It was midnight the last time Asriel Dreemurr ever saw December Holiday, a dark night where the clouds covered the moon and the wind whistled an unfamiliar tune.
She pulled him out of the safety of his home, wrapping him up in one last tight embrace before disappearing and leaving him to deal with the fallout. From that night on, his life was never the same.
Dess's "mysterious disappearance" was never as much of a mystery as the citizens of Hometown thought.
It was midnight the last time Asriel Dreemurr ever saw Dess Holiday, a dark night where the clouds covered the moon and the wind whistled an unfamiliar tune. He was sitting at his desk, trying to transform the messy thoughts in his brain into scribbles on a page when he heard the knock at the window.
It was barely audible over the sound of the thunder and the wind, signals of a growing storm that would wipe away any traces of motion the next morning. The sound of knocking became louder and more insistent, and for a moment, Asriel was worried about Kris waking up before remembering they weren’t at home at that moment. They and Noelle were spending the night at Catti’s, a sleepover that Dess had suggested (and even somewhat forced them) to have.
He made his way over to the window, his eyes widening as he saw Dess outside. Asriel opened the window, saying, “What are you doing out here? It’s almost the middle of the night, and it’s about to start pouring!”
“I needed to talk to you,” she said. “Follow me!”
“Dess-”
But before he could say another word, she’d already hopped down, standing in the driveway. “I’m not gonna wait forever!”
Sighing, Asriel opened his window wider, trying to safely jump down. The wind was howling in his ears, and he could barely hear Dess trying to talk to him. It was only when she grabbed his hand that he even registered she was still there as she pulled him into the woods behind her.
“Where are we going?”
“Follow me, and you’ll see.”
She led him through the woods, the lightning lighting up the forest with flashes of white and thunder deafening the both of them. It wasn’t long before it would begin to storm.
After a few minutes of running, they made it out of the woods. Asriel was able to recognize the bus stop in the darkness, confusedly surveying his surroundings as Dess dragged him to the bench.
“Why are we here?” he asked, yanking his arm out of her grasp.
“My mom knows we saw that shit, Az,” she said breathlessly. “We’ve gotta skip town before we’re both fucked.”
“She wouldn’t-“
“You don’t know her, dude. She’s a bitch when she doesn’t get her way or something gets in her way, and right now, we’re in the way.”
“This is why you wanted Noelle and Kris out of the house tonight, isn’t it?”
Dess winced. “Look, we can’t just get them involved in our shit.”
“I’m not just going to leave Kris, Dess,” he said, his heart racing. “I can’t do that to them.”
“Asriel, if you stay here, you’re screwed,” she said, taking his hand and looking into his eyes. A shiver ran down his spine - Dess almost never used his full name. It was always Azzy or Az, and the usage of his full name only drove in the seriousness of the situation further.
“And if we both leave, who’s left to take care of Kris and Noelle?”
“My dad and your parents can-“
“That’s not what I mean.”
Dess’s shoulders trembled, and she threw her arms around him, pressing her face into his shoulder. “Angel, I wish all of this could be easier.”
“Such is the way of life,” Asriel said, rubbing circles on her back and running fingers through her hair.
“I wish you could come with me,” Dess whispered, leaning out of the hug and placing her hands on his shoulders.
“Why do you even have to leave?”
“My mom knows we know shit,” she said. “If I don’t get out soon, she’s gonna make my life a living hell.”
“Why were you trying to take me with you?”
“…I’ll be honest with you, Az. She’s got a shit ton of blackmail on your parents and she’s totally willing to fuck you all over to get your family out of the way. I don’t know what kind of shit she has, but I know it’s bad. Like, cause a divorce and shit bad.” Dess gulped. “I’m scared for you, too. I don’t want you to have to deal with the fallout of all this.”
“I’m strong. I can handle it,” he said, taking her hand. “I’m going to stay. Someone has to take care of our siblings.”
Dess nodded, her eyes glistening in the faint light. “I’m heading to the city,” she said. “I went on the internet a few days ago and talked to this human who was somewhat familiar with the stuff we saw in those books. They’ve offered to help me get on my feet.”
“If you get killed by a stranger you met on the internet, I’m gonna bring you back to life and kill you again.”
“You’re too nice for that, Azzy.”
He laughed. “Maybe. But I know I’ll see you again soon. I’ll graduate high school and go to college and I’ll find you once I’m out of here too, okay? Once I know that Kris and Noelle can handle themselves.”
Lightning crashed again, and a few drops of rain fell, splashing onto Asriel’s glasses. He wiped the rain off, squinting as bright light glinted off the streaks the water left behind.
“The bus is here,” Dess whispered, standing up. She looked down at Asriel, her eyes filled with sadness and longing. “I guess this is goodbye.”
“Not forever,” he said, pulling her into another hug. “You’d better DM me when you get there. Change your username or whatever, pretend to be someone else, just… Please let me know you’re safe.”
“I will.”
She pulled her arms out of the hug, tilting his face upwards and giving him one last kiss. It took Asriel by surprise, and his face grew warm, his eyes widening as she pulled away.
“You taste like cinnamon,” she whispered, walking over to the bus and stepping in without another word.
