the way #hsmtmts is my top tag on here by such a huge margin with almost triple the number of posts as the next highest tag makes me so emo because this show was such a core part of my adolescence you don't understand. i remember freaking out over the trailer because it looked so good as a hsm fan freshly in high school (and a gleek oops) i remember simping over gina from day fucking one (some things never change and i literally mean never that's been such a constant lol) i remember freaking out over carlos ("HE IS SO MEEEEEEEEEEE") and watching every episode as it came out on fmovies i remember girls with dietary restrictions i remember olivia blowing up and the driver's license drama i remember good 4 u releasing with season 2 and sour coming out on the literal same day as the second episode of season 2 and that album defining my summer and getting diagnosed and on meds and finally becoming somewhat mentally stable!!! i remember being a diehard gini shipper i remember all the jokes and niche fandom references i remember when we used to joke about ej's name being elton john before it ever became canon this show literally started in my first year of high school and ended right after my senior year i remember watching literally every episode as it came out between twelve hours of coaching classes after looking forward to it all week and when my best friend and i would do matching pfps from each new episode and how she converted me into a caswen truther i remember the aro kourtney theorizing because her last name was revealed the same episode she was wearing a meh shirt for valentines day i remember how cute she was with howie only for that to go literally nowhere i remember crying at fucking let it go because she slayed absolute fucking cunt and after watching her blossom into THAT. i remember the FEELS at nini's goodbye and hating on rini for two seasons straight and still getting emo over their breakup despite rooting for it all season i remember being in the trenches of the rini-rina-portwell war i remember saying id kill the writers for making portwell romantic and then shipping it with my life when it happened and the disappointment at how dirty they were done i remember hating rina for two seasons straight and then shipping them too after everything i remember hating richard bowen for three years straight but he is my child now what can i say he grew on me like a fungus. this show frustrated me so much but they will always be my comfort gay theatre kids and this will always be my show and i have so much emotional nostalgia attached to it and i miss it:')

i'm going to go on a big season three bisexual rant because there are no thoughts in here apart from some gremlins chanting "bi bi bi bi"

very happy for redlyn being bi4bi, it's pretty rare to have on bi character, let alone two, let alone in a relationship

i really appreciate that it's a disney+ show aimed at a younger audience giving this representation. despite my thoughts on disney as a Company, at least there are creators within it who are like "you know what? queer rep."

neither ash nor red (presumably) cheat on each other when figure out their respective identities, and neither of them are really portrayed as promiscuous or super popular characters unlike brittany in glee or whomstever in euphoria. not that this is bad at all to be, and if people see themselves in those characters, then that's of course great!!! but having it in this way made me realise there's never been too much "kid-friendly" bi rep (luz from toh predating this by a couple of years), and i am so happy that we're now getting that

ashlyn being "nO I Just Like Her As A Friend" until the fireworks? iconic sapphic experience

her "I HAVE A BOYFRIEND WHO IS MALE" is kinda an examination into comphet and that experience of. well. i've liked men in the past and this is a girl and it's not exactly identical but it's definitely not a friend thing was really relatable to me

and while it hasn't really been confirmed if she's a secular or religious jew (because unfortunately i don't know enough about judaism, sorry!!), it seems that at least a little part of her was struggling with the intersection between religion and queerness. and again, while that's not a lot of people, there are religious people in the queer community and that representation can be really helpful for people who want the best of both world

also??? lesbian (yes i am assuming madmad are lesbians BUT I COULD BE WRONG) AND bi AND gay men representation???? quality content right here.

that being said, there are some flaws. i didn't love how we didn't get to see her come out to her friends or big red. i get that the latter was an intimate moment, but like so was the rina kiss. she mentioned that her "dating pool has expanded" but it didn't seem like she had told anyone yet, until carlos showed up with a pride pin (king behaviour btw).

it seems like the in-universe show is going to out her??? maybe she ended up putting something in the confessionals but... idk the way it was edited was really confusing to me

actually yeah that's really it. i'm so confused about the timeline and people's coming outs. for example, i assumed that when ricky looked at ashlyn for confirmation and she nodded she already knew, but i've seen other people interpreting that scene as her finding out??? i personally would've liked some things to be spelt out more.

just let her have a one-liner next season like "I'm too hot and bisexual for this" it's not that hard???

while i would like redlyn to stay together, i understand that you can't always get what you want. IF they have an amicable break-up then i think that there are a lot of potential fun scenes there!!!

btw ricky bowen? not straight. no way. elton with his storyline may be harkening back to the og trilogy's "gay coded but...". gina and kourtney could be straight but i don't want them to be. and i would love it if there were some aro/ace/trans/enby representation with any new characters!!!

Queer fantasy with good POC rep: The Gilded Wolves (bi mlm, Haitian, Indian, Filipino, ethnically + religiously Jewish) by Roshani Chokshi, Cemetery Boys (transmasc, gay, Latine) by Aiden Thomas

Fantasy by an author of colour: Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko, These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong, both books I rec'd in the first point, The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna, The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang, Skin of the Sea by Natasha Bowen. I am cringe and have not read some of these yet but IM GETTING TO THEM and theyre supposed to be good

Autistic rep: The Gilded Wolves! Again! Chokshi is allistic and the autistic character is a bit stereotypical, but she is loved & supported for who she is. (It's not said on page but that's bc its historical fantasy that takes place like 60 years before the diagnosis existed--its confirmed in interviews.) Even If We Break, which I rec'd to Bat, also has autistic rep (ownvoices). C.G. Drews' contemporary novel The Boy Who Steals Houses is some of the best autistic rep I've ever read.

Aspec rep: Loveless (aroace + alloace) by Alice Oseman, Little Thieves (demisexual MC and demisexual love interest) by Margaret Owen, Raybearer (asexual biromantic) by Jordan Ifueko, The (Un)Popular Vote by Jasper Sanchez (aroallo + bi ace), Sal & Gabi Break the Universe by Carlos Hernandez--I think? Apparently Sal is confirmed aromantic in book 2, but I haven't read it yet.

Heist stories: the gilded wolves. you want to read the gilded wolves. also: six of crows, the lies of locke lamora sort of, spellhacker, and aces wild (which also has an all ace cast! didnt rec it in the previous post bc i have not read it, but yeah)

disabled author fantasy or sci fi: the entire grishaverse by leigh bardugo (epic fantasy), one for all by lillie lainoff (historical fantasy), lycanthropy and other chronic illnesses by kristen o'niel (urban fantasy/comedy horror). i really really wish i had more recs for this point but to be honest this is something i'm trying to find more of too :')
