What Is Thanksgiving, And Why Do We Celebrate It Every Year?

Thanksgiving is the national holiday in the United States on Thursday, November 24. It celebrates the harvest coupled with other blessings of the past. Many believe Thanksgiving is modeled on the harvest feast the English colonists of Wampanoag and Plymouth people shared in 1621. This American holiday is associated with many legends and rituals. Apart from these, a conventional Thanksgiving Day meal typically consists of bread stuffing, cranberries, turkey, potatoes, and pumpkin pie.

It is the busiest day for Americans as families get together and enjoy this day with a delicious meal. Thanksgiving officially starts the holiday session beginning. It is confined to the US and celebrated in Brazil, Canada, Germany, Japan, and other countries. It celebrates in the second month of October in Canada.    

History and Significance

Generally, the meaning of this celebration is to convey thanks and recognize the past year's blessings and sacrifices. The annual celebration honors the occasion of the first Thanksgiving feast shared between Wampanoag Indians and Plymouth colonies, Massachusetts; after that, it was known as Pilgrims.  

In 1863, in the 3rd month of October, President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving as a national day to be celebrated on Thursday, November 26.

After that, it followed the holiday proclaimed by every president. However, after a joint resolution, President Franklin D Roosevelt proclaimed that Thanksgiving was celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November.

With time, more urbanization takes place; Thanksgiving Day is marked as the day for people to get together with their near and dear ones for a sumptuous meal. People decorated their homes to align with the right spirit of the festive day. Regardless of religion, many immigrants of every background participate in this festival.

Thanksgiving Celebration  

Turkey, the famous bird, is part and parcel of this celebration. Turkey is included in the festivity meal. Besides, every president of the United States adheres to rituals on Thanksgiving day, and they pardon the bard(Turkey) on the morning of the celebration.  

In addition, the Thanksgiving Day parade celebration and other celebrations take place in New York City. It may be the largest celebration, with massive balloons flying over the sky and marching bands and dancers accompanying it.

Thanksgiving is akin to spending time with the family and, of course, gala time with each other, along with the sumptuous food that makes the occasion even more attractive and engaging.

Thanksgiving in Canada

Even though it is held on a different day, the celebration of Thanksgiving in Canada is almost similar to the United States. Here, the bird Turkey also plays a significant part in the Thanksgiving meal. On this occasion, Canadian Football League generally arranges telecast games nationwide.

Other countries that celebrate Thanksgiving are Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. This festival is slightly different from the United States of America because it gives more importance to religious aspects; rather than usually focusing on a large feast. Apart from religious aspects, one of the most significant elements in this kind of celebration is the building showcasing of food that is frequently used to adorn buildings and churches.

* The first Thanksgiving Day had celebrated in 1621 as a three-day harvest festival. 50 Pilgrims and 90 Wampanoag Indians attended this festival, which lasted three days.

* It is interesting to know that Turkey was not there on the First Thanksgiving day; instead, duck, goose, lobster, and eel were likely things served.

* It said that Harry Truman, then the president of the United States Of America, received a ceremonial turkey from National Turkey Federation, and he got it at dinner.

* John F Kennedy was instrumental in letting go of turkey on Thanksgiving Day. After that, it is a fixed affair on Thanksgiving Day.

* Four United States Of America towns are named "Turkey" in North Carolina, Arizona, Louisiana, and Texas.

* Calories gained on Thanksgiving Day is, on average, 4500

* Butterball answers a whopping 100000 turkey-related cooking questions through the Butterball Hotline each November and December month

* A staggering number of(54 million) Americans are expected to travel on a festive day.
