How will this work?

Characters will face off against each other in a poll in pairs as shown in the bracket above. The winner of each pair will progress to the next round, until there is a final winner. Basically, like a regular single-elimination bracket. Voting will start on September 22, 2023 and each poll will run for one week. Once all round of 16 polls close, the quarter final polls will open within 24 hours and each of those will also run for one week. Rinse and repeat for the semifinal and final rounds. We encourage you to follow the blog to not miss any new polls!

Only 16 contestants? Such a small bracket!

Yes, unfortunately there are not a lot of significant ironbron characters. We wanted a bracket that would break down nicely and evenly. So for one more round we’d need to go up to 32 characters, and while we could find 32 named ironborn characters, at some point it becomes a little arbitrary which name-only/single mention characters would be picked vs. not picked. We’re sorry if we’ve excluded your minor fave! Feel free to tell us who they are in an ask so we can take that into consideration next time.

Can I send in propaganda and such?

We won’t be posting propaganda under the polls, BUT feel free to send asks with propaganda, comments, thoughts, whatever, and we’ll publish them here for everyone to see!

Do you think Theon would have gotten along well with his fellow hostage/ward Baelor Blacktyde?

From what we see of Baelor, he blames Balon for his father’s death, cautious about the kingsmoot, knows his history, takes his adopted Faith seriously, mistrusts the older Greyjoys, is somewhat dressier than other ironborn (with that sable cloak and silver star), and chooses to die rather than take Euron as his liege. There’s some things in common with Theon (like the fancier clothes/jewelry, willing to die for a lost cause, although Theon is willing to take an escape until he’s trapped), but I think on the surface that his caution and dislike of Balon/Old Way that Theon naively champions at the start of ACOK means that they’d probably be too different to be friends. However, if Theon did make a claim, I think that he’d support him over the Greyjoy uncles out of pragmatism, while trying to curb his enthusiasm for reaving.

I’m going to assume that this is the same anon who asked how I’d think an AGOT/ACOK Theon would get on with the Harlaws. If I had to guess what ironborn he might get on with, it’s Maron Volmark (naive 16 year old of prestigious lineage eager to keep warring, like a less justified Robb), all of the Botleys less Tris (since their dad Sawane was killed for supporting him, it seems he left an impression. Maybe Tris would try to befriend him for help with Asha, but that’s likely to irritate him), Lucas Codd (until he shows his true cruelty I could see them being superficial friends over women and wealth), Gormond Goodbrother (fond of horseback riding), Dagon the Drunkard Greyjoy (likes wine and fighting), the Sharps (support reaving the Mander, one stayed loyal to Theon at Winterfell), and probably others in addition to those he’s already interacted well with (Adrack Humble). I've tweeted before about long traditions of religious tolerance in Westerosi society (something they actually share with both Valyria and many of the Free Cities) and it's true but there's a couple of things I want to add after reading more.

First is that religious tolerance in the Iron Islands declined after Greyjoy's Rebellion. This is referenced a few times. Asha remembers "The woman was so old that a septon had once said she must have nursed the Crone. That was when the Faith was still tolerated on the isles." On the other hand, character like Baelor Blacktyde are able to openly display their faith so it looks like the Faith of the Seven is not tolerated as an institution (septs closed, septons expelled) but it's permitted in term of individuals' beliefs.

The other is the War of the Five Kings has led to its decline in the South (ie in Lannister territory/the Crownlands/the middle really). It's less pronounced than the Iron Islands (let alone Melisandre being literally the worst) but you start to see increasing bigotry towards the Old Faith (and even ethnic bigotry towards the First Men). This is particularly pronounced when Janos Slynt turns up at the wall and uses it to attack Jon in his not-quite-a-trial but the Cersei etc make comments about it too. One of the Sparrows' main things is "demon worship" and Cersei latches onto that and says the Old Gods and R'hllor are demons. Tbh idk if that's what the Sparrows actually mean but they don't seem to complain so kinda makes sense tbh.

genderbent theon already compels me in its usual setup (i.e. she is still the hostage) but tbh in a world where theon was born a girl (teora? theia?), asha would be the one sent away as a hostage because she'd be the heir.

she'd be 13-14 when she arrived at winterfell, still young, but old enough to have her psyche mostly shaped by the iron islands. alannys raised her to be bold. how would she handle her new position in a foreign society? she'd be a good deal older than sansa and arya, but i would like to see how they interact. maybe besides jon, arya could see asha as someone she related to. as the heir to the iron islands the crown would definitely look into getting her married off, arguably more so than theia. but the starklings are too young, and benjen took himself out of the equation. would robert consider another great house? edmure? willas or garlan? would she then have been sent to riverrun or highgarden instead? (maybe not the reach, though, since baelor blacktyde was already sent to oldtown.) i am beginning to like the idea of asha being sent to be part of catelyn's entourage in winterfell in preparation for her eventual marriage to edmure.

meanwhile balon would raise theia as his heir. most likely she'll be similar to asha in the original timeline, although she wouldn't have had her own crew for as long. maybe she'll still have a fondness for fashion, which she probably won't be as mocked for, written off as a young woman's acceptable frivolity. i also think if asha is getting married earlier balon might also want theia married if he's serious about theia inheriting over asha (which he probably would be, the thought of greenlander grandchildren ruling his throne would drive him crazy). one way to ensure theia's inheritance would, as unsavoury as it sounds, be marrying her to one of her uncles, probably victarion. otherwise allying with another major house would also be good, maybe one of the goodbrother triplets? they're about robb's age. wouldn't it be cute if they were also redheads.

