyed him to no end as he wanted nothing to do with the happy bunch. As time went on, however, he gained a soft spot for them and even started to become a real captain, giving advice and caring for their well-being. At first, he was prideful, so very prideful... but as time went on, that pride still remained, but only changed. He takes pride in beating his opponents fair and square and defending his comrades. (Despite betraying them 3 times in 3 seasons but...I chalk up the very first time to PTSD and mind-control of his past...other 2 times... well, that pride problem right?). Also, the irony, a cold emo FIREUSER. Right? lol

Ray: My Chinese catboy! Ray is very friendly and reserved. I was instantly drawn to him when I first saw him. Ray is one of the reasons why white tigers are my favorite animal. He will do anything for his friends and even a stranger if they need help. He always listens to both sides of the story before making a judgement and is the guy to go to for advice. Though later in the series, he does have his own personal battles which causes him to become a bit cocky and jerkish at times, but what can you expect from a nice guy who always put himself last and just wanted to do something for himself for once? Self-care, Ray! Self-care. And he isn’t the only catboy on this list...

6. Kimura Kouichi from Digimon Frontier

Another emo boy! But not a jerk like Kai. Kouichi’s past made me like this character so much and his struggle with his inner demons throughout the series is what made me love him. He was the first character to show me that the power of Darkness does not have to be evil, for without Darkness, there is no Light. He always holds a place in my heart is one of my favorite digi characters.

5. Eizen from Tales of Berseria

I wasn’t sure where to place Eizen. I had to think long and hard. At first I thought at putting him at 7, but then I realized I just loved this dork just a little more than the other characters. The comically serious... no seriously, this guy can fanboy at the silliest things with a straight face, like arguing over the name of a bug...or wanting to build underground tunnels...on an island... ...yeah... ANYWAY, I just love this guy because of his morals and creed. He never compromises his ideals and always faces the consequences of his actions. Yeah another one of those huh? Hm, starting to see a pattern here... Oh yeah, touch his little sister, and he’ll beat your face in and break all 10 of your fingers. Seriously, just...don’t touch Edna. Why couldn’t he be 1,000 years younger (2,000 in Zestiria...)? Such a badass long living adult!

4. Narumi Ayumu from Spiral. It’s a shame this manga isn’t that popular as Ayumu is a great character and his growth is amazing in the manga (not so much in the anime..) His growth is both sad and inspiring. He is such an inspiring character for me. He starts off as a stoic, with having no confidence in himself at all because of his brother, since he is constantly being compared to him and is reminded he can never be as good as his brother (I can relate)... but by the end of the series, despite all the sad things that has happened to him, he learned to smile in the end, no matter how painful. I really can’t go into details about why I love him so much, but you’ll just have to read the manga to find out why!

3. Niwa Daisuke and Dark from D.N.Angel

Yes I’m cheating again, but this is my list, okay?! Daisuke: I love this guy to death. A bit clumsy and timid, but never gives up. Always smiling and managing to find the best in people, even those who keep convincing him he is the enemy, he can end up friends with and change anyone with just that smile. However, even he is not all smiles and has his own concerns... even so, Daisuke doesn’t let such things get him down for long. He is a naturally empathetic person, and I have never seen him cry for himself. He cries for others, but also knows when to be reserved.

Dark: I wasn’t sure if I wanted Dark here or Hiwatari Satoshi, as they both have equally sad pasts. However, seeing as Dark lived for over 400 years and still manages to put up a cocky womanizing front to spare the feelings of others, Dark won out in the end. Again, can’t go into much detail, but the manga is amazing. I like Manga Dark so much more than his anime counterpart.

2. Sawada Tsunayoshi from Katekyo Hitman Reborn!

Ah yes my favorite series of all time....so then why is Tsuna at number 2?! Well, I’ll get to that when I get to number 1. Like Daisuke, Tsuna is a pretty empathetic person who cares for his comrades. He doesn’t necessarily have a sad past, but his growth is amazing in the series. Because he is around, he managed to help his friends through their own emotional turmoils and is just the light of the series to everyone.

1.5 Zeno from Yona of the Dawn/Akatsuki no Yona

Zeno and my number 1 favorite have ALOT in common, which is why I put him at a 1.5. Despite this, Zeno does have alot of things I like him for him. I love the fact that Zeno does not hesitate to help his family or be in pain for them when the situation calls for it. It is the only thing he can do to help and despite always being in pain, he would rather have all the pain in the world than to have pain inflicted on his family. That is what I love about him most. Of course, his silly childish side is so lovable too! Him and Eizen can talk about the suckiness of living a long life together...

Of course, for this guy, I strictly talking about the manga, not the anime...the anime just does not show how awesome and badass he is.