The wind picked up, and in moments, Dess Holiday was gone forever.
The fallout began when the door to the Dreemurr home slammed open, in walking the Holidays and the worst year of Asriel’s life.
Carol Holiday came into their house screaming profanities and hurling threats in the direction of his father, and Asriel’s hands instinctively found their way to Kris’s ears. They were young and impressionable; they didn’t need to hear the vile words that were being spoken. He took their hands and led them out of the house, slowly and quietly so as to not be seen, and went to the diner with them to get hot chocolate. When they returned, their mother’s eyes were red and their father was nowhere to be found.
Before Kris could ask what happened, Asriel walked them upstairs, telling them to stay in their room as he walked downstairs to grab the video game console. He paused for a moment when he caught a glimpse of Toriel glaring at a photo on the wall. A picture of her and Asgore at their wedding.
He walked over, tapping her lightly on the shoulder. “Are you okay?” he asked, his voice barely breaking the volume of a whisper.
She rubbed her eyes, her shoulders shaking. “I was supposed to be able to trust him,” she said, heartbreak and fury evident in her tone. “Shows what I know.” He decided not to question it further.
Asgore texted him a few hours later, his message simple. I’m sorry about earlier. Please know that everything that was said wasn’t true.
Asriel chose not to answer.
Two weeks later, his father moved out.
Asriel had never liked school, and it had somehow become both better and worse in the time after Dess disappeared.
He received countless sympathetic looks from his classmates, immeasurable condolences for something that the rest of them knew nothing about. Every empty apology set a new part of him aflame, rage burning ever brighter in his chest as he tried to figure out how he was supposed to deal with everything that had happened. Nobody knew anything about the things he was going through, and he wished they’d all stop pretending to know.
He threw himself into his studies, pushing himself to ace every class so he could get out of this shitty town and find Dess again. People would come to him for help he didn’t want to give, but tutoring would look good on college applications, so he stuck with it. Valedictorian wasn’t going to be enough for him.
He was the student body president and the captain of the cross country team and the most gifted singer on the church choir and he hated all of it. He led clubs and volunteered around town and got a job at the diner and every new thing he did made him hate the simplicity of Hometown more. After knowing what was going on behind the scenes, the horrors that hid inside that bunker, the truth that had driven his closest friend out of town and was driving him to the brink of insanity, he would never be able to see his world the same way.
Eventually, it was all over. Asriel graduated from high school with the honor of valedictorian and every word of his speech was empty and filled with sentiments that meant nothing. As soon as he saved enough money, he was out of Hometown in the snap of his fingers. He knew it would break Kris’s heart, but he had no choice.
He had to get out of this place before it destroyed him just like it had destroyed Dess.
College was a welcome change of pace. Though his many attempts to reach out and find Dess had failed, it felt as if a huge weight had been lifted off of Asriel’s shoulders. He was no longer Hometown’s golden boy, and he no longer had to deal with the reputation that came with his family.
He was finally free to be himself. To find who he really was.
And find himself, he did. Asriel found a new group of friends, people who cared about him for who he really was, scars and all. His roommate, Chara, understood him on a level that he didn’t think was even possible, and all their other friends were smart and funny and personable in a way Asriel could never be.
At some point he started to forget about Hometown. He’d rather let those events exist in the back of his mind, in some forgotten corner with the rest of his repressed trauma. He had a new best friend and a new circle of people who genuinely cared about him. What more was there to consider?
He’d never really forgotten about Dess, but it couldn’t be helped. She’d never responded to his attempts to reach out and he’d never been able to find her again, so what else was there for him to do? She existed as an afterthought, something that popped up in his mind every once in a while. What happened to Dess? Some questions will just never have answers.
Until one day.
The sound of knocking on their door was just barely audible over the sound of the TV, blasting the noises of Chara and Asriel’s intense Super Smashing Fighters battle. “Loser answers the door,” Chara said, mashing buttons on their controller in an attempt to knock him off the platform.
Asriel groaned, sinking down into his seat. “I don’t wanna get up. I’m so tired.”
“Well, you’ll have to once I’m done kicking your ass,” they said, grinning and pumping their fist as Asriel messed up his recovery. The screen flashed, and the victory screen showed, proclaiming Chara as the winner. “Better get going! I’ll bet they’re not gonna wait forever.”
Asriel raised his middle finger, unceremoniously dropping his controller and lumbering over to the door. The knocking had only grown more insistent, and he opened the door, fully expecting to see a friend of his or a classmate he didn’t know that well, and his heart stopped.
“Hey,” Dess said, awkwardly waving. “How’s it going?”