asha tully-greyjoy travels to meet her father to offer an alliance against the lannisters, insisting to her husband that she can go alone. theia sits in the place of honor beside their father, with a tall auburn boy that reminds asha of the boy who sent her here. while theia is sent to capture deepwood motte like asha in the original timeline, our asha is not trained at arms and probably stays on pyke.

winterfell is never sacked. robb never marries jeyne westerling. the red wedding still happens, but at robb's wedding to a frey daughter rather than edmure's. the freys do not have their paper-thin excuse this time, and they will be even more reviled by westeros, if that is even possible. edmure will be held prisoner, which could be good news or bad news for asha depending on how much she likes him.

asha is probably one of the first to know of balon's death at pyke. she quickly moves to claim the seastone chair while theia and victarion are away, but euron suddenly returns, and aeron calls for a kingsmoot. which euron probably still wins. and the greyjoy sisters will have to work together to save the situation...

Is it an early example of Robert’s misrule that, after the Greyjoy Rebellion he only demanded one hostage and didn’t even take responsibility for keeping him, rather than requiring all houses that participated to surrender a hostage as was done with the Blackfyres? Balon Greyjoy might have had a sociopathic disregard for Theon’s well-being, but would the Blacktydes. Harlaws, Goodbrothers, etc have felt the same about their sons?

No.

First, Theon isn't the only hostage. Baelor Blacktyde was also a hostage.

Second, distributing hostages to your vassals is a sign of favor and a normal part of feudal politics.

Lol you know what the TrisTheon is ahahfh. For everyone else reading: its an AU where Tris goes with Theon to Winterfell, they kinda develop a stressed out fwb relationship there, and Ramsay used that against them when they're captured, lets try to post a slightly less graphic bit:

He doesn't know many prayers - his mother taught him the silent ways of Lonely Light, not those approved by the priests, and Baelor Blacktyde stopped praying to the Drowned God the day his father died. 

Those he does remember he says under the whip, and it feels like every word is erased from his mind as soon as it's spoken, until all he can say is <i> What is dead may never die </i>, over and over again. It makes them angrier than anything else he said, even more than when he still had courage to call them mad beasts and turncloaks, but for that it feels like it has power. Every time they take a bit of skin he imagines shedding all his scales, not like a fish but like a snake, leaving a brand new creature beneath, and he can imagine rising again.

Birthday Thyra: that was supposed to be your birthday gift and then to be battleship Word count boss fodder and I could finish It for neither lol. I have about 3k of it and its a classic Theon and Kyra run away from the Dreadfort together thingie. A snippet:

She lets him stew for just a little before she huddles back-to-back to him, the cloak thrown over both as best as can be done. He squeezes his eyes shut and tries not to picture how very easily now, if he hadn’t fucked everything up, she could be wrapped around him and laying her head on his shoulder. He had been ashamed of how much he liked being held by her, back in lord Stark’s fucking bed, musing that the child was there and he was at a point of disgrace where he couldn’t exclude the gods to give him back his voice just in time to gossip about his frailty to the entire North, that the ironborn were used to ships and unaccustomed to knocking. Fully convinced the fucking army at war’s chief concern while he was leading them to their deaths was to pry into his fucking bedchamber.

Any concerns he had conceived when he had all his skin and a warm fireplace feel very far away now and immaterial, regardless of what danger had actually been there. It’s hard to evade the thought that when he was there and could have appreciated it, he should have drawn Kyra’s arms tighter around himself and showered them with kisses and perhaps even wept, though he probably didn’t feel like it then as he does now.

Yeah thou counterfeitst is the baby Asha fic and I don't have any new snippets to give you 😭 it's meant to extend from the very end of the rebellion to about a year later and encompass the whole Tris misadventure + lots of family drama, predictably. I had It so long i probably already put all the interesting parts on the Citadel

Snuggles is just a sequel to this fic where the Montacrew bois get to chill and snuggle after having rescued Romeo from the Capulets lol. V self consciously Italian and i have only disjointed bit.

Do you think Grrm could have given Slavers Bay more nuance?

Yes. GRRM has written societies antagonistic to the main protagonist before, such as the ironborn and the wildlings (who don’t even get the benefit of a POV as the ironborn do if you don’t count Varamyr). While yes, these groups generally want to invade/raid the lands the protagonist cares for, they’re shown to have positive sides as well; the wildlings have some form of democratic leadership, they’re going south to flee the Omnicidal Others which is sympathetic, women can be spearwives and woods witches with political power, there’s evidence they can live in settled villages and not raid; same with some of the ironborn that have the “New Way” of trading/negotiating with mainland Westeros and settling there as peaceful neighbors. In book 5 we have the “Shavepates” who’ve accepted Dánerys’ rule, and the Green Grace who says she values peace above all, so there’s an attempt to show the Slavers Bay citizens aren’t all cruel greedy slavers…but the Shavepate advocates child murder for the hostages and open war, and it’s widely speculated Galare has her own agenda. Basically there’s no equivalent to Rodrik Harlaw, Tormund Giantsbane, Ygritte, Gilly, Val and Dalla, Dagmer Cleftjaw, Baelor Blacktyde or Dunstan Drumm among the Slaver’s Bay elite, in terms of complexity (the show was actually better in this regard with Hizdahr and Mossador, which is saying something). I’ll leave you to figure out why that is.

While he did convert to the Seven while a hostage in Oldtown, no doubt influenced by his father’s death, I don’t know if he was knighted. I'm guessing it would have been mentioned if he were.
