7 Hours in Etihad’s First Class Suite
Let me just say right off the bat, it's not long enough.
And also, by no mean this is a review — because honestly, this flight is spectacular and I’m really not gonna get into the nitty-gritty, technical stuff (you can totally google that at your leisure).
After a whirlwind of a 10-hour, martini-filled, water-deprived stopover in London (more on that later), it’s finally time to hop into the flight that I’ve been watching over-and-over-and-over again on YouTube: the Etihad first class suite, with service to Abu Dhabi, on a Boeing 787-9.
I knew this flight was gonna be great. It’s so great it totally ruins flying (any other way) for me. 
The second I stepped on the plane and the flight attendant got a glance of my seat number, *ahem* 1A, you could see almost a mini panic as she was trying to find the first class FA to take me to my personal suite. Yes, not a pod, not a seat — a suite. Bed, dining table for two and closet space included. 
Trying not to lose my mind next to the couple who’s clearly done this before, I calmly sat down to make sure everything was okay (as if anything would go wrong). Noise cancelling earphones, check. Entertainment centre. check. Mini bar, stocked. Acqua di Parma amenity kit and faux fur throw, check, check, check. I took a decent amount of content yet I forgot to take a photo of the actual suite without me in it — amateur. I guess I’ll have to remind myself, for next time.
"This smells, tastes, and feels rich" I said to myself as I sipped the 2006 Charles Heidsieck Brut (bless pre-departure champagne) that's served alongside Arabic coffee, dates, and cold towel. I was fully living the Sex and The City 2 Movie fantasy, with less marital issues and no sheikh paying for the trip. As they're boarding the rest of the plebs plane, my assigned flight attendant went through a laundry list of preferences for the rest of the flight: dinner service, wine pairing, water (still or sparkling), level of privacy, and more importantly what champagne would I like for right after take-off — The answer, was rosé, by the way. 
She then dropped off a bag of loungewear for me to change to if I prefer, which, I absolutely needed to, since I was wearing a very London-specific Thom Browne tartan suit to dress the part with not enough room to handle every menu items we're about to devour. 
I was utterly torn, between drinking as much 2002 vintage champagne until I’m unconscious in this suite or catching up on sleep as we had a 17 hour layover in Abu Dhabi awaited us. 
As I continued to ponder, the plane took off. Never in my life I witnessed a  take off this smooth, this quite— it’s almost like the engines just whisper “let’s go girls” oh so subtly. And not three minutes after, a glistening, freshly popped, frosty bottle of Champagne Duval-Leroy Rosé Prestige showed up at my door. And this, marked the beginning of the most incredible three-hour dining experience in the sky.
A change of clothes, fresh towel, and a switch to Duval-Leroy Femme de Champagne 2002 later, the caviar service begins — A proper caviar service. With blinis en accompagnement, and of course, the mother of pearl spoon that I almost smuggled into my amenity kit. 
“Would you like some more champagne”, she asked, fully knowing we finished half a bottle within the first 15 mins of dinner. I mean, what kind of monster would say no? By the time the lobster course arrived, we’re one bottle in, and flying has never felt better. We managed to go through most to the wine list (pictured below) and honestly, this list slaps. Hard. Hard enough to piss off some somm friends. 
The Jacques Prieur was stunning, oh-so-fragrant and crisp, with balanced salinity to finish. The Pascal Jolivet was delightfully expressive with lovely, lingering mouthfeel. By the time we wanted to taste the riesling, the palate cleanser arrived, followed by the main course shortly. Yes, there’s a palate cleanser course.
Cooking tenderloin to a perfect medium rare is as hard as it is for some restaurants with fully equipped kitchen. Somehow, Etihad nails it, 30,000ft in the air — now that’s impressive. Whatever magic compartment they have in their galley, it works. For the wine, I managed to tasted all the reds and well, big surprise (not really), the Cabernet plays so elegantly with this perfectly cooked piece of meat. 
The stretchy pyjama pants were barely holding it anymore but I still had to save some room for dessert — creme brûlée with a side of Haagen Dasz ice cream, which I washed down with another glass of the ’02 Femme de Champagne. 
*Knock knock* “Would you like me to make the bed for you?” - a sentence I don’t hear enough on the ground, let alone in the sky. Honestly, It’s even more special when it’s asked on an Acqua di Parma-scented cabin. As she’s getting my bed ready, we took a little stroll around the plane to see where the rest of the people lived, and you know, stretched… I returned to a fully made bed with a side of crippling anxiety, knowing that for the rest of our journey, there’s no first class cabin on the planes — scary, I know (Kidding, Etihad’s business cabins aren’t so bad). Nothing another glass of champagne couldn’t fix at this point. So I ordered bed-side champagne to calm me down. *closed doors*
I went to bed, half-drunk, fully stuffed and extremely exhausted. The 3-hr nap I had was clearly not enough to prepare me for what’s waiting for us on the other side. But frankly, that was a very comfortable nap. The flight attendant gently nudge me to notify that it’s time for breakfast. I woke up still drunk, still full, with 90-something minute left on this flight. I couldn’t possibly eat another bite. What was supposed to be an omelette and caviar breakfast, turned into a coffee and champagne kind.
Never thought hearing “thirty minutes to landing” could make someone feel so sad, but there I was, back in my suit, sipping the last of the ’02 Femme de Champagne, not ready to leave the flight.
Thank you Etihad for the most incredible 7 hours in the sky, Michelin-star-worthy (I said what I said) dinner experience, and if you’re reading this, I’m ready for another trip on the first class suite, and hopefully on the A380 next time.

