What differences are there between Oracle magic and the future vision of the Sapphires? And which would you say is the most accurate?
I’m actually not sure if you mean the Oracle magic from the Boiling Isles or the Greek Oracle so I guess you get three answers haha
I think the Isles’ oracle/divination magic is the least accurate - very open to interpretation and highly dependent on the caster’s aptitude towards that particular school. Probably reliable short term, but as the possibilities mount, it’d be like predicting the weather beyond a day or two.
The prophecies of the Greek are interesting in that what they describe will happen, but it’s almost always a fool’s errand to actually try to decipher what it is and how it’ll come about, to say nothing of trying to change the outcome.
A Sapphire’s future vision is like shooting a very narrow beam across a vast ocean of possibilities. It’ll show them a very constrained but accurate view of the future ahead of them, but this perspective counts on the universe working like clockwork - that the laws of physics will continue to apply, that people will keep acting the way they normally do. Any major shift is like a big wave blocking the view and shifting the boat so that they end up with a different perspective altogether.
To continue the analogy, Garnet can see the whole ocean around her, but she’s the eye in a storm of probabilities; her immediate vicinity is very easy to discern, but the farther away from her an event is, the harder it is to make out details or any obstacles that might derail the path towards it. Still she can set a course and navigate as best she can towards it.

Despite all his setup, Belos’ plan to eradicate wild magic is also clearly flawed; Even if pulled off, ambient magic still exists, as do witches who aren’t coven bound! Even if most, even if ALL are kids... They’ll eventually grow up and create new generations. It’d still be a genocide, but hardly the total eradication of magic that one would expect after centuries of buildup and a deal with a cosmic entity of godlike power. Philip really did half-ass the assignment and wasn’t even planning to stick around to see it through! Just play his sick and twisted fantasy game I guess...
That does make me wonder though. If it’s a draining spell designed after the basilisks and even himself... Where does all the magic go?
Tumblr media
We see in this shot that it seems to be focused into the eclipse specifically; But we also know Belos had zero intention of helping the Collector in any way, that’d run contrary to his plans to save humanity if he empowers a dangerous god like that. We know the Collector taught the draining spell to Belos, who ironed out the details studying basilisks; So given his motifs, the Collector could’ve known how an eclipse could be used to drain everyone’s magic.

We’ve seen how celestial objects such as the Wailing Star and even the moon can animate things with their power; Which given the latter’s involvement in the eclipse, I suppose it’s a principle that what magic the moon can give, it can also take away? The Collector’s motif could reflect that his power came from something even greater, given how he ‘came from the stars’, so his knowledge is in knowing how to invoke that power; Having the sun and moon perform a massive draining spell on a level unprecedented.
Again, I have to wonder if that magic was intended to be put to use; If it’d naturally dissipate, or just add to an already enormous amount of power in these celestial objects, of whom the Collector has a clear connection to that he can exploit to move the moon like it’s nothing. If his power comes from the stars, he’d know how to use the stars to help out Belos’ spell...
I also have to wonder if magic would’ve just been intended to simply dissipate into the atmosphere, into the wider fabric of reality that exists? Or was Belos planning an additional level to the plan, that would use the gathered magic to finish off and wipe out those who weren’t covenbound; And S3 might bring it up as a potential solution? Because if the sun and moon still have a lot of absorbed magic, that could be used to stop the Collector...
Tumblr media
Of course, everyone’s magic also likely returned to them, as it had when the Greater Basilisk was defeated, again yet another parallel to Fullmetal Alchemist. It’s likely I’m just overthinking it, but with a recent post discussing what the Day of Unity could’ve originally been about until the Collector seemingly displaced Belos as the final threat... Who knows, maybe the drained magic, set up in 2A, which was written before the show’s trajectory had to change, reflects this? Maybe the drained magic would’ve been used by Belos, to elevate him to that godly level the Collector now narratively holds?
Makes you wonder if Hunter WAS originally intended to play a role, and it was only retconned as a lie due to the show being shortened and thus needing to simplify and streamline things... Or I’m just in denial over disproven theories lol. It could really be as simple as the moon being a powerful ‘battery’ for spells; So Belos just took that a step further and used a full-on eclipse to power the largest draining spell ever seen! I imagine it takes up a little bit of energy for Basilisks to drain magic, as it does for anything to eat; The net gain just FAR outweighs the net loss of the action.
I may just be projecting my personal desires onto the show to misread and skew my interpretations towards a particular direction alas... But that’s the fun of being inspired by speculation as Any Sport in a Storm reiterates, so who cares? Makes me appreciate even more the writers validating theorizing as an effort, correct or otherwise; Esp in 2B, when the show is wrapping up and a lot of answers are about to be given, and thus many theories disproven!

Dana herself said she made connections like that as a kid watching shows, this really is an ND show for ND kids that celebrates this particular type of experience. The effort isn’t for naught, as it clearly motivates people to write their own stories, as we see with Dana making TOH. And I just love the show reiterating that Luz and Amity’s theories are valid whether or not they’re right, and offering a use for them even after being disproven as writing prompts for their own stories! So there’s not just the nostalgia and fun of then, looking back; It can continue to apply and work even after the fact.
