Alpina B8 Gran Coupé: between timid M850i and radical M8
A dinner with Andreas Bovensiepen is bound to pass very quickly. God knows, however, if the history of Alpina, which he co-directs with his brother Florian since 2014, is long. Launched by their father Burkard Bovensiepen in 1965, this Buchloe-based tuner works on competition BMWs and takes a close look at a certain 3.0 CSL. He is then interested in series models which quickly become a…

Alpina B7 S Turbo
The Alpina B7 S Turbo had the unique distinction of being the fastest four door production car in the world when it was introduced in November 1981. Interestingly, it was this model’s forebear, the Alpina B7 Turbo, that had been the fastest four door production car in the world until the arrival of its successor.
The Alpina B7 S Turbo had the unique distinction of being the fastest four door production car in the world when it was introduced in November 1981. Interestingly, it was this model’s forebear, the Alpina B7 Turbo, that had been the fastest four door production car in the world until the arrival of its successor. In BMW circles, Alpina is legendary. For the uninitiated, Alpina (Alpina Burkard Bovensiepen GmbH & Co. KG) is an automobile performance company that works exclusively with BMW vehicles.
Unusually, Alpina versions of BMW vehicles are so comprehensively modified that they’re actually classed as an automobile maker not just as a tuning company. Each Alpina car carries an Alpina VIN plate, not a BMW VIN plate.
The Alpina B7 S Turbo was a lightning quick sedan, it could outpace the popular Ferrari 308 GTB and do it with four doors, five seats, plenty of trunk space, and a luxurious interior. The model is rare, just 60 of them were built between November 1981 and May 1982, and today they’re highly sought after.
The top speed of the B7 S Turbo was listed as 261 km/h (162 mph) with a 0-62 mph time of 5.8 seconds, this compares favourably with the Ferrari 308 GTB of the same era which offered a top speed of 157 mph and a 0-62 mph time of 6.2 seconds.
The modifications Alpina made to the BMW 528i (E12) were significant. The 3.5 litre inline six was comprehensively rebuilt with stronger internals to accomodate the boost from a KKK K27 turbocharger. A new AFT ignition system was installed, and it was fitted with a bespoke exhaust. From the factory the B7 S Turbo was capable of 330 bhp and 500 Nm of torque (approximately 368 ft lbs).
The original Getrag gearbox was replaced by a stronger ZF 5-speed capable of handling the significantly increased horsepower and torque.
Outside the engine bay the B7 S Turbo was fitted with front and rear spoilers, the classic Alpina alloy wheels, as well as Alpina badging and decals. Inside the car benefits from bespoke Alpina seats, a signature steering wheel and shifter knob, and three additional gauges in the interior including a boost gauge for that KKK K27 turbocharger.
Suspension and brakes were also addressed, brakes are ventilated discs all-around, and there are Bilstein gas-pressure springs with progressive springs at the front, and Bilstein gas-pressure shock absorbers with height-adjustable progressive springs in the rear.

CEO confirms BMW's tuning arm plan to go bankrupt as quickly as possible
The Electric Viking
Discussed topics: BMW, Alpina's CEO, Alpina , Bimmer Today,  i4 sedan,iX SUV, XB7, Alpina's large V8 SUV, BMW i4, BMW i4 iX3, BMW iX, BMW B3, BMW B5, BMW B8, BMW XB7, BMW XD3, BMW D3 S, XB7 flagship SUV, BYD SUV, Andreas Bovensiepen.
P.S. Such a course of events is very realistic in the near future, given the general short-sightedness of the German political and business elite.  Just look at all the political chaos and disaster left by the promoters and builders of the Nord Stream 2 project in Europe! So, there are no reasons to preserve at any cost loyalty to German legacy auto makers. More efficient and more affordable alternatives (Tesla) are existing in the European as well in other  EV markets globally. Right now, it is good time to apply “realpolitik” to German car industry.

