Past and Present: Cheryl Dunye’s The Watermelon Woman

Last year, Special Collections and Archives at the University of Iowa Libraries acquired items to form a new collection: the Black Film and Television Collection. In honor of Black History Month, we’re shining a spotlight on a different item from this collection each week.

In yesterday’s post, we discussed the original script for 1971’s Shaft, a defining entry in the Blaxploitation genre. Our final spotlight shines on a unique photo book from 1996, when Cheryl Dunye’s The Watermelon Woman attempted to excavate the history of queer Black women on screen.

Cheryl Dunye and New Queer Cinema

With The Watermelon Woman, Dunye became the first Black lesbian to direct a feature film. This movie belongs to a genre that came to be called New Queer Cinema, a movement in independent film during the 1990s that placed queer characters at the center.

The film was critically acclaimed and regarded as one of the foundational films of the genre, and it was added to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry in 2021.

It also gave new momentum to Dunye’s career in film and television, which continues to this day. Her recent directing credits include The Umbrella Academy, Bridgerton, and Queen Sugar.

Unnamed & Uncredited

The Watermelon Woman stars writer and director Cheryl Dunye as an aspiring documentarian who works at a video rental store. Dunye’s fictional proxy, also named Cheryl, is fascinated by the history of Black women in film, particularly those who went unnamed and uncredited for roles portraying the racist archetypes that were common in the cinema of the 1930s and 40s.

In the movie, Cheryl embarks on a journey to discover the name of Black actress only identified as “The Watermelon Woman.” She eventually uncovers the woman’s real name, Fae Richards, and discovers that she, too, was a queer woman.

A Supplementary Archive

Fae Richards may be a fictional character, but she stands for countless queer Black people whose stories have been omitted from the record. Artist Zoe Leonard, in collaboration with Cheryl Dunye, created The Fae Richards Photo Archive, a series of 82 images that document the life of this fictional character. From candid shots, family photos, and publicity pictures, every image matches a time and place of this character. As the Whitney Museum of American Art explains, “Leonard acknowledges the project’s artifice, encouraging the viewer to recognize that she had to create a story that is fictional, but rings true, because the real life counterparts of such stories went undocumented.”

This statement demonstrates exactly why many archives are, or need to, work to fix the mistakes of the past. As a school with a rich screenwriting history, it is why the University of Iowa Libraries is actively working to collect more stories from Black cinema.

A Century of Black Film

During this series, we’ve looked at four iconic examples of Black filmmaking. But that’s not to say that the work of Black filmmakers can be reduced to four eras, or that the films we discussed are more important than those that didn’t make this list. There’s so much more to discover in the Black Film and Television Collection, and if you’ve enjoyed this blog series, we encourage you to check out what’s available online. As The Watermelon Woman attests, the preservation of these stories, and the names and lives behind them, is vital and rewarding work.

Last year I ranked the lines of the CharlottexGeorge love confession scene from Queen Charlotte for absolutely no reason. Instead of deleting it I thought I’d share 🤣

1. “I will tell you where you are” - This line is so underrated. The best part of the declaration. Her strength and vulnerability in this moment were beautiful to watch. She really put it all out there when he has given her every reason to run, from her POV. Team Charlotte before team George.

2. I will stand with you between the heavens and the earth - Just another powerful line. Imagine someone saying yeah imma fight your demons for you???? SHE LOVES THIS MAN!!! We stan. It does something to me that I cannot explain.

3. “From the mo-“ - Something about this break in speech gets me. Really shows how much he means what he’s saying and how deep his feelings are. Something about showing emotion IN YOUR VOICE will have me on my knees EVERY SINGLE TIME.

4. “I have loved you desperately” - THIS IS WHAT WE NEED IN MEN. In partners in general but DEFINITELY in more men bc rn MEN SUCK. I think this is what draws me to the Bridgerton men (except for Colin. I hate that man. S3 will make me vomit. I’m here for Penelope’s happiness and Penelope’s ALONE). They love completely and desperately (the women too but the men are always the focus bc misogyny, probably) I feel like it takes a lot of strength to do that. It’s beautiful. It’s rare. I’m obsessed.

5. “My heart calls your name” - The line everyone is obsessed with, and for good reason. He ate with this one. I would’ve melted then and there. No wonder they had so many kids

6. “Do you love me?!” - QUEEN SHIT!! Would be higher if those other lines didn’t have me clutching my soul

7. “I cannot breathe when you are not near” - Just another iconic line. Going back to the point about loving desperately. Also HE MEANS IT! Like his actions match his words match his energy and I am LIVING FOR IT!!

8. “From the moment I saw you trying to go over the wall” - Cute. I’m not a “love at first sight” girly so it had me like “yeah sureeeeee” but also it just makes me think about how long he’s been holding himself back😭 so we circle back to cute.

