August 10 2018 Vic, Catalonia and Andorra
Today we drove to Vic, where our friend Joan grew up. It’s a small city in northern Catalonia and, when we decided to join our friends in Andorra to hike tomorrow, we thought it might be fun to visit Vic on the way. According to Wikipedia:
“Vic is the capital of the comarca of Osona, in the Barcelona Province, Catalonia, Spain. Vic's location is 69 km (43 mi) from Barcelona and 60 km (37 mi) from Girona. Vic's position has made it one of the most important towns in central Catalonia.
Vic is of ancient origin. In past times it was called Ausa by the Romans. Iberian coins bearing this name have been found there. The Visigoths called it Ausona. Sewage caps on sidewalks around the city will also read "Vich", an old form of the name.
During the 8th and 9th centuries, Vic sat in the Spanish Marshes that separated Frankish and Islamic forces. It was destroyed in 788 during a Muslim incursion. Afterwards only one quarter was rebuilt, which was called Vicus Ausonensis (vicus is Latin for city borough), from which the name Vic was derived. It was repopulated by Wilfred the Hairy in 878 who gained control over the high part of the city and gave up the lowest part to the bishop to construct the episcopal see. From then on, the city was ruled by the count of Barcelona and by the bishop of Vic.
At a council in Toulouges in 1027, the bishop of Vic established the first Peace and Truce of God that helped reduce private warfare.
During the 18th century the city was the first focus of the rebellion against the centralist policy of King Philip V of Spain. The conflict became the War of the Spanish Succession.
In the early 20th century Vic had 9500 inhabitants, and in 1992 it hosted Roller Hockey events of the Barcelona1992 Summer Olympics.”
We had a very nice lunch at El Jardinet before exploring the city with all its ancient buildings and bridges.
This building was once a Roman theater.
From this old Roman bridge a newer bridge is visible.
According to Wikipedia:
“A cathedral in Vic appears documented in the year 516, though it was destroyed during an Arab raid in 717-718. It was rebuilt in 886 when the count Wilfred the Hairy repopulated the area. It was remodeled by Abat Oliba in the 11th century in Romanesque style, building the same bell tower and crypt which are still standing nowadays. The crypt still has the pre-Romanesque capitals. The cloister dates from the 14th century and its built in Gothic style, while some chapels were built later in Baroque style. “
The village square, called Plaza Mayor in Spanish, is really large and impressive, and probably the site of many celebrations. After lunch we made the scenic drive to Andorra.

“Andorra is a tiny, independent principality situated between France and Spain in the Pyrenees mountains. It’s known for its ski resorts and a tax-haven status that encourages duty-free shopping. In the capital of Andorra, la Vella has boutiques and jewelers on Meritxell Avenue and several shopping centers. The old quarter, Barri Antic, houses Romanesque Santa Coloma Church, with a circular bell tower.”
After checking into our hotel, the Andorra Park Hotel, which is on the mountainside overlooking Andorra, with beautiful gardens, we rested in our comfortable room and then ate dinner at the restaurant in the hotel, which was quite good. After dinner we called it a night and went to bed early to prepare for our hike tomorrow.
