My Interpretive Ethic
Since I began interpreting nature, I’ve found myself continually shaping my personal ethic, drawing from a wide range of beliefs and responsibilities. The resources that this class has brought me each have had their own impact on my opinions and views towards nature interpretation. At its core, my ethic revolves around having a deep respect and reverence for the natural world, recognizing it as a source of inspiration, wisdom, and connection.
One fundamental belief I bring to my practice is the notion of stewardship. I see myself as a student of the environment, entrusted with the responsibility of preserving and protecting it for future generations. This entails not only minimizing my own impact on the natural world but also advocating for sustainable practices and policies that promote conservation and biodiversity. Jacob Rodenburg's analogy of halting a rushing river with a teaspoon illustrates the enormity of our task, given issues like climate change and habitat destruction (2019). Rodenburg emphasizes nurturing a love for nature and guiding children towards acts of regeneration (2019). This highlights our connection to the environment and the need for action, ideas that I hope to impart on my students. Children are the future of our world so we must pass our knowledge and beliefs onto them in hopes that they can help us in our journey toward environmental restoration.
I believe in the power of education and awareness to teach others about environmental stewardship. As a nature interpreter, I see it as my duty to instill a love for nature in others, fostering empathy and understanding toward the life that surrounds us. Through engaging and immersive experiences, I aim to spark curiosity and appreciation for the natural world, inspiring individuals to become advocates for environmental conservation. The convergence between environmental education and science education, as highlighted in recent research, underscores the importance of incorporating interdisciplinary approaches in my interpretation efforts (Arjen et al., 2014). By leveraging citizen science initiatives supported by information and communications technology, I can facilitate meaningful interactions between people and their local environment, encouraging active participation in scientific studies and encouraging a deeper understanding of environmental issues (Wals et al., 2014). This integrative approach not only enhances environmental literacy but also empowers individuals to take informed action toward addressing sustainability challenges on both local and global scales.
In my approach to nature interpretation, I value authenticity and connection. Rather than simply relaying facts and figures, I strive to create meaningful experiences that resonate with people on a personal level. Whether through storytelling, guided walks, or interactive workshops, I aim to evoke a sense of wonder and awe, inviting participants to develop a deeper relationship with nature (Beck et al., 2018, p. 187). I hope to make all of my listeners and students comfortable in their environment and I feel strongly that making individual connections with them would help us get there. To do this, I will consider all learning styles and determine a teaching method that involves each of them. The goal of this is to allow people to succeed at learning and not make them feel like they are being excluded by a teacher who only considers one learning style in their teaching (Beck et al., 2018, p. 110).
Technology is at the forefront of our world and shapes nearly everything we do. While I don’t always appreciate its presence in everything we do, its influence is undeniable. I see the potential for technology to serve as a powerful tool in reconnecting people with the natural world. Along these same lines, I would like to combine art into my interpretation. Art is something that will always contribute largely to my enjoyment and growth in life and I want to be able to share that love with others. Perhaps I can develop an approach to interpretation that involves nature, technology and art, and apply it to my practice. Reconnecting with nature through open-ended artistic processes such as creative writing and collage making is one avenue to explore (van Boeckle, 2015). Arts-based environmental education offers a promising oppourtunity to engage with nature in novel ways (van Boeckle, 2015). Rather than relying solely on established knowledge, arts-based environmental education embraces a process of exploration, facilitating the emergence of multiple meanings (van Boeckle, 2015).
At the same time, I recognize the importance of humility and continuous learning. Nature is vast and complex, and there is always more to discover and understand. As I develop as a nature interpreter, I remain open to new perspectives and insights, humbly acknowledging that my understanding is but a fragment of the greater world. Much like history, interpretation is a life-long journey that is always evolving and changing (Beck et al., 2018, p. 42). History is a topic we touched on in this class that really interested me. History is a fascinating subject that provides us with a glimpse into the past and helps us understand how we got to where we are today. It can also tell us what’s in store for the future and how things change over time. It's important to keep learning about history, just as it's important to keep learning about nature, so that we can continue to grow as individuals.
In essence, my personal ethic as a nature interpreter is rooted in respect, stewardship, education, authenticity, and humility. Guided by these principles, I strive to fulfill my responsibilities with integrity and passion, fostering a deeper connection between people and the natural world, and nurturing a legacy of environmental stewardship for generations to come. For this reason, it’s especially important to approach teaching young minds with as much interest and potential for learning as we do adults. These are the minds of our future and I hope to incorporate them into my future interpreting endeavours! The lessons I have learned in this class will follow me throughout my experiences with nature and guide my learning moving forward. I didn’t even know what ‘nature interpretation’ really was before beginning this course but now I’ve found myself explaining it and the things I’ve learned from it to my friends.
Signing off,

PRACTICE 2: CREATIVE PROJECT DEVELOPMENT
"The Very Pulse of the Machine" - Love, Death & Robots
"The Very Pulse of the Machine" from Love, Death & Robots stands out for its unique artistic style and poetic storyline. This episode is adapted from the first story in Michael Swanwick's collection "Tales of Old Earth," with the book appearing in the episode itself, renamed as "Poems of Old Earth." This not only sets the stage for the plot but also reflects the romantic style of the episode.