heyyy could you infodump a bit about your oc (arizona)? mostly abt arizona and CT's relationship but anything abt Arizona's personality is good too :3
U. i gotchu bro :P
this is goin under a read more bc im not gonna fill any1’s dash lmao
SO. Agent Connecticut! his mom (he considers her to be like his mom)! design wise, completely unintentional that they both style their hair to cover the right side of their face, but hey it works out :D
when it was revealed Zone was, in fact, NOT an adult, it was frequently brought up that he looked similar to two Freelancers, York and CT. it made things somewhat awkward between Zone and CT. during PFL (esp b4 the break in) Zone was more shy and stuck with Maine, but still very much a little shithead fucks around and finds out. CT
CT goes on missions with Zone to get her rank up on the leaderboard, but does warm up to him after a bit, and they eventually do form some kind of mother-son bond (even if CT is 5’4 and Zone is 5’8 and she has to look up at him a bit). CT and Zone get closer, and Zone eventually tells her that he doesnt trust the Director, even after hes given him his position as an Agent, and tells her that he sees ghosts in the places he’s been. this makes CT go “oh shit”. CT vaguely mentions what will eventually happen in S10 EP2 (her defecting), but doesnt tell him a lot because he’s still pretty close with a good chunk of Freelancers that would absolutely rat her out.
CT defects to the Insurrection. Zone is in denial because, well yes he was somewhat warned, he didnt expect it- plus his mom just fucking left without a hint**.
during the planning of the shipyard mission, he was interrogated by the Director and Counselor to see if CT has told him anything (she hadnt). he wasnt allowed to go on the shipyard mission due to the fact that he would have either joined CT or would let her and the Insurrection Leader to escape.
Zone finds out that Connecticut died. he does not interact with anyone other than Maine and Sigma and blames the Director fully for CT’s death. break-in comes, and Sigma requests Arizona to stay with him and Maine until he successfully gets ahold of Iota and Eta.
(quick note AZ hasnt aged much bc he fucked-around-and-found-out with Wyoming after taking on the Variagrade title, going after Gamma. he got smacked and Wyoming used his damaged-from-an-ambush time distortion and got him stuck as a teenager. he hates it.)
CT’s ghost eventually finds Zone, who reacts with a multitude of emotions, mainly anger and sadness. he was mad she hasnt found him any time before he was the Variagrade, sad that she hadn’t found him until now, yet happy that she had found him. he lets her stay around him, but is a bit resentful, and tries not to show it.
fun bonus fact: CT used to help cut Zone’s hair during PFL . it got longer after she died and during his time with the Meta. Donut, another ghost-seer, currently helps him with tips from CT.
from Zone's toyhouse: C.T. was wary of Arizona at first, but eventually started warming up to him after they began going on missions with each other. C.T. and Zone formed a mother-son relationship, and ended up sharing the idea of bad the Director was. Zone was in denial when she defected, then when C.T. dies, he doesn't interact with anyone other than Maine and Sigma, fully blaming the Director for Connecticut's death.
*AZ, Wash, Donut, and a few other characters can see ghosts. wash spec bc he seems like he doesnt believe in ghosts >:)
**CT knew Maine and other Agents that Arizona was close to would most likely come to hunt them down twice as much, especially with Zone’s enhancements and his status as the resident homicidal teen
PERSONALITY TIME. k. so Agent Arizona B here is a bit emotionally underdeveloped. he doesnt remember anything before the Labyrinth Archives- he lived there for a couple of years at least, which only had worker robots and the occasional hostile pest- and had to relearn some things. he’s introverted, shy (he was WAY more shy during PFL, but slowly gained confidence), and aggressive, especially after the Meta. he was often compared to the (then MIA, but announced KIA) former Agent Arizona by the Director and a few other Freelancers.
he’s self-destructive, stubborn, and a perfectionist. he’s also willing to change, as he joins the Red Team on Chorus and sees himself relaxing more before joining the Rebels. he can go from calmly reading to racing someone if he feels up for it. he’s sarcastic, sassy, and kind of an asshole, but he means well. he’s fairly vengeful, and gets quiet when he’s super mad. on some Freelancer missions where he was particlarly pissed so he said fuck it we ball and managed to get shot but complete the missions (still got points deducted for recklessness; he calls it blind courage)
plz feel free to ask abt other characters relationships with him or anythin else
OR abt the ghost thing bc that plays into his personality a bit
hes a little fucker (affectionate)

