loving the glass onion posting but I'm really sick of the 'birdie Jay stops flirting with blanc because wearing sweatpants makes you 'fruity'' or whatever post. because:
a. bit sick of the idea that we're still perpetuating homophobic and toxic masculinity principles in this day and age, at least amongst ourselves. straight people clocking gay men for wearing a 'girly' sweatpant company feels threatening, not really like a cute queer in-joke. especially given the current climate.
b. I don't think birdie Jay WOULD stop flirting with a gay man. I bet she's the kind of woman who likes to put her hands ALL OVER her hot gay friends at the club because 'is fine you're GAY and I'm a WOMAN and it's impossible to sexually harrass a MAN right?'
c. THAT'S NOT THE REASON. she doesn't make sweatpants for her friends to wear. she makes sweatpants to profiteer off the pandemic and lockdown. blanc saying he wears sweetie pants tells her he's not a disruptor. he's not in her class. he's a MARK.
THAT is why he's off the flirting menu.
(Also this is exactly blanc's game. we know he's doing this. he's TRYING to look hokum and naive. he's trying to make them underestimate him and distract from Helen being a fish out of water too. pity this little bit worked on you too.)

If I could ask Rian Johnson one question about Glass Onion, it would be "Which came first: the idea that she sold sweatpants or the line 'did you think a sweatshop was just where they made sweatpants?'"

No, no, no, I am sorry, but Birdie’s ignorance, while it may be funny, is not and should not be mistaken for innocence. She is not one iota less of a shithead than the others. It is not the understandable ignorance of a child; it is the willful ignorance of a grown woman who either chooses not to know any better or is only pretending not to know any better.
You don’t spend a lifetime in the fashion industry without knowing what a sweatshop is (you’d have to deliberately tune out those conversations). You do not spend your adult life in a cosmopolitan society, rubbing elbows with the entertainment industry and actual Black people, without knowing what blackface is (you’d have to deliberately shut down the million people who try to tell you.) You don’t exist in either of those worlds without knowing what anti-Semitism sounds like. It’s no coincidence that the cut to Birdie’s party overlaps Claire’s line about climate change deniers sticking their heads in the sand. The pandemic isn’t the only reality Birdie deliberately chooses to “not understand.”
We’re all familiar with “weaponized incompetence,” where a person either claims to not know how to do a task or refuses to learn how to do it, so that nobody will ask or expect them to. Birdie’s brand of ignorance is the same thing. If you pretend you don’t understand basic concepts, as long as you’ve got enough social capital to carry it off, people will shake their heads and say, “Oh, that’s just Birdie.” We, the audience, are not supposed to do that. We’re not supposed to fall for the BS.

Marta wasn't in Glass Onion because as a nurse she'd have to kick Benoit Blanc's ass for going to a party with a known super spreader during covid

Rewatched glass onion, here's some more things I liked that I picked up on the second time around
- Helen's face as she destroys the box- it's not the calm coolness we see from 'andi' it's grief
- peg's already putting put fires in the box opening scene
- the invitation has an evil eye on it, symbolizing jealousy, ill wishing (which killed andi)
- birdie claims she says what everyone's thinking but doesn't want to say. On the boat, she tells 'andi' (helen) "nobody wants you here," but miles greets andi with a "I'm so glad you came."
- andi could've just taken a picture of the napkin itself as evidence. But she deliberately sent the proof to only the Shitheads, instead of just to the courts. In that scene, a picture of an ourobouros is behind her, symbolizing the cycle of manipulation, blackmail, and games between the rich bitches
- we all get to see what the Shitheads look like while they lie in the court scene (Claire stutters, avoids eye contact, Birdie is too casual, Lionel is too quiet, etc.) And they're all terrible at it. The lot of them really didn't straight up lie at all- the most they did was lie by omission, until it came to flat put deny visual evidence for miles.
- miles gets all squirrely when Benoit asks why his car is 'here,' because he'd just been driving it around on another continent to kill andi and such- so it's not one of a kind, either
- miles makes a dumbass comment to whiskey about the necklace he gave her
- while there certainly is a chekhov's smoking napkin, the random guy, Derol, was actually just a random guy

never going to be over these moments of pure discomfort benoit feels for multiple reasons.
1. its not in the script, (both birdie flirting AND benoit not being okay) so kate and daniel but had to be like “should we make it really obvious” and they’re the greatest and i love them for it.
2. THIS ONE specifically is just… benoit clutching the magazine to his chest… grasping his arms… trying so hard to physically say “please stop i am NOT okay with this”. 10/10 acting daniel craig i love you
3. someone on here said how birdie stops flirting with benoit when he says how he loves sweetie pants but as much as i would love that to be true, she flirts with him again at dinner, (by asking miles if they can work together and benoit FEELS her stare). i’ll never be over my personal headcanon that post-go she googles him and on wikipedia it says “spouse: phillip blanc” and she’s like OHHHHH

Guys. GUYS.
I may have watched Glass Onion one too many times and only now realized that they actually put a full-on Among Us scenario in there with the whole “Light out!” part!
That’s literally what you do to sabotage as an Imposter.
There’s a gun.
Everyone runs around trying to fulfill their little tasks/trying to survive/panicking.
Birdie even has a comically large knife.
AND THEN BLANC DRAGS EVERYONE AWAY FROM THE BODY TO HOLD AN EMERGENCY MEETING.
I’m probably the last one to realize this, but it’s just so visually neat I had to gush for a moment. Foreshadowing (affectionate).

in my most recent rewatch of glass onion, I noticed yet another background moment! people have already mentioned that you can see birdie’s bag shift when helen tosses the recording device in during the first half of the movie, and miles can be seen putting duke’s gun into the ice bucket, both of which I never would’ve noticed if not for this delightful video, but I haven’t seen anyone mention the fact that benoit blanc actually goes over and looks at the statue with the crossbow onscreen in the background before he ruins miles’ murder mystery.
I can’t find a video to get a screenshot right now, but it’s right when they’re all coming to dinner for the first time. birdie and lionel walk in front, but if you look at the background, at the crossbow statue, you can see benoit heading over to inspect it. this detail isn’t really important, but I love the attention to detail, especially since we got to see both the birdie magazine and the pendant miles was wearing onscreen—both instrumental clues for benoit to ruin the game. birdie was also the only one to draw attention to the chakra on her wristband, though you can see that whiskey has the heart chakra and helen/andi has the root, which are incredibly interesting and insightful/fitting decisions, from a writers standpoint as well as miles’ in-universe relationships with these people.
I just really appreciate the amount of thought that clearly went into every little action in this movie. :)