[ad_1] If a BMW is ‘the ultimate driving machine’, then an Alpina is the ultimate ultimate driving machine. The esteemed German tuning house, which specialises in BMWs, is widely regarded as making some of the best performance and luxury cars on the planet. Calling Alpina a ‘tuner’ is selling the firm a bit short, actually. Alpina is deeply integrated into BMW’s operations: their vehicles are assembled on the same production lines as normal BMWs before being sent to Alpina’s factory in Buchloe, Bavaria for finishing touches. Alpina is actually recognised by the German government as a car manufacturer in its own right and therefore it issues its own VINs. Alpina likes to do things a little differently to BMW and its M division, too. Compared to ‘M cars’, Alpinas put more emphasis on luxury, higher torque, and often come to different conclusions about how to achieve power gains. All Alpina models are turbocharged (not all M cars are), and Alpina likes to install its own manumatic transmissions. In short, they’re a bit special; a bit idiosyncratic. They’re a bit of an ‘if you know you know’, real enthusiast car brand – the epitome of cool for people who are really into their cars. But those people are set for a bit of a rude shock. Earlier this month, Alpina announced that they’ve been bought by the BMW Group and that the production of Alpina vehicles at their Buchloe site will wrap up in 2025. The two firms “will continue to cooperate closely in the future, but in a new form and inter alia, with a focus on engineering and development services,” their press release elaborates, and “the spare parts supply and the service offering for BMW ALPINA automobiles of all ages is guaranteed in the long term.”Watch how a hand-crafted Alpina steering wheel is made above. You can read the press release in full here. The phrasing of the release implies that Bovensiepen (Alpina’s new name) will simply be responsible for legacy servicing and will instead work more as a design/engineering bureau for BMW rather than a tuner/manufacturer. “In the coming years, we will showcase new, exciting, dynamic and efficient automobiles. Our order books are as full as ever and several new products and product updates are imminent“, Alpina CEO Andreas Bovensiepen explains. “With our in-depth expertise and know-how, we will continue to bring different but impressive mobility offerings to market… Our manufacturing activities will transform into engineering services over time.” While it’s good to hear that Alpina hasn’t gone bust or anything – and that current Alpina owners will continue to be looked after – it’s not clear from the press release what BMW’s plans with Alpina are exactly. RELATED: ‘Peasant Trim’: The Telltale Sign You Skimped Optioning Your Luxury Car One potential future is we could see Alpina become a sort of trim level/specification for new BMWs, similar to BMW M. A similar thing has happened with other car companies: for example, AMG, which has long been associated with Mercedes-Benz, started off as an independent tuning firm before being bought out and absorbed into Mercedes. The 2022 BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupé. By way of comparison, the B8 makes 4 fewer kW than the BMW M8 Competition, but 50 more Nm of torque. Image: motor1.comAlpina’s press release references how from 2026, BMW wants to introduce more luxury offerings in their range. Perhaps Alpina will become a luxury designation for BMW models, like how Maybach is for Mercedes? All we know is we’ll be very sad to see Alpina disappear entirely. We hope BMW keeps the Alpina vision alive; to continue to make incredibly luxurious, incredibly fast and somewhat understated versions of their already impressive cars. We also hope this doesn’t make Alpina prices on the used market even crazier than they already are (but that’s probably some wishful thinking). It would be great to be able to own a B12 5.7 someday… Read Next Did you enjoy this story? If so, subscribe to our daily newsletter to receive our top tending stories. [ad_2] Source link

The wheels, the stripes, the aero bits - it can only mean #Alpina. From the moment BMW launched the #E36 3-series, there were faster, semi-bespoke Alpina variations right alongside - before BMW’s own E36 M3 there was the 240-hp Alpina B6 2.8/2, a heavily modified 325i. Always rare as you’d expect from semi-bespoke, high-priced specials - each series of E36 Alpina was built in tiny numbers. Through the 1990s there would be five separate versions, from the original 2.8L B3 to the 4.6L V8 B8. - Alpina’s origins lay with founder Burkhard Bovensiepen, who first tuned Fiats and then developed a twin-carb conversion for BMW’s 1500 Neue Klasse in lieu of going into the family typewriter business. His conversion earned BMW’s eye and trust, and Alpina spent most of the 1960s and 1970s tuning and racing BMWs, helping to develop the 3.0CSL. The company became an “official” carmaker in 1983, which took it beyond the realm of most tuning companies. Alpina stopped racing in 1988 to concentrate on road cars, and there were many new products in BMW’s pipeline. - The E36, shaped by Pinky Lai and Boyke Boyer, would bow in early 1991, though the Touring would not arrive until 1994. Actually, in North America, the touring wouldn’t arrive at all - nor did Alpina do much business in North America in the 1990s. 3-Series wagons and “official” U.S. Alpinas wouldn’t happen until the E46 and Z8 era - so any E36 Touring in the U.S. is a private import. Elsewhere, by the time the Touring arrived, Alpina had upgraded the B6 2.8/2 into the B3 3.0. Confusingly, later there was a run of Touring-only B6 2.8s for Japan, as well as a larger B3 3.2 Touring. - The B6 2.8 and B3 3.0 were based on the 325i and the 3.2 on the 328i, and characteristic of all these cars they had considerable changes under the hood - increased displacement. lightweight pistons, reprogrammed engine management systems, freer-breathing exhausts - they were built for speed. Inside they had upgraded seats and trim - they were meant to feel better too. Just over 1,500 of the six-cyl E36s Alpinas were made. Rarest of all was the B8, in which Alpina shoehorned a 4.6L V8 into a heavily modified E36 chassis - just 221 were made. https://www.instagram.com/p/B3Z_JcqFkbl/?igshid=d5uoe8lcxl20

Alpina is a company that knows a thing or two about going fast. After all, it’s been modifying BMWs for speed since 1965. And it’s for that reason that Alpina CEO Andreas Bovensiepen has some serious concerns regarding the possibilities of mandated speed limiters and the demise of Germany’s derestricted autobahns.