9. “I LOVE YOU” - 8/10 line. We waited forever for it, but I love a slow burn so that’s okay. Very generic though. 0/10 for creativity, 10/10 for yelling but also why are you yelling at her???? But cute.

10. “I love you Charlotte” - Generic line. Nothing new or spicy. Give me something to sink my teeth into! Still cute though bc it came at the end of that long ass speech 🥹 also the way he says it. He has completely surrendered to his feelings and I love that for them.

Medieval Career Defaults

Alright, I’ve got another mod for you. It’s not as fabulous as my face templates but potentially useful to other simmers who do historical gameplay.

There are some amazing career replacements on Plumbob Keep by Bethgael and Morganna, but they don’t quite cover all the maxis careers, and I would have sims wanting to become a journalist/entertainer/etc and having to just ignore those wants, letting them take up slots. I decided to make my own, and I would never have figured it out without this tutorial from episims so props to them.

Also I tried to make these as flexible as I could for different historical games. Note that I am not a history professor or anything like that and please don’t send me hate mail just because I got some detail wrong. I play my historical hoods (some mix of medieval, regency, victorian, cavemen.. I have a westeros neighborhood too) pretty much based on aesthetics and I’m sorry if some details aren’t completely accurate. I’m also very new to modding and haven’t done much except edit the flavor text and chance cards. I don’t know how to make new icons, change the career rewards, and I’m not even sure if the text on the ltws will match the new career names.

Today I have a few defaults for you, for three different careers. I do plan to upload a couple more of them later as well. I included versions with the maxis pay and with pay reduced by about one half since I find my sims get too rich too quickly with maxis pay, especially for historical sims. More details under the cut but I’ll put the links up here because I get a bit rambly lol.

Artist - replaced with.. artist. But there’s no fashion photography, comic book writing, making llama souveniers, etc. There is some art forgery and the top level is still called “visionary” but the chance cards are altered to be more period accurate. In the medieval times, artistry was considered to be much more of a practical and well paying career than it is nowadays. Artists worked in workshops where a master artist would enlist apprentices and other underlings to fulfil commissions. Your sim will go from an apprentice, work their way up through a workshop, and eventual become a royal artist.. until their work is so universally revered that they are considered a visionary.

Entertainer replaced with.. entertainer. I swear not all of them are this boring lol. It’s mostly very similar, lots of juggling, ventriloquism, singing for knights at court, becoming a court jester etc. There are a couple of “woohoo work” levels just to be warned. Custom chance cards, meant to fit the time period.

Journalism replaced with.. poet. Now this one requires some explanation. I had a lot of trouble coming up with this one. Newspapers are a pretty new invention, considering that so many people didn’t know how to read during the medieval era. News was delivered by town criers for many years, which I could not figure out how to make a 10 level maxis career out of. Sometimes news was delivered on little brochures like Lady Whistledown in Bridgerton, and news papers obviously became a thing at one point but I would have to do so much research to try to make that accurate at all and the way it works varies significantly across times and places. I ended up making a Shakespeare inspired poet/playwright career. Again, custom chance cards to make it period accurate.

I’m planning defaults for the adventurer and intelligence careers as well. The adventurer career will be just called dread pirate and filled with 10 levels of pirate stuff. The intelligence default is based on the spies from sims medieval. I have a lot done, I just haven’t finished the chance cards for those two careers. Chance cards are hard and take forever to write. I worked really hard on the ones in these so I hope you enjoy!

Fashion Inspiration: Clueless

I’m starting a little series about how I would put together outfits inspired by classic Pink Academia movies- Clueless, Mean Girls, and Legally Blonde. Let me know if you want to see any others!

So, right off the bat, one of the best fashion moments in cinema has to be Cher and Dionne struting into school in those matching sets, and nothing will ever beat that. And Tai has that pink one when she MURDERS Cher with the line "you're a virgin who can't drive." There's plenty of plaid and other preppy patterns in bright colours, but the three main girls have individual style to take inspiration from.

Cher: Although Cher's seasonal wardrobe ranges from iconic plaid, fluffy jackets, and sheer shirts, there are also some really sweet, underratd dresses. Sure, they're not as show-stopping as the yellow set that was even Ashley B's 'fit in Recess, but if I were putting together an outfit inspired by Cher, I would actually lean into her inspiration: Jane Austen's Emma. Cher wears a cute red empire-waist dress that Amber copies, and a pretty sage one in the spring, so a cute way to emulate Cher without going for the more typical plaid skirt look would totally be an Austenian moment- very on-trend for Bridgerton stans too.

