A few weeks back we managed to track down French elephant producer Big Seuf AKA Pascal Ribon for a quick chat about music and all things elephant related, here’s how it went!
Hey, how’s it all going, thanks for having a quick chat.  Let’s start with the obvious, how did you fall into the world of music production?
Not a problem thanks for having me. I’ve been producing for a while I’d say around 15 years, my brother did music and I wanted to make music too, I started out making Hip Hop first.
So how did the transition to bass music come about?
If I’m honest French Hip Hop is quite shitty, I used to make more UK style Hip Hop and the rappers here didn’t really want that sound and also I just love that UK sound, I listen to a lot of Drum and Bass, Roots Manuva, London Possee etc so it all just stemmed from there.  I just make instrumental music for me now not for the artists taste.
How did you end up listening to so much UK music, what was it about the UK sound that made you think ‘That’s what I want to be making?’
There’s a French radio station called ‘Radio Nova’ and each week Dj Gilbert would do his Drum & Bass show and from there I was like wow this music is sick, I just fell in love with the bass and the drums and stuff.  Also my brother was a big influence he was making a lot of EDM and he was a fan of Autechure and Aphex Twin so we were both into the UK vibe, Detroit was a major influence too.
Cool, that kind of brings me to my next question, who are your main musical influences?
The first would have to be Aphex Twin, for me this man is a genius!  There are so many different styles in his music so he’s definitely a big influence on me ‘I care because you do’ is THE album, also Boards of Canada for the Trip Hop side of things, also Hyperdub records as an entire label is a big influence.  The DVA album is crazy all the Hyperdub releases are excellent and it’s made me want to create this with my style.
How do you feel the Bass music scene affects you and your music?
I don’t know how the French bass music scene is, there a very few events over here but I don’t really go to them. The Rinse Fm winter tour was big here but if I’m honest I’m a bit of a caveman if you know what I mean.  There’s a big following for Dubstep over here but it’s all very heavy Skrillex style and that’s not really my kind of thing.
You’re latest release was the ‘Cuttinvibez Ep’, where did the inspiration come from for it?
Be through with you was inspired by a Von D he was the first person I heard making soulful sounding bass music.
‘Shooting Stars’ is a remix of a Mala track but it’s not too obvious I think.  This was the track on the Ep that probably took the longest, I spent a lot of time working on the bass until I got it how I wanted.
‘Zero To Midnight’ was my own vibe, I really wanted to go for that wobble style and the title track ‘Cuttinvibez’is a response to a French rapper…It’s a long story I originally made a Hip Hop beat under the name Cuttinvibez.
Right so a question that everyone here at Route 1 has been dying to ask, what’s with the elephant head?
Ha ha, I’ve got a mate that’s a photographer, I spoke to him about the Ep and he said to me ’Look your music is very loud and repetitive like an elephant walking, let me take some pictures of you with this mask’ and that’s it lol.
What is your process when it comes to producing?
Usually I start with an idea of the style dark, rude or more danceable. It depends on the mood of the day. I begin with the drums to create an outline, and then I start looking for the sounds I want. I don’t know where I go from there, I work by feeling.
What are your 3 top tips for production?
My tips are not very technical, but I think that these 3 tips are important:
The first one, don’t give up your ideas, when it comes you have to continue creation is like a cycle sometimes it’s not the good time, your mind could be empty and sometimes you’re full of ideas.
In my case it’s very hard to continue a track some weeks after if I haven’t all the patterns, I’ve lost the thread, so I have to continue the work when creation comes.
The second tip is to have a breaks with your tracks. When you have all the patterns, done the first mix, take time, do other things, rest your ears.  Come back few days later with some new ideas of structure, mixing will come
The last one, don’t be afraid to trash your work. For the Cuttinvibez EP I selected 15 tracks for a 4 tracks in the EP and the 11 tracks which aren’t on the EP may never get  issued .
  What’s in the pipe line?
I have to promote the Cuttinvibez EP, so I’m working on promoting that, sending out promo copies to Dj’s. I’m trying to get some dates sorted in France. The most important thing though is a new EP that will arrive for the summer, I can’t give a date yet but it’s soon and in the ambiance of the summer
How can people find out more about you & find your music?
Catch me on Facebook, facebook.com/therealbigseuf to find out all the news about me. For my music check out my Soundcloud account soundcloud.com/bigseuf . You can also find the Cuttinvibz EP on Juno download. Keep an eye out because sometimes I upload new track to check the reception of the audience on my Soundcloud page, just to measure the temperature. lol
Do you have any upcoming gigs in the UK?
No gigs planned in the UK yet, maybe one day in a Route 1 Audio gig ;)