Tina Heath-Shuttenberg, Beautiful South
Tumblr media
Tina Heath-Schuttenberg is an AZ native who moved to Charleston, South Carolina in 2015, eventually co-founding Kwei Fei and Beautiful South, both extremely popular Asian inspired local eateries. Creative Mornings Charleston is proud to have her as the featured speaker for the April 2024 theme: Spicy.
1. What do you love most about what you do?
There's so much to love, but it's the people. First of all my Partner, David. We balance each other. The team, we're incredibly lucky to be able to work with a dedicated group who works with care, humor and creativity. The guests, when you work in a restaurant you're brought into people's lives in these really important moments. People leave with a memory, we just hope it's a good one. The community, our fellow restaurateurs are our lifeline.
2. What inspired you and how did you become involved in your current career(s)?
It was out of necessity.  We started a pop-up and someone had to work the register. I spent my youth working retail, so I knew I could work the front.  I also knew I wouldn't be great, but I was working for free. A few months later I was laid off from my full-time gig. That meant that Kwei Fei had to work. There was a point before we opened Kwei Fei at The Pour House where I was able to ask myself if I wanted to continue down this path. There was a talented team who wanted to work with David. I could move along if I wanted. When I thought about it, I knew that I wanted to be on the ride with David. I also really love a challenge and this fills that need.
3. How do you start your day?
I wish I was one of those early birds who jumped out of bed ready to go. I am not. I wake up a bit later, check social media with cat cuddles then move onto coffee. I hope to be a full functioning human who's tackling the world by 11am.
4. Tell us about your proudest moment or accomplishment.
Other than being a Mom, it's opening Beautiful South. We opened that space without an investor and with no first hand experience. It was (and continues to be) the hardest thing we've ever done.
5. Do you have a hidden talent?
I wish!
6. Who or what gives you creative inspiration?
A challenge. I love digging in and seeing how we can create an opportunity.
7. Coffee fuels our morning events. If you’re a coffee drinker, what’s your go-to order?
Cold Brew. Hot Beverages make me gag, so it has to be cold. Maybe warm. Not hot.
8. What is your favorite place in Charleston?
My back porch. She's seen weekly Sunday hangs, girls nights, family dinners and lounging in the sun with piles of neglected magazines.
9. How do you unwind or de-stress?
Read about fashion, dig for archival pieces and sell clothes. I'm not in the industry anymore, but I pretend the restaurant floor is a runway.
Be sure to join Creative Mornings Charleston on Friday, April 19, 2024 from 8 to 9:30 AM at Beautiful South in downtown Charleston to hear more from Tina Heath-Schuttenberg as she speaks on this month's theme: SPICY.

