Wat vind ik aan het strand.

Wie regelmatig het strand bezoekt, weet dat het niet veel moeite kost er iets te vinden of te bewonderen. Er ligt altijd wel wat. Krabben, schelpen, zeesterren, wieren, vissen, vreemde vogels en met een beetje geluk tref je zelfs een zoogdier. Er achter komen waar je precies naar staat te kijken is in de regel minder eenvoudig. Plak maar eens de juiste naam op zo’n wier, poliep, vis of gevogelte. Gelukkig is er tegenwoordig BeachExplorer: een praktische app waarmee veel strandvondsten ter plaatste en terstond gedetermineerd kunnen worden.

Visboeck

Het grootste deel van de geschiedenis had men geen praktische app om strandvondsten op naam te brengen. Sterker nog, lange tijd had men helemaal niets. In den beginne zal dat geen probleem zijn geweest, dan verzon je gewoon zelf een naam, maar toen de namen eenmaal gegeven waren, werd het lastig. Gelukkig vond men het boek uit en ontstond ergens het lumineuze idee deze te vullen met afbeeldingen en namen van wezens die men op het strand gevonden had. Zodoende ontstond wat wij nu noemen de strandgids. Het Visboeck van Adriaen Coenen is daar een prachtig voorbeeld van.

Het Visboeck mag dan een prachtig naslagwerk zijn, erg praktisch was het niet. Qua formaat en gewicht was het niet iets om in je binnenzak of pukkel te dragen. En laat dat nu precies zijn wat je bij strandvondsten wel wil. Het merendeel van de aanspoelsels meurt namelijk dusdanig dat mee naar huis nemen voor verdere inspectie geen aantrekkelijk optie is.

Wat vind ik aan het strand

Het duurde even, maar uiteindelijk werden de strandgidsen kleiner en dus handzamer. Rond het begin van de vorige eeuw bereikten ze het pocketformaat. Behalve handzaam werden ze ook steeds completer. Een mooi voorbeeld van zo’n gids kocht ik onlangs in de plaatselijke kringloopwinkel: Wat vind ik aan het strand, door Dr. W. J. Prud’homme van Rein. Dit geoutilleerde werk uit 1940 heeft een mooi zakformaat.

Hoe praktisch en geoutilleerd de door Prud’homme van Rein samengestelde strandgids ook mag zijn, ik neem het niet meer mee naar het strand. Daarvoor heb ik de app. Waar ik de gids voor heb aangeschaft, zijn de afbeeldingen van L. P. Pouderoyen, Jos Ruting en M. J. C. Kolvoort. Dat zijn ware kunstwerkjes. In het bijzonder die van eerstgenoemde.

Up to 2.5cm. Right claw slender and extremely elongated, highly variable colouring. Typically tan with a hint of green, top of legs and hands often described as iridescent, lighter claw tips.

Introduced from the coast of North America, likely through ballast water, and first noted in the north sea in 2020 when it seemed to have already established a small population. Going off beachexplorer data, so far they look to be confined to the south eastern north sea, though their range is clearly expanding. They seem to be coexisting with P. bernhardus just fine, according to Neumann et al. (2022).

Only present in some parts of the wadden sea at time of writing (march 2023), and thus not on Juist. Only time will tell when or whether they make it here at all, though there is a credible report of one from Langeoog from August of 2022 (and two false ones from Juist which clearly show the red claw marking of a P. bernhardus).

Diogenes curvimanus. south claw hermit crab

Diogenes Einsiedler

Up to ~2.5cm. The left claw is noticably larger than the other, yellowish or tan, often with reddish markings or a green tint, the underside lighter.

Recently common in most parts of the southern north sea; migrating in from the Atlantic with rising temperatures. Often found congregating in great numbers in tidepools in the wadden sea. Able to bury themselves very quickly when disturbed.

In 2022 a paper proposed that D. pugilator, previously regarded as one species with high local variation ranging all the way from the north sea down to Angola (incl. the mediterranian), should actually be split up based on their genetic analysis which lead to them resurrecting D. curvimanus and coining their own new name. While they suggest there are likely more species in this genus previously lumped together, it appears that North Sea Diogenes are now called D. curvimanus. Beachexplorer has moved their entire species profile for D. pugilator over, in any case.

The only left handed crab here, doesn't use anything larger than Littorina snail shells.
