I’m definitely not as smart as everyone talking about this but I haven’t really seen it mentioned: my issue with individual arming is this. If I’m out with my gf and a homophobe pulls a gun on me, and I pull a gun on them, regardless of who “walks away” in the end, who do you think is 1) going to get the cops called on them and 2) going to be treated fairly by the cops? I might survive an initial encounter, but i may not survive the cop encounter, even if I don’t use the gun
Obviously I’m not saying you should roll over and die, but the idea that having a gun magically makes you survive every dangerous encounter you have, and that the encounter ends with no repercussions after you shoot the “bad guy” is a really flawed one, and one I know well bc my abusive exs dad was a cop. And having the cops called on you for retaliation in self defense is a real eye opener, and I’m still dealing with it today, more than 5 years later
Yeah, that's really the main problem - like, take this meme for example:
Tumblr media
What happens after you kill someone on the street? Do you just walk away? What, exactly, happens when a Threatened Minority kills someone on the street? When the cops arrive to the scene of a shooting, with a minority holding a loaded gun, are they going to Approach you with Malicious Intent, too? And what, then? Is your concealed glock going to defeat the systemic oppression of the bourgeois police? And, as with the point I made in my larger post, the people most likely to approach you, as a threatened minority, with malicious intent in the first place, are the police themselves.
You're not going to be able to do anything about that situation, to be clear. Shooting a cop won't somehow reduce the amount of violence you're going to face. If the US cops want to kill you, you're going to die, unless you have an actual organisation that can engage in what amounts to civil war. Fundamentally, revolution is the only actual solution to the problem of violence against oppressed groups.
(This is, again, ignoring the fact that the hypervisibile minority sex worker getting attacked on the street likely cannot afford the monetary and time investment for firearms, equipment, and sufficient training to simply fend for themselves anyway.)
The fundamental point of the use of weapons in a communist sense is for the purposes of, explicitly, waging revolutionary civil war, one necessarily led by a communist vanguard party. The methods by which communist vanguards engage in armament, and by which individual concealed-carriers engage in armament, are completely different, and the latter has never been a part of a communist revolutionary war. The US cultural idea of individual gun owners using their second-amendment rights to Overthrow a Tyrannical Government is completely disconnected from the realities of revolution - we cannot simply get a list of US Political Issues and check off which sides communist theory supports, then go back to holding liberal positions because 'communism supports guns'.
Ignoring everything else, socialist states have enacted strict gun control once military and police power is in the hands of the proletariat as a class - the socialist position is not simply taking one side of the liberal US gun control debate, even if the proposed side is that of the libertarian would-be guerrillas with their recce rifles and floral shirts.

i included those tags because they’re just so fucking hilarious like she’s the only conservative woman on the court and they chose her specifically so you fucking dodo birds would do exactly this shit. she is the single woman in a 6- or 5- judge majority doing this shit. and the pandering over race…..okay? clarence thomas is a black man. there is an entire dedicated black evangelical anti-abortion lobby. there is an entire dedicated black nationalist anti-abortion lobby. disabled people on this website BEEN called women who seek abortions over fetal defects eugenicists. “men are also affected by this” are you going to elaborate how men are affected by this on the same level as women and how that negates the fact that the vast majority of “pro-life” politicians and power brokers are men? and can you explain how this idiotic logic does not also apply to issues like police brutality, government surveillance, or mass incarceration?

me, most of the time: ah, criminal minds, a show i watch for background noise and so know very little about the writer’s room or who’s actually behind it.
criminal minds: pointedly makes a character speak up for libertarians and make them seem like people who just don’t like to follow the rules with nothing else at all notorious or bad about them whatsoever
criminal minds: this crime LOOKS like a hate crime bc it’s black girls being killed. but it was actually done by a black man. makes u think.
criminal minds: men will just follow a woman anywhere. that’s plain science.
criminal minds: yeah conversion therapy is wrong but only if they’re using torture tactics.
criminal minds: unironically has morgan use words like “my honeys” and “groove thang” to prove he’s the “cool” one
me: oh. this really was written by straight middle-aged white men huh.