Da Capo al Signo
by midgetnazgul, temporalSilence
In music, da capo al signo tells the performer to start over until they see the sign to move on. Life has its movements, too. Even when we must begin again, signs will appear to remind us that just because we feel we are repeating ourselves, we will not necessarily end in the same terrible place we were before.
It's 2018 and Jesse and Hanzo are both living in Tucson, AZ on second chances. Hanzo is on the cusp of recognition as a musician after his life in Japan is run aground by a devastating accident, and Jesse has chiseled out a life of purpose and achievement after a rough childhood. Together, they will come to understand how misfortune and loneliness can end, giving gifts they would never have found any other way.

Y’all. I love cons. They’re just full of people who are here to have a grand time.
Attended Ichibancon for the first time today, just for a day (unfortunately). Talking under the cut.
The day didn’t seem to start well. We lost two people in our group before we started. One to what I think is the flu and the other to a splitting headache. I had no idea where the inserts for my shoes went. It was A Time.
But we got there, registered, and were able to wander artist’s alley for a bit before the panel I wanted to attend. The panel was Recovery of Vintage Cartoons and my favourite that they showed was a full color cartoon that Ub Iwerks worked on (produced?) from, uh, the late 30s? early 40s? It was one of the few copies left, just this decaying film in some archive somewhere, but those colors were glorious. The animation was so smooth. But man, the depth of those colors.
Dante Basco ordered pizza at his Q&A panel ‘cause he was starved and jet lagged. Absolutely engaging man. When we walked in he was mid-realization that it was a two hour panel. Called it a date. A good time. I’m sure it’s in video form on the internet somewhere, several people were recording. Unfortunately I was too late to get in for an autograph, so looks like I gotta go next year, yeah?
Told myself I don’t need more books. Or to spend more money. Buy three anyway.
Keep forgetting I’m actually decent at talking to people, with words out of my mouth, in person. Best skill I’ve gotten from working in retail, I think.
I know I’ve said this before, but going to a con in costume is the best thing ever. It’s so easy to connect with people like that (I mean, also giving them chocolate in plastic eggs works too). Had a guy sit down next to me to hang for a bit when he passed by the second time. First time he complimented my costume. But yeah, we just sat and chatted for a bit, people watching. Which is also one of the best things to do at a con, just let the fantastic costumes pass by you, throw out compliments or ask for photos. Just a good time.
Found a handful of folks I had met at Animazement last year. Excellent seeing them again! They’re so kind. One was a girl who had made her own 20s-style flapper witch costume for AZ - it was pink and so well done! Passed by her and her mom, who recognized me before I got them. I was Newt, again, so that helped finding people. She had a top hat this year and I’m a bit disappointed I couldn’t see the full costume, as I was heading the opposite way. Was able to at least tell her I hoped to see her at AZ this year, too.
Gotta badger my other two newfound con-friends for the selfies they took of us on their phones. And what kind things they had to say about my Newt! One, who plays Newt as well, asked for a hug and I was like, hell yeah! When we pull away he said, “You give such good hugs!” which was exactly what I was thinking too so I’m glad we’re on the same wavelength there.
One cherry on top: we went through a Starbucks drive-thru for hot chocolates because the walk back to the car was cold and we deserve warm things. The lady taking my card at the window made it almost all the way through her “Have a good rest of your night,” as I started to pull away, before laughing right at the end of “night”, turning to her coworkers, and saying, “Did you just see Newt Scamander?”
Which I think is a testament to how well I’m doing, considering I wasn’t wearing the signature overcoat.

The Wit of the Bee
read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/33pAXN9
by Melibe
Eleven-year-old Adam has a great family: genderfluid mom Crowley, flamingly gay dad AZ, and cousin Bee, his birth parent. And he has two great ambitions: getting his debate team to nationals, and convincing his parents to buy him a puppy. But Adam’s idyllic life gets knocked sideways when he finds out his biological father is rich, powerful, and wants him back.
Baize (Bee to a chosen few) is content to live alone with their beehives, tolerating periodic visits from Adam and his parents. They don’t want to think about last year’s drunk kiss with AZ’s brother Gabriel, and they really don’t want to think about their old flame Luke Starr. But when Luke sends a letter staking his claim on Adam, Baize knows they’re in for a fight. And Gabriel, damn him, knows the best lawyers.

When she was in the Senate, Carol Moseley Braun got used to having her clothing scrutinized.
She remembers one incident in particular, she told Vox. “Women’s Wear Daily had me on its cover — actually a picture of my butt,” she said, “and it said, ‘this is what a Chanel sweater set should not look like.’”

