The forty-sixth free, unedited chapter of my upcoming book, “The Heist at Cordia Aquarium” is now available on its website (or click here to read from the beginning).
I’m plain exhausted. It’d be nice to spend all day writing and editing and drafting, but The Energy. It eludes me. Or work steals it all.
Avery's consciousness zips back to the world through a dizzying swamp. A journey of swirling thoughts, fluttering eyelids, and an inexplicably dry mouth. It's gross. Like she's got a shriveled up sponge for a tongue. In a few moments, most of the discomfort passes and the world materializes around her: the subtle scent of lavender and lemongrass; rays of early sunset that tint the world red; a steady, eerie creak.
Comfortable, warm, and haunting. Waking up around this time has always felt like that. Felt weird. The creaking doesn't help.
What happened? Where am I?
Her fluttering eyes shoot open and she props herself up. A plush, violet couch supports her now-awake self, herbs creep up from multicolored pots, and Valerie swivels in an office chair behind a mahogany desk. Avery goes to speak, but the words catch in her throat at a rush of memories. The school trip, the girl who lost control, overexerting herself.
Did I pass out?

The Crow Road
I did in fact read The Crow Road because of Good Omens and it was very meandering with a lot of character study. For a thing summarized as "trying to solve a mystery from papers left behind" it was very uninterested in doing so. It didn't even introduce them for first 100 pages, then didn't refer to them for another 100, then LOST THEM ON THE TRAIN. The book itself is mostly a distraction from solving actual mystery. In no way would I classify this as being Mystery, as in the genre. This is a family saga/coming of age thing. I did enjoy it, but if you're expecting a genre fiction thing, you will hate it.
ANYWAY.
Then we get to the last 20 pages or so of the book and OH MY FUCKING GOD
the rest of this is going under a cut for anyone who actually wants to read The Crow Road themself, but for everyone else, this is directly relevant to the end of season 2, episode 6 AND is NSFW
Toward end of book, MC Prentice figures out "oh, maybe I am actually in love with my best friend, Ash, I should tell here". Oh shit, she's taking a job and moving to Canada! FUCK. Well telling her now is not gonna do anything good here, I blew it.
Ash meanwhile comes to stay with him in his rented place before having to fly out in the morning. The place is tied up in an estate dispute. It has an enormous four poster bed in a room covered in naked paintings of Venus. And mirrors. Pointed at the bed.
They go out for dinner and have a conversation of who owes who for dinner and decide its neither. They walk around a little bit reminiscing about when they were in school. Prentice had once broken her nose with a snowball and thought she didn't know. She says she forgave him right away. It also turns out she knew he was using morse code to tap out rude things at their French teacher.
They get back to the house and she says she's going to turn in early. Goes to give him a kiss on cheek. WHich then turns into kissing. and grabbing ass. They head to the bedroom of Fucking to do just that.
have a couple round and then while tangled up doing effectively some cockwarming, Ash does a little rhymic squeezing via morse code to spell out I-L-U and he does some cock moving to spell out I-L-U-T she still gets up in morning to leave, tehre's that brief, but what if I convince you to stay??? and they basically both agree "no, this is a breakup for work." Ash goes off to do her work contract, Prentice is going to finish his degree and sell the Bentley he just inherited. The split is not forever.
I did not have love confession via morse code while fucking on my bingo card AT ALL.
But good god, that ending there and the kiss there at the end of season2. OH RIGHT, THEY BOTH HAVE DONE SPY STUFF!!! What the fuck are Aziraphale's hands doing? are they frenching with morse code? IF THAT IS WHAT HAPPENED AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Toshiro is kind of an asshole, but it's hard to call him that because what makes him an asshole is being so painfully conflict averse that it causes problems. We ALL know someone like that! The person who simmers on something that made them upset 4 months ago because they don't know how to air grievances. The person who makes up ultimatums in their head without telling anyone. Shuro would think it's too aggressive to block someone on Facebook. He'd get bullied out of line at the grocery store. He'd double book himself on his birthday because he doesn't know how to tell people no. Shuro is so averse to initiating any form of conflict at all that he'd inadvertently cause a fight on a road trip by being too nervous to just pick a fast food joint to piss in