Tumblr media
Artistic Style
The episode's art style is heavily influenced by psychedelic art and surrealism. The animation uses vibrant colors and fluid visual effects to create a dream-like perception, matching the astronaut's supernatural experiences on an alien planet. The visuals frequently display scenes filled with electronic and hallucinatory effects, enhancing the immersion of the story and intensifying the audience's connection with the protagonist's inner world. The strong contrast in colors and the use of light and shadow emphasize the eerie and mysterious environment, while the visual style conveys changes in emotions and psychological states. The bold use of colors and innovative layout in the artwork is somewhat reflective of the influence of French comic master Moebius on this episode’s fantastical visual narrative.
Tumblr media
Historical Context:
In 1977, Moebius, Jean Pierre Dionnet, Philippe Druillet, and Bernard Farkas founded the science fiction magazine Heavy Metal, which had a profound impact on sci-fi visual art, pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling, particularly in adult sci-fi and fantasy arts. The magazine is known for its bold graphics and artistic style, often including surreal, post-apocalyptic, and cyberpunk themes. These themes were vividly expressed through the magazine’s illustrations and comics, influencing generations of artists and designers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The creators of Love, Death & Robots, David Fincher and Tim Miller, were inspired to produce the series due to the animated film Heavy Metal, which was based on the Heavy Metal magazine. Both works consist of a series of short films, each with its own storyline and distinct visual style. This format allows creators to explore various styles and narrative techniques across different shorts, from traditional animation to CGI to experimental visual expressions.
Tumblr media
In summary, "The Very Pulse of the Machine" in Love, Death & Robots creatively merges a visually stunning art style with a deeply metaphorical narrative, drawing from a rich tradition of sci-fi visual storytelling inspired by seminal works like Heavy Metal. This legacy continues to influence modern narratives and aesthetics in animation.

Audiovision Blog Post week 5
1. Research (technical, academic, creative practice)
I didn't have much time to work on my project this week as I have had assignments due in other classes.
I have primarily been researching the environment gathering a lot of reference material, with footage and sound recordings from within small tight environments similar to the 'coffin rooms'. This helps me get a better idea of how I want to pan and layer the various diegetic elements within the scenes. The sound effects will be primarily diegetic with the soundtrack being the only proper non-diegetic sound element.
I have also run into a bit of a roadblock being the implementation of sound as this project will be in the form of a 360 degree video. I have begun learning how to implement this through various Youtube tutorials and other forums so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.
I want all the sounds to feel positioned correctly so that the viewer feels more immersed and doesn't feel disconnected from the world. This has led me to decide to record most of my sound directly in my room as the environment will be consistent and similar to that of a coffin house.
2. Reflection
Analysing the sound design for the 1998 film 'A Bug's Life', opened my eyes to a wide range of subtle implementations and storytelling techniques to enhance a film. While listening to the score-only playthrough, it shines a light on the music flow and subtle musical motifs used that are barely even noticeable within the complete final cut version. These small details not only inherently improve the movies pacing but also drive the emotion in the scene.
The various soundtracks and musical elements that are used to differentiate characters and emotions are clearly portrayed and help build a deeper connection between the characters and the audience.
Regarding the sound effects, I really liked the usage of visually comparable metaphors and the characterisation of certain sound effects with real-world similarities. An example is the fleet of fighter planes layered within the sounds of the grasshopper's wings fluttering. I feel that this builds such a rich and compelling sound composition, as it creates a sense of relatability when depicting a smaller-scale world and environment from the perspective of these smaller insects.
In future sound design projects, I really want to explore scale and different ways, as well as try my hand at the world of foley-based sound design using a wide variety of unorthodox items to create compelling sounds. I will definitely be referring back to the breakdown video in the future to better structure my sound layers of score, vocals and effects to get the cleanest and most refined final product.
Another thing I found interesting was the differentiation and contrast between the score and the sound design. The score provided the core emotional depth and energy to the film, with music tying in with the onscreen key moments. Randy Newman uses the small nuances of musicality and composition to illustrate the feeling the audience should be feeling (for example uplifting melodies might underscore scenes of heroism or success, while softer, more melancholic tunes might accompany moments of sadness and despair.
Alongside this, the sound design is focused towards grounding and imitating the small intricacies of the insect world. Heavy use of live foley and insect recordings are scattered within the composition to make the world feel more vibrant and tangible.
both elements ultimately work in harmony to enhance the overall viewing engagement and experience. Something I found interesting was the use of score being used as an emotional or thematic cue to present danger or something about to happen before it actually happens.
youtube
3. Progress
Again like I stated before I did not have a lot of time this week to work on my project so I mainly did some small testing and planning work.
I have started to create a sound map for how I want each section of the video will play out, along with what sound effects will be used. I want to incorporate a wide range of sonic elements and try to use self-made/ recorded components. I have tried recording elements simply through my phone using the 'Voice Memos' app. I will eventually use a proper high-quality mic for the final recordings.