Centre Steps In As Vistara Crisis Deepens With More Delays, Cancellations
At least 38 Vistara flights originating from key cities were cancelled this morning as the airline reeled under non-availability of pilots. As many as 15 flights taking off from Mumbai, 12 from Delhi and 11 from Bengaluru were among those cancelled.

This comes after more than 50 Vistara flights were cancelled yesterday and about 160 delayed. Speaking to NDTV, passengers had yesterday complained of poor communication and hours-long wait at the airport and slammed the airline for harassing passengers.
Vistara said in a statement yesterday that they have faced a "significant number" of flight cancellations and delays in the past few days "due to various reasons including crew unavailability".
"We acknowledge and are deeply concerned about the inconvenience this has caused to our customers. Having said that, our teams are working towards minimizing the discomfort to the customers," it said.
The airline has also said that it has decided to temporarily reduce the number of flights it operates "to ensure adequate connectivity across our network".
"We have also deployed larger aircraft like our B787-9 Dreamliner and A321neo on select domestic routes to combine flights or accommodate more number of customers, wherever possible. Furthermore, we are offering alternate flight options or refunds to affected customers, as applicable. Once again, we understand that these disruptions have caused immense discomfort to our customers, and sincerely apologise to them for the same. We are working towards stabilizing the situation and will resume operating our regular capacity very soon," the statement added.
Vistara pilots, it is learnt, are calling in sick as they protest the revised salary structure ahead of the airline's merger with Air India. The pilots have been sent the revised pay structure over mail and asked to sign on short notice. The pilots have been warned that those who don't sign will be left out of the merger.
Their flights cancelled or delayed by hours, fliers have taken to social media to express their grievances. The airline has been reiterating that the delays have been caused by operational issues and that it is working on them.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has sought a detailed report from Vistara regarding flight cancellations and major delays, a senior official has told news agency ANI.
Passengers are advised to check flight status with the airline before leaving for the airport to avoid long wait and inconvenience.

Neos is an Italian airline, headquartered in Somma Lombardo, Lombardy. It is a subsidiary of Alpitour S.p.A. Seit Ende Juni 2023 verbindet Air Premia täglich Frankfurt (FRA) mit Seoul (ICN). Die Airline wurde im Juli 2017 gegründet und betreibt derzeit fünf Maschinen vom Typ Boeing 787-9. Der IATA-Code lautet YP, der ICAO-Code APZ und das Rufzeichen AIR PREMIA. Neben Frankfurt, Terminal 2, fliegt Air Premia vom Heimatflughafen Incheon auch nach Tokio, Narita International Airport (NRT), Japan, Ho Chi Minh City, Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN), Vietnam, Bangkok, Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK), Thailand, Los Angeles, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), USA und New York, Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), USA.

Die Dreamliner von Air Premia gibt es in zwei Versionen:
HL8387 (April 2021 ausgeliefert), HL8388 (Oktober 2022 ausgeliefert) und die nagelneue HL8389 (Mai 2023 produziert) mit insgesamt 309 Sitzen (56 Premium Economy und 253 Economy) HL8517 (Februar 2018 ausgeliefert) und HL8516 (März 2018 produziert) mit insgesamt 338 Sitzen (56 Premium Economy und 282 Economy) Im vorderen Teil der Air Premia Boeing 787-9 gibt es in allen Maschinen eine Premium Economy mit 56 Plätzen, die Premia 42, die nach früheren Maßstäben sicher auch als Business Class hätte gelten können. Die Economy mit insgesamt 253 oder 282 Plätzen nennt sich Economy 35. Diese beiden Zahlenangaben stehen jeweils für den Sitzreihenabstand im Zoll-Maß. Also in der Premium Economy 42 Zoll (entspricht knapp 107 cm) und 35 Zoll in der Economy (knapp 89 cm).  Wichtig zu wissen, dass der Reihenabstand in der Econmy mit insgesamt 282 Plätzen geringer als 35 Zoll (89cm) sein kann, nämlich 30 bis 32 Zoll (rund 76 bis 81 cm).