what i love about the Famous Actor Natori Shuuichi of it all is that...it's not just that he's famous and therefore widely recognizable wherever he goes. like yes that is very funny because he was an exorcist before he became a famous actor, which means he CHOSE, on purpose, a day job that would make it harder to hide his double life/secret identity from the hordes of his adoring public, but it's more than that. it's not just that he's famous, it's that he's famous specifically for being an ACTOR, aka a person whose job it is to dissimulate, to make believe, to inhabit roles and emotions other than his own. like he decided he was going to become as visible as possible (which again was literally not necessary! he could have gone into any other career for his day job!!) but in such a way that everyone would see him but no one would see him - they would just see his various made-up personas, including the Famous Actor Natori Shuuichi persona. i can't decide if he's a genius or if he just made so many absurd decisions that they canceled each other out and circled back around to working out. he's either playing 9-dimensional chess or he's eating the pieces. too soon to say.
#the other thing i love about it is that in a very real sense it's his actor day job that is his alter ego#being an exorcist is his normie job. he's just a famous celebrity on the side#which isn't that uncommon in secret identity setups but it's still very funny#natsume's book of friends#natsume yuujinchou#natori shuuichi#natsuyuu meta#my posts#f#i think probably the actual answer is that acting was a very natural career choice because he already masks so extensively#both to hide that he can see things other people can't (and that youkai exist and that he exorcises them)#and to hide what he's really feeling so that no one can use it against him#so if it's already something he has to do & he's good at it...why not have someone tell him exactly how to do it & get paid for it?#and the other part of the answer is that most ppl don't go into acting assuming they'll get famous. the fame was a side effect#so each decision as it was being made probably made perfect sense. but put them all together#and you have this hilarious assortment of elements that seem to directly contradict each other#okay also i would be remiss if i didn't mention the other possible answer which is that the attention came first and was unavoidable#and the acting developed from the need to protect himself from the attention that he was going to be attracting no matter what he did#because he's so beautiful. and (in the exorcist world specifically) because he's the last of the natori#the more i talk about it the more i'm like no becoming a famous actor was the only path that made any sense for him lol#1) he's gonna be watched no matter what bc he's him -> gotta figure out how to hide his secrets -> learn to act as self-defense#or 2) he's got secrets -> he's gotten a lot of practice hiding them -> hey you could make a career out of this!#all roads lead to actor natori shuuichi. and since he's beautiful...all roads lead to FAMOUS actor natori shuuichi#i love it when i ramble so much in the tags that i end up contradicting my own post lol#he's neither thinking ten steps ahead nor is he irrational. he's simply making sensible individual decisions#that follow logically from what is available to him and what his priorities are

I love the InCryptid series by Seanan McGuire, I love these books so much, but I never see anyone talk about them (at least on Tumblr, barely any fanfic on AO3 also)
It's Urban fantasy, fairly kitchen sink, about a family of Monster Hunters turned Monster Conservationists (Cryptozoologists, Cryptobotannists, Crypto Social Workers), it's got fun world-building, it's Chocked full of found family, so much found family, and Y'all should read them
so if that sounds like fun, or you like Urban Fantasy, or you like Seanans other works (October Daye, Wayward Childen, etc) please give them a look

I NEED the Vanitas redemption arc Nomura. I need Vanitas wanting to distance himself from being associated with the 13 pure Darknesses. I need Vanitas finding an identity of his own after watching Roxas and Xion and Namine. I need Ventus or Sora protecting Vanitas from the lost masters/mom because he's one of the darknesses despite the fact that he doesn't want to be. Please?

Seeing the crit of the pjo show makes me a little glad that I haven't watched it but I do know eventually I want to give it a chance. What mainly worries me is the pacing tbh and some of the important details that Rick claimed "doesn't matter" like them missing the summer solstice deadline. No hate AT ALL to the actors just everything on the technical side is what's causing me and other people to side eye the series

you know what concept I love? Tragedy that didn’t have to end like this, because of something tiny and innocuous. Like. Sure this terrible thing was going to happen regardless but THIS character got on a different bus that night and otherwise they would have been fine. Worse when it was supposed to be something silly or fun.
In real life this concept guts me, even for small things, like it was a glorious day but one little thing made it bad and all that lost potential is so tragic.
Also I like to torture characters