By positioning the mic in a consistent spot in the room I will be able to get a more realistic feel as the video is from the first person perspective. As the character is primarily bedridden, I can do the same in my room and record stereo audio that will already be panned to the correct direction I want the sound to be regarding the video environment.
The small condensed environment portrayed in the video is quite similar to my room allowing me to create a greater layer of authenticity to the sound usage. This will also help me get a good basis on how the atmosphere and white noise will be shaped in combination with the non-diegetic sounds.
I have also been working on the music composition as this I feel will be the most important aspect over the sound effects.

What are some creative examples of E-Learning advertisements?
In today's digital age, E-Learning has become a cornerstone of education, offering flexibility, accessibility, and personalized learning experiences. As more individuals and organizations embrace online education, the need for creative E-Learning advertisements has grown exponentially. In this blog, we'll explore some creative examples of E-Learning advertising campaigns that effectively engage audiences and promote learning opportunities.
Tumblr media
1. The Power of Storytelling:
Using narrative to capture consumers is a notable example of innovative E-Learning advertising. Consider the marketing for a well-known language instruction website. Rather than concentrating only on the attributes of their product, they developed a story that traces the struggles of a young professional learning how to communicate in a foreign nation. The advertising effectively illustrates how e-learning may enable people to overcome language barriers and thrive in a variety of situations through visually striking content and poignant narrative.
2. Interactive Experiences:
Another innovative approach to E-Learning advertisement is the use of interactive experiences. An online coding academy, for instance, launched a campaign that allowed viewers to participate in a virtual coding challenge. By gamifying the learning process and providing hands-on experience, the advertisement not only showcased the academy's curriculum but also demonstrated the practical skills learners could acquire through their platform. This interactive approach not only grabs attention but also immerses the audience in the learning journey.
3. Celebrity Endorsements:
Celebrity endorsements are a common strategy used by e-learning platforms to gain traction and legitimacy. A well-known athlete's endorsement of a fitness app is one noteworthy example. The commercial not only highlights the advantages of the app but also links the brand to the celebrity's ideals and way of life through clever alliances and endorsements. The target audience's confidence and credibility are increased by this linkage, which encourages participation and enrollment in the e-learning programme.
4. Targeted Social Media Campaigns:
In today's digital landscape, social media platforms offer a powerful tool for reaching and engaging with specific audiences. Many E-Learning platforms utilize targeted social media campaigns to promote their courses and programs. For example, a photography school may run ads on Instagram, targeting users interested in photography and creative arts. By tailoring the content to the interests and demographics of the audience, these campaigns can effectively capture attention and drive conversions.
5. User-Generated Content:
User-generated content can be a valuable asset in E-Learning advertising campaigns. Platforms may encourage students and alumni to share their success stories, testimonials, and learning experiences on social media or through dedicated campaigns. By showcasing real-life examples of the impact of their programs, E-Learning ad platforms can build credibility and trust among potential learners. Additionally, user-generated content can help to foster a sense of community and belonging, encouraging others to join the learning journey.
6. Personalized Recommendations:
Customisation is essential in today's marketing environment, and this also applies to E-Learning ads. Platforms can provide tailored suggestions based on users' interests, preferences, and learning objectives by utilising data analytics and algorithms. For example, based on a user's search history, demographics, or prior behaviour, an online learning platform may recommend courses or other resources. E-learning advertisers have the ability to boost engagement and conversion rates by offering recommendations that are both relevant and targeted.
7. Influencer Collaborations:
Working together with content producers and influencers may be a very effective E-Learning advertising approach. Influencers frequently have devoted fan bases who rely on their advice and wisdom. E-learning platforms may expand their reach and attract new students by collaborating with influencers who are relevant to their target audience. For instance, a coding bootcamp may work with well-known tech YouTubers to produce sponsored video emphasising the advantages of studying programming online.
8. Emotional Appeal:
Decision-making is heavily influenced by emotions, and e-learning commercials that appeal to viewers' feelings can be very powerful. For example, a commercial for an online tutoring service that emphasises the transformational potential of education may inspire sentiments of confidence and empowerment.
9. Interactive Webinars and Workshops:
Organising interactive seminars and webinars is a good approach to draw in new students and highlight the benefits of online learning. Platforms can invite viewers to take part in live sessions given by instructors or industry experts by promoting these events through targeted advertising campaigns. These events can increase interest and conversions by giving viewers a taste of the learning process and answering their questions in real time.
Conclusion:
Creative E-Learning advertisements play a crucial role in promoting online education and engaging learners. By harnessing the power of storytelling, interactivity, and strategic partnerships, these campaigns inspire individuals to embark on their learning journey and unlock their full potential. As technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see even more innovative approaches to E-Learning advertising, shaping the future of education in the digital age.

Unlocking the Path to Inspirational Leadership: 5 Strategies to Cultivate Strong Leadership Skills
Leadership is more than just a job title; it's a dynamic blend of skills, qualities, and behaviors that can inspire and guide others toward success. The mark of a truly exceptional leader lies in their ability to motivate and influence their team, creating a collective force capable of achieving remarkable results. Whether you're an aspiring leader or looking to enhance your existing leadership abilities, here are five strategies to help you develop solid and inspirational leadership skills.