Viel Platz in der Premia 42
Wer sich etwas schwer tut mit langen Flügen oder über 185 cm groß ist, sollte lieber auf die Premia 42 ausweichen. Die Beinfreiheit ist grandios. Auch wenn der Vorderman eine Liegeposition einnimmt, kommt die Rückenlehne trotzdem nicht bedenklich nahe. Und im Sitz ist auch genügend Platz. Eine ebene Liegefläche - wie in einer modernen Business Class - lässt sich nicht einstellen, aber das wäre auch zu viel des Guten. Wer mit Premia 42 fliegt, genießt nicht nur das großzügige Platzangebot, ein Hygenie-Set mit Hautcreme, Zahnbürste und Zahnpasta, reichhaltiges Essen mit Wein oder Bier (Speisen und Getränke werden in Plastikgeschirr gereicht) und weiche Schlappen. Economy-Passagiere erhalten zum Essen dagegen keinen kostenlosen Alkohol. Auch der Bio-Grüntee von der Insel Jeju wird zumindest laut Webseite nicht in der Economy 35 angeboten. Für die Premia 42-Passagiere gibt es zudem einen eigenen Check-in-Schalter und bevorzugtes Boarding. Wer am Fenster sitzt oder den Mittelsitz in der Mittelreihe hat, muss seinen Nachbarn bitten, wenn er mal auf Toilette gehen will. Hat der Vordermann seinen Sitz auf die maximale Liegeposition eingestellt, muss man auch ihn bitten, den Sitz etwas hoch zu stellen. Da die Seitenlehnen der Sitze in der Premium Economy relativ hoch sind, kommt man sonst nicht aus seinem Sitz raus.

Unter diesem Aspekt ist die beste Reihe in der Premia 42, die letzte Reihe, die Reihe 8. Dort hat man niemanden mehr hinter sich, der einem im Tiefschlaf bitte könnte, seinen Sitz hoch zustellen. Es ist auch in dieser Reihe möglich, die Rückenlehnen maximal so zurückzustellen, wie in den anderen Reihen. Die Sitze verfügen auch über Beinstützen. Stellt man zum schlafen seine Rückenlehne herunter und die Beinablage hoch, rutscht man irgendwie aus seinem Sitz. Gefühlt ist bei vielen asiatischen Airlines das Servicepersonal in der Regel freundlicher, das ist auch bei Air Premia der Fall. Man fühlt sich wirklich gut aufgehoben. Auch nachts kommen die Flugbegleiter regelmäßig vorbei und bieten Wasser an. Apropos Wasser: Wer gerne Sprudelwasser trinkt, muss zumindest für die Reise nach und in Südkorea darauf verzichten. Still ist angesagt. (Es gibt schlimmeres als diese Einschränkung.)
Bordunterhaltung
In der Economy kommen Full HD 12-Zoll-Touchscreens zum Einsatz, in der Economy+ werden 13-Zöller eingesetzt, die in der linken Lehne verstaut sind. Air Premia spricht auf seiner Webseite von einer großen Auswahl an Bordunterhaltung. Das ist etwas übertrieben. Die Auswahl ist recht klein und es handelt sich ausschließlich um koreanische Produktionen, die teilweise englisch untertitelt sind. Wenn Du etwas schauen willst, während des Fluges, dann bringe Dein eigenes Gerät mit und lade Dir die Filme, die Du sehen willst, vorher herunter. Beispielsweise bieten Netflix und Amazon Prime den Download vieler Filme an. Du kannst Deine Geräte über USB laden oder auch über eine gewöhnliche Steckdose.

WLAN
Auf keinen Fall solltest Du versuchen wollen, Deine Filme zu streamen. WLAN wird ja angeboten. Allerdings war sowohl auf unserem Flug von Frankfurt am Main nach Seoul, als auch auf dem Rückflug kein WLAN verfügbar. Bisher ist mir nicht gelungen zu erfahren, ob WLAN nur temporär nicht in Betrieb war oder in dieser Maschine noch nicht installiert ist. Irgendwo las ich, dass auf dieser Strecke die Maschine HL8517 eingesetzt wird, diese wurde bereits im Februar 2018 in Betrieb genommen. Vielleicht ist dieses "alte" Flugzeug noch nicht mit WLAN ausgestattet - das habe ich noch nicht rausbekommen. Selbst, wenn auf Deinem Flug WLAN verfügbar sein sollte, ist es wegen der hohen Kosten (siehe Tabelle) nicht sinnvoll zu streamen. Möglich wäre auch, dass die Übertragungsrate dafür gar nicht ausreicht.

Gimmik: Du kannst die Transparenz Deines Fensters über die Schaltfläche am unteren Rand des Fensters einstellen. Nichts mehr, mit Klappe runterziehen oder hochschieben.
