So, new job, new thing I've learned:
The serger that Viking calls the Amber 100, which was also the H Class 200 and H Class 250, is a serger model that gets traded and shared between brands a lot.
If your serger has the french door threading (two doors in front that make threading the lower looper guide easy), and possibly the recessed cutter, it's probably this serger regardless of brand. (Pretty much all recessed cutters are this serger, but not all of these sergers have the recessed cutter).
I have taught classes on this machine for over a year. I have been receiving training on servicing this machine. I know how to thread it, but I've watched two people thread this incorrectly and then just say that it doesn't make a good stitch.
SO.
PSA.
Tumblr media
The thread guide that looks like an elephant? The thread goes IN FRONT of that machine. Many manuals specify to make sure you put the thread in front of the elephant. PUT THE THREAD IN FRONT OF THE ELEPHANT. Do not put the thread BEHIND The elephant. IN FRONT. IN FRONT.
Your serger probably runs quietly and makes a lovely stitch and you're just fucking threading it wrong.
PebcaSerger.
Tumblr media
Here's where it's located on the threading path. Thread in front of the elephant.
Machines that i know for sure have the elephant: Husqvarna Viking H-Class 200, Husqvarna Viking H-Class 250, Husqvarna Viking Amber 100, Babylock Vibrant.
Machines that I suspect have the elephant: This serger labeled Buxel from walmart.com, many more.
If your serger has the elephant-shaped guide that the thread goes in front of so please put it in front of it please let me know the make and model, and I'll add them to this list so that hopefully people who have these sergers can find this post in a google result.
Starting a new cult about thread going in front of elephants.

Has anyone ever heard of Simplicity brand sewing machines? A quilt shop in the next town over has a simplicity sl350 serger for $99 which is a price I could afford right now. It's a really simple machine from the 90s but it's hard to find reviews due to its age. I know typically with sewing machines older is better due to enshittification of... everything... but I've never heard of this brand before so idk what their quality is like. The shop offers free repairs for the first year and $99 is a decent chunk of my savings but it's not undoable and not a horrible amount to lose if the thing is a dud...
I emailed the shop to ask how hard it would be to find things like feet/knives/lightbulbs, etc for it because I think that will be the deciding factor for me. According to sewingpartsonline it can take babylock parts, which supports a statement someone leaving a review made saying the parent company of babylock made them and it's the same machine as the babylock lauren but I don't just trust random people on the internet like that. Someone else said simplicity machines were manufactured by brother. So I just asked the shop if they knew which parent company manufactured it. That's less important to me than whether or not I can find parts for it tho.
I'd been planning on buying a secondhand serger in the $150-$250 range once I built up my savings a bit more but this price is doable now and I'm honestly partly interested in it because it is older and therefore potentially higher quality than modern bottom line machines.

I need this. I need X. I need item X which I learned about through someone's offhand comment right now, right this second. I have been researching this product for 15 hours straight, have read every single review on every single review platform, watched every single youtube video even slightly related to it, and I have verified without a doubt that if I don't physically have X in my hands by the end of the day, my life will be irreversibly ruined and I should just end it right now.
The item 3 days after I get it:

She’s mean, she’s green, she’s a badass chain stitching machine. Midge maybe small but she can multitask like no other. This #Makevember post introduces Juki’s first combination machine, built circa 1975. The EA605 uses industrial machine parts but housed in a domestic, table top machine. Able to have industrial sized needles, Midge has zero qualms about binding up those thicker materials. #babylock #serger #twinneedle #juki #sewing #makersgonnamake https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp15WTDhFSb/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1po8efuw3jb12

I finally got a serger!!!!! She's a vintage (okay, maybe just old) Babylock BL3-406 and she's kind of a mess right now, but I'm going to clean her up and get her serviced. ✨ Older sewing machine models are super tough and last a really long time, don't pass on a secondhand machine just because it's not new and shiny! . . . #sewing #sewingmachine #serger #babylock #cosplay #cosplayer #cosplayersofinstagram #cosplaylife

So, basically, the ease of use on any serger is based almost entirely on how difficult it is to thread one specific guide on the lower looper.
Tumblr media
The serger in this picture is easy to thread on that guide, because the side opens. Most sergers do not open on the side, and you have to use some other mechanism to get into the looper back in the depths of your machine, meaning that you can't even see it when you need to thread it.
So, sergers use various techniques to make this process easier. One of the ones that my store sells has a built-in device to grab the thread and put it into the hook on the back of the lower looper.
Quick note to everyone, though, when you're trying to sell a machine, maybe calling it, "This little hooker" isn't the best terminology you could have used.
Though, if you're buying a serger, ask them to show you how easy it is to thread the lower looper and ask them if it comes with a 2-thread converter. How quickly you can switch between stitches has a lot more importance than what those stitches actually are. If it's too much of a pain to switch between stitches, you're never going to use them.

My garden is in the Sewing Machine Department!
Tumblr media
I'm showcasing two Babylock sergers: the top-of-the line 8-thread "Triumph" (which is awesome, and costs as much as my car) and the entry-level jet-air threading 4-thread serger, the "Victory." (Which is the current version of my own beloved Babylock "Imagine.")
See where I'm going with this?
What I'm making is a variation of this cool idea I saw at Michael's:
Tumblr media
I picked up some green flatware at the dollar store. Then I picked out a perfect orange fabric and started creating...
I also found a cute project online. I modified it with a flatlock seam and a rolled hem.
Tumblr media
With a few simple rolls and folds, add a band or a tie on a ribbon, and presto!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Carrot napkin!
Here's a whole bunch.
Tumblr media
But wait! What should I wear?
How about a Garden Apron? Maybe a cute apron made out of the blank kitchen towels that the store carries. With a cute carrot design on it, maybe an applique using the same orange carrot fabric I'm using for the carrot napkins. Yeah! That's the ticket!
Tumblr media
Like this! Garden gloves and mini tools were on clearance at the grocery store. I'm going to wear a 3-tiered skirt with green apples on it that I made with a serger, and the shirt that matches it.
If I can find it, I'll add my broad-brimmed orange straw hat.
If you're local, feel free to swing by Jackman's Fabrics on Saturday, April 15th (2023) for the Demo Day part of our 120th anniversary sale. I will be demonstrating how to make this fun craft until 4pm.
I might record my demo for the store's social media, so keep a weather eye on our Facebook and Instagram.
Tumblr media
Oh, and if anyone wants that carrot design, DM me and tell me your machine format; I'm giving it away free. It fits a 5x7 (or 130x180mm) frame and uses three colors.