Leading by Example
Leading by example is the cornerstone of inspirational leadership. It involves consistently modeling the behaviors, values, and work ethic you expect from your team members. When your actions align with your words, you set a high standard for your team, fostering a culture of accountability and dedication.
To effectively lead by example:
Be punctual: Show respect for your team's time by arriving on time for meetings and deadlines.
Demonstrate integrity: Uphold honesty, ethics, and transparency in your actions and decisions.
Embrace challenges: Approach obstacles with a positive attitude, demonstrating resilience and determination.
Commit to continuous learning: Exhibit dedication to personal and professional growth by seeking knowledge and improvement.
When you embody the qualities you wish to see in your team, you inspire them to follow suit.
Mastering Effective Communication
Effective communication is the bedrock of solid leadership. To inspire your team, you must be adept at articulating your vision, goals, and expectations clearly and persuasively. Equally important is your ability to actively listen, fostering a deeper understanding of your team members' needs and concerns.
To enhance your communication skills:
Practice active listening: Give your undivided attention when others speak, ask clarifying questions, and express empathy.
Embrace clarity and conciseness: Avoid jargon and use plain language to ensure your message is understandable.
Leverage storytelling: Craft engaging stories to illustrate your points and make your messages memorable.
Provide constructive feedback: Offer feedback that is specific, actionable, and focused on growth.
Cultivate open communication: Create an environment where team members feel encouraged to share their ideas and concerns.
Becoming a skilled communicator allows you to inspire trust, build strong relationships, and rally your team around a shared vision.
Cultivating Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage both your own emotions and those of others. Leaders with high EI can connect with their team members on a deeper level, fostering empathy and trust.
To develop emotional intelligence:
Enhance self-awareness: Reflect on your emotions, triggers, and reactions to understand yourself better.
Hone self-regulation: Learn to manage your emotions effectively and avoid impulsive or detrimental actions.
Nurture empathy: Make a concerted effort to comprehend and appreciate your team members' feelings and perspectives.
Master social skills: Strengthen your ability to build relationships, communicate effectively, and resolve conflicts.
By cultivating emotional intelligence, you create a positive and supportive work environment that empowers your team members to thrive.
Setting Clear Goals and Inspiring Purpose
Inspirational leaders set clear goals and infuse their teams with a sense of purpose. When your team comprehends the broader mission and recognizes how their contributions fit into the bigger picture, they become more engaged and motivated.
To set clear goals and inspire purpose:
Define a compelling vision: Paint a vivid picture of the future and explain how it benefits both the organization and individuals.
Break goals into manageable steps: Create achievable milestones that make progress tangible and rewarding.
Foster autonomy: Allow team members to make decisions and contribute their unique skills.
Recognize and celebrate achievements: Acknowledge and reward your team's efforts and accomplishments.
By setting clear goals and inspiring purpose, you create a sense of direction and motivation that propels your team toward success.
Leading with Empowerment and Trust
Inspirational leaders empower their team members and trust them to take ownership of their responsibilities. When team members feel trusted and valued, they are more likely to take initiative, innovate, and excel.
To lead with empowerment and trust:
Delegate responsibility: Provide opportunities for team members to lead projects and make decisions.
Offer autonomy: Allow team members to find their solutions and encourage calculated risks.
Provide support and guidance: Be available to offer assistance and guidance when needed, but refrain from micromanagement.
Trust in your team's expertise: Recognize and leverage the unique skills and knowledge each team member brings to the table.
By leading with empowerment and trust, you create a culture of accountability and nurture a sense of ownership and commitment among your team members.
Continuous journey that requires self-awareness, practice, and unwavering dedication. Leadership isn't solely about your job title; it's about the positive impact you have on those you lead. By leading by example, mastering effective communication, cultivating emotional intelligence, setting clear goals, and leading with empowerment and trust, you can become a leader who not only achieves results but also inspires and motivates others to reach their full potential. Remember that leadership is a journey of growth and development, and these strategies will guide you along that path to become an exceptional and inspirational leader.

BLOG 10: Stories-Briefing, Narrative Theory
I'm about to embark on a nostalgic journey to revisit my childhood favourites, NFS: Most Wanted and Farm Frenzy 2, and analyse them through the lens of narratology and ludology. Throughout this exploration, I will focus on the personal experience, examining the interplay between games, narrative, and environment.
Let's examine the concepts of narratology and ludology in the context of two games: Need for Speed: Most Wanted (NFS: Most Wanted) and Farm Frenzy 2.
Need for Speed: Most Wanted:
youtube
Narratology: In NFS: Most Wanted, I'm engaged in narratological elements that are perfectly blended into the well-crafted story. The game introduces me to a narrative structure in which I, as a player, step into the shoes of an outlaw street racer seeking to rise through the ranks of the Blacklist. Engaging cutscenes, compelling conversation, and complex character interactions all contribute to my overall enjoyment of the story. As I traverse the world of illegal street racing, these narrative aspects act as guiding threads, adding to the overall richness of my rise through the ranks.
