Han Mi Was Wrong, And I'm A Hurl Apologist: a rant on Henry the Alchemist's problematicness

To clarify:

Henry: the actor in the play, who used to be Henry Kale but now has his memories replaced.

C!Henry: Henry The Alchemist, the role that Henry the actor plays.

CWs: discussion of slutshaming, homophobia, consent issues

Okay SO.

Let's first outline Han Mis argument, so we can rebuke it. In her call-out of Henry's song, she claims the issue is that c!Henry's defining trait is his sexuality, which turns him into a "beast", and a "monster". He'd be normal if his sexual desires were erased. And on the surface, she's right. Hurl does cause trouble in Henry's life, and is a direct representation of his sexual urges. But let's look a little deeper. Is calling Hurl a monster justified? And is Henry's backstory really homophobic, like c!Han Mi's is racist?

So, how is Hurl monsterous? He is promiscuous, yes, but we don't see any evidence that he's predatory or endangers his partners. All his escapedes appear complety consensual. Based off his lines, he doesn't appear to have a sub-human intelligence, or possess cruelty.

In fact, every single time hes on screen, the first thing he does is help the town. He has superhuman strength, but he's not immortal. Yet he's fought demons, robot spiders and, worst of all, COD gamers. All to save a town that slutshames him in thanks.

The only negative comment about Hurls character, is third hand information: Henry said Hurl would mock Evan until he cried. This would be something Henry would have to be told by Evan, because he doesn't share Hurls memories.

I trust Evan as far as I can throw him. I've ranted about this in discord, if you want me to explain why i think he's a dick and a bastard, lmk. But the long and short of it is, that Henry says he "filled [Evan] with disgust", and that makes me think his "boyfriend" is one giant hypocritical POS. As such, I don't trust his account of Hurls conduct.

So, Hurl isn't immoral. He's actually brave, risking his life again and again. So what if he sleeps around when he's off the clock? Why would Han still label him as problematic?

Now, there is something to be said about how the backstory handles consent, or rather, Henry's lack thereof. I suppose it depends on wheter you see him and Hurl as two completely separate entities, or sharing a body. Does Hurl need Henry's permission to sleep around? I'm not saying he does, I'm not saying he doesn't. This is a tricky situation that imo doesn't have a clear answer.

Another iffy consent issue, is when the town arouses Henry against his wishes, just so he can safe the town again. You could even argue there was unwanted physical touch involved with the "shy college freshman" bit, but it's not clear. What is obvious, is that the town made a collected effort to non-consensually arouse Henry, after which Hurl had sex with a lot of men in town, also against Henry's will.

However, this is not the element that Han has issue with. I simply thought it was worth pointing out.

Now, it would be foolish to deny there are themes of homophobia in Henry's story. From the slutshaming of the town, to his own internalized disgust at what he transforms into. He even mentions elixers he drinks to "renounce, and keep [his] strange libido down". Which sounds an awful lot like chemical castration, or at the very very least a metaphor for deep repression. But i don't agree with Han that these elements make the story problematic. The arc just isn't finished yet.

Because as we've established, Hurl is not an evil figure. He literally saves the day. The only reason Henry wants him gone, is for the reaction from the people around him. (Shame from the townsfolk, disgust from his boyfriend).

Once Henry finds himself in a more positive environment, where he and his personified libido are accepted, his internal struggle won't be necessary.

This is why his joke of "You wouldn't like me when I'm horny" makes me happy to hear. Hurl isn't mister Hyde. He's the Hulk. His sexual urges don't make him a beast or a monster, it makes him a hero. It signifies an acceptance, one that could only arrive from an environment that doesn't shame him.

TLDR: Han was correct in identifying homophobia, or at the very least slutshaming, in Henry's backstory. But I don't think the story justifies that shaming, and it's instead an internalized obstacle for Henry to overcome.

Also Evan is a dickbag and I will gladly elaborate if asked.
