No wonder, that as early as in 1934, Budapest was awarded the supreme title “Spa City”. Three years later, the first International Balneological Congress was organised, and the seat of the International Balneological Association was established at the Gellért Thermal Bath in Budapest. The Congress reasoned with the following words: “…no city can put forward a stronger claim to this than Budapest. Endowed by nature with a wonderful generosity of excellent thermal waters and unrivalled natural beauty; additionally, its high medical professionalism, the excellent equipment of its healing institutions, the high level of scientific research, makes Budapest the optimum choice for international affairs of balneology to be handled from here…” The Gellert Bath and Hotel itself was built in the preceding decades, and opened its doors in 1918. Outdoor pools were added later on, and today it combines modern technical developments with rich historical heritage.

Börzsöny is located in Northern Hungary, not far from the capital, Budapest. These mountains are the remains of an old andesite volcano, which was active from about 16 to 14 million years ago. The area of Börzsöny is 600 square km, most of which is covered by forest.

In the medieval times gold, silver and further metals were mined here. #Börzsöny was among the first places from where the element Tellurite was described in the late 18th century. The mountains show a different face in each season. The busiest one is summer, with warm temperatures and long days. In wintertime, if snow is present, hikes can get challenging in the short daytime.

Mai Manó, Imperial and Royal Court Photographer (1855-1917) had his eight-story studio-house and home built in fourteen months in 1893-94. A professional photographer and specialist, in his time he was one of the best specialists of child portraits. His status in the professional community of that time is uncontested. He was also the founder and editor of the periodical called A Fény (The Light, launched in 1906) The building’s richly decorated neo-renaissance façade clearly served ideological purposes: Mai Manó wanted to lend a past to the young trade, hardly considered to be a form of art by anyone at that time. Take the majolica putti between the ground floor and the mezzanine or the façade paintings on the third floor showing the “six muses of photography”. Actual photographing took place in the Sunlight-studio on the second floor, we restored in 1996-97. During the restoration, we found the original frescoes hiding bethind the white wallpaper for decades. These used to serve as background for Mai’s portraits. His studio worked in the house for four decades, until 1931. It was followed by a luxury-bar, Arizona, which was closed in 1944.Mai Manó House open since November, 1998. The reconstruction of the building – has been sponsored by the Hungarian State and planned by Szántó and Mikó Architects – is not far from completion.

St, Gellert statue #Budapest #Gellerthill #budaoestsnow St Gellert Monument in the side of the picturesque Gellert Hill, Budapest, is an impressive statue of St Gell��rt, the first Hungarian bishop, and the master of the first Hungarian king, St Stephen (as in the St Stephen Basilica). The #StGellertmonument consists of a soaring statue of the bishop and the waterfalls underneath – looking over the white #ElizabethBridge. You can easily walk up the stairs leading to the monument and take some panoramic photos. Gellert (Gerard) was an Venetian monk and missionary who was to help to convert the native Hungarians into Christianity. However, in 1046, after the death of #KingStStephen St Gellert was killed during the rival's fight for the throne connected also with some pagan resistances. The bishop was hurled to his death in a spiked barrel from the Gellert Hill (supposedly, the monument marks the spots of the brutal execution. The 7 m high statue was erected in 1904, from the donation of #FranzJosephI.