Women in politics “are held to a different standard across the board” than men when it comes to dress, said Moseley Braun, who represented Illinois in the Senate from 1993 to 1999. And it hasn’t necessarily changed much since she was a senator.
In November, writer Eddie Scarry of the conservative Washington Examiner made headlines (and spawned countless memes) when he tweeted a photograph of Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the New York City Democrat, with the caption, “that jacket and coat don’t look like a girl who struggles.”
Eddie Scarry’s tweet, now deleted. Twitter
As Gaby del Valle of Vox’s The Goods pointed out, Scarry was trying to cast doubt on Ocasio-Cortez’s working-class bona fides. (He later claimed he was merely “suggesting the incoming congresswoman looked well put together.”) But it’s hard to imagine the same tweet aimed at a man.
Scarry’s comments were just the latest in a long history. Ever since women started running for office in the United States, their clothing choices have been judged and dissected, receiving much more criticism than male politicians’ attire ever gets.
Sometimes, they’ve been subjected to rules their male colleagues didn’t have to worry about; when Moseley Braun was elected, for instance, women weren’t supposed to wear pants on the Senate floor. At other times, the media and the public have focused on women politicians’ clothing at the expense of their ideas.
It’s possible to talk about the clothing of women in politics without reverting to misogyny — after all, clothes can be an important means of self-expression for people of all genders. What’s more, women politicians sometimes send messages with their clothes, as when Democratic women wore black to the State of the Union address earlier this year.

The problem comes in when the media or the public focuses on clothes in ways that belittle or demean the women wearing them, or when women are held to standards of dress or appearance that don’t apply to men. Both excessive media coverage of women politicians’ clothing and restrictive rules governing it are signs of a bigger problem: American politics remains dominated by men, and women are still treated like outsiders.
The first women member of Congress, Jeannette Rankin (R-MT), took office in 1917. Right away, her clothes became a topic of conversation. A Washington Post headline proclaimed, “Congresswoman Rankin Real Girl; Likes Nice Gowns and Tidy Hair.” According to the Post, Rankin was “thoroughly feminine—from her charmingly coiffed swirl of chestnut hair to the small, high and distinctively French heels. She is given to soft and clinging gowns, and, according to her own confession, is very fond of moving pictures.”
As a blog post at the House’s History, Art & Archives website notes, the article was typical of coverage of early congresswomen, whose looks and dress often received outsized attention. Rep. Katherine Langley, who represented Kentucky in the late 1920s and early 1930s, for instance, was criticized for dressing too colorfully. “She offends the squeamish by her unstinted display of gypsy colors on the floor and the conspicuousness with which she dresses her bushy blue-black hair,” one reporter wrote.

Some of the focus on Rankin’s clothing “possibly stemmed from the fact that reporters and editors, lacking the ability to discuss her on the merits of a prior legislative record, wrote of the Montanan largely in the only terms they knew how—treating her as a society page subject,” the post states. “Some descriptions may have had less innocent motives, however, as not-so-subtle attempts to delegitimize the first woman elected to Congress before she ever stepped foot in the House.”
Early women senators sometimes faced similar scrutiny of their attire. Hattie Caraway (D-AR), who in 1932 became the first woman to be elected to the Senate, commented in interviews and in her diary that “the public seemed to be rather obsessed with what she wore,” said Betty Koed, the historian of the Senate. She typically wore simple, comfortable clothing, and “it was a frustration for her that they tended to focus a lot on her dress,” Koed said.

