some other things about the last few episodes we’ve had
1. Charles is autistic. I already said that, but I just sit here like “you don’t understand yes he’s abrasive and unfortunately rich and often a dick, but some of his behaviours are changeable and some deserve to be accommodated” (in the same way Hawkeye’s “waves hands” Stuff is accommodated for... dare I say it... that thing where an autistic and an adhd’er come across one another in the wild and unfortunately have Literally Nothing In Common and so it’s like unstoppable force/immovable object kinda situation)
Anyway, the way he made a mistake. I liked that. I need to think about it more in terms of phrasing, and I’m sure more data will appear as we continue onwards, but I guess the TL;DR is that Charles probably will find his way towards balancing the things that he needs to function, with being able to see beyond his own nose and care for others’ needs beyond the functionality of a patient and his own ego
also him wanting Hawkeye’s attention, even if that attention was negative. Hawkeye genuinely being angry at him for fucking up with the patient. Understanding the limit, and trying to understand it. RIP I will be a Charles apologist (just like I’ll always be a Margaret-from-day-one apologist)
2. Hawkeye loving and losing (and crying). I have nothing deep to say. I thought it was a good episode. I thought Kyung Soon was a great character and I loved that part of what made this work was that she was controlling the narrative, even if Hawkeye was the POV character. You can write believable romance in 25min and make it tragic in a way that isn’t heavy-handed (I’m glad she didn’t die -- and in a way that may have been easier, because you can romanticize death in a way you cannot romanticize making the adult and correct decision that there are more important things). And I love when he cries. Alan Alda clearly loves these things too, because he wrote and directed the episode
bonus for this episode is Hawkeye talking about it... with Margaret! I’m not sure if he’s been this emotionally vulnerable with her before. And she, in turn, is vulnerable with him, because her new husband has probably been cheating on her. Telling ya these two are friend-soulmates (and they’ve been fighting it every step of the way!) (I am not a fan of “soulmates” as a concept, I merely mean they had that potential and rather than move towards it, they decided to hiss at each other for x amount of seasons, while occasionally giving in to the fact that maybe... they actually really like each other)
3. BJ is still partially an enigma to me. They’ve followed up on the idea of him as a prankster in the episode with the guy he studied with (my partner and I clearly brought something to that episode because we were not entertained by his friend at all, and felt quite on edge whenever he was onscreen), and in the way he was messing with Charles’ uniform. his interactions with Hawkeye have a lot of different -- probably more interesting -- textures than at the beginning when they were getting to know one another as well
I mean in the sense that sometimes Hawkeye annoys him, which we first saw in the episode where Hawkeye and he had a fake -- and then a real -- argument. I don’t think it’s intended as that deep (although who knows), or that it will lead to an actual temporary split between them, I just noticed it. He’s moved from the place he was in s4, but again, he doesn’t have so much POV, so I’m still placing him rather cautiously. I’m guessing he won’t become a Trapper 2.0, because otherwise he wouldn’t be so beloved in his own right, so I’m looking at the pieces of him I’ve got at the moment and squinting at how they’ll end up fitting together. I still think “observational” was something right I said, but maybe, currently, not as Solid as he was at the beginning (but that may be because Hawkeye also feels more on-edge... I do tend to read BJ in connection with his relationship with Hawkeye, so I think that’s what I’m not getting as much info on this season as previously...)
I think there’s something interesting there in terms of knowing a character’s place and/or journey, and I feel like BJ is moving with the changing tides more than any other character and I don’t quite see where he’ll end up (yet)

Ask meme BJ?
ohohohohohooooooo
notp: ok im ready to get crucified but aggie/bj i was like bro you JUST went through this. like ok youre ~in love~ because some cool girl showed up and like, made a joke and knows about sports or some shit. like. ok. you’re fucking married you CANT be having this kind of crisis after like three days of knowing a woman??? you LITERALLY ALREADY HAD A STORYLINE ABOUT CHEATING ON YOUR WIFE? FUCKING STOP THAT (i understand narratively the reasons for this and i Get It but in universe its like. bro. its been what a couple fucking weeks since you last cheated on your wife and then grew a mustache and got gay? you cant be doing this again)
brotp: hmm. after watching s9e1 i really think bj and margaret should be fwiends but idk if id say brotp. tbh thinking about this is so crazy bc its making me realise how little bj really properly interacts w anyone outside of hawkeye related storylines. crazy.