Ludology: From a ludological perspective, NFS: Most Wanted immerses me in dynamic gameplay. The focus is on high-speed racing, pursuits, and exploration. Game mechanics, rules, and player interactions shape the thrilling and engaging experience. The essence lies in the excitement derived from the heart-pounding racing encounters in the open-world environment.
Farm Frenzy 2:
youtube
Narratology:
In Farm Frenzy 2, narratology takes a back seat. The levels offer contextual info, but a continuous narrative is absent. The focus is on player decisions, time management, and efficient farm operation, enhancing gameplay enjoyment. The focus is on gameplay rather than a central storyline.
Ludology:
In Farm Frenzy 2, the gameplay steals the spotlight. Players tackle problems using key aspects such as time management and resource allocation while actively caring for animals, planting crops, and processing products. The game's appeal lies in the rewarding experience, testing management skills and farm efficiency.
Games and Narrative: A Continuum or Opposing Elements?
If we look at both examples, we can illustrate the diverse ways in which games integrate narrative and interactivity. Juul (2001) argues that games and stories don't translate directly, asserting an inherent conflict between the interactive present and the narrative past. NFS: Most Wanted challenges this by seamlessly blending narratology and ludology, demonstrating a harmonious coexistence (Juul, 2001). In contrast, Farm Frenzy 2 leans towards ludology, emphasizing gameplay mechanics over a detailed narrative (Juul, 2001). This supports Juul's thesis that continually interactive storytelling may not be practical.
Narrative and Environment
Qin, Rau, and Salvendy (2009) emphasise the importance of game environments, noting that games must create immersive worlds to encourage player engagement. The popularity of NFS: Most Wanted is evidence of this, as the story enhances the virtual environment and raises player engagement and immersion (Qin, Rau, & Salvendy, 2009).
The continuum of games and narrative preferences is underscored by Qin et al. (2009), who argue that the interplay between story and environment shapes the gaming experience. NFS: Most Wanted strikes a balance, whereas Farm Frenzy 2 leans more towards environment-centric ludology.
Let's analyze three path structures in interactive narratives—The Complete Graph, The Network, and The Tree, discussed by Ryan (2003). We'll apply these to the games we explored earlier, NFS: Most Wanted and Farm Frenzy 2.
Need for Speed: Most Wanted
In this game the path structure aligns more closely with a combination of the Network and the Tree structures.
The Network: In NFS: Most Wanted, I explore an open world filled with races and pursuits. The city acts as a network of possibilities, enabling diverse activities. While not every element is directly linked, a network of choices enhances the overall gaming experience.
The Tree: As I progress through the game, I see a tree-like structure, particularly while moving forward through the Blacklist. Beginning with the basic goal of gaining the ranks, each Blacklist member serves as a branching point. Defeating opponents propels me through the tree's branches, leading me to my ultimate goal of becoming the most wanted street racer.
Farm Frenzy 2
As a time management and simulation game with a level-based structure, it aligns more closely with interactive narratives' "Tree" path structure.
The Tree Structure:  Linear Level Progression: level growth is mainly linear, with options accessible inside each level. Successfully completing one level unlocks the next, creating an organised journey similar to going along a tree's branches.
As I progress through each level, I see a branching structure of tasks. Here, I may choose where to focus, whether it's breeding specific animals, farming specific crops, or investing in specific updates. These options provide a set of duties within each level, allowing for a more unique and diverse gameplay experience.
In this exploration, NFS: Most Wanted shows how a flawless relationship between narrative and gameplay is the essence of a great game. Farm Frenzy 2, which focuses on gameplay, challenges this standard, hinting at a variety of gaming preferences. NFS: Most Wanted's expert combination of story and setting highlights the subtle interplay between games, narrative, and environment, resulting in engaging experiences. Examining the interactive narrative structures, NFS: Most Wanted's blend of Network and Tree features provides a variety of options, but Farm Frenzy 2, which uses a linear Tree structure, unfolds a planned progression with a unique gameplay twist.

Common Questions on Using Online Video Platforms for eLearning
Tumblr media
eLearning is basically an educational approach, which involves offering the courses digitally without requiring the conventional setup of physical classrooms. By taking advantage of advanced digital technologies, a learner can study and complete a course remotely. This type of learning approach is also referred to as distance learning or online learning by teachers and students. Continue reading to get answers to some of the most common questions about the use of online video platforms for eLearning.
How Does a Video Learning Platform Help Educators Provide Better Education?
In a physical classroom, the textbooks that teachers use often lack the latest information. It is impossible for anyone to bring the latest version of textbooks each day to the class. Having said that, by using video learning platforms, educators can share the latest information with their students. An end-to-end online video learning platform allows teachers to share key documents with students in an online session. One can also use an interactive video platform for educational purposes based on an asynchronous learning approach. An asynchronous learning platform allows learners to backtrack for revising their courses.
What Are the Latest Innovations in the E-learning Sector?