Sen. Margaret Chase Smith (R-ME), circa 1957. Bettmann Archive via Getty Images
In 1957, when then-Sen. Margaret Chase Smith (R-ME) became one of the first women to fly faster than the speed of sound, one of the first things a Los Angeles Times reporter mentioned was her outfit, Koed pointed out — “a bright orange flight suit and high-heeled pumps,” according to the paper. The reporter also wrote that Smith “waved like a little girl on a bus ride” as the jet taxied down the runway, using the same infantilizing language Ocasio-Cortez would face decades later.
The disproportionate fixation on women politicians’ clothing continues today — and it’s not just Ocasio-Cortez. Political cartoons often portray women in revealing or otherwise inappropriate clothing, Koed noted. A 2011 cartoon poking fun at Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for taking an expensive vacation depicted her in a T-shirt and bikini bottom. Another cartoon, from 2009, showed Pelosi with a lacy undergarment bunched below her dress and labeled “liar.” “Your slip is showing,” a man whispered in her ear.
In 2008, vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin faced criticism after Politico reported that the Republican National Committee had spent more than $150,000 on clothes and accessories for her and her family. As Patrick Healy and Michael Luo noted at the New York Times, the expense was seen as conflicting with her image as “an average ‘hockey mom,’” even though advisers said it wasn’t her decision to buy the clothes.
A 2010 Vanity Fair story about the controversy noted that aides initially cut price tags off the clothes to hide the cost from Palin — still, the article was titled, “Sarah Palin’s Shopping Spree.”

Hillary Clinton, meanwhile, has been routinely criticized for wearing pantsuits. Even Project Runway’s Tim Gunn joined in, saying in 2011, “Why must she dress that way? I think she’s confused about her gender.”
Women politicians of color, meanwhile, may face disproportionate criticism because of both race and gender. Moseley Braun, the first black woman elected to the Senate, recalled sparking controversy when by wearing her hair in braids. As with the pantsuit, she found the criticism somewhat ridiculous: “I spent a lot of time getting my hair done, and I thought I looked really nice,” she said.
Sens. Carol Moseley Braun (D-IL), Nancy Kassebaum (R-KS), and Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), together on “Take your Daughter to Work Day,” on April 27, 1995. Maureen Keating/CQ Roll Call via Getty Images
Later, she found that she had blazed a trail for others. Two women were fired from a McDonald’s for wearing braids, she said, “and their defense became, the United States senator is wearing her hair like this, so why can’t we?”
“I’m not sorry about any of it,” she said.
In addition to media scrutiny, women in politics have also had to contend with rules that affect them and not their male colleagues. Until the 1990s, an “unwritten rule” dictated that women could not wear pants on the Senate floor, Koed said. That changed in 1993, after Moseley Braun, unaware of the rule, wore “a very nice Armani pantsuit” to work, the former senator said.
“It was kind of shocking to me at the time that there would be this unwritten rule that women had to wear dresses,” Moseley Braun said. “What century is this?”
The same year, Sens. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) and Nancy Kassebaum (R-KS) decided to challenge the rule by wearing pants and instructing women staffers to do the same, according to Nia-Malika Henderson at the Washington Post. After that, women wearing pants in the Senate became commonplace.

But that didn’t mean women’s wardrobe struggles were over. In 2017, women reporters were kicked out of the speaker’s lobby outside the House chamber, according to CBS, because of a purported ban on sleeveless dresses there and on the House floor.
Like the Senate pants rule, this one was unwritten — and, as CBS noted, it was somewhat inconsistently enforced.
Soon after the reporters’ ouster made news, Rep. Martha McSally (R-AZ) challenged the sleeve requirement directly, appearing in a sleeveless dress and telling her House colleagues, “I’m standing here in my professional attire, which happens to be a sleeveless dress and open-toed shoes.”
Rep.-elect Ilhan Omar (D-MN, bottom row, center) is one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress. Mandel Ngan/AFP/Getty Images
Meanwhile, Rep.-elect Ilhan Omar, one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress, has co-authored a proposal with Pelosi and Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) to create an exception to the House’s 181-year-old ban on hats. Their proposal would allow religious headwear, meaning Omar could wear a headscarf to work.
“No one puts a scarf on my head but me,” she tweeted in November. “It’s my choice — one protected by the first amendment.”
Talking about women politicians’ clothing doesn’t have to be sexist. After all, clothing is an important part of self-presentation, and choosing clothes is something some (though by no means all) people enjoy. People in public life, politicians included, typically put a lot of thought into what they wear, and their decisions often have a deeper meaning.
Sometimes women “use their appearance for very political ends,” said Kelly Dittmar, an assistant professor of political science at Rutgers University and co-author of the book A Seat at the Table: Congresswomen’s Perspectives on Why Their Representation Matters. For example, when Hillary Clinton wore white, a reference to the women’s suffrage movement, to President Donald Trump’s inauguration, “that was purposeful,” Dittmar said. “She wanted people to cover that.”