Like Zeno, he is also a very empathetic person who always wants to protect his family. What I like about Train the most is, though, like Zeno, despite having one of the saddest pasts, and has all the reason in the world to go around being bitter and emo, he decides not to. He decides it’s better to smile, have fun, and make the most out of life. He does have some tendencies to become emo, but only when the situation calls for it. And despite being childish and silly, always having fun, he never let’s that get in the way of being serious and protecting those close to him when needed. He always tries to cheer everyone up in a bad situation, and is not above asking for help when he really needs it. Not to mention, he’s a catboy and left-handed at that, like me! All my favorite things in one!

Okay I know that kingdom hearts has a bad reputation for sticking crucial plot information on obscure spinoff games but HOLY SHIT I just finally watched a lets play of the fuckin digimon tcg game and found out it ACTUALLY HAS A GODDAMN CONCLUSION TO ANALOGMAN FROM DIGIMON WORLD 1

like 90% of the damn game has no plot whatsoever let alone indicating its a digimon world sequel! and then suddenly in the last battle without being foreshadowed whatsoever analogman returns and gets possibly the best boss battle ever IN A GODDAMN TCG GAME

holy shit his whole fight is framed as ‘this is literally the same guy from digimon world 1, hacking another game’, the interface wigs out and a bunch of fake command windows pop up with rapidly scrolling code of the game supposedly falling apart. And then his boss battle flips the entire gameplay system on its head by giving him fourth wall breaking special moves that pull overpowered effects by “hacking the engine”, with cool animations to fit. Fuckin badasssss!!

and it also fuckin FINALLY EXPLAINS THE DAMN PLOT LIKE GEEZ

digimon world’s conclusion was so rushed, you never even meet the villain until the final battle and it ends all weird with just “something” going wrong that causes him to get sucked into a portal or something while screaming dramatically in weirdly high resolution terror faces??? the tcg game confirms that this was him attempting to flee back to the human world after you defeated him, but one of the stray attacks from the battle damaged his machine and it caused him to essentially commit accidental suicide when he turned it on.

and HOLY SHIT MY FUCKIN OBSCURE HEADCANON IS TRUE????

the game had some sequel bait hints that maybe analogman is somehow still around and that the portal explosion just turned him into “corrupted data” so he can never return to the human world. and i always thought it would be super ironic if he actually got turned into a digimon aka the thing he hates more than anything

WELL OKAY I GUESS CRITICAL LORE IN A TCG GAME IS OKAY WHEN ITS A BIG YES BUNNI U THEORY BE CORRECT

he appears in this game as a malomyotismon who does a damn good vexen face during the fight, lol. And he’s all “gahh that stupid kid ruined my plans but this accursed body at least improved my hacking abilities!” Tho its implied that his corrupted state is more like a bodyless cloud of data that can possess/copy different digimon, which would be REALLY FUCKIN CRITICAL to explaining the goddamn plot of Digimon World Next Order!

Seriously wtf is up with this series? Digimon World 2 is not the sequel to Digimon World 1, all the numbered games are entirely separate individual stories with wildly different genres from pet sim to roguelike strategy. The real sequel is fucking DIGIMON THE CARD GAME THE GAME and then Digimon World Next Order a bazillion years later for the ps4. In which i am STILL REALLY SALTY that they have a FUCKIN RAD remix of analogman’s boss theme yet he doesn’t appear in the game. The added context of this damn tcg game confirms once and for all that the Ambiguous As Fuck Ending actually WAS him appearing in the game, this unexplained “oh wait the villain was good all along and he was just possessed by an evil virus” was supposed to be corrupted-digi-analogman and seriously WHY DONT THEY JUST FUCKIN EXPLAIN IT!!! this tcg game wasnt even released in europe!! and even american fans probably had no clue it was linked to this entirely separate subseries! You have to friggin piece it together with context clues like the battle music and the fact analogman’s signature mon was machinedramon. I mean vjesus christ Next Order is a litera; sequel with the grown up version of Digimon World’s protagonist as a badass home ec teacher who still defends the digital world in his free time yet you couldnt spare ONE LINE OF DIALOGUE mentioning the name of the villain?? and summarizing the fuckin tcg game everyone missed??? AND CONFIRMING THAT THE VILLAIN IS INDEED MAKING A REAPPEARANCE POSSESSING THIS GUY??? oh god everything makes SENSE, thank you terrible card game adaptation. ehh but i do still love Next Order for making Hiro/Mameo’s canon partner Mamemon, he’s even more badass as this big tough bishie version of himself with a tiny adorable pal that can shoot rocket fists through space and time. (its funny tho cos the DW1 intro movie showed metalmamemon and metalgreymon and the american boxart flipped a coin and decided metalgreymon must have been the one the protagonist was using in that scene. Whoops!)