Online video education platforms use several innovations in the eLearning industry to provide a better learning experience to students. Some of the latest innovations in the eLearning industry are as follows:
Storytelling-Based Approach
Students can easily relate to the learning materials that include real-life stories. For instance, in health-specific training, discussing real-life stories can be an excellent way to provide a detailed description to students. This increases the likelihood for the students to remember concepts for longer, compared to traditional classroom sessions. These days, teachers frequently use storytelling on cloud-based video learning platforms, so that students can easily connect with the course – which also facilitates just-in-time learning.
With an online training courses platform, educators can tell and especially show? an illustrated story to their students. The conclusion of a real story often acts as a key lesson for the latter.
Personalization
An online poll/survey can be conducted to define an eLearning program’s course of action. You can research the students’ preferred learning approach that can be implemented immediately. Innovative and effective online video learning platforms are extremely customizable, often allowing you to change the course of action, based on what your students prefer. Each student enrolled in an online classroom gets a personalized experience via an online video learning platform.
Gamification
In the eLearning arena, gamification is the latest innovation which involves incorporating game-playing elements into education. Game-based environments and simulation are developed to provide a more practical experience for learners. Students can compete among themselves to score better in tests, which also helps ensure a better learning experience. For instance, for an online medical course, experienced professionals can be asked to give advice to their clients on the basis of their medical issues. Ultimately, they can collect points for giving the right advice to their patients.
Microlearning
Microlearning is an approach that breaks complex topics down into short-form, stand-alone bite-sized training chunks that one can view as many times as possible when needed. Owing to the convenience it offers to both the educator and learner, it has now become a popular approach in the corporate world. As a result, many online learning platforms for business today come equipped with this feature.
How Can Personalized Learning Paths Help Learners?
Isn’t it better if learners can choose their learning paths? A reliable video learning platform can help learners do so. They can define their individual goals before beginning a course. A common learning path might not be appropriate for all learners. A video eLearning platform allows students to choose their preferred learning paths.
Students can interact with faculty members to attain their personal goals. This also allows students to decide their pace of learning. Personalized eLearning paths also involve varied activities and exercises that boost the overall learning experience. The main objective is to determine the most suitable strategy for every learner. Students can leverage video illustrations that allow them to learn faster.
How Can Customized Learning Experience Help Learners?
eLearning via a cloud-based video learning platform provides students with a lot of flexibility. Learners can customize the course they are interested in as per their ability to understand and retain information. As a course creator, you can connect with individual users through a query session. In comparison to conventional classrooms, eLearning improves the communication between students and teachers in a much better way. An eLearning platform enables you to get feedback from students and modify the courses as per their preferences.
An online training courses platform allows you to share various kinds of course materials with students, ranging from videos and images to PDFs and eBooks. Students feel more flexible when they can stream eLearning videos anytime according to their schedule. Online video courses also let students backtrack the course materials as and when required. They can watch the same lecture multiple times, which is not possible in a physical classroom setup.
Are E-learning Education Platforms Affordable?
Undoubtedly, eLearning is far more cost-effective than conventional classrooms. Learners can choose a specific topic instead of the entire subject. Students can browse the courses available and select economically. There is no location-specific restriction for accessing eLearning videos and students don't even require investing in special devices to access an online course – all they need is a personal computer or a smartphone. Students can also save dollars on transportation, classroom materials, etc. They can access learning material as many times as they want. Moreover, you can set up your eLearning platform for less money, compared to a physical institution.
To Conclude
Video learning platforms have significantly transformed education, making it more flexible, affordable, and accessible. Education should not be restricted to just physical classrooms. It should be made available to all – which is only possible with eLearning. If you are looking to build video courses and want to distribute or sell them, it is recommended to first determine all your requirements and then choose an end-to-end online video learning platform that fulfills all of them.

Blog Post 7: Signs In Movies
In this blog article, I will try to explain the practical application of semiotics by using a concrete example of cinematic pieces. I will first be uncovering what semiotics are and explaining their importance in the world of digital media.
Tumblr media
In definition, semiotics is the study of signs, symbols, and their meanings in diverse communication systems. It is the study of how signals work to transfer information, establish meaning, and impact human thought. Semiotics originated in linguistics and has broadened its reach to include the auditory, visual, and tactile elements, which resulted in a reliable framework for evaluating a range of cultural and artistic works. According to Berger (2018), the basic unit of semiotics is the sign which is "this unity of word-object, known as a signifier with a corresponding, culturally prescribed content or meaning, known as signified" (Berger, 2018, pp. 3). To illustrate, our minds match the word "dog" or the image of a dog, which are the signifiers in this case, to the original idea of a dog, a domesticated canine, which would be the signified (Berger, 2018). This is the main concept proposed by Ferdinand De Saussure (1916) whose ideas laid the main foundations for the world of semiotics.
Departing from these traditional perspectives, how does semiotics come into play when talking about movies? And how can we make use of this study to better understand pieces of media?