Talking about clothes and appearance isn’t necessarily frivolous. Take, for example, Soraya Nadia McDonald’s analysis of the semiotics of Michelle Obama’s book cover photo. The image, including Obama’s hairstyle and clothing choice, “places Obama within the tradition of American first ladies while also projecting her individuality,” McDonald writes. In 2006, Washington Post writer Robin Givhan won a Pulitzer for her fashion criticism, including a close reading of a pair of boots worn by then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
Meanwhile, male politicians’ clothes and grooming have occasionally become the subject of conversation. Bill Clinton and John Edwards were both criticized for receiving expensive haircuts. Paul Ryan has been routinely ribbed for his baggy suits — in 2012, Cathy Horyn of the New York Times compared him to “Tom Hanks in ‘Big’ when he becomes a kid again.”
President Barack Obama’s allegiance to blue and gray suits became famous; when he deviated from his usual wardrobe, wearing a tan suit, he was the target of outrage, with Rep. Peter King (R-NY) arguing that his color choice showed he didn’t care about foreign policy.

Men have also fallen afoul of congressional dress norms. Earlier this year, Koed recalls, Sen. Richard Burr arrived for a vote in summer clothes and had to cast his vote from the Senate cloakroom.
But these instances are the exception, not the rule. The problem with the way we talk about clothing in politics is a problem of inequality; women politicians have generally faced more scrutiny over their appearance than men have, Dittmar said. And that disparity reveals a fundamental problem with the way we see women in government today.
Throughout history, clothing has been front and center in coverage of women politicians in a way it hasn’t for men — sometimes, as in the case of Caraway, threatening to obscure their ideas. In part, women’s clothing gets more attention because women’s options are more varied than men’s — “it’s not just another suit,” as Dittmar puts it. But partly it’s because women still struggle “to be taken seriously as elected officials,” she said.
Things haven’t changed that much since the days of Jeannette Rankin. “There’s a continuing lack of comfort,” as Koed put it, with “women in positions of power.” So the media and the public fall back on what they are comfortable with: critiquing women’s appearance.
Both media coverage of women’s appearance and congressional rules around women’s dress are a symptom of something bigger, Dittmar noted: the fact that women still aren’t completely welcome in the halls of government.
Most of the rules for dress in Congress primarily affect women, Dittmar explained. That shows that “this is not an institution in which the rules were written with women in mind,” she said.
Reps.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, (D-NY), Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, (D-FL), Abby Finkenauer, (D-IA), Sharice Davids, (D-KS), Haley Stevens, (D-MI), and other members of the incoming freshman class, pose for a photo on November 14, 2018. Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call
When women politicians are criticized for their clothes, then, it’s about more than the cut or cost of a garment. It’s often a reminder that, in a fundamental way, they don’t belong. Equality wouldn’t mean total silence on the subject of women’s clothing. It would mean both men’s and women’s clothing would be discussed as just one part of their self-presentation as leaders.
In a time when a congresswoman’s nondescript black jacket and coat can inspire mockery, that kind of equality can seem out of reach. But more so than in the past, women are pushing back against coverage of their clothing that they see as sexist, Dittmar said — just as they’ve been more willing to respond aggressively to other types of sexism.
After Scarry’s tweet, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted that the reason journalists “can’t help but obsess about my clothes” was because “women like me aren’t supposed to run for office — or win.”
The reason journos from @FoxNews to @dcexaminer can’t help but obsess about my clothes, rent, or mischaracterize respectful convos as “fights” is bc as I’ve said, women like me aren’t supposed to run for office – or win.
& that’s exactly why the BX and Queens sent me here. https://t.co/t7VBLuyZK3

Around the same time, Ocasio-Cortez also tweeted that she was being repeatedly mistaken for a spouse or intern rather than a rising member of Congress. Her message, Dittmar said, is that “these are the challenges that women face every day in male-dominated spaces and I’m calling them out as I see them.”
For her part, Moseley Braun says she’s not surprised Ocasio-Cortez faced criticism over her clothing. When it comes to gender equality, we like to think “we have made so much progress,” she said, when “the fact of the matter is that on some level, we have really progressed only incrementally.”
But she’s optimistic for the future. “I think the young women are going to make the difference,” she said, “because they’re not having it.”
