A Genie of an Award
I wish to congratulate Jamie Smart on winning the British Book Awards for a couple of illustrated categories.
I celebrate the occasion with Brian, from My Own Genie, from D.C. Thomson & Co., Ltd's The Dandy, where I first discovered Jamie's work.
(That, and Space Raoul in the Funday Times. Whatever happened to that paper? Maybe David Fickling Books' The Phoenix Comic ought to bring it back, right?)

richardcarmitage @britishbookawards I didn’t win but the evening was amazing. I met the incredible LJRoss, watched Davina McCall get two awards and I heard Salman Rushdie speak so movingly about freedom of expression. So honoured just to be included in the room of incredible artists. 🙏

The Tenderness of Wolves by Stef Penney
A glimpse of the fading days of the dominance of the Hudson's Bay Company, woven into a gripping tale of murder, lust and individual courage
If I write a debut novel, I want it to be as good as this one. Stef Penney’s tale of Laurent Jammet and his unexpected murder leads us, through two different perspectives, into a stark world of rivalry and greed, addiction and control, wilderness and downfall. I have to say that I was very taken with this book. The subject matter always appeals to me – the hardness of life in the days of…