I heard that my dear Lu-est of Lus @swinging-stars-from-satellites wanted some poetry about the grief of growing older and dealing with the unbearable changing of time, so I made a little anthology/collection for that purpose! Links below for anyone else who might need some poet's comfort:
At Your Age, I Wore A Darkness, by Maggie Smith
Let This Darkness Be a Bell Tower, Rainer Maria Rilke
Everyday Life, by Olav. H. Hauge
The Letter, by Linda Gregg
Most Days I Want to Live, by Gabrielle Calvocoressi
Heavy, by Mary Oliver
Grief, by Louise Erdrich
Untitled, by Xin Qiji
The Thing Is, by Ellen Bass
October, An Elegy, by Sue Goyette
The Waking, by Theodore Roethke
One Art, by Elizabeth Bishop (Gracie's poem! <3)
What the Living Do, by Marie Howe
and because at times I process things best using my own work, four of my own: The Grief of Growing Older, Answer, Room, and The Loss of One's Wings.

the time has come, the SD part 1 of my Rodrigues book review is now live! (HD version is processing and will be available once it's complete). so far the book is confusing and pointless and horrible and (accidentally) funny and just everything I had expected it to be.
this is my first youtube video EVER so be nice and expect it to be a lil clunky 😂. I know I've whined about it on here before but for this particular vid I did over 3+ hours of recording and the the first 10 mins especially are a Frankenstein of those takes but if you know me and are familiar w/ my blog and the Rods you can skip those anyway.
anyway pls check out the description for time stamps and such (chapters haven't popped up yet either?) hopefully the video made it to youtube in one piece, I haven't watched it all on there yet. I'll begin work on part 2 when I get back from my trip and hopefully it'll be a way short and smoother process (and a shorter video lol) thanks y'all ❤️
Edit: Oh yea obligatory mention that my hair is crazy and my makeup is smudged because of all of the above lmao. I know that's dumb to point out but I don't even like going to the store with my wings that smudged but it was LATE y'all.

The fifty-sixth free, unedited chapter of my upcoming book, “The Heist at Cordia Aquarium” is now available on its website (or click here to read from the beginning).
Shit, shit, shit.
Waylon can feel his heart beat inside his eyeballs; his vision seems to bulge on every thump.
On the second reminder to present their credentials, Ivan slaps the back of Waylon's head. "Don't just stand there! Shut it up!"
It stings: enough to pull him out of his own head. Waylon claps a protective hand over the spot and jerks to his feet. "I'm thinking!" He says, glaring at the solitary, rectangular outline on the panel's display. There has to be a way to stop it. He rubs a hand around the thin crevice where its set into the wall. No bumps, no seams. No hints at where he might be able to wedge open its matte, metal housing. Calm, stay—
It blares another reminder. "Please state your name and place your credentials against the pad. An alarm will sound in ten seconds. Are you struggling to find your credentials? If so, please check these common places: back pants pocket; briefcase; inner coat pocket—"
Waylon presses his palms over his ears. Think, think. Come on! What do they do in the movies?

Another character sheet this week. This time, Frank! We won’t see him for a bit in the free chapter releases, but he’ll pop back up toward the end of the book. As reference I gave Stella a picture of Baloo from The Jungle Book and holy cannoli I love this big bear of a man sitting at his pottery wheel.

Happy STS! What is the best novel you've ever read? What did you like about it, from a storytelling perspective? Has it influenced or informed your own approach?
Hi thanks I've got another ask from you from like two weeks ago that I forgot about whoops
On the jellicoe road has had me in an absolute chokehold since December. It took me a while to get into it because it's a little confusing for the first 100 pages, but my English teacher last year gave it to me because I didn't get a book from the library (it's also worth noting that he gave me a copy that did not have the title on the front, and it was scratched out on the spine, so i did not know what the book was called until i looked it up later)
From a storytelling perspective, it follows two storylines, one is the present, the other is about 20 years into the past, and I'm not going to spoil too much of it, but the parts from the past are written by the protagonist's caretaker, and are in third person, while the present bits are in first. It's definitely worth a reread because of the way the two storylines tie up in the end
I don't think it's really influenced much of my own writing, but I do think that my characterization skills have improved because of it
