Before settling on using this collaged type on my final compositions, I decided to curate a series of font experiments to see if this really is the best lettering to use on my final outcome. I used Adobe Fonts as a source.

Veneer TwoRegular- I like how this font still manages to convey an imperfect and handmade effect as if created by a letterpress. The sans-serif lettering is legible and informal which is good for reaching my target audience, however it is still arguably too polished to create the zine effect I'm looking for.

P22 Typewriter- This font again does have a handmade effect as it mimics the text created by a typewriter. However, I feel as though it is not bold enough to make the next stand out amongst the crowded imagery.

Adlery Pro Regular- This font does still in a way communicate the handwritten effect, however I think the calligraphic style is too sophisticated for the more grunge-orientated aesthetic that I am aiming to create.

Adlery Pro Blockletter- I then selected another handwritten-effect font to experiment with. Although more successful than the previous experiment, I feel as though again this font isn't quite bold enough to stand out against the imagery.

Battery Park Regular- this stencil-effect font is bold and does compliment the grunge effect of the zines that are inspiring my own work. My only worry is that the distortion of the text may make it harder to read.

Week 4: Considering Typeface Choice

To reflect Kiri Te Kanawa’s refined, traditional personality, I wanted to make elegant, timeless type choices.

I plan to use two typefaces. One calligraphic display typeface, to be used for keywords/slower sections of the speech, the other is a serif typeface for use in bits where the speech is faster.

I’ve been inspired by lettering/calligraphic art, which has a vintage feel and features elegant serif and calligraphic typefaces. This aesthetic feels appropriate to Kiri and her subject (school, opera, her childhood in the 50s).

I notice that lettering art uses a few different complimentary weights/ typefaces in one composition, to convey tone/emphasis. Small caps are often used for non-essential information, while calligraphy is used for keywords. Serif fonts are often used for longer pieces of information.

Below: an example of multiple typefaces in Jessica Hisches work.

Below: Adlery pro, an initial choice for my calligraphic type. I initially chose this typeface because it had a range of weights, making it versatile. Ultimately, I found the blockletter font was too irregular for the look I want to achieve.

Below: Modern Love, the typeface I have decided on. Like adlery pro, this has a range of fonts, but this has a more regular small caps font, which I need. It also has textures fonts, which I will use for the chalkboard sequence of my animation.

Below: An early composition using the typewriter slab serif font ‘Typeka’. I initially planned to use this as well as a serif font, however I found it didn’t pair with the calligraphic font as well as Bodoni. Having three typefaces was also making the animation style too varied, and the typewriter font wasn't featured enough to justify using it. I found that the typewriter type could be replaced with Bodoni without taking away the old-fashioned vibe.

Below: using Bodoni in my compositions. The high contrast strokes, serifs and combination of rounded and sharp strokes are sleeker than the typewriter font and fit with the calligraphic typeface. It is also an Italian typeface, which is fitting considering opera is an Italian theatre form.