I can't sleep so here are some fun facts about my upbringing
When we were little, my dad trained me to be good at chess and my sister to be good at poker. Sometimes he'd do endgame drills: he would set up a board with just a king and pawn on his side and a king, pawn, and knight or queen on mine, and he would see if I could beat him. I am not remotely good at chess anymore but my sister still has a very impressive poker face.
I don't eat meat anymore but my first clear memory is of sashimi
When I was in high school my dad taught me to do some basic stunt driving, controlled skids and the like. I have mostly forgotten how though.
When I was in my late teens or early twenties, my dad booked my sister and I a half-day pistol training intensive course with a heavily tattooed ex-military guy named Jeremiah who had incongruously stunning eyelashes. We started at maybe 6 in the morning because it was July in Indiana and well over 90 degrees by the time we finished around noon. We learned how to field-strip a Glock 19 and did target practice. By the time we were done, my right hand was so sore that I was a better shot with my left, which is very much not my dominant hand.
Relatedly, if you search my birth name online, I think you can still find a photo of my dad teaching me to shoot at the age of 7.
We didn't really eat together or have formalized meal times, and I didn't quite get the hang of using silverware until college. I could manage a single fork or spoon, but when cutting things I would hold my implements in my fists and clumsily mangle my food. My high school girlfriend taught me to cook.
After I moved out, my mom sent me a book purporting to be a guide on how to live through an EMP attack. It had a whole section on how important the Christian bible would be to rebuilding life after the collapse of society as we know it, including specific passages that may be of use. I called my mom up and asked very tentatively if she had actually read the book before sending it to me, on account of we're Jewish and various flavors of agnostic. She said she skimmed it.
When I was 7 or 8, an animal got trapped in the wall between our kitchen and bathroom, and it would scrabble around in there and make a very alarming scuttling-scraping noise. I found this very frightening, so my mother decided to give the animal a name, like a pet, to make it less scary. (The name was Egbert.) This was a creative solution and might have worked, but we had never had pets, so I had no frame of reference for how I was supposed to feel about that. Egbert later chewed his way out and emerged from a pile of dirty dishes before disappearing under the oven. He was tentatively identified as a southern flying squirrel.
One time in high school some friends tried to drive to my house and got lost for two hours.

not to be the juxley girl on main but i think if transhumanists acknowledged that the origin and originator of the term was rooted in both eugenics and social democracy we'd have a much more interesting and contentious conversation about it than using ai art and chat gpt and uploading people's brains to computers.

im out of the "information/ fact checking" game, but im begging yall to look into not just the sources of the articles you like and reblog, but the people who wrote them too.
#rem rambles#this just in. libertarians dont have the capacity for nuance. sorry.#thats a conservative that doesnt want to be ''called'' a conservative. they are just as trash as the rest of them.#there is room for a conversation about how many people are pro-hamas. and how you should really not equate hamas to palestine#there is ALSO room for a conversation about how ungodly demonic the idf is and how that barbarism is pushing people behind hamas#there is ALSO room for the realization that making everywhere EXCEPT israel unsafe for jewish people is EXACTLY what israel wants to do.#so the insanity of the idf makes sense. to stoke the flames. to make it worse. to actively sow dissent and hatred towards jewish people.#and placing that blame on people who are reacting to watching one country starve another and are grasping at anyone to root for- yeah i#can get why people are just blindly like 'houthi's r good!' because no one else is standing up to israel like them. you dont wait for#the perfect team to root for. would it be best if hamas stopped? and then what? exactly.#i can sit here and say ''i support palestine but i do not like hamas' tactics in more recent history. i also am not the biggest fan of#the houthis or hezbollah. i understand why they do what they do and their reasoning for it- but golly their politics are not good.''#and in the time it took me to say that one sentence israel has leveled another city block and had another tantrum about children being fed.#''and rep. ilhan omar's child was arrested-'' was that fun fact just there for giggles or was it there to pretend like antisemetism is#already so violently rooted in democrats in congress and the ONLY resolution to your jewish siblings is to REMOVE them.#and if you DONT root out these antisemites from the left (ignore the ones on the right tho) then YOURE bad and wrong. you dont wanna#be bad AND wrong :(((

I do think that the biggest fallacy in American politics today is the idea that “more voters are registering as independent, which means the Silent Centrist Majority are dissatisfied with Both Parties Bad”. You see this coming up a lot, usually from centrist talking heads who think Biden could be blander if he worked at it, but if you look at the actual swing of counties with large growth in independent voters - the classic example being so-called “college town counties” - they tend to lean further left than the mainline Democratic Party, with turnout going to the Democrats from voters who pick the lesser evil.