In short, signs and semiotics play an important role in defining a person's experience and knowledge of the virtual environment they explore. A movie may be thought of as a semiotic system in which every aspect, from characters and environments to visual symbols and sounds, serves as a sign transmitting meaning. The study of signs in both movies and games allows us the general public, as well as analysts, to assimilate the complex language of narration and storytelling. In the same context, we are able to decode the narrative's layers, comprehend character dynamics, and traverse stories with a greater knowledge of the complex array of meanings that are being conveyed. The world of signs is especially important in films, as audio-visual signals help evoke certain meanings or concepts. A red rose in a scene, for example, may serve as a symbolic signifier expressing romance, love or tenderness. This demonstrates how signs usually exhibit the arbitrary and culturally agreed-upon meanings set by society itself. This means that the relationship between the signifier and signified is usually not inherently connected. Instead, the connection between the two is established by social convention and cultural agreement (De Saussure, 1959). The same can be applied when discussing choices of colour tones, camera angles, and musical themes contributing to a film's semiotic language.
Semiotics in the movie: Upside Down
Tumblr media
Upside Down (2012) is a science fiction romance film by Juan Solanas. The story takes place in a universe with twin planets that have opposing gravities. One world is prosperous and privileged, whereas the other is disadvantaged and oppressed. The plot revolves around Adam, a man from the lower world, and Eden, a lady from the higher world, and their forbidden love story. Although it hasn't received the best reactions in terms of storytelling, the film succeeded in addressing many societal topics like issues of class inequity. Through the main duality of the world, the plot exposes major ideas of social and economic divides that can be seen in the world today. In this framework, semiotics can help us dissect the messages or signs hidden within the context of this movie.
The usage of signs in Upside Down can be analysed through Roland Barthes' theory of semiotics. Barthes (1964) pushed De Saussure's ideas further by suggesting a relationship expressed by two notions: denotation and connotation. In his writing of Elements of Semiology, the French philosopher and semiotician made a distinction between "denotation", the basic apparent image portrayed by a sign, and "connotation", the deeper and hidden cultural, social, or symbolic understanding associated with a sign (Barthes, 1986). We see this for example in the film where gravity is more than just a mere physical force. It is a metaphor for societal constraints, creating segregation within the inhabitants of the universe by keeping people in their world of origin. This struggle for equality in many ways reminds me of the harsh immigration policies mainly set by Western governments to prevent people in third-world countries from moving to the "West". It can also be compared to extreme border control laws and decisions like the ones implemented in the USA to stop foreigners from entering the states from the south. In the movie, the worlds are separated by the atmosphere and are only physically connected by a tall building, the "Trans-world" company headquarters where crossings are heavily controlled. This representation (denotation) in the fictional world is a reflection and a clear sign of major corporate greed in the real world (connotation). The corporation that controls the opposite lands is highly exploitative of the world down below and its human and natural resources. This theme speaks loud to the dangers of unchecked capitalism in our contemporary age and how it affects real-life concerns.
Another way the movie highlights the differences between both worlds is through the use of colours. Different colour schemes are utilised when switching between scenes of each of the two planets, which helps viewers understand the socio-economic disparities between the two worlds. Moreover, some mythical elements were used in the writing of the movie in order to reinforce the element of desire in the relationship of the main characters. To begin with, the plot has a heavy influence from the story of original sin derived from the Book of Genesis: the main character is called Adam similarly to the first human created by God, and his lover is called Eden. Just like in the Bible where Adam was banished from the Garden of Eden after experiencing its beauty, in the film Adam is also separated from his lover Eden after experiencing her love and charm. According to the biblical text, the original couple is forbidden from eating the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil but decides to disobey God’s orders and suffer the consequences. In the movie, there is a reference to the forbidden fruit, love, which is forbidden for people from opposite planets as any contact is not allowed. The main characters give into their feelings regardless and get separated in return. This echoes the theme of temptation and consequences where the main characters decide to keep seeing each other despite the societal norms and rules that prohibit their union, and experience pain as a result. This choice of symbolism in the movie connects the story to the broader human experience which makes it more universal and believable.
All in all, the aspects that are discussed in this blog highlight the capacity of semiotics to create a bridge between the digital and physical realms, offering a reflection of life with emphasised elements of focus. Both film directors and writers make use of storytelling and compositing techniques to transform their moving art from simple stories to artefacts with powers of symbolism. These can act as tools impacting human perception, hence, comes the role of semiotics in analysing and decoding the signs, thus adding depth to the film.

Similarities and Differences in Primary and Titicut Follies
By: Julia Kusmenko
Among all genres of film, documentaries are unique in their ability to bring certain realities to life and inform the audience. From watching the 1967 film called Titicut Follies and the 1960 film Primary, these documentaries are comparable for various reasons.
For one, both films lack any interviews—an element that is typical of modern-day documentaries. In addition, both films show a candid depiction of the topics they portray. For instance, Robert Drew’s film Primary gives an inside look into the campaigns of both John F. Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey as they unfolded in the 1960 Wisconsin primary election. With this, Frederick Wiseman’s film Titicut Follies is a raw look at the poor treatment of inmates at a psychiatric hospital in 1967. Another comparison between the films is that they both show an up-close look of two environments, the politician’s inner circle and a mental hospital, that is otherwise kept hidden. To illustrate this idea, it is said by Drew Associates that “revealing the personalities and politics of the campaign trail as they had never been seen before, ‘Primary’ offers a compelling glimpse into the early career of one of the world’s most captivating leaders.” In other words, Primary and Titicut Follies allow the public into a world they usually do not get to see.