otp: sigh. unfortunately beejhawk. HATE that. i dont want bj to be happy but if he HAS to be then. i GUESS hawkeye is like his soulmate or whatever 🙄🙄🙄
second choice: beejpeg!! haha that looks like bee jpeg. picture of a bee. anyway he loves her!! i fully believe bj is gay (fucking look at him) but his love for peggy is real and i think he could easily go back and be married to her and genuinely be Happy!! i mean YES part of him will always be left in korea slash maine slash boston (where hawkeye goes after the war in a non-beejhawk universe duhhh <33) but he can be happy and he loves peg and i think like even in a divorce scenario shes still his BEST FRIEND
fluffy: can i say beejhawk again. im so sorry theyre like insufferable and sweet when they are Being Sweet and it kills me and im like. 🙄 they could very easily be married old men who have a favourite table at the local coffee shop and all the staff know them and are like aw arent they sweet. without knowing actually these men are crazy and evil tbh.
angsty: actually. Can I Say Beejhawk Again. again theyre insufferable but in an evil way and i think like, the mutual i am in love with you but we can never do anything about this thing is soooooo darksided and fucked up and i mean. realistic. which sucks but also >:) yes bj. cry about it. cry about it you stupid fuck.
poly: beejhawktrap duhhhhh :) i know im not a poly person but bj goes to boston is something that can be SO personal and i love the idea of bj getting over his trapper complex by just. sleeping with him. its FINE dont worry about it.
weirdest: the absolutely insane bj/trapper situation within the bj goes to boston situation that unfortunately juice and talls and i came up with i literally... cant even describe it but it was VERY funny and like, crazy actually, so,

BEEJHAWKSID FOR THE SHIP ASK GAME!!!!!
Do I Ship It?
Yes, I Ship It!!
What made you ship it? —Oh god, what DIDN'T make me ship it!! HUGE huge huge OTP for me. I got caught up in sidhawk, as do many people who are comfortable shipping Sidney, but it fascinated me that no one had leaned super hard into sidbeej. In a way, it makes perfect sense—they get almost no time alone on screen together—but that fascinated me ten times more. If BJ is intentionally avoiding being alone with Sidney, doesn't that make it even more compelling to write circumstances where he can't avoid him? And then of course, one thing led to another, as it does, and I couldn't get them out of my head. The idea of Sidney orbiting this pair of very clear soulmates and getting sucked in every time he visits really grabbed me. Eventually, I got an idea in my head of a sidbeej/sidhawk to sidbeejhawk fic series—BJ who has permission to mess around with men while he's away from Peg but who avoids fucking around with Hawkeye because Hawk is too vital to his emotional and mental wellbeing to risk messing that friendship up, so Beej leans on Sidney instead and just happens to find out that he himself has a hell of a lot of complicated emotions about older men, and things getting stickier and stickier every time Sidney comes into town from then on. And now I can't get away from them, and one day I will finally really dig into that series idea (the first fic is linked here).
What are your favorite things about the ship? —BJ and Hawkeye are that couple that I'm like, yes, obviously they're soulmates, we all know it, we all get it, we all love them. But I love introducing a third into the mix that can give them a little more stability, and Sidney is excellent for that to me. A good age gap is catnip to me, and the experience Sidney has both in the medical field and just in life in general lends itself to them, especially a fresh out of residency BJ who is constantly looking to learn and absorb from those around him. Sidney has a calmness about him that can settle Beej and Hawk when they're getting sharp and tight, and on the flip side of that, BJ and Hawk are playful and loose enough to get Sidney to drop his guard and relax far more frequently. And BJ and Hawk have compassionate sides that never shut off, and I know that when they recognize how much of a workaholic Sidney is and how he is constantly wringing himself out for everyone around him, they would step smoothly in and get him to settle, to realize there's more to life than what he can pour into others. Also they're one of the few I self-indulgently love to imagine staying together postwar—BJ, Hawk, and Peg tucked away in Mill Valley, Sidney who comes to visit and eventually realizes he does actually prefer the warm weather, and Sidney who gets to pull a solo polyam life and own his own house and be deeply involved with BJ and Hawk romantically and Peg in a fierce platonic love (in this world, Sidney and Sam Pak also reconnect, but my long and winding polycules aren't important right now).
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? —I think the power imbalance is extremely exciting. I love getting to write about a BJ, Hawk, and Sidney who get deeply intertwined far before Sidney has actually realized that his fellow doctors are just as much his potential patients as all the soldiers in foxholes. It makes it all so much more agonizing when things start to click into place as we know they do.
