s2g if I see one more person on fb share that "Baaww the catholic church is rich, make them pay for the Notre dame!" tweet I'm gonna start choking bitches.

1) The money isn't going to the church, it's going to the paris city council. (Worth noting here that the The French Heritage Society has set up a specific drive to repair the fire damage that is utterly separate to the Friends of Notre Dame, which was set up by the archbishop of paris to aid in restoration efforts)

2) The French Ministry of Culture owns Notre Dame and is responsible for its maintenance, NOT the church. The Notre Dame is considered public property (as in actually owned by the state). The closest the catholic church has to anything is a 1905 law that states the state would be neutral in matters of religion and not impede worship there.

3) There comes a point - as with the dame - that a building becomes such an iconic fixture that it belongs not to the religion in question, but to everyone. The Notre Dame reached this point nearly 200 years ago, both culturally and legally.

It does not belong to the church

It belongs to all of us.

So if you want to donate, donate. If you don't or can't. then don't. But don't let some stupid fucking purity politics tweet make your decision for you.