One difference between these films is that Primary uses minimal narration to explain the events of the election in chronological order, while Titicut Follies lacks narration entirely. Additionally, Primary is told through a more positive, uplifting lens while Titicut Follies does not spare the audience from seeing disturbing and upsetting imagery pertaining to the inmates.
Titicut Follies reflects a faith in social institutions since it demonstrates how psychiatric hospitals are inhumane in their practices. As a result, the audience receives negative messages towards such mental illness institutions. For example, in the image of a man named Jim curled against a wall, the audience sees a man being bullied by hospital staff who ask him to answer a question over and over and over again. Moreover, a quote said by an inmate named Vladimir who complains about his treatment is as follows: “This place is disturbing me, it’s harming me. I’m losing weight. Everything that’s happening to me is bad. And all I get, all I get, is why don’t you wait, why don’t you take medication? Medication is disagreeable to me” (Keith and Wiseman 43). Other instances of poor treatment include force feeding of a man who refused to eat, the enforcement that inmates be nude almost always, and the barren cells that inmates are put in as living quarters. That being said, Titicut Follies avoids a lack of faith through its compelling storytelling and the raw emotion it conveys through intimate shots of the inmates and hospital staff which make the audience sympathize with their situation.
In contrast, Primary strengthens the audience’s faith in the electoral system since it shows the entire process in a positive light, from Hubert Humphrey vowing for the rights of small-town farmers and John F. Kennedy having personable conversations with young kids. As said by Jeffrey Geiger in the book American Documentary Film, “In Primary we see the stellar JFK addressing an adoring crowd, watched over by a fastidious, somewhat shy Jackie, while Hubert Humphrey is serenaded by a band of children playing ‘Davy Crocket’ on accordions, then tucks into a humble dinner of ‘ham, mashed potatoes, and string beans’” (Geiger 169). In this way, Primary avoids a lack of faith since it shows the politicians serving the people when speaking to crowds and as humble when conversing with their staff behind the scenes.
Overall, while both documentaries cover disparate topics, they are able to shed light on significant institutions within the United States.

Project 2 process--Piratic man 'R'
Inspiration
The experience of buying pirated discs in Shanghai's Chenhuang Temple as a child was fun, and I was exposed to a wider range of films and musical art as a result. But as I grew into adulthood and became more aware of copyright, I looked back on the experience with ambivalence about piracy. This prompted me to start researching the historical and practical context around me and to explore the possible future of piracy.
Tumblr media
Mapping
The mapping below recorded Chenghuang Temple's current state of piracy trade and its surroundings. Chenghuang Temple Market, the largest pirate market in Shanghai, contains both Chinese traditional architecture and modern facilities, which look like a collage space. It is easy to notice that the amount of boring and similar signboards and commodities breaks the beauty of traditional architecture. Chaotic noise is everywhere in the surrounding place.
Tumblr media
Development
Storytelling and visualisation
Inspired by Chris Ware and Longhua ( illustrator of The Blind Men and the Elephant), I added more playability and exploration in the story. After many attempts and tests, the story combines ideas from Plan 1 and builds four eras based on the real background of Chenghuang Area, with the pirate superhero R as the core of the whole story, experiencing from making pirated copies for human beings to the awakening of self-consciousness to create an open source world with human beings in the four eras. The macro-expression of combines fisheye perspective and the micro-expression of R as the main story depict the impact and transformation of piracy on the society in the four different eras.
Scene and background Research
Referred to Chenghuang area architectures from the 1980s and 2000s photos collected from my relatives and online resources.
Tumblr media
Composition Development
Initially focused the scene on a specific street scene but found that this way of presentation could not clearly show the main idea of the story. So I referred to the fisheye effect and found that the exaggerated composition can highlight the key points well, and the fisheye effect is more like seeing the world from the eyes of the protagonist R.

Working process
World 1980
The world was highly polarized, art and knowledge were monopolized by the elite, while ordinary people were extremely lacked creativity. People created the robot R out of boredom. R became friends with people and wanted to do something for them.
Tumblr media
World 2000
R used its ability to pirate the resources of the elite to bring them to people, and the world began to flourish and grow to a seemingly balanced stage. People followed trends and pirated everything popular.
Tumblr media
World 2050
R created a large number of new pirate robots and made a large amount of pirated copies, the pirated items started to make the city look unsightly, and the creators lost their passion for creating and no more new ideas come out of the woodwork. People began to boycott R and the other machines, and R decided to shut itself down.
Tumblr media
World XXXX
R woke up in a utopian world where resources were shared, originality was protected, art and knowledge were no longer monopolized by the rich, and everyone had the opportunity to create. R and a few others worked together to create songs using an open-source system.