Dionne: Di's colour palette is vibrant and bold, and her style also features a lot of preppy classics such as the iconic plaid look at the start, and many short skirts sweater vests; but Dionne's signature is taking a classic, almost old money sillhouette and throwing a modern, bold twist onto it such as citrus-coloured shirts tied in the front in the series, or her iconic hats and headwear in the movie. I think an outfit inspired by Dionne should take any old money look you want but in a vibrant colour or quirky pattern, and paired with a statement hat.

Tai: Tai to me is the most subdued, showing that she doesn't come from the same wealth as Cher and Dionne, but she still develops her own preppiness. I think she's at her most balanced towards the end, when she's learned about fashion but has calmed down after her argument with Cher. I think the outfits that are the most herself are the green cardigan/brown skirt fit that she's photographed for Elton in, or the cute t-shirt sh wears to watch Travis skate- neutral, "masculine" colours that still have a classic, preppy look to them Alternatively, I think the floral/dungarees outfit is one of the cutest and it captures a playful femininity that I adore!

brief comment i wanted to make, but this was the year i finally took control of my mental health and went to go see someone about it so congratulations to me for finally breaking down the wall of "im fine" and allowing myself to admit that i could use some help. that aside, lets get into it! beware, possible spoilers

MOVIES

1. Nope (dir. Jordan Peele) - this movie surprised me so much and reflects a LOT of my views on performative/spectacle-like behavior in front of the Camera and the effects things like hollywood or social media could potentially have on people...not going to get into that but i just liked the movie alot okay

2. X (dir. Ti West) - love me some camp. love mia goth. i also really liked Pearl and cannot WAIT for MaXXXine, i am so ready

3. Cruel Intentions (dir. Roger Kumble) - i dont think 2022 was the first year i watched Cruel Intentions but everytime i watch it, it feels like something brand new...i am so compelled to read the book that its based on like seriously

4. Turning Red (dir. Domee Shi) - this is the only Disney movie that exists to me...the mother-daughter relationship portrayed here is just so personal

5. Kiki’s Delivery Service (dir. Hayao Miyazaki) - yeah im extremely late to watching this lol. i watched literally every other ghibli film growing up but somehow, in some way, skipped over Kiki. so i watched it over the summer as an adult and needless to say...yeah i missed out as a kid asjashd

6. American Psycho (dir. Mary Harron) - this is the funniest film ive seen this whole year. im not even kidding

TV SHOWS

1. Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul - never thought id enjoy a show about a middle-aged white male turning to meth production to make ends meet and becoming the most annoying character ever created, but here we are. loved it, and literally EVERYONE around walt deserved so much better (jesse, gus, johnny/saul, mike, skylar, marie, hank)

2. Ranma 1/2 - ive taken a break from watching new anime this year and started diving into older ones. i love ranma simply bc its a bit ahead of its time and is just so easy to digest. just a fun little show!!! a great way to take my mind off of shit

3. The Sandman - just found out recently that this was a DC comic so congrats to DC for successfully infiltrating my anti-superhero visual barrier LOL. anyways i am in dire NEED of the next season

4. You - PENN BADGLEY. thats all im going to say. im a huge fan of Gossip Girl (2007) and as soon as i saw him playing the lead character i RAN to watch the first season when it dropped. was not disappointed

5. The Witcher - ive never played the game lol but the show is so good...im not a fan of GoT (and therefore will never watch HotD) so this show p much fills the dark fantasy void for me

6. Bridgerton - im so glad i got over my weird distaste and finally gave this show a try...i see the hype, i see it!! and the show itself is so beautiful to look at, despite being historically innacurate or whatever

7. Gossip Girl (2007) - ive watched and rewatched this show a grand total of maybe like....20 times in my life total. rewatched it again this year. all six seasons. it never gets old despite being the most ridiculous insipid shit ever. im also currently watching the new version, and while i love the cast and maybe the soundtrack, it doesnt match up to the campy and fun vibe that the first one had. it takes itself way too seriously and the plot is almost nonexistent lol

but anyway, lets move on to music!! im skipping over books bc i have currently finished NONE from the book haul i had back in october.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, like the original series, is full of glorious romances, friendships, and a perfect collection of string covers that we’re never going to get enough of. From Beyoncé to Alicia Keys and the transcendent icon Whitney Houston, the Queen Charlotte covers album gorgeously celebrates and honors some of the most sensational Black artists of our time.

The series’ deliberate focus on the titular character and her history brings intentional storytelling to the forefront, allowing the album to thus beautifully thread her story with raw emotions. Queen Charlotte is a romance, yes, but it’s, first and foremost, an ode to the woman whose role in the franchise makes the story more complete. She might not be a part of the original book series, but there’s no denying that Golda Rosheuvel and India Amarteifio bring something instrumental to the story now. Thus, the soundtrack works wondrously to celebrate the queen’s story, making her the centerfold for much of the country’s fictional success.

No actually Tomorrow had a happy ending!