anyway even with the added context that IT WAS INDEED GODDAMN ANALOGMAN, the final boss fight in Next Order was as terrible as the rest of the plot. So I’m glad trash gramps got a suitably badass boss fight after all, even if it was a CARD GAME VERSION! lets all celebrate the awesomeness of this obscure fuckin spinoff game’s obscure fuckin intercontinuity cameo with the boss fight music that other game wasted

seriously fuckin hell the biggest challenge in that final boss was that i was so distracted by SHEER OFFENDEDNESS at the cool music not matching it that it was hard to keep focused

its not just a great boss theme for a terrible boss, its a really fuckin EMOTIONAL song for anyone whose childhood was fuckin defined by the first game!!!

and look you had a PERFECT FUCKIN EXCUSE for a REALLY GOOD boss battle against MY MAN GRUMPY GRANDPA OF THE COOL DAMN NAME. Seriously guys analogman was THE FIRST digimon villain! digimon world came out before the anime, digimon world was the BETA FOR THE ANIME! this was the first place they had the ideas for file island, so much of the areas in the game are awkwardly mistranslated versions of stuff that would later appear in the anime in a different form. before this digimon had never been anything more than a fuckin 2-bit graphics tamagotchi and this was (after the manga) only the second goddamn time these monsters had an actual full colour character design! all of those charmingly janky 90s gross out show styled tcg illustrations? that was concept art that this game was working from! fuckin hell this game thought up the idea for metalgreymon’s changed design that ended up becoming the iconic partner of tai in the anime. (you can also see beta tai in the manga with a beta veemon as a partner instead! o_O)

I HAVE FEELINGS ABOUT ANALOGMAN OKAY!!! he’s a badly written guy with only like five sentences across all the videogames but fuckin hell he was such an Iconique part of the development of this series that they named him fucking ANALOGMAN

like dude you could have SO EASILY made me scream at my tv in a more positive way by bringing him out as the surprise villain and showing us wtf his deisgn is even supposed to look like cos god all we have is a blurry faceless early ps1 model buried under the glow filters of Mt Infinity’s funky background effects.

man god i didnt expect a fuckin TCG GAME to revive my righteous fury from back when i first played that piece of shit. i hate it cos Next order is so pretty and its gameplay is so good and i really loved my twin digis but there were SO MANY bugs and cut corners and missing content and really bad writing and GOD it made me so sad that the dub team really really tried, they tried so hard that they got fuckin renamon’s original voice actress back even though the renamon in this game has nothing to do with the anime one. THE DUB WAS REALLY GOOD BUT IT COULDNT SALVAGE THAT SCRIPT!! THE MUSIC WAS REALLY GOOD AND THE ART WAS REALLY GOOD AND THE DIGIMON THEMSELVES WERE MY BEST DAMN FRIENDS FOR THAT MONTH OF MY LIFE BUT THE GODDAMN FUCKIN SCRIPT!!! the postgame was MORE FUN because FINALLY everything opened up like the sandbox of the first game and you could just fuckin hug u digis without being distracted by constant cutscenes butchering your childhood nostalgia

man i wanted to write a fic/draw a comic about my headcanons on how to fix it but i never managed to do it cos holy shit it was basically “throw everything out and make a different game geez” I COULD RAMBLE FOR HOURS ABOUT THE ENTIRELY DIFFERENT SEQUEL THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN!! and a fuckin!! tcg game!! was closer to that sequel!!!

oh! and the female protagonist design! thats another rare good part of that thing! i loved the pixellization effect on her ponytal, way better than the male equivelant having a very ordinary costume design just with a pixel corner taken out of his jacket. also why did the plot never actually make a thing out of that? like you’d think that ‘unlike every other digimon tamer i’ve got this scar of my digitization’ would be a plot point. like they didnt give everyone else a cool pixel squares mark! they could have at least used it as an excuse why the protagonist is the Only Chosen One who can do all this plot shit. or if it was me i would have made it early foreshadowing for the Return Of Business Gramps, like you were partially infected by the Oooo Mysterious Unexplained Digi Virus (seriously why did they not just have ONE SENTENCE explaining its the fuckin original villain returning????) during the prologue and i dunno somehow that gives you powers to break analogman’s control on the digimon he possesses. or maybe the pixel thing is like a tracking device he put on you? or just give that cool design trait to the protagonist of digimon cyber sleuth instead, whose entire plot is that theyre a digimon human hybrid with literaly the power to pixellize themself into computers.

they really fuckin hyped up in all the prelease materials that the digimon world 1 protagonist was gonna be in this game and he’s all grown up now. and then he does NOTHING in the plot except babble exposition and stand around your home base. and has one line about how he’s a badass teacher now and his partner is mamemon but hey we made a bullshit excuse for why his digimon is sealed away and he never gets to fight :<

give me an actual cool teamup of new protag girl and her cool teacher dude beating the shit out of business trash with their bare fists and also their digimon’s bare fists while THE BEST DAMN MUSIC GOES UNWASTED
