Since I left for my road trip around this time last year, I missed the foliage, which is my favorite part of living in New England.

After looking at some peak foliage maps and seeing some recent pictures in and around the White Mountains in New Hampshire, I decided to do a last minute trip to not only see the foliage, but to backcountry camp alone for the first time since January.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t the only one with this bright idea as I ran into a lot of traffic and crowds. But the USFS ranger at the visitor center I spoke with suggested Gordon Pond which was perfect! Remote, away from the crowds, I could camp right by the pond, and since my national park pass expires the end of the month I was able to use it one last time!

Felt so great to camp again and to hike through the beautiful colors! I’m definitely going to be making up for lost time and doing as many fall hikes in the next few weeks as I can to chase after the peak foliage!

More of the backcountry camping trip, these are the night, next morning, and our way back to the car. As the one picture shows, the bear hang was not in the greatest shape. My first experience backcountry camping with a fire pit and i am so hooked! Going back was rougher then going up for some reason, but still such an amazing experience with amazing company, and weather, but could have done with less bugs. Somewhere in Joshua Tree National Park, New Year’s Eve 2021/New Year’s Day 2022 One thing that I’ve learned about myself is that I tend to go between extremes. Most years I want to be social where all the action is for NYE so I usually go to NYC. This year, I decided I wanted to be as far away from people as possible so I found my own little corner in Joshua Tree National Park and spent NYE in solitude staring at the stars surrounded by joshua trees and cool rocks. Everything was perfect - found a great spot for my tent, was able to use my bear canister as a makeshift cooler for a celebratory NYE beverage, and I had a whole hillside of rocks as my own personal playground with no one in sight (except for another set of dispersed campers that had their own rocks to play with far away from me lol). The only thing that sucked was the wind…it was suuuuper windy so it was too cold to hang out and stare at the stars and hard to take good night pictures with my phone but other than that, such a great way to end 2021 with a beautiful sunset and start 2022 with an equally beautiful sunrise.
